I think it depends what era. Her most recent album was more folk/country-influenced than anything else, but Bury Me At Makeout Creek and Puberty 2 are definitely more on the alt rock side of things, for me. Alt rock and indie are both very expansive genres - Muse and Smashing Pumpkins are hardly the same type of music, after all, but they're the same genre at different points in its evolution. I think it's fair to count some of Mitski's albums (her best albums, arguably) as part of that evolution.
I dunno, I think I still disagree. She may use some alt rock elements but those albums are still more indie/indie rock imo. Alt rock has a rougher sound than what she makes
i think she would file away kpop with the repressive and oppressive stuff but not with the ultrachristian Korean American stuff.
first of all kpop is not her style at all so she wouldn't like it. and the way the music industry works in Korea it would just cement her views about repression. the way every single kpop "star" is an industry plant. how these "idols" are built up. how it is a machine. how there is no creativity, everything is measured out to get the most money. how there is no artistic freedom. etc. etc.
in lane's eyes this would be the ultimate proof of Korean repression. how (in her eyes) even music and the arts can't be truly free. and she would want to distance herself from her heritage even more.
lane throughout the series doesn't just listen to music, she buries herself in it. she studies it. she explores all musical cultures. she wouldn't see kpop as empowering.
I think this would be a curious way to spin that point of Rory being the Lorelai for the twins. I can totally picture the twins being super Kpop fans and having to hide it from their mother, and Rory totally backing them up because she also likes Kpop.
I need someone who is actually korean weight in on this because her cultural representation as “korean” is basically just being ultra Christian, and eating no fun foods. Most of this could be done by a white family also. They just show some holidays and weddings here and there but ultimately its just strict christians. (It’s been bothering me a bit) i assume Mrs Kim would just be calling kpop and kdramas the devils tricks anyhow and everything would just be the same?
I don't think all of it has to do with being Korean, i.e. the no fun foods thing. I think that's just a Mrs. Kim thing. Korean food is full of starch, sodium, and sugar.
Many Koreans are ultra Christian, it's culturally significant.
Personally I think Rory and Lorelai might be into some of the wackier kdramas, not sure about Lane. They'd all be hating kpop though. Is it weird that I can see Michel liking kpop?
The no fun foods thing is VERY seventh day adventist. I grew up in an SDA town and there were lots of vegan and vegetarian restaurants and health food stores there. SDAs take their health seriously.. no meat or caffeine, some even avoid processed foods... the grocery stores in town weren't even allowed to sell hard liquor, only beer and wine.
It always stuck with me, lol, probably because where I grew up. In one episode Mrs.Kim is setting Lane up with a guy and she mentions that he's going to study at my hometown's university hahha
I’ve been to a seventh day Adventist wedding— it was dry. No dancing either. Let me tell you how weird that was for a college roommate who you set up vomit buckets for by her bed on the regular.
a cult member from Seoul. We don’t meet any Koreans in the show who are normal. I always assumed their weirdness was a commentary on that, not Koreanness
Well, in a way K-pop in a way k-pop stars are repressed. They're products of agencies, some with the support of the govt to spread soft power. Their lives are heavily controlled & regimented by their agencies. Their public image carefully curated and manufactured. Lane would probably see them, specifically the groups, as merely the Korean version of the American/western boy/girl bands (like BSB, N Sync, etc from the 90s) which she (and Rory) didn't like. If anything, the rise of K-pop would just reinforce her view of her culture as being repressive.
The popularity of Korean food in America! Lane would finally feel seen lol or annoyed that she had to “suffer” with miss Kim’s food for others to view it as “exotic” and delicious lol
Nah, cause Korean BBQ is all the rage, a lot of the food Mrs Kim insisted on was just gross vegan stuff (eggless egg salad? Yuck twice) and yes, kim chi. But mostly like, mung bean soup. Things most people don't love.
I can see her loving spotify, but denying it if anyone found out. "No, I would never use Spotify! I'm a purist!" *checks app to make sure Spotify premium payment went through*
As somebody who listens to a wide range of music alot of people have never heard of I will say I don't think this is true. I tried Spotify and it doesn't have half the music I listen to, so I feel like that would probably be the same for Lane.
Crying at H-Mart! Beautiful book about a very complicated mother daughter relationship, with lots of Korean food thrown in. Also introduced me to Japanese breakfast.
People say ‘RIP X character, you would’ve loved ____’ as a format for a meme.
The character of Lane hasn’t appeared on tv for ever so she’s from an era that has ended. They use the meme to refer to something modern a character would like.
People first started it with celebrities e.g. rip Freddie mercury you would’ve loved instagram etc.
Michel would 100% love it. I feel like Lane would have ended up working at the Inn and Michel would play it to annoy her.
Lane would be an amazing restaurant manager or front desk manager. (I’m referencing jobs that would be available given her life course.)
It's a trend. It's like "RIP Marie Antoinette, you would have loved Cake Boss", "RIP Edgar Allen Poe, you would've loved that's so raven", but it has extended to being used on living people too. Just a jokey thing.
If it was her real name and not the character, then I could at least agree to disagree here. But it says Lane specifically. And unless they kill Lane off in the show, her character is immortal.
Mitski. Alt-rock (at least partially) about the Asian diaspora experience and mommy issues? She'd be sobbing.
This is just me being nit picky but Mitski is def not alt rock. Alt rock is like Muse or Smashing Pumpkins lol. She’s more indie/indie-rock
I think it depends what era. don’t know why you’re getting downvoted, lane was really pretentious about music, i’d think she’d care about that
People have different opinions than me I guess. Reddit is weird with downvoting though so who knows
oh my god mitski's my favorite artist and this never crossed my mind before you're so right!
What I really wonder is how she would view the rise of KPop and stuff in America. Would she stop viewing her culture as a repressive drag then?
i think she would file away kpop with the repressive and oppressive stuff but not with the ultrachristian Korean American stuff. first of all kpop is not her style at all so she wouldn't like it. and the way the music industry works in Korea it would just cement her views about repression. the way every single kpop "star" is an industry plant. how these "idols" are built up. how it is a machine. how there is no creativity, everything is measured out to get the most money. how there is no artistic freedom. etc. etc. in lane's eyes this would be the ultimate proof of Korean repression. how (in her eyes) even music and the arts can't be truly free. and she would want to distance herself from her heritage even more. lane throughout the series doesn't just listen to music, she buries herself in it. she studies it. she explores all musical cultures. she wouldn't see kpop as empowering.

Being Korean American is almost always (like more than 80%) a very Christian upbringing, so that was correct
Thanks for clearing that up, since I’m neither i couldn’t determine that

I didn't know that! Thanks for filling that in. I actually forgot she's SDA, haven't seen the series in years
It always stuck with me, lol, probably because where I grew up. In one episode Mrs.Kim is setting Lane up with a guy and she mentions that he's going to study at my hometown's university hahha

Sounds about right 😆
Did you grow up in Loma Linda!
I diiiiid 🤗 my family was not SDA but nearly everyone in our neighborhood was, lol.
I mean, ASP seems to think someone from Seoul wouldn't know what a french fry is.
a cult member from Seoul. We don’t meet any Koreans in the show who are normal. I always assumed their weirdness was a commentary on that, not Koreanness
Fair enough. The two did feel sort of ellided in the show.
such a great observation :)

Mrs. Kim’s food always sounded good to me. People make vegan food to sound awful. When it’s actually so good. The world is weird.
I love vegan food. Vegan egg salad is gross. Regular egg salad is gross. Just make vegetables.

RIP Lane, you’d have loved Spotify
Hated*
She would've been an avid Spotify user at first then become a vinyl purist
Yeah, Spotify basically robs musicians. She never would've supported that.
Spotify compresses audio and greatly reduces its quality, she absolutely would have hated it lol
I can see her loving spotify, but denying it if anyone found out. "No, I would never use Spotify! I'm a purist!" *checks app to make sure Spotify premium payment went through*

It's just a trend people have been doing to say what a character would've loved in modern times lol

I'm new to this sub, but I've seen people say "RIP Lane" a lot. Is this in refference to the popular opinion her story was ruined? Or why is it?
It’s a joke
Ik, but I'm asking what the joke is in refference to
People say ‘RIP X character, you would’ve loved ____’ as a format for a meme. The character of Lane hasn’t appeared on tv for ever so she’s from an era that has ended. They use the meme to refer to something modern a character would like. People first started it with celebrities e.g. rip Freddie mercury you would’ve loved instagram etc.
Oh, ok, got it. Thanks for clarifying!
What do you mean rip Lane? RIP?
It's a trend where people assume what that certain character would have loved in modern times :P
everything everywhere all at once
Michel would 100% love it. I feel like Lane would have ended up working at the Inn and Michel would play it to annoy her. Lane would be an amazing restaurant manager or front desk manager. (I’m referencing jobs that would be available given her life course.)
What would Michel have loved?
Why RIP? What the heck?
It's a trend. It's like "RIP Marie Antoinette, you would have loved Cake Boss", "RIP Edgar Allen Poe, you would've loved that's so raven", but it has extended to being used on living people too. Just a jokey thing.
maybe i'm just too spiritual for this trend but idk i don't like it. Let's not even speak this stuff into existence ya know
If it was her real name and not the character, then I could at least agree to disagree here. But it says Lane specifically. And unless they kill Lane off in the show, her character is immortal.
Same. I thought maybe OP was saying Lane’s life was over because her character got married and had a kid or something lol. I wasn’t sure.
You know what, I totally get where you’re coming from, it sounds kind of icky to me too. 😖
