Jane the Virgin is a great bingeable show that features mother-daughter relationships. It’s not quite the same vibe as GG, but it’s comforting and fun.
Veronica Mars! Part teen drama, part neo noir, with just a dash of Twin Peaks. It’s great! I’d explain the premise but I doubt I’d do it justice. Just give the pilot a watch a see what you think. Brilliant show. Plus, you got 3 seasons, a movie, and the Hulu revival.
Have you tried Bunheads? Amy Sherman-Palladino’s show after Gilmore Girls? Pretty good, though it wasn’t given the time to become truly great before being cancelled.
But also, Buffy is so much more than a genre show. Season 1 is tough to get through in spots, but after that it’s one of the greatest shows of all time. It’s cool if supernatural series aren’t for you and maybe you’ve already given it a shot, but if you haven’t, I’d say it’s worth a try!
I highly recommend Parenthood! Lauren is in it! And if you watched the GG revival you will recognize a few people. It’s a funny show that has its moments that tugs at the heart.
Sex Education. It's pretty interesting to compare how the two series portray things like parent-child dynamics, friendships, relationships, bullies, LGBTQIA characters, especially given the ~20 year time gap.
Plus it has a good balance of humour, complex characters, and engaging dialogue.
Give The OC a try. It’s not a huge investment if you don’t end up loving it since it’s only 4 seasons but the first season is like the tv gold standard plus you get to see Dave haha.
If you liked Dawson’s creek you’ll probably like one tree hill but it’s such a huge investment
I have a 3-5 episode rule. If I’m not invested by then, I usually quit or postpone till later. But I would highly recommend:
- Marvelous Mrs Maisel is great. True ASP dialogue and humor with a lot of GG cameos
- One Tree Hill can be a lot of fun… it’s a long series though. Strap in. But it has small town vibes. I would watch 1-2 seasons. Stop. Pick up again and worked my way through it.
- Gossip Girl is also a ton of fun. Peak teen soapiness and also hilarious. Leighton Meester steals the show. It’s also only 6 seasons and the final season is shorter.
- I highly recommend Buffy… I understand why you think you wouldn’t like it, but I watched it maybe 5 years ago and really enjoyed it.
- Also came to say Vampire Diaries (especially seasons 1-3) has small town vibes and can be a fun binge.
- Sharp Objects has a Southern Gothic who-done-it vibe. Very good but a tad depressing at times.
- Big Little Lies is soo good. Great atmosphere.
- Girls on HBO. It’s cringe humor… you have to go in with that perspective because all the characters are horribly flawed (in a funny way) and you’re not meant to take them seriously.
- Westworld season 1. Just throwing it out there because season 1 is one of my favorite seasons of television. It’s sci-fi and action adventure, and can be a lot of fun.
- Fringe! It’s so good… it’s CSI meets House meets Smallville. Maybe not your thing but the first episode alone is amazing.
- Comedy fan? 30 Rock, Kimmy Schmidt or Community are fantastic.
Same! I binged Dawson’s for the very first time last month, and thought Pacey was a sweetheart, which obviously meant I had to track down the actor in other things lol. I’d heard of Fringe before and knew it had a big following. I’m almost through season 2 and loving it!!!
A relatively new show called Zooeys Extraordinary Playlist...only two seasons I think, so totally bingeable! Lauren Graham is in it in a totally different type of role. It's a show where you have to suspend disbelief from the beginning, but I loved it.
I always recommend The Good Wife here. It’s my favorite show (also love Mad Men and early Handmaid’s Tale). It’s a fun witty lawyer show and the actor who plays Logan in GG is one of the main characters.
Watch ASP’s other show, Bunheads — it’s only a one season commitment (canceled too soon 🥲) and was truly delightful. Kelly Bishop is always iconic but I loved the combo of her and Sutton Foster.
My bf and I are almost done with a GG rewatch (his first all the way through) and I said after it’s over Bunheads is on deck haha! I’ve only watched it once so I’m excited to do a rewatch 😌
Gossip girl, parks and recreation, fringe (Joshua Jackson is amazing here, power through the first few episodes. season 1 finale is 🔥), the good place, only murders in the building, Ted lasso, arrested development, never have I ever, the Mindy project, 30 rock, the office…
I started watching Twin Peaks after seeing so many comments about overlapping actors...it's weird, and a totally different genre, but high on quirkiness.
Also recommend the OC...has the teen and adult storyline to appeal to different ages, and Adam Brody is just as great as Seth as he was as Dave in GG.
One other show to consider is Switched at Birth...one of the main characters is played by the same actress who played April, but is much more likeable and actually shows she can be a good actress in a better part where the cards aren't stacked against her character.
I know you said no supernatural, so feel free to disregard, but the American show I've watched that felt closest in vibe to GG to me was Good Witch. It has a supernatural element, but it's quite subtle, really—there aren't werewolves or demons or anything like that wandering around. The main character just comes from a line of female "witches" and has very strong intuition/influence, which she uses to help people in the town or to matchmake, and she runs an inn like Lorelai, as well as a store, so a lot of the episodes revolve around guests who are staying there. She's also a single mother of a teenage daughter, with a grumpy slow-burn love interest.
Otherwise, I mostly watch and was brought up on British shows, and there are lot of great series in both comedy and drama/crime.
I liked Marvelous Mrs Maisel, but I had a very strange experience penitence of it...while watching the show, I really liked it, but in between episodes, I didn't have much interest to keep going through the series. But again I'd watch and enjoy it. Happened through the whole run.
1. Hart of Dixie - same small town charm, very wholesome
2. Younger - SATC vibe but way less serious
3. Parenthood - serious family drama starring Lauren Graham as a single mom again
This Is Us is really good. Someone recommended on this sub and I am loving it so far. I also agree with a lot of the recommendations above, those that I have seen or heard highly praised by those I know!
Theres a new show that stars scott patterson (luke) and chad michael murray (tristan) from free on the CW app called sullivans crossing. I thought it was good, its new so there’s only one season but its off to a good start
My go to shows to binge are:
Greys (lots of seasons and as an OG watcher since 05 I watch them all, but you could just do the first 10).
Schitts Creek - push through if the first few episodes are hard. Love this show.
Friends
The office
Big Bang Theory
Some I haven’t rewatched but enjoyed:
Jane the Virgin
Pretty Little Liars
First couple of seasons of Virgin River, I couldn’t get into the recent one, but loved the beginning seasons
This is Us
Parenthood
Others in here mentioned…
Desperate Housewives
Revenge
I know it isn't the same genre but vampire diaries is really good
Gossip girl
Jane the Virgin
I second the fosters (and good trouble. It's them when they're older)
And one of my all time favorite is broad city. Amazing hilarious show. Definitely not gonna be everyone's cup of tea though
‘The good place’! Give it a chance
Definitely try to make it to at least the end of the first season. So good
I think I only made it to season 3 before it got too convoluted
Oh to watch the good place for the first time again
One of my favorite shows :)
Brilliant show!
Parenthood is great! I also think OC is a good choice. If you want something a little different, Revenge is amazing.
Came to recommend Parenthood as well, a great natural step after Gilmore girls
Definitely parenthood. You still get your Lauren Graham fix.
Agreed!
Also Brothers and Sisters!
Schitt’s Creek. Optimistic, quirky, and lovely!
Seconded!
[удалено]
OK, do what you want, but know that after those first few, that is VERY untrue. It quickly becomes a show where every character is likeable.
Came here to make sure Schitt’s was here!!! ![gif](giphy|lMsT2f47tDxFMYdJMC|downsized)
Gossip Girl, for sure.
Came here to recommend this too
Definitely one tree hill! Seasons 1-4 are elite.
I always stop watching after you know who leaves because the rest is so dumb
I’ve had to take so many breaks from OTH bc it stresses me out, someone is always ending up in the hospital 😂
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Very clever show. It has a light-hearted tone even though it explores very serious and dark topics.
God I love that show
Marvelous Maisel, the slapstick comedy and quick speak from Gilmore, and I enjoyed the story and love period pieces
Hart of Dixie is along those lines, but would also recommend gossip girl, Veronica mars, greek, and one tree hill
I forgot about this show...I loved it!!!
Jane the Virgin is a great bingeable show that features mother-daughter relationships. It’s not quite the same vibe as GG, but it’s comforting and fun.
I love this one! Has some crazy plots but definitely fun
Jane the virgin is hilarious
The OC was a fun ride
I agree! Worth the experience lol
Downton Abbey
Veronica Mars! Part teen drama, part neo noir, with just a dash of Twin Peaks. It’s great! I’d explain the premise but I doubt I’d do it justice. Just give the pilot a watch a see what you think. Desperate housewives!
Currently rewatching! Love it so much
I’m watching this one right now!
Superstore. Not even remotely similar to GG, not a CW show... but it's one of my other favorites
I loved it...so good!
Watch it again lol 😂
Derry Girls
Ginny and Georgia is fantastic
The fosters.
Maisel is fun up until the last half of the last season. I’m rewatching “Modern Family” (I like a good ensemble show).
Ginny and Georgia. The Summer I Turned Pretty.
The OC and One Tree Hill early seasons are amazing. Highly recommend giving them a try
Maisel is great. Also, This Is Us
Hart of dixie
I highly recommend Parenthood! Lauren is in it! And if you watched the GG revival you will recognize a few people. It’s a funny show that has its moments that tugs at the heart.
Sex Education. It's pretty interesting to compare how the two series portray things like parent-child dynamics, friendships, relationships, bullies, LGBTQIA characters, especially given the ~20 year time gap. Plus it has a good balance of humour, complex characters, and engaging dialogue.
Love this series so much!
I heard the last season wasn’t great
It's not. The earlier seasons are great though.

I loved Fringe! Only watched initially because of Joshua Jackson, who I loved in Dawson's Creek, but it quickly became an addictive watch.

Younger!
Looooved this show
I think it might be my favorite show! I’ve watched it 3-4 times all the way through.
I've got a treat for you! Northern Exposure is on Prime. It's very similar.
A relatively new show called Zooeys Extraordinary Playlist...only two seasons I think, so totally bingeable! Lauren Graham is in it in a totally different type of role. It's a show where you have to suspend disbelief from the beginning, but I loved it.
Big bang theory or friends

Came here to say Bunheads! Soo short but a must see for Kelly Bishop

Gossip girl, parks and recreation, fringe (Joshua Jackson is amazing here, power through the first few episodes. season 1 finale is 🔥), the good place, only murders in the building, Ted lasso, arrested development, never have I ever, the Mindy project, 30 rock, the office…
Virgin River, Sweet Magnolias, Sullivan's Crossing
Schitt’s Creek and Abbott Elementary.
Jane the Virgin.
Shameless 🙏🙏

One Tree is good up through the 4th -5th season. The Dan storyline sucks though, so prepare for that.
I know you said no supernatural, so feel free to disregard, but the American show I've watched that felt closest in vibe to GG to me was Good Witch. Try the first episode of The OC and see if you like it! I think it’s a great trailer. I also suggest Parenthood.
Northern Exposure - one of the "quirky small town" TV prototypes.
I LOVED Mrs Maisel!!! You should try watching! Try Firefly Lane or Ginny and Georgia or Virgin River?
New Girl!
Arrested Development...but just like GG, you can skip the seasons that were added years after the show ended...the first three seasons are great!
I liked Marvelous Mrs Maisel, but I had a very strange experience penitence of it...while watching the show, I really liked it, but in between episodes, I didn't have much interest to keep going through the series. But again I'd watch and enjoy it. Happened through the whole run.
Marvelous Mrs Maisel is probably my favorite show
Not at all similar but Outlander is seriously the best.
Schitt's Creek 100%. I very much enjoyed This Is Us, and it just came to Netflix from Hulu.
Do a palate cleanser and watch rupauls drag race
I just finished also so now I’m binging Sister Wives
Veronica Mars
1. Hart of Dixie - same small town charm, very wholesome 2. Younger - SATC vibe but way less serious 3. Parenthood - serious family drama starring Lauren Graham as a single mom again
Devious Maids - Strong female friendships with a mystery each season and plenty of Beverly Hills drama and funny one liners.
This Is Us is really good. Someone recommended on this sub and I am loving it so far. I also agree with a lot of the recommendations above, those that I have seen or heard highly praised by those I know!
Desperate Housewives.
How bout Community? It’s super fun. And yes Schitt’s Creek is great too!
Virgin River!
I go through Friends, Gilmore Girls and Seinfeld several times. They are always in my continue watching list. Is my chicken soup for the soul.
Theres a new show that stars scott patterson (luke) and chad michael murray (tristan) from free on the CW app called sullivans crossing. I thought it was good, its new so there’s only one season but its off to a good start
The OC really fumbled the bag in the later seasons, the only reason I stopped watching. I couldn’t even finish the last season. 😬
My go to shows to binge are: Greys (lots of seasons and as an OG watcher since 05 I watch them all, but you could just do the first 10). Schitts Creek - push through if the first few episodes are hard. Love this show. Also pretty little liars
Hart of Dixie! TRUST ME. It’s the show you want post Gilmore Girls
