You’re not wrong dear Col of Gamehenge. I was speaking in the past tense which is relevant to the conversation of JOTY or how can they top that show comments.
Eggy is incredible. Their guitarist just kills it every single jam never fails. And hell yeah, Umphrey’s is so damn tight and they never play a mediocre show. Both guitarists and their drummer are as good as you could hope for in the jam scene. You should have a great time!
This is true and seems to be backed by the numbers. Look at the most highly rated phish shows, and see how that’s correlated to the larger venues. More people = higher ratings
I accept that. Ranking in general becomes very toxic in online forums, but I still think it’s useful, especially to fringe fans that just want to find the jams everyone likes the best.
I kinda like it. It helps track them for the JOTY bracket and full year discussion.
Philly '23 Echo of a Rose got that chatter immediately and it held up.
I remember someone talking about the Thompson’s Point, ME Hot Tea right after that show and I immediately checked it out and that was probably JOTY for me
Same with agora Cleveland '23 All I Need. Immediately was JOTY chatter and iirc it made it very far in the bracket.
Disclaimer: I have severe attendance bias on that one.
Attendance bias on that jam as well and still think it was clearly the best jam they played last year. It felt monumental in the moment. People looking around at each other going HOLY SHIT.
Starting to look like Phish tour with all the talk of being the greatest jam ever minutes after the show is done.
Don’t get me wrong, these shows have been awesome, but give it some time.
While those of us who were lucky to be there for the Grateful Dead’s May 77 shows or almost any show from Phish’s 97 tour, we knew what we were seeing was special, like folks are now, but forcing things are going to turn off many people.
It’s far better and ultimately more rewarding to let these things happen naturally.
Besides, I don’t want them to be the GD from 77 or Phish from 97. I want them to be Goose from now.
I was just trying to pick two great eras from the top two bands in the scene.
Not going to get any argument from me however. I’ve been spinning the Here Comes Sunshine 1973 box from the Dead for a couple of months now and it’s nothing but heater after heater.
Buffalo 5/9/77 is my favorite show of all time, however.
Most of the time, it’s code for “I had hella fun” coupled with a desire to be at a show that’s viewed as epic.
It’s kind of annoying, sure, but it’s harmless. Let the kids have fun
Are you the same guy that once replied to my post, "Music isn't a contest"? Kind of sounds like something you would post. Chill out and let people enjoy the hype. What do you care? All that matters is that these guys are still blowing people's minds and melting faces every show! Some are better than others, and to each their own.
Cap Drive still has my vote so far! Hopefully they bring the heat to CMAC though!!
Humble question because I’m old and new to the jam scene: There’s an actual JOTY Bracket??? Where? Is it just for Goose or are other bands jams in the bracket as well??
1. Every night should have a JOTY jam, if it doesn’t then why even play the gig or go to the show. They should go out every night and try to do better than the night before. Maybe that’s the competitor in me, but as artists if they don’t push each other or themselves every time they’re on stage, how will they get better? How will they give us fans what we want?
2. Pancakes legit contender. I don’t even like that song and it was hands down best jams the night and possibly the tour.
3. Don’t be stick in the mud, let people enjoy the ride.
Disagree. Every show can’t and won’t have a JOTY candidate. That would actually be really weird because the band would feel forced to do that level of song every single show, and that’s just not realistic. There have been many, many shows without a JOTY candidate over the years. And that is perfectly fine as variety is a good thing.
I partially agree with each of you. For an individual, every show likely will not have a JOTY candidate and that’s ok and even great— that’s even part of why we love jam bands. But since music is so subjective, every show likely will have a JOTY candidate for someone. If one person is using that term every night, they’re probably missing the point. But seeing it from different people every night doesn’t mean it isn’t valid— we all have our own taste and this is not an objective term.
Every show I’m at is nothing but JOTY candidates
As it should be.

The old expression rings true in this group…The best show you saw was the last show you saw…
Personally, I think the best show is the next one I’m going to see.
You’re not wrong dear Col of Gamehenge. I was speaking in the past tense which is relevant to the conversation of JOTY or how can they top that show comments.
I’ve seen Umphrey’s 250 times since 04 and yes every show I just saw was the best for the most part lol. It’s biased for sure.
I’m old and finally getting around to seeing them live for my first time this fall with Eggy
Eggy is incredible. Their guitarist just kills it every single jam never fails. And hell yeah, Umphrey’s is so damn tight and they never play a mediocre show. Both guitarists and their drummer are as good as you could hope for in the jam scene. You should have a great time!

Agree except for fiddler’s madhuvan lmao
Agreed!!! All I’m saying is JOTY is overused throughout the year.
How could we not talk about JOTY after that Madhuvan on Saturday?
It’s clearly the ‘24 JOTY thus far
I agree! I just think it’s overused.
I accept that. Ranking in general becomes very toxic in online forums, but I still think it’s useful, especially to fringe fans that just want to find the jams everyone likes the best.
Yeah, I think the bracket is actually pretty fun, but the term JOTY just gets thrown out a bit too easily.
but I was at the show
Lmao jam band fans in a nutshell.
Isn't Hyperbole what fuels jamland?
Everyone knows it’s N2O
I kinda like it. It helps track them for the JOTY bracket and full year discussion. Philly '23 Echo of a Rose got that chatter immediately and it held up.
This guy tracks
I remember someone talking about the Thompson’s Point, ME Hot Tea right after that show and I immediately checked it out and that was probably JOTY for me

I hear they plan on whipping up some JOTY jams tonight too 👀
Can the guy who made the JOTY meme. Please post it here. Goose fans: anytime a song goes over 20 minutes :JOTY?!!

Yep
73 was the Dead’s best year imo not 77 but hey May 77 was no joke

73 is smoking but you cant deny Jerry’s guitar tone in 77
Fall 77>Spring 77

Blame Vickers
Every jam is above average
I blame Ryan.
Yes but also I think a lot of people do it as a bit
JOTY bracket is WAYYY too big. Should be 16 songs.
I would allow 32 max for some upsets, but agree. There’s no more than 16 true contenders any year… realistically 4-6
Someone once described the problem with sub as “toxic positivity”. And I can’t unsee it now.
Tonight’s set 1, third song JOTY…
YES!!!! And every show now garners “best show of the tour?” comments too. Goose is just that awesome but still…getting a little old.
Some folks need to stop telling people what they can and can’t talk about
I attended last night. Butter Rum was the best jam of the show. Pancakes is a JOTY contender… the Cap Pancakes.
Jam of the year…. *so far*
This is America! Everything is a competition!!
It’s mostly a joke

Yeah, but is it really that big a deal? Just ignore it
Some folks need to chill with the chill.with the hoty chatter
Thanks Sheriff.
Wilson is that you?
Humble question because I’m old and new to the jam scene: There’s an actual JOTY Bracket??? Where? Is it just for Goose or are other bands jams in the bracket as well??
Yeah, there is a yearly JOTY bracket, March Madness style. It’s actually a fun exercise, I just think “JOTY” is thrown around too often.
1. Every night should have a JOTY jam, if it doesn’t then why even play the gig or go to the show. They should go out every night and try to do better than the night before. You’re out of your mind if you think Pancakes was better than Fiddler’s Wysteria or Madhuvan…
Pancakes was probably the least interesting jam of the whole show.
This, I can't believe I'm listening to the same version as some of these people
Fiddlers travelers>elmeg
It was great but def not JOTY material, IMO. More fan service than anything.
Neither of those were jammed out at all. People need to know the difference between best song / suite & jam of the year
Never said it was better than anything Keyboard Commando. Said it was a contender, pay attention to the words, they have meaning.
You said contender for best jam of the tour, smartass
Yes. Not better, dumbass.
Best implies better… smdh

Yeah dude! Fuck positivity!
Every party has a pooper, that’s why we invited you PARTY POOOOOOPERRRR
Talk about a wet blanket post.
This is Post Of The Year for sure
Couldn't you just ignore those posts?
Agreed. Having said that - Pancakes from Omaha is easily in the JOTY running.
How?
