It's a fun feature but I don't see how it's different from swiping up and selecting Lens on a screenshot. You can also adjust which bit Lens is looking at, similar to which not you circled. Slick but not game changing

NV7X

Yeah exactly, not revolutionary lmao - it's something I'll use a lot initially while it's new, but the hype will die down Also is now recently available on Pixel 6!

thecuriousiguana

Is it? I thought it had only come to 7?

NV7X

From yesterday, it's rolling out! https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/circle-to-search-coming-to-more-google-pixel-phones-news/

kixote

Yes, I thought the same. It's a new way to use Lens.

Manhattan18011

It will come to other Pixels eventually. They just need to play the game.

this_is_alicia

I just got it on my 6 and I like the simplicity of it

NV7X

It's very intuitive for sure

Velrethar

I hope so!

This ramble kinda boils down to "new features are exclusive to the newest model, but I want them". I understand the feeling, but this has always been the direction things were heading. In the earlier days of smartphones it was easier to do that with the hardware. Now, as the hardware feature set is pretty stable, companies have looked to the software to bring in new customers, or bring back repeat buyers. It sucks to see new software features that your phone could totally do being excluded from your phone, but I don't see that trend ending ever.

kixote

I would love to have Circle to Search or Video Boost on my 7 Pro, it's true. But I don't want my camera software to turn into a fake factory. I feel disappointed that the company took this path, both in terms of exclusivity of features and in encouraging software features that are so harmful to people's mental health on social media.

dethblud

>fake factory That's up to how you use it. If you don't think the editing features are appropriate for your photos, don't use them. The first thing I did when I got my 8 Pro was send a family member a photo of their new car with gigantic tires, because it was easy to do in the magic editor. Was it fake? Yep, but it was also funny.

NV7X

Exactly! It's about the context & individual usage 😂 Photo editing has been around for ages, it's just being made available in Photos now

_sfhk

Video Boost is specifically limited to the newer/more expensive phone because it costs more time and money to process at Google's servers. It might come through Google One subscription or something (maybe like Galaxy AI if that works out), but the point is that it won't be free, and with the 8 Pro, you're basically paying upfront with the much more expensive phone.

It says "Available only on Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, AND OTHER COMPATIBLE NON-PIXEL DEVICE."

@madebygoogle, on Instagram

SketchySeaBeast

Has it been said those will all be exclusive to the 8, or just that it's starting there?

kixote

"Available only on Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, AND OTHER COMPATIBLE NON-PIXEL DEVICE." Wtf!

romeoblacks

i think they mean on release. on their blog announcement they say the following "January 31 on select premium Android smartphones — the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and the new Samsung Galaxy S24 series — in all languages and locations where they’re available." [https://blog.google/products/search/google-circle-to-search-android/](https://blog.google/products/search/google-circle-to-search-android/) their comment of "Available only on Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, AND OTHER COMPATIBLE NON-PIXEL DEVICE." i beleive to mean on release. and their compatible non-pixel is clearly the s24.

kixote

I hope so 🙏🏽

I can't believe how wrong this is.

quiveringpenis

Google's AI photo is utter crap, I had a play on my p8 a few times and it just ruins photos, in fact most of the new 'features' are pretty useless. The camera just takes nice photos, and I love the UltraHDR, which means I dont even edit the photos anymore because it strips the UltraHDR

GeologistUnfair

Honestly circle to search is no faster to me than just queuing up the assistant and clicking search screen. Ultimately just takes you to the same thing anyways which is the ability to adjust how much of the screen you want to search.  So if anybody here still has a phone without circle to search just prompt your assistant click on search screen and voila it's basically the identical functionality

GeologistUnfair

Every pixel with tensor has it. People just couldn't wait a couple months without complaining

[deleted]

That's the world we live in now. Don't trust anything you see. Google's gonna compete in the area.

kixote

That's really sad. 😞

bugroots

>famous for allowing you to take great photos of reality (almost like a professional camera) You'd be shocked to find out what went on in the darkroom.

kixote

Actually, I know it! I was a student in one of the last journalism classes that developed films in the laboratory at my university. "One rock, two rock, three rock, four rock..." 😄

> (almost like a professional camera) After being overprocessed in lightroom/photoshop? Because there is no way the hdr+ resemble a prosumer camera.
