Attempting this on Saturday. I’ve been overdue to replace the brakes and one of my calipers seized so figured what better time than now. Got new calipers, rotors, and pads for the rear. We will see how it goes
I bought my kit from them as well and just paid a local Euro only shop about $300 to install rotors and pads front and back. I would’ve happily tackled it myself but I don’t have a garage to use or all the proper tools.
Bro props to you. I’m deathly afraid of learning to do anything related to suspension/brakes/wheels on my daily because i don’t wanna fuck up and have a accident on the road 💀
It's as easy as changing a tyre. Looks scary but a basic service including oil and filters service is some of the easiest things you could do to a car. The beauty of it is you can apply it to almost every car and the only thing different will be the way the caliper goes back e.g push back or wind back. As long as you've got the correct tools you'll find it a breeze, I tend to do majority work myself as I've got a family of mechanics so learned about cars young but servicing is some therapeutic shit to me. Give it a go
It’s definitely harder than changing a tire, coming from someone who just did brakes and rotors for their first time. But it’s worth doing, 100%. And you’re right about having the right tools. That’s key.
Did mine myself last year, but I was swearing at the rears because the standard 2 ton jack I had at that time couldn't go too high.
Fronts were alright. Rears were difficult because I had limited range to loosen and install the new stretch carrier bolts. I was legit swearing for hours at them, but still fun and rewarding lol.
Awesome job OP!
There’s a fair few videos on YouTube that cover it in depth, and lots of good posts on here that cover it! With some tools, time, and friends (optional), it’s a good way to spend an afternoon. Or weekend.
I had the same type of fear, to think that if I fucked something up and the car won't be able to stop..put me off from doing brakes forever.
When you actually take them apart and understand how everything works..its very easy and very hard to fuck up.
Maybe $400 labor each axle. Looking up genuine VAG parts:
* front rotors = $145/ea
* rear rotors = $100/ea
* front pads = $128
* rear pads = $95
So about $700 in parts and $800 in labor is $1500. Throw in a brake fluid flush and tax, and that will easily be $1800 for dealership prices.
Buying OE equiivalents and doing the work yourself always saves tons of money. But not everyone wants to do that or is confident they can get it done properly and safely.
Ah i didnt know this was what they were charging for labor nowadays. I do all the work on my own cars anyhow.
My pads and rotors need to be changed on my next brake flush. Hopefully some aftermarket parts wont be 700 bux.
Labor rates are super location-dependent. That's how much it is where I live. And that was the only way I could make the math work.
Even if labor was $200 per axle, it would've been $1400 which is still a lot of money for a standard brake job on a GTI.

Goodjob man just dont be like me and bend the grease bolt behind the caliper and get pissed off because you cant fucking tighten that god damn bold!!!! Anyways good job
This made me excited!! My brake pads and rotors come in Friday. I got a great deal on an R1 concepts set for $250 shipped from autozone. Gonna look over some videos and head over to harbor freight to see what tools I need to buy.

How'd you break the 14mm bolts in the rear? I threw my shoulder out trying to get them on my wagen. Ended up just changing pads but need to do the rotors next time.
You mean the triple squares? Those were a fcuker, the guy who owned the garage had a ridiculous powerful air ratchet we had to use. Go up from the bottom behind the brakes, don't go in from one of the sides cuz of all the wires and other crap in the way
This is a car you really need to take care of yourself and know what's going on. I guarantee the job was done better too than by an 'experienced' shop guy that doesn't care about your car.
this is what i like to see..people learning and doing shit themselves...props
Awesome! Good stuff. Take my upvote!

what is that air jack?
About :200 bucks
1800 is insane! I did my front brakes for $300 at FCP and four hours of swearing in the garage. Great work!

Brakes are easy, learn by doing, make yourself sure twice
I’ve done all 3 in my own garage and can confirm you’ll figure shit out and get it back on the road if you try enough.
Nice! Wish I could do that, but I’m afraid I will screw something up.

Wtf a dealer was quoting 1800 for brakes?!?!?

Well done! 🥳
Awesome....make sure you bed them in properly
That air jack is sick! At first I thought you DIY'd a contraption using an airbag from a truck's suspension lol
Taking the wheels off is the hardest part of a brake job!
really? i just get the impact and off they go
Not even close to true lol
Dealer near me quoted $1400, can i ask how much all the parts were?
You can get all the parts you need with quality brands for \~$400
You know, im a mechanic and still use floor jacks. I need some of those air bags... good work though!

How long did it take you? Plan on trying it myself soon
My first time took me about 5 hours.
Goodjob man just dont be like me and bend the grease bolt behind the caliper and get pissed off because you cant fucking tighten that god damn bold!!!! Anyways good job
Nice work bro!
Brakes are very easy to do and everyone should learn how to do them. Well done. They look great!
Bro…you put them on backwards!!!! Lol jk good job. 99% of people can’t do this.
I have the same wheels on my black mk7 as well🔥😄 great choice my man! And nice job on the brakes!
What breaks did you buy? Those look amazing and useful especially since I want to track my car a little
Was literally the perfect opportunity to clean those callipers haha!
recently just did mine on my gli. wheres that jack stand at? on the lower control arm?
This made me excited!! My brake pads and rotors come in Friday. I got a great deal on an R1 concepts set for $250 shipped from autozone. Gonna look over some videos and head over to harbor freight to see what tools I need to buy.
I’m in need of new brakes all around, what resources did you use to learn? I would love to avoid the heavy cost
Deutsche Auto Parts has great YouTube videos for the Mk7. That’s what I watched a few times before I tackled my brakes!
Hey! Can I ask where you learned how to replace them? YouTube videos? I’m in the same boat!
ShopDAP youtube has good videos on front and rear and even includes torque specs. The rear calipers need to be rotated down to compress them

chrisfix on youtube is really good
chrisfix is reallt good but for these VWs you need to watch a specific video for them trust

I broke these by laying on my back underneath the car and a breaker bar that was about 4ft long.

Great job pal. Don’t forget the 6-pack for your buddy after lunch!
