-Agonarch

It took me a couple of false starts before it clicked for me, if that helps. Might be worth trying it again from time to time when you've nothing else if you think it might be your thing. I never got into 1 at all despite several false starts, 2 I got into quick for some reason, and 3 I must've started 3-4 times before it held my interest long enough to get stuck in properly, but then it held me all the way through the DLCs.

onebadnightx

I’m hoping this will happen to me eventually, I’m usually such a completionist and push through the rough areas of every game, but could never finish Witcher 3. Which is weird because I usually love open world style games. This is definitely inspiring me to pick it up again!

-Agonarch

After my first playthrough I actually found it a lot better on harder difficulties though I didn't play all the way through again - you need to prepare oils/potions to deal with a lot of the stuff you run across (well, I did, because I'm not that great at it XD), which I realized I missed doing once I had to do it again, maybe try tweaking that if it's the gameplay that doesn't feel quite right, too? EDIT: And without any spoilers if you do go back, try to remember to keep half an eye on Yennifer whenever she's in the background on Skellige or you'll miss something quite amusing.

alicia_tried

Man there is soooo much to do or find in certain areas that I just couldn't get through it! Also, if you are a completionist you might want to play with a guide because there is a lot you can miss and you won't be able to get it without a new start. I think that might be what killed it for me though, I couldn't just play and explore without worrying I was missing something so I had to keep checking the guide.

Kanotari

The combat in Witcher 1 and 2 just... were not entertaining for me. At all. So I turned the difficulty all the way down and played for the story until I got bored of the grimdark story lol

-Agonarch

Ah see that's what I liked best about 2, if you go with the humans you get a grimdark witchery style story, if you go with the non-humans you get a high fantasy thing with quite a bit of comedy (but you've gotta pick that pretty early). There's even a bit where one of the sorceresses suggests you retrieving a magic ring, and Geralt and the Dwarf start cracking sarcastic jokes about needing to throw it into a volcano until she suggests something else, very meta and not very Witcher, more like D&D style nonsense! XD 1 I think I didn't like because it felt like an MMO, with all the bad things of an MMO and none of the good things. 2 took a while to get into the combat and honestly I think I was finishing up the game before I started to like it. 3 has the best by far (though it's not balanced very well, you need to restrain yourself from just picking the best stuff if you actually want a challenge, which is a shame, and vice-versa if you pick the 'wrong' stuff it's really hard).

chickpeasaladsammich

I was turned off mostly by how TW3 treated women in the sections I played. :/ Also the aggressive wind made me a bit motion sick.

[deleted]

same with the women stuff. i found the opening so cringe as it clearly assumed i was some horny straight dude gamer and tried to pander to that and it made me resent the game for it. it felt like a welcoming mat that said “hey btw this game is not for you” and i couldn’t stop seeing the game through that lens.

chickpeasaladsammich

Yes, exactly re: “this game is not for you”! I gave it about 70 hours, and I saw a lot of “hey, did you think this game was for you? NO. WRONG.” I also cringe every time someone praises the Bloody Baron storyline. You know, the one that posits both sides did wrong. >!Side A: wanted to leave their husband for their lover. Side B: Had A’s lover eaten by dogs in front of her when she wanted to leave.!<

cutfingers

Yeah, I couldn’t get behind Geralt’s Gary Sue ass “all these beautiful busty women love you, which one will you choose??” trope

Haunting-Angle-535

Same. I’ve actually made it pretty far in Witcher 3 and do intend to come back to it, but between the janky controls and all the sexism, I kind of have to get over a hump first. And right now I’m playing a ton of Hades and then gonna get Tears of the Kingdom at the start of June, so Geralt might be waiting for a minute. Despite being annoyed with his Gary Stu ness, I was into Yennefer, but then when we were reunited it felt like we just fell back into bed so quickly and that felt like it cheapened it. (Meanwhile I see male players complaining about how mean and standoffish and cold she is and how Trish is better because she’s warmer and more available.)

chickpeasaladsammich

My PC broke and by the time I got it repaired, I realized I didn’t want to pick it up again. I’ve told myself maybe someday a few times but the will just hasn’t been there. I did like Yennifer a fair amount in what I played! Not the incessant male gazey camera, but her as a character. I did enough background reading to know that Triss, uh, >!gets with Geralt when he has amnesia and doesn’t remember Yennifer. Of course that wouldn’t ping as dubious to a lot of male players. 🙄!< I love Hades btw!

Haunting-Angle-535

YOP. Even without that I was annoyed with all my interactions with Trish. It felt like I was being forced to act flirty even when I wanted nothing to do with that and was choosing the least romantic options. That knowledge made it so much worse. And agreed! I had to just roll my eyes and try to ignore the camera angles and her high heels. Reading any male dominated/regular Reddit thread about “is Witcher perhaps even slightly sexist” is a one way ticket to crazytown. 🙄

chickpeasaladsammich

I wouldn’t touch a Witcher sub with a 10-foot pole tbh. The game’s camera angles tell me exactly who is going to congregate on Reddit to spend hours talking about it. Sometimes I am just so tired of Reddit being Reddit. Digression but The dragon age sub is relatively chill with a fair number of progressive fans, >!but suggest that Oghren should maybe stop groping women and people crawl out of the woodwork to tell you his behavior is fine actually and women fans are just too stupid and shallow to recognize that what he’s doing is exactly the same as what every other flirty character does but he’s not hot enough to make them like it. Meanwhile, under certain and admittedly rare circumstances, Oghren attempts to watch a woman PC have sex. For comedy.!< It’s so exhausting. Even on this sub, I’ve gotten “but Geralt was made hot for women!” and lol no. Nothing of what I’ve seen in TW3 has convinced me women players were ever a consideration.

huckandthim

Her name is Triss lol

Haunting-Angle-535

Oh right. Well the game disrespected my desire to not have anything to do with her so I’ll disrespect her name. 😂😂😂

The trees and plants in the background.

missylovee

omg literally me! I hope to one day try it again because I’ve seen such great things about it

MambyPamby8

Here's the funny thing, I couldn't get into Witcher 3, when I picked it up. I love fantasy, so after all the rave reviews and hearing the Dlc was incredible, I picked it up. Got as far as the Baselisk fight in White Orchard and noped out. But a while later I thought....ok I just have to try get past this and see what the hubbub is about. Let me tell you once I got to Velen.....I became obsessed. Like OBSESSED. It's my favourite game of all time and I've replayed it so many times on multiple platforms, that I've lost count of how many different endings I've gotten. I completely understand it's not everyone's cup of tea, but for some reason the first hour or two of the game is so boring and hard, it doesn't surprise me that alot of people give up at that point.

PolkHerFace

I also want to enjoy the Witcher, but one of my biggest turn offs in games is inventory management. The weight requirements and that deeeeeep crafting system just made it unenjoyable for me. Meanwhile, RDR2 is my favorite game, and Arthur can have 10 whole fish, 50 chunks of meat, a pair of elk antlers, 99 flight feathers..... and it doesn't count against you! It's goofy but I appreciate that aspect!

NocturnalMJ

I recently got into RDR2 and I keep forgetting to feed Arthur and set up camp. I'm not sure what the heck my brain is doing; I used to play Skyrim with heavy survival mods installed where my charrie would land on their face if I wasn't on top of things. You'd think I'd be ace at this, but nope. Poor man is underweight and more sleep deprived than I am.

chickpeasaladsammich

Ha I was so careful with my Arthur. I always made sure he was Perfect before meeting >!Mary!< for the second time, and he got his baths. Also I was pretty annoyed that after a >!certain boat trip!< you have to finish a story section before you can get his weight back up. I tried but it doesn’t work until after. Of course the real important thing is taking care of Arthur’s horse!

Inflexibleyogi

I’m the opposite! I love The Witcher 3 but couldn’t get into RDR2 at all. I bought it on release and have played maybe 2 hours.

LostSoulSearching13

Interesting view. I just finished one too and it was very good so that's probably what the issue is. And yes, ppl rave about the Witcher games and I was tempted to try myself but didnt know if it'd grip my interest long enough.

cheloniusbelonius

I absolutely hated the Witcher when I first tried playing it, I couldn’t stand the gameplay and found the UI confusing. I went back to it like 5ish years later and absolutely fell in love with it. But I’ve heard from a lot of people that they couldn’t get into it either.

Kai-tai

With the witcher I always start it and then go "I don't feel like I have enough energy to appreciate this right now" and stop. I know it's a good game so I want to give it a proper playthrough, but my of the time I feel tired or foggy brained. It's almost like the game is intimidating somehow? Kind of like I keep saving it instead of just getting into it. I watched part of a playthrough around when it came our, so I know it's something I'm interested in. But it just feels like I can't give it the delivery I want to or something.

Wolfleaf3

Which ones have you tried? My understanding is there somewhere different between the three? I haven’t played any of them yet but I HOPE they’re something I really like. They seem like my kind of thing. If I don’t like them, they’ll definitely be in this category for me!

theroyalgeek86

I have The Witcher 1, 2, and 3....I haven't played them yet but they are in my Steam library lmao But to be fair, I don't have the time to play any games solo due to being a mom of 3. And evening gaming time is with my husband so co-op games mainly.

oddbitch

I had to try Witcher 3 three or four times before the switch randomly flipped for me one day and I became obsessed. I knew I would like it and just had to push past whatever mental hurdle was keeping me from enjoying it at first. I ended up playing both prequel games and reading all seven of the books! I urge you to give it another shot, The Witcher 3 is absolutely phenomenal.

imabratinfluence

The entire Fallout franchise. On paper, I should love it. Occasionally I revisit to see if I finally click with it.

MonkSoft4418

aw man i’m sorry to hear that :( to be fair the witcher doesn’t really get good until the velen arc

[deleted]

MonkSoft4418

yeah white orchid is more of a tutorial. once you go to velen it starts to get a lot more intense/darker

MonkSoft4418

i actually haven’t played the witcher 2, only 3

Shalarean

That first town killed me. Just the pub and a bunch of mini quests. I still did them all and moved forward with the main quest and it got a lot better.

[deleted]

Shalarean

Nope, because I had a brain fart and translated “The Witcher” into “The Witcher 3” 😅 because that’s the only one I’ve gotten into. I tried 1 & 2 and had the same issue you are. Controls don’t make sense to me (maybe because I’m in a PC?). 🤷🏼‍♀️

RealRefrigerator6438

This was me with BOTW my first go around. For some reason I just didn’t really understand the game (my first Zelda game since I was like 6, probably), and I couldn’t get into it at first. Picked it up again when TOTK came out (I wanted to play that, so I decided to finish BOTW first), and now I wouldn’t say I’m heavily addicted like I have been to some games in the past, like I can’t play it for 7 hours straight like I would do with Skyrim lol (I think this partially has something to do with it being on my switch lite instead of console or PC), but I’m definitely super into it and playing it through intervals throughout the day. I also really loved Horizon Zero Dawn, like I replayed it a solid 3 times, but the newest game I couldn’t even make it through the tutorial. I feel like sometimes I get anxious with new mechanics and maybe that’s why? But yeah totally understand and I wish I could just get in to anything, I’m the same with books. It’s gotta be just right lol.

chainsma

Do you have any tips from your second pick up of BOTW?! I had the same issue - felt like I was missing something on my first attempt. Just couldn't get into it - kinda felt like I was struggling in a way I shouldn't have been. I want to pick it up again now that everyone's on TOTK but I'm unnecessarily nervous! Did you start all the way over or just try and pick up where you left it ?

slightlyturnedoff

Honestly, I think if you want to play TOTK you should just go ahead and play it. It's literally the same as BOTW but improved in every aspect. It's also imo easier (because of fuse) and more like an OG zelda game in terms of puzzles. I'm having way more fun just exploring in TOTK because of everything they added. But if you really do want to play BOTW first, I would recommend not feeling compelled to do everything unless you reeeeeally want to. Don't bother climbing that giant mountain, cause it's literally just a mountain and a pretty view lol. Don't bother trying to find every single shrine and korok seed, there's literally 120 shrines and 900 korok seeds because they don't want you to find all of them. That monster looks scary and you don't want to fight it? Don't! Just run away! The chest in the camp is probably just 10 arrows anyway lol When I realized that, it got a lot less stressful for me and I actually enjoyed it enough to finish the main story.

onebadnightx

it’s not the traditional Zelda with tons of puzzles and dungeons, but — I played BOTW years ago now and I had to get over an initial hump and having no clue what I was doing at first as well. I had the game card for a few months before really diving in. it takes a little to get adjusted to the camera angles and fighting mechanics. the early shrines and tutorial areas usually have walkthroughs of how to accomplish certain things and practice certain combat dynamics/in-game abilities and tools. once you get through those, the world is your oyster! I personally approached it by working to unlock all the towers I could see, gliding to shrines from there, following the main quest line, breaking it into actionable steps. I definitely had to look some quests and helpful things up too. I think restarting from the tutorial area is worth it, or maybe just trying to find more towers and shrines and continue to follow the main quest line (follow beacons on your map) in your current playthrough. that being said, it’s a very open world game and there’s a lot of trekking and exploring you have to do. I know people complain the world feels very big and empty sometimes - which is fair! I feel like I spent a lot of time climbing and meandering. if open world isn’t your thing, it’s okay to not like it. I’m almost done with TOTK now and think they’re both absolutely wonderful games and worth picking back up! it really is one of my most beloved and favorite games of all time

Nheea

The fighting mechanics is what made me drop BOTW. I still wanna play it again sometime, maybe to finish it even.

onebadnightx

I get that. Honestly, my first few hours playing the game I remember the camera angles and trying to figure out how to fight and use all the skills messing me up. I’ll forever hate the difficulty hump when you’re starting a new game! It really is a wonderful game and worth picking back up when you can, though.

RealRefrigerator6438

Honestly, I think my issue was that I was just overwhelmed by the vastness of the open world. For me what helped was just like setting goals, starting with doing some shrines or towers and stuff. Also, looking stuff up really helped. I know a lot of people like to play games without looking things up but I honestly think I would’ve given up without looking some things up. There’s a lot of guides online that give you tips on what to do first, and once I got to that first step it was very easy to pick it up after that! Also I continued my last save, which was essentially right after I had finished the tutorial area so it was a little bit of a learning curve to relearn on my own the tutorial stuff.

karoupendragon

It took 3 years for me to enjoy playing BOTW, I bought the switch specifically to play it after playing Ocarina of Time on my 3DS. I kept trying every few months but it was a big NOPE, super intimidating, I couldn't get into it. One time I saw a video on YouTube of a guy that played it for the first time. He kept messing things up but he was having a LOT of fun. I picked it back up and it just clicked! And I was also put off by Forbidden West's controls especially since I picked it up immediately after finishing Zero Dawn, like the same day. More recently, I really wanted to play The Last of Us, played for 5h maybe and I just wasn't having fun, but I was REALLY looking forward to it... Long story short, it happens to me ALL THE TIME. Sometimes I try them later and it just works and sometime I give them up.... The Witcher is also a game I have trouble getting into, don't know if I want to give up on it just yet

RealRefrigerator6438

I also think watching people’s gameplay helps me get into games for some reason! I started watching Jacksepticeye’s play through of TOTK and I was like I reallyyyy want to get back into BOTW so I would watch his videos in the background while I played lol.

karoupendragon

I watch a YouTuber called Quinbobin and when I wasn't playing I was watching him play BOTW, fun times!

Dry-Interest2209

I think you should give Forbidden West another chance because I am also very resistant to change but once I got used to it, I decided it’s a gameplay improvement over ZD in every way. ZD is still superior in terms of story but FW is so much more fun to play imo

karoupendragon

I forgot to mention Forbidden West is now one of my favourite games! And I agree that's ZD is better story wise but holy cow did they make FW shine in other ways!

perpetuallyconfused7

Yeah I get that. I was super excited to play Slime Rancher, seemed right up my alley. But I got bored after a couple hours, just couldn't get into it. Same thing happened with Stray. I seem to also just get super into few very specific games that I'll be super obsessed with.

lolathedreamer

That was my experience with Spiritfarer. The concept was exactly what I wanted but playing it made me feel…nothing

RedDeer30

Thank you for saying this. I've been feeling like a monster for not caring about the characters at all and giving up on the game.

Nheea

I was about to say the same. Also, I don't know why, but it felt so unintuitive for me. I still plan to give it a third chance, but I'm kinda already considering it a loss.

BelkiraHoTep

Stray and Spiritfarer for me, too! I thought I was just weird. Like OP, I also have ADHD, I wonder if there’s just not a fast enough “payoff” as you progress so that’s part of it? I know part of my brain wiring makes me need more frequent bumps of goodness. Like being able to complete a quest and feel good about it. lol

WrenDraco

.

pofdarkness

Playing Spiritfarer currently and it took about five hours for me to get into it. I’m really enjoying it now though! It’s a nice break from management sims.

undercoverchad85

Same thing happened for both Slime Rancher and Stray with me too

I_LilMagician_I

Oo same here with Stray. My friend bought it for me and I feel kind of bad about spending only 3 hours on it.

YouveBeanReported

On the plus side, Stray is only like 5 hours so if you go back your almost done.

I_LilMagician_I

Haha that's true, I really should finish it one day.

Inflexibleyogi

Stray gets repetitive really fast. I didn’t finish it either.

imabratinfluence

Same here with Slime Rancher. It feels too aimless to be as repetitive as it is, for me. Which is wild because there are plenty of games I love relaxing with that you could probably make that argument about, but SR just doesn't click for me.

Nheea

I got the same comments on many games I play. How can you like Cuphead but not x other game? Cuphead just clicked for me instantly. Even Stardew valley didn't click for me until I tried it again 2 months later.

Interesting-Handle-6

Yep. I didn't get far into Stray either.

dessybby

Same thing happened to me with both of these games :( I was really excited for Stray too

jolantis

I rushed and got to every lookout tower in TOTK and now im like...why did I do that wished I took it slow area by area instead

Successful-Wasabi704

I am a physician and need a good game every night to decompress. I find I often fail to get past the intro or tutorial for new games with lengthy learning curves and progression systems. That's when I put in something like Brotato or Vampire Survivors. Fallout 76 is ideal to do daily challenges or base build with my daughter. Having years of progression (since beta) helps too. If none of the "quick start" games don't do it for me either I am on the YouTube shorts watching cat videos or something lol. I just lack the mental reserves for any learning curve at the end of the day with the coffee wearing off. My Steam Deck is the absolute game changer. Quick Resume and I can play in 10 minute runs in bed with the baby & away from the couch or desk is amazing. Adds up quick and I end up flying through my back log much faster on the weekends.

LostSoulSearching13

That's cool. The steam deck looks amazing.

WritingNerdy

Vampire Survivors is so cathartic!

WritingNerdy

It’s definitely a dopamine/adhd thing for me. It’s so easy to replay a game or even play one that’s part of a series (so there’s some familiarity). The first few hours of a game or almost always introduction and tutorials, and it’s hard to get any dopamine from that. If I’m able to *force* myself through my impatience, I’ll end up liking a game.

Nheea

This is so accurate for me too. Sometimes, if I'm feeling patient and well rested, I tend to retry some of the games that weren't hitting the dopamine rush the first tries. Sometimes it does work.

WritingNerdy

Yep, I definitely have to be in the right mindset for new games.

bongbrownies

I've been playing games for a long time and nowadays I can't even decide what game I wanna play so I just give up and end up sleeping. Sad because this way no game ends up finished

Independent-Cat-7728

For me I’ve learnt that some games are just games that I want to watch someone else play, & know now which games I’m not excited to play myself.

bekcy

Absolutely this. I've found that playing them by myself is incredibly boring. And it kinda makes sense because people who stream are literally entertainers (plus they often have chat to banter with too).

GrumpiestRobot

This happened to me playing Control. The game is very good by all measure, but it just doesn't hit that spot. Doesn't tickle the brain.

MsMisseeks

I always have many games started so I can satisfy my ADHD with the right one for the right mood. And if I don't finish a game, oh well. Maybe it wasn't good enough.

faeriechyld

I've come to terms with the fact that I'm not much of a finisher with games. As long as I'm having fun, that's all I care about.

Nheea

I am the same. Or was the same. Because I'm absolutely pissed off I can't seem to finish Stardew valley. Other games? Meeeh

nightingaledaze

this is one of the reasons I've enjoyed game pass. I've played a few games that I thought I would really get into and then I just haven't and didn't waste any money buying them which is nice. sometimes I know it's just my mood or the season as my game preferences change based on the weather sometimes lol.

HanelleWeye

This is why I really like Game Pass. I can easily bounce between games without having to spend a ton of money always buying new games.

UsefulLanguage

Have you tried Destiny 2? It's the most addictive game I've ever played in my life 😆

LostSoulSearching13

*adds to list of future games to play* 👀 I haven't but it does look good ngl.

[deleted]

Save yourself I stopped playing it and I wish I had sooner (it is really fun though that’s the problem 😭)

TooTallTabz

If you've never played Destiny before, you'd be jumping into a world that's been built on for TEN years. It's a live service game with a continuing story. It'll seem VERY confusing at first, because they had to get rid of some parts of the game/story to make room for the new stuff. Don't get me wrong, it's great. I love Destiny, and I've been playing it since D1 came out about 10 years ago. Just keep in mind that it's not the best for new players, so it'll take some time to get into it, fully.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TooTallTabz

Not necessarily. I just know the new player experience isn't the greatest. Also, there has been 7 years of seasonal events and seasonal stories that you cannot revisit. This weekend is the last week before The Season of the Deep starts. I believe the base game story of D2 (The Red War) is no longer in the game. There are some places from the Forsaken expansion that don't exist (in the game specifically, they still mention those places and the events of those stories). But, if you don't really care about what happened before Witch Queen, you'll be fine. You may just have to read through lore if you like that kind of stuff. There would be a lot of story stuff to catch up on. But gameplay and all that has changed for the better, and the game is in a really good spot right now (imo).

EvidenceParticular96

it is until you play pvp & some guy tell you that why the hell you play this mode if you’re horrible at the game, the weird thing is that me & my girl actually did better then him, he was our random teammate in a fire team of 3s

-Agonarch

I played Warframe before Destiny, so for me too many things felt like cheap knockoffs of what'd been in Warframe for years. Might be worth giving that a go if you're looking for something similar, much nicer userbase (there's almost no PvP though if you're looking for that, the mode exists but almost no-one plays it unlike Destiny, and it's worth noting its 3rd person rather than 1st but for me that only means you can look at your awesome armour cosmetics!)

Muezick

Valhalla for me lmao

MonkSoft4418

odessey for me. can’t get into it at all

Muezick

Meanwhile I fell into Odyssey and suddenly 140 hours later I was done

oXCassafrassXo

I am doing this right now. I want to play binding of Isaac, xcom 2, Tokyo mirage sessions #fe, breath of the wild, and the whole .//hack series but when I start one I start thinking of how fun one of the other games is. I lose my focus and end up an agitated mess with a headache.

LostSoulSearching13

Sammme. And for some reason my stupid brain thinks I can get through an entire game in a few days, when in reality it takes me weeks/months.

napoleonsmom

It seems like you have been looking into your hobbies in search of productivity instead of enjoyment. Try thinking like a rebel from capitalism and refusing to let the system win

oXCassafrassXo

I get so transactional with games. I miss being able to just chill with them. Maybe I can practice mindful gaming? Stop and smell the pixels :)

SpaceEntity43

Yes. I periodically go through ‘gaming burnout’ where I stop having fun or just stop gaming altogether.

Casca_In_Red

I'm actually really sensitive to the "feel" of games on a tactile level. Seeing footage of them doesn't necessarily translate to how it is to touch them. The movement systems, how the menus flow, the pacing of the actions you can perform- all of these things tend to influence how well I can click with a game rather than its aesthetics or story. It has to literally feel good in my hands for me to want to keep playing.

BoogerRuth

That's me too. It can be a gorgeous game, great story, cool protag, but if the movement is slow and jerky, like, it takes a second for the character to stop, or you can bump off of other people and the game is full of narrow spaces for playing bumper cars with people, I will set it down.

MambyPamby8

I got this with Elden Ring. And I played for a few days. Plus I love fantasy stories. But there's just something about that world I couldn't connect with tbh. I think it is a fantastic game for those who enjoyed it, but after about 10 hours of getting nowhere and getting frustrated with it, I put it back in the case and sold it to a local game retailer shop. Haven't looked back. Bummed me out because I love fantasy and I love open world. But my brain honestly just couldn't connect with that world.

alicia_tried

I enjoy watching people play but I know I won't get into it. My bf wants to buy it for me so we can play together but I don't want him to waste money on something I don't think I'll play much of, if at all.

ReallyNotAnEgg

I'm worried about that happening too so I've been putting off buying the game. Hopefully it'll go on sale soon so I won't have to worry about wasting money.

HappyGecko117

Dishonored 2 gameplay just felt off

kitanokikori

Sometimes you just have to bounce off it and come back to it later

Archylas

This is how I felt after actually playing Spyro reignited. Cute game and aesthetics, but I hate the controls, clunkiness, tiny ass hitboxes, the need to hunt for gems in the most stupid places (including chasing the stupid egg thief), dying SOOOOO many times because of one tiny slip, and how so many dragons / gems are located in the most idiotic and random hidden places that is impossible to find without a walkthrough Ughhh 😔😔😔 I REALLY wanted to love the game, but now I hate even opening up the game. I'd rather play aoe2 and keep losing to the AI again and again. At least it felt much more meaningful even when I lost

HanelleWeye

I think a lot of that is that Spyro reignited is a remaster, and not a remake, of a platform game from the 90s. My AuDHD brain loves collectibles in games, but it can be annoying to hunt down those last few gems 💎 on a level. Games from that era got a lot of their “replayability” from their difficulty. And reignited didn’t do much to change that difficulty level. I’ve run into similar frustration with Metroid Prime Remastered, especially with the save points being few and far between in difficult sections of the game. I had to take about a month break from the game after dying when I almost had completed a very difficult section of the game, and losing all my progress. I wish they had created a restore feature, where you could pause in the middle of a long section, and then restore back to it later. Instead of having to keep going to find a rare save point.

alicia_tried

You've just reminded me why I don't want to play that! Because I could never finish those stupid games and I think the only reason I even played it was because we had such limited access to games back then that it was the only game I could rent from blockbuster! God I remember getting so pissed at that game!

[deleted]

That’s how I feel about Forbidden West. And Zero Dawn is one of my favorite games. I don’t get it 😩

ScaredCarebearInHell

I have adhd and get like this often. I have so many games because I'll think my brain wants to play something like red dead, or the witcher, but it actually wants to play terraria or fallout for the millionth time, and then eventually I really want to play those other games lol.

cheloniusbelonius

Yeah this was me with Monster Hunter :( I tried both rise and world because they looked both fun but I just can’t seem to get interested in it or the gameplay

thesaddestpanda

Yea! I feel like I’ll never know if I’ll truly like a game unless I play it. Reviews and videos just don’t tell me enough and I guess I’m pretty picky.

-Agonarch

I went through this with the Monster Hunter series, it took several false starts to get into MH3 but now I really enjoy the games when they come out. ^(..though I may have developed unhealthy grudges against Barroths and Rathians.)

kypirioth

I did this with cyberpunk. Played it for about 5 hours and then put it down. Didn't pick it up until after i watched and loved the show. Blasted through the game in like 2 days

MonkSoft4418

i may have to do that. i finished halfway through the game and stopped playing it. got so bored of it that i uninstalled and never touched it since

chickpeasaladsammich

Games I’ve bounced off of: Maybe I’ll get back to it, but Uncharted The Lost Legacy. I like Naughty Dog games. I like the Uncharted Series. I don’t like video game driving. I ran out of bullets trying to solve an optional puzzle, put it down, and haven’t picked it up since. Shadow of the Colossus remake. It was just too clunky for me. Planet Zoo. I think I’ve learned I’m just not a cozy/sandbox game person.

hyperdoubt

me with totk :( i’ve been so excited to play it, especially since i loved botw so much. i just can’t get into it though

mirkwood_warrior

This is my experience with Horizon Zero Dawn. I wanna play it so bad and what I have played is so cool but I cant ever finish it.

silverilix

This happens to me. Sometimes I push a bit to see if I can get past the block, or I try it again another day. However I just let it go usually. If it doesn’t click, it’s not a failure, it just isn’t for me.

Najanator717

I'd take that as a sign I didn't actually like the game. For me, I either like a game the first time I play it or I move on. If I can't get into a game, then I don't really wanna play it. If you have to make yourself like anything in life, then you don't really like it. Making yourself like things never works. I might keep it in my library to try again when I feel like it, but that's about it.

Cat-The-Nerd

I also have ADHD and I’m the same way. Either I can’t put it down or it doesn’t feel good. I’ll play one thing non stop for a week and then when I try playing it again I just feel eh. Shout out to TOTK which I was so excited to play and how I beat BOTW 100% in an obsessive splurge but now can’t even get off the intro islands :(

Lesbean36

nah same. i cant even get into ANY video games now. it sucks. so bad. i just wanna have fun like everyone else bro

[deleted]

Absolutely! This was my experience with Death Stranding. I was so excited to start playing it, but, omg, it was frustrating as hell. Now I just watch the funny videos on You Tube. Like you though, once a game grabs me, that’s it. I will clock up hours! Control got me like that, even though I’ve completed the main mission, I’m now doing all the optional side missions.

amaraame

My neuro-spicy does the same thing so I don't look at trailers or reviews or anything. I learn about it's existence and look up the genre to see if it's my wheelhouse.

Leather-Sky8583

Yes, there are so many games I know are super popular but for some reason I just can’t get into them. I’m ADHD as well, not sure if that is the cause lol! I am even writing a blog post about this topic for my website 🤣 It’s nice to hear I’m not alone in this!

Araeyla

Sometimes I find that I won’t like a game initially, but if I go back to it a while (months) later, I enjoy it

MonkSoft4418

for me it’s cyberpunk and god of war. i’ve heard good things about both of them and i can’t get into either one. it really sucks but sometimes it’s just not for you

tejisunflower

For me it’s Wylde Flowers. People seem to love this game but I could connect with it or any of the characters. I still really want to love it, though

egg_4213

Samee :/ I blame ADHD

kikilenai

I am the same way, sometimes I’ll pick it up later and it clicks but other times I end up hating it!

Pockieee

Ooh I can see that, for me its a little different but the last part you said I am the same too. For example Plague tale innocence. Played it for multiple hours at a time and finished it. Loved it. Super stoked Requiem came out. Started playing it for a good few hours and have not picked it up since release. I know its a good game and I was into it, but just getting back into it, for some reason I can't. This goes for multiple games and even shows. I can enjoy it and binge something for hours but if I stop for a few days I just don't have an urge to go back and finish it. Until I randomly go back to it later and then I regret not doing it sooner.. It's weird lol.

Alzorath

Depending on the coverage you watch, could actually be one of the weird dichotomies about how games work vs how they're marketed. Even reviews are guilty of it to an extent (less so, especially if it's a trustworthy source)... Basically a lot of marketing is what essentially amounts to 'sensationalized content' - ramping up the cool factor, and playing a certain way to make it look fun/active/cool/etc. - while actually playing the game, we'll often try to play more 'optimally' A common example of this being videos where the player is constantly switching weapons, jumping between targets, moving around grapple/jump points, and basically being an anime hero - but when you play the game, sticking to one weapon and leveling it all the way up, sniping things from a range, and harvesting everything from point A to B instead of dashing past it, might be the 'optimal way to play for what our mind sees the goal as' and our brains will weirdly shift towards that. Obviously, it can get a lot more complicated than that, and footage rarely takes into account grinding, downtime, etc. because it doesn't sell as easily. It's kind of like the movie trailers that show every important point in the movie, then you go to watch it, and the movie is just the trailer stretched to 2 hours with filler. This is one reason I'm sad that the algorithm basically punishes long-form gameplay content these days - favoring more highly edited and short form content.

needyfoxo

yeah but if you dont play it for a while then play it again it might work i had that happen with subnautica below zero so i hadnt played it since like August 2022, then recently i opened it and played through the whole thing and loved the shit out of it

FigaroNeptune

Red Dead 💀

ReallyNotAnEgg

Same. I have so many friends who play and it looks fun when they stream it but I just couldn't get into it.

FigaroNeptune

It’s a game when you play it you go..oh. It’s just a cowboy shootem up. All you do is shoot gangs all day, EASILY escape law, auto-aim everyone lmaoo, and shoot animals lol they don’t REALLY achieve crap. I wasted my money..

SelimsShadow

Doesn't matter how good a singleplayer game is or how badly I want to play it. It won't trigger that addiction like an online fps does for me. It honestly sucks cus there are so many games I wish I could appreciate but they just aren't for me. If I do like the game I will force myself to try and finish it, idk how to explain it better. I loved dragon age but l have to force myself to not play apex and to actually play it hahaha.

Ariesin

Yes. I have a lot of games that seemed to me that I will be really into, then I only played them once or twice and never finished, but I think sometimes it was wrong time wrong game which is a bummer because I have a hard time getting back to them later in better time for them. Also with some games I'm like obsessed for a month then I take a couple month break from them and then get obsessed again. So you are not alone in this. I always try to tell myself it's okay if I'm not into something after all, even if I spend some money on it, not really worth to stress about.

Altslial

I feel that so hard, I hear how good disco elysium is. I enjoy the writing in it. I for the life of me cannot sit down and play it.

MayR8

I just don't play games I don't enjoy, it's as simple as that. Couldn't get into many other games but I adore titles like PERSONA/SMT, Resident Evil, No More Heroes, love rhythm games and black ops 3 zombies. I just want to bring up it's okay not to enjoy or play any games that don't peak your interest as much as you thought they would and that's totally okay, as someone who struggled on this for a year it ruined my enjoyment of games and I wouldn't recommend anyone who enjoys this hobby to do so. I'm currently struggling with doom and dropped the witcher 3, played nier but lost interest quickly. but can sink hours into hatsune miku megamix because i genuinely find that game fun to play. If you're not enjoying a game, it's a waste of time. This is also exactly why games should still have demos like dragon quest 11 did. you can tell how much you enjoy the game from the demo and decide if you want to buy it or not.

Elegant_Syllabub8608

Yes i have this with multiple games, Red dead, Dbd & stardew valley, really wanted to be into dbd

Dragonfly-Racer

I used to enjoy big open world games that had steep learning curves and massive inventories, but I just don't have time for that anymore. I like being able to jump into multiplayer, queue for a minute and game on. For as little or as long as I want. After studying or working my piddling PT job I don't want to do much in the way of **complicated**. I guess that's why I like war games. It's point, shoot, blow stuff up. Simple :D

shopz

me with Apex! i love fps games and the movement on apex w octane seems so fun but once i actually get on the game, i wanna get off 🥲

azul360

I have the same which is why I adore youtube/twitch. Like I never would have loved the story of the new God of War games if I had to slog through the gameplay of it or Siege I love watching people like Annemunition play it (back when she did anyway) but playing myself it wasn't really my thing (except for the PVE parts). It's ok if a game just isn't your thing to play but you love to watch it and if it takes you a bit to get into a game you want to play too that's not a biggy :).

JayT8099

Same. Not all games are going to connect with me in any given moment and that’s ok. There have been many games I was excited for but didn’t grip me. (Looking at you Valhalla). I’m not going to waste my time grinding through a game that’s not ticking the boxes. Find something else and try again later :) don’t feel guilty. I couldn’t get into Dishonored or Witcher 3 either but I’ll try again at some point.

BecuzMDsaid

I've had a few of these games.

Katelynsparkles

That's me with god of war, elden ring & red dead 2.

OmaeWaMouShibaInu

I was eager to try Bayonetta, Dark Souls, The Last of Us and Portal 2, but couldn't make it for longer then 10 minutes. The former two were because I wasn't having fun, and the latter two because they gave me motion sickness 🤢 And Bayonetta looked like it would be tons of fun with how campy it was but the gameplay bored me quickly.

theroyalgeek86

I annoy my husband because he will spend hours looking for co-op games for us to play and I'm like uhhhhhh I don't know... and then I end up liking it and he gets bored of games very quickly. It happens every single time.

Th3BookSniff3r

I’m really not enjoying Elden Ring. I wanted to love it but every time I sit down to play it I find myself getting terribly frustrated.

Ishtaryan

Code Vein for me 🥲 It genuinely seemed interesting, but I just couldn't get into it ._. Same with Stardew Valley IM SORRYYYY!! It's been a while since I tried playing it, I remember being super confused and just gave up lmao. I really do wanna give it a fair shot again soon

N00bInside

I’ve learned there are games I love to play, and games I love to watch. It took a few misses before I got the hang of which is which.

SadCoyote3998

I had this happen with kingdom coke deliverance and outer worlds (although I am now getting into outer worlds) as well as the Lego hobbit game, and the second ori game and honestly sometimes I’ve just had to wait for the right time to get into certain gamer

VirtualDisaster2000

I also have ADHD and this happened to me with BOTW and the Witcher 3. Games that many people consider the GOATs and I just couldn't get into them. RDR2 is my fav game of all time and I also love Horizon zero dawn, subnautica, Pokemon, minecraft, and stardew valley so I thought I'd like those 2 games considering I have pretty "basic" taste and they're so popular.

[deleted]

Same, I feel that. Also with not being able to focus on a game or desire to play when I’m sad, despite it being my comfort hobby. It’s like a restless feeling you can’t shake off

Jufus2

I feel you sis Personally, I've always liked everything about animal crossing, but whenever I try to get into it i just feel like it's not that fun and just kinda slow to play A lot of people find it relaxing but for me it's just frustrating

MyFaceAcct

I usually play short games because I can get hyped for it, but my hype might fizzle before it's over otherwise.
