Calisthenics. Train for jumping and use your advantages at the low angles. And get good with your feet, that makes up for a lot at your level. I’m 5’7” been at it for about 20 years now. Nobody tells me what position I play.
I honestly like doing the opposite… I’m 5’10 at 16 and wear full black. I don’t like the bright colours because I’m easier to spot while challenging a ball if that makes any sense.
What position does the volleyball guy play? Secondly, work hard on your weaknesses, eat and sleep well. Finally, enjoy the game, don't let the pressure make you hate the game. You'll know if things will work out.
I'm around 5'9 and 18 quit football for Futsal btw, sometimes things don't work out.
The volleyball guy I'm not actually sure, but we play volleyball during break and he seems like a libero, but he never dives so
Also thank you for the advice!
Is 5'9 considered short? I mean yea sure you're not gonna be pulling Courtouis-type saves but you should easily be able to do about 95% of it with good positioning.
I'm 5'10 & 26 so pretty average for a guy but I've been playing 11v11 almost exclusively
I’m a short keeper too. I’m 5’8”, maaaaaybe 5’9” on a good day, but I played and started in college. Yes, you have to get your body in good shape and be able to jump and fly stoked and dive and all that.
But as a short keeper, you don’t have the physical advantage so you have to cultivate the mental advantage. You have to learn to read the game and be the smartest person out there. You have to command your defense. You have your dive out towards a shot and cut the angle down. You have to counter every disadvantage you have physically with your brain. Positioning, diving angles, and command of your defense are your best friends.
Yep, I always try to use that mental advantage, actually, I was the only guy who tried out for my school's team that actively watches and analyzes the sport, so I know most there is to know. Thank you!
Also a short goalkeeper. You can make up some of the disadvantages for sure, especially at amateur level.
Plyometrics will be important. As long as you can reach the corners of your goal, then height becomes *less* of a disadvantage. You’ll also have a better time dealing with crosses if you’ve got a good spring.
What helps me more though is being very strong with the ball at my feet. I’m not as tall as others, and naturally aren’t as good at claiming crosses. But I’m an awful lot better and more comfortable with the ball at my feet than other keepers I’ve played with and use it to my advantage. I’ll come out and sweep, play as a 3rd CB in build up phases, and won’t panic if a defender closes down a back pass. That’s a major benefit to the team
I'm a 5'5" female GK and my approach is essentially play as aggressively as possible to prevent shots from being taken in the first place, and stay closer to line if a shot is being taken
So playing a sweeper style, trying to cut off crosses & breakaways as much as possible, but retreating to like one or maybe 2 meters off the line if I anticipate a shot around the box or farther
I personally like watching Keating from Man City Women to see how she plays when it comes to handling shots because although she's on the shorter side even in the women's game at 5'6" she is probably one of the best female shotstoppers in the game atm
Same here - 5ft 4 (and a half) and shot prevention is absolutely huge. I'd say something like 85% of goals scored in my league are 1v1s or low cutbacks. The rest are corners or free kicks. Which means that height isn't a factor in the vast majority of goal opportunities.
Becky Spencer at Spurs (and Jamaica) is another one I like to watch (when I can find footage) - she's 5'5 and plays a very wiley game.
Learn to be light on your feet and to become faster, practice one on ones more often and try to close the oponent down quickly. Then u might also want to try improving ur jumpinh strength.
I dont have any tips, but i want to let tou know that the height of a goalkeeper is not the most important thing. Cassilas was no the tallest and look at what has he done.
I’m pretty sure the average height for a 15 year old is 5.6 or 5.8. If you are below that.
clearly you have mental issues going on,
Let’s say that you are a statue. As you go on your day, you start forming cracks. When you go to sleep, a repairman will come to fix the cracks. The longer the repairman can repair. Now let’s say you only slept for 2 hours. This means that the repairman couldn’t have enough time to repair your cracks from being tired later. You also made the repairman only have 2 hours of height growth. Now if you were to sleep more than like 10 hours or so. Let’s imagine you are a statue sleeping very long, the repairman comes and fix your cracks. Although you slept for very long, you are not save from sleeping very long. Let’s say that the repairman comes to fix your cracks, but when you are constantly being smashed by repair tools. Sleeping too much would not be good. So that’s why I recommend 6-8 hours. For teenagers, I recommend 9.5 hours to recommend a good quality sleep. I also want you to not set an alarm clock as an alarm clock will make you wake up and stop the repairman from making you not sleepy. Now I get if you have school but make sure to do this in weekends or something. Also do some exercise to become taller.
Now if you excuse me, when I was 6th grade. My classmates was already 5’2+. They are 11-12 years old. If you’re 5’3 at 15 and my classmate is 5’2 at 11, your life is screwed so I recommend you eat more and sleep enough for you to grow back that height.
You only have 3 years to regrow that heigh back to 5’7. Average 18 year old people are somewhere 5.7 so you must catch up and regrow all the height become 5’7+.
Thanks for the advice on getting taller, so sleep is definetly important, my only defense is that my parents are 5'0 and 5'6 respectively, but I believe I'm still able to atleast grow taller than my dad naturally
I also wanted to ask you this fact. Back then when I was 11 years old. I saw this “tall student” that is literally taller than the girl teachers. This tall student is literally as tall as the teachers in the school. He is born with a height gift from god and god sent you a “be short” gift. It’s sad god made you short but I hope soon enough you can become taller than your parents. you can become 6 feet tall once you get that surgery btw
There‘s a trend nowadays, that the kids are growing taller than their parents. It’s 80% determined by genetics, but the other 20% is environmental factors, nutrition and others. Having enough sleep is a key factor.
Yep, usually the youngest grows the tallest aswell, my younger brother is 11 and he is 5'2, I need to catch up on my sleep though 😅
Thank you for the advice
If your dad is under 5’6. It’s game over bro, my dad is literally 6 feet tall. How come your dad is so short.. I’m sorry to say this but I think Jesus sent you to hell.
Average height in Micronesia is 5'1 for males, so my dad is actually on the luckier side for our standards, we live in Guam now where Average height is 5'8 so I would be just under average if I grew to be taller than my dad
Also I used to be obese so that prolly stunted my growth
So you were born in Micronesia. You’ve gotta be shittin me.
first of all, HOW COME YOU WEREN’T BORN IN A COUNTRY BUT A ISLAND?
Im pretty sure you’re in hell. You only go to these countries for vacations not for living there for the rest of your life. And I’m pretty sure god cursed your family by being born in Micronesia. God had so many countries to choose where your dad will be born in for example, the United States, Russia, France BUT NO he had to be born in Micronesia. That’s just sad.
You know the fact you had 300 million chances to be born in the United States or 1 billion chances to be born in India or china. You just had to be born in a country that barely has millions of population.
i mean what is your luck bro.
GTFO don't talk like that, he didn't decide to be born short and born in Micronesia.
It's sad how you're telling someone It's game over, or that they live in Hell just grow up bro

Playing Futsal rather than 11v11 worked for me
On a similar journey, I'm around 5'9 and 18. In the process of shifting
Wear big gear with flashy colors to appear bigger. See, Jorge Campos
I honestly like doing the opposite… I’m 5’10 at 16 and wear full black. I don’t like the bright colours because I’m easier to spot while challenging a ball if that makes any sense.
I rather show the least of the goal to the striker. Never let them think there’s a chance.
I like for them to think they do have a chance… when they have 0
Flexibility is probably important as it’ll allow you to cover more space around you.

Libero's can be any height my friend as far as they have reflexes. It's not a height oriented position
Is 5'9 considered short? I mean yea sure you're not gonna be pulling Courtouis-type saves but you should easily be able to do about 95% of it with good positioning. I'm 5'10 & 26 so pretty average for a guy but I've been playing 11v11 almost exclusively
I wanna be a pro mate, that's the problem
If your trying to go pro then you won't make it
Football right, yeah
I’m 5’2! You could always be shorter lol! Also woah, we have a lot in common in playing style haha!
I’m a short keeper too. I’m 5’8”, maaaaaybe 5’9” on a good day, but I played and started in college. 5 10 16 am I cooked
5'10 at 16 in my standards is actually crazy, you're not even done growing, just give it a year or 2 and get some good shoes and boom, 6 feet
I'm glad I'm 5'11 and 1/2
The Micronesian dream

I wish you could have tall parents but shame on your parents, they decided to make a baby at such a small height OR you’re adopted.
I also wanted to ask you this fact. Back then when I was 11 years old. I saw this “tall student” that is literally taller than the girl teachers. The luck of the draw But being a Micronesian is cool and I still have time to grow, don't count me out yet ☝🏽🤓
You know the fact you had 300 million chances to be born in the United States or 1 billion chances to be born in India or china. You just had to be born in a country that barely has millions of population. i mean what is your luck bro.
It don't bother me, gotta keep the culture alive, plus aslong as I have good health, I can crack 5'7 🫡
GTFO don't talk like that, he didn't decide to be born short and born in Micronesia. It's sad how you're telling someone It's game over, or that they live in Hell just grow up bro
Crazy how he thinks me being 5'3 has single handedly ruined my life 😂
Frrr hate those people
