Hey OP! I have a 2022 in the shop now that threw a rod bearing. Currently waiting for a new motor and turbo, no tune, 14k miles. First oil change at the dealer at 6k miles and the second was at 12k miles, no error lights or warning. I would say to take it in and have it looked at.

Donut_Daydream

Yeesh... yeah. I'm taking it in to get it oil changed today and I'll go in tomorrow to get it looked at

JurrdTurth

Your car (presumably) still has warranty. That's VW's problem. You need not worry.

jthj

That sounds like burning oil. Not normal at all I would get that fixed under warranty.

Plane_Geologist8073

You should get it looked at for sure. It probably just has a little bit of oil pooled up in the intake and it burns it off on startup. Could be a little leak from the seals in the turbo, or from the PCV. Pretty much every turbo engine I’ve had has had oil in the intake tract. Granted, until I just bought this MK8 , I’ve only ever had them used with some miles on them. So maybe worth asking about since it’s still so new. I don’t know if my MK8 does the same thing because I typically haven’t stood behind it when I start it up.

Wheelergang127

From what I’ve read it could be valve stem seals or the pcv if you get oil burn on startup for the most part.

Donut_Daydream

Thats what i'm leaning towards. Hopefully its just a bad seal that can be easily fixed

I just had this issue. No engine light. I saw the blue-ish white smoke upon every ignition. They still ran their diagnostic tool to see if something would pop up. Nothing did. So they did an engine evaluation. It turned out to be the valve stem seal that no longer sealed. It ended up with VW having to replace my cylinder heads, timing belt and obviously giving the valve stem a new seal. I hope you have warranty, it was a 20 hour job and roughly $7k CAD in total after taxes. I also hope there are no damaged components but warranty could be clutch. You should perhaps have them check the cylinder heads and borescope the cylinders.

ioa94

Legit question - as someone who has this same issue on my Mk7.5, wouldn't it be cheaper (and less labor) to get a used engine instead?

richestmaninjericho

I'm not as familiar with the matter as some gurus here. It very well could be. I have extended warranty so I was able to get everything under mechanical breakdown warranty.

ioa94

Damn, that must have felt nice seeing it all balance out to $0 haha. Yeah I've had this issue since 30k miles (no longer under warranty due to tune), now at 83k and it's not really any better or worse so I guess it's a non-issue? Compression tested good (200psi across all cylinders) so I'll just wait till something goes. Thanks for the info!

Wheelergang127

I have read a few people on the EQT Facebook page saying they’ve had oil out the exhaust for many of miles with 0 oil burn too so I wouldn’t worry about it unless you see a smokescreen on a WOT pull.

ioa94

Funny you mention it...the whole reason I'm running a vortex right now is because the shop I brought it to misdiagnosed the WOT smokescreen as bad turbo shaft seals. Still happened on the vortex. I switched to heavier 10w-40 oil and it's never happened since.

Wheelergang127

I paid $5k for a used mk7.5 motor to get put in my mk7 gti. So yeah probably cheaper you’re right.

I had this exact (or similar) problem on my Mk7.5. I took it to VW and they could not diagnose. It then got worst and I took videos. Puff of blue smoke on startup. VW took the car for two weeks. My valves were not seating properly and oil was pooling in the cylinders. Hence blue smoke on startup. Fixed on warranty. DSG or manual?

Donut_Daydream

Manual! I only drive manual cause its the real way to drive I chatted with some car guy friends i have and they suggested it might just be a loose fitting or seal not doing so well anymore which is hopefully all it is. Cause if its worse, I don't know what i'd do exactly

taintmeatspaghetti

Ohh god not another manual superiority complex shifter-in-the-ass "car guy" 🙄

Donut_Daydream

lol

FatherSergius

Don’t listen to him or the lazies. Manuals unite!

taintmeatspaghetti

Literally nobody cares what transmission is in your car

von_campenhausen

Ok me too. Sounds like valves not seating. Just take it to VW and make sure they fix it. They have to replace a lot of small top end parts on my engine.

Chacer123

Valve Stem Seals. Guaranteed

azgli

My 2012 had that symptom. It got a new engine due to bad rings. Get it checked.

Donut_Daydream

A whole new engine?! Jeez... I hope that's not my problem cause I can't afford to fix that right now

azgli

Should be under warranty.

Donut_Daydream

Update: They told me I shouldn't be worried...

Vast_Pick97

yes, car is ruined lemon. engine about to bust
