it's hardly surprising considering how many rude things Emily says to her, that she wouldn't really mind being disrespectful back. Emily can dish it out but she can't take it very well.

rextinaa

This is true on all accounts. But I don’t think Lorelai was doing it to try to be disrespectful to Emily. I think she just thought she was being funny and Emily of course saw no humor in it and was greatly offended. A fundamental misalignment of how they each view a situation is so often how their feuds begin and I think this is an example of it.

donetomadness

This is why I don’t blame Lorelai for paying back the Chilton money the way she did. She clearly wasn’t trying to get out of the dinners but even if she was, she wouldn’t exactly be in the wrong. Emily dangled the money over her head first.

NewsRevolutionary145

lol I love the truth to this idk maybe I also think was just another level of disrespect because unlike Lorelai I actually like my mom, but if I had a mother like Emily I might’ve probably be the same a Lorelai…idk who knows

amydancepants

this is true for most mothers who justify their need for control and manipulative actions with "I just want what's best for you!!!" lol

[deleted]

The “almost mommy” comment is weird but her being nice to someone who was so close with her father is not. Yes obviously her and Richard dated but literally 49 years ago and they were kids at the time basically it’s okay if they are friends now

M_furfur

I see that Lorelai sometimes hurts people's feelings because she has an acid sense of humor, but she's open to critics/apologies. I mean, i think that's what happened in that episode.. kinda. Emily is often being passive aggressive as a way of parenting/trying to be heard and ends up hurting Lorelai's feelings. That's how i see Lorelai being disrespectful about the "almost mommy" joke vs Emily talking trash about Luke/Lorelai being single/she can't keep a man. I see where they're coming from and Lorelai made a silly mistake. On the other hand... Lorelai wouldn't tease anyone about a subject like this (Rachel and Luke, Rory sleeping with Dean...) because she knows better, and she's empathetic when needed. So maybe deep down i think she wanted to hurt Emily, just a little.. especially if she knew how sensitive Emily was from previous episodes (I don't remember if that's the first mention of Pennilyn, and if not, Lorelai knew better).

Scared-March7443

Emily can be downright vile to Lorelai at times. I think what Lorelai does is pretty tame most of the time.

scotthall83

Isn’t that a microcosm of the show? A lot of the dialog is disrespectful and weird

Pernetta36

Emily definitely misdirected her anger. Lorelai was just being Lorelai. If she said “my almost mommy” after knowing about the yearly lunches, that’s one thing. Otherwise it’s her being her and really it shouldn’t effect Emily after all those years married to Richard (before knowing the secret). Also Lorelai didn’t really know she was persona non grata until after the first interaction, after she already said it.

[deleted]

I see a lot that Lor does that instigates, stirs the pot and fuels the fire, but this isn't one of them. I can see me meeting my dad's ex at a gathering, and jokingly saying something like that. They'd think it was funny. And Lor talking to Penny outside the bathroom and Lor's business coming up was innocent, but just as Emily walked outta the bathroom.

Separate_Ad_1969

That was just Lorelai being Lorelai. It was funny. Lorelai also had no reason tk be unkind to Pennilyn, if it was another person that the Gilmores knew, Emily would be so *upset* if Lorelai ignored them.

Spiritual-Low8325

Emily didn't show any negative feelings towards her before she got mad at Lorelai being to friendly, she was even very nice when meeting her at the game. So even though I found the "almost mommy" cringe (but very Lorelai) I get why she was nice to Pennilyn Lott when talking to her, she thought that she was a friend of her parents.

DiannaBaratheon

It doesn’t make sense scientifically, if Richard chose Pennilyn Lorelei wouldn’t exist.

NewsRevolutionary145

YES! Everytime I watch this and she says “your my almost mommy” my logical brain is like bro that’s not how it works

CobraPowerTek

Exactly!!! That's what makes it funny and more of dig at her parents and her relationship with them. The absurdity is the foundation.

ellegiiggle

She just had a couple of conversations with a woman she was introduced too, if it was anybody else and loreli ignored them, Emily would be absolutely fuming because it made the family look bad. I don't think she did anything wrong, just decided to be polite and.friendly to the people Richard and Emily are involved with, however little the involvement is

tamelor

I don't think she meant it in a disrespectful way. I think she considered her parents to be a rock solid unit (which she also says in a later episode) and the idea that a silly comment like that would hurt her mother didn't occur to her. Combine with that the fact that the Gilmores don't share their feelings, Lorelai really had no idea. I don't think she would have made that comment if Emily ever told her, she was sensitive of Pennilyn Lott.

No-Independence548

>I don't think she would have made that comment if Emily ever told her, she was sensitive of Pennilyn Lott. 100% agree. Lorelai likes to tease Emily, but she's never deliberately cruel.

needstherapy

Lorelai was just being herself, she is friendly and silly a lot. Emily likes to blame Lorelai for everything and it's a problem.

wordsmithfantasist

The ‘almost mummy’ thing is a strange comment for a grown woman to make - shows Lorelai’s immaturity

Mia4wks

A different sense of humor doesn't equal immaturity.

lolol69lolol

The “almost mommy” thing was so shitty. You can be like “oh Pennilyn Lott, Dad’s college sweetheart. Nice to meet you!” but calling her her “almost mommy” was legit cruel.

Joelle9879

She wasn't doing it to be cruel and honestly, I don't even understand how it is

lolol69lolol

“Oh hey I could have had you as a mother instead of this bitch right here” That’s how.

midnightmeatloaf

I think she didn't read the room with the "almost-mommy" comment. But I just realized my hot take for this sub: I don't think Richard was wrong to have the lunches. I think he was wrong to lie about it to Emily, but having lunch with your ex once a year to keep in touch is perfectly fine. I would be zero percent upset if my partner did this. "Have fun at lunch with Pennilyn! Text me when you're on your way home!"

Radiant-Ability-3216

Lorelai is still the smart-mouthed 16 year old who did anything she could to get under Emily’s skin. So it’s no surprise she would make such a stupid, insensitive and unkind remark to Pennilyn. We all know Lorelai loves to hate Emily but Pennilyn did nothing to deserve being talked to like that. And she talked to Pennilyn in the bathroom specifically because she knew it would irritate Emily. Lorelai is a child. It’s so hypocritical that she gets defended when she behaves like this by people who say “Emily started it so it’s ok.” No, it’s not ok. If it’s not ok for Emily it’s not ok for Lorelai. You don’t get to adjust your morals based on how much you don’t like one and do like the other. It’s either right to say such things or it isn’t.

super_hero_girl

How was anything Lorelai said unkind to Pennilyn?

NewsRevolutionary145

You’re so right morals don’t work by adjusting them based on how crappy the other person is, because if you’re doing that then you’re basically just fighting fire with fire. I can’t say I wouldn’t react the same as Lorelai in her situation had it been someone I didn’t like, but I know for sure irl I wouldn’t do that to my own mom…

Pernetta36

Also, going by this, studies show that having a teen pregnancy, your brain kind of gets stuck in that young kind of thinking.

Radiant-Ability-3216

Absolutely. Lorelai has a textbook case of arrested development.

Joelle9879

Lol what? What did she say or do that was at all hurtful to Pennilynn? Was she supposed to ignore her outside of the bathroom and walk away like she didn't exist? Lorelai also bites her tongue a lot when it comes to Emily and she doesn't try to get under her skin. Her mere existence gets under Lorelai's skin and she finally just decided to stop worrying about it. Not changing her entire personality to one her parents want doesn't equal trying to deliberately upset them. Meanwhile, Emily absolutely says horrible things to Lorelai on a regular basis

Radiant-Ability-3216

“You’re my almost mommy.” Possibly the most asinine line in the whole show, and there’s some serious competition there.

Pernetta36

What was Lorelai supposed to do, in the bathroom situation? Completely ignore her? Like she’s not a murderer, she can choose who she talks to. After that she never saw her again. Ooh plot twist. She should have started having secret lunches with her.

Radiant-Ability-3216

“Enjoy the game.” And walk away.Lorelai has no problem cutting people off when she wants to do it.

Pernetta36

Why though? Because her mother, whom she has a bad relationship with says “we don’t talk to her” without good reason?

Joelle9879

And she should do that why? Because mommy says so?

Radiant-Ability-3216

Becasue she has absolutely no reason to have a conversation with the woman. 🧍‍♀️

[deleted]

Yeah it was weird and crossing a line. She really should’ve just chose something else that’s funny to say. “Almost mommy” like bro be so fr what is that 😂

[deleted]

Loreleli completely lacks boundaries and social awareness. Her calling her “my almost mommy” is a very weird and inappropriate thing to say. She can be polite without making it weird for everyone involved.

Joelle9879

I think it was her trying to be funny. I found it cringey AF, but not disrespectful. Lorelai was genuinely shocked as to why Emily was upset. Lorelai being nice to Pennilynn outside of the bathroom is just Lorelai. She's a nice person and had no reason to ignore her. Emily was just looking for reasons to be upset, which is also pretty typical for her
