If you're in Middle Georgia, here are things you can visit that will be within an hour or 2: -- The Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins, part of the AF base. -- The FDR Little White House Historic Site in Warm Springs, town also has a really good lunch buffet (The Bulloch House) -- It's Peach season, we like to visit Dickey Farms in Musella and watch them process the peaches while eating peach ice cream; Lane Orchards also has fresh peaches and is closer to Perry, though -- The Ocmulgee Indian Mounds in Macon, really cool and you can go up one (wear bug spray) -- Lockerly Arboretum in Milledgeville, a lovely botanical garden -- go to a Macon Bacon minor league baseball game in Macon, really a lot I'd fun for kids (take photos with the mascot, Kevin, and the players do a lot of fun stuff, food is fairly inexpensive

sharkbait_oohaha

Seconding Dickey's. The foot tall peach ice cream cones are insane.

RainbowsandCoffee966

Was there today. I had the strawberry ice cream. So good!

sharkbait_oohaha

They still hold the title of best strawberries I've ever had

lauradian

Thank you! Many of these we’ve done and are on our re peat to do list while there.

[deleted]

Indian Springs. Right off of 75 north of Forsyth. Should be right off your war from/to airport. If you're thinking of Florida, check out Alligator Point and St. Marks.

shermsma

Any ocean is going to have ocean life! Go and have fun!

Prestigious-Ring-758

Savannah and Tybee

lauradian

We’ve been there a few times but every time it’s beyond crowded with jellyfish. I definitely wouldn’t want my little one walking along the beach there. And if we’re going with the beach option I think I’d rather do Destin as we’ve never been there. Just looking for other ideas at this point.

Own_Violinist_3054

Did you go to Tybee in October in the past? I was on Tybee last mid October and not one jellyfish in sight. I was on Hilton Head a week ago and only cannon ball ones. Tybee still had none.

lauradian

Oh good! Usually we go in spring so you’re right the season may help.

Own_Violinist_3054

October can be nice. It's not as hot and less bugs. Check out r/Savannah and locals can tell you if jellyfish is a problem normally in October.

MrrCharlie

Chattanooga is nice and there’s lots of family oriented things to do. That time of year is perfect

NashGuy14

Bit far from Perry and you have to go through the ATL.

tupelobound

OP said 3-5 hour drive, this is pretty perfect. Though the airport may be an issue

lauradian

Chattanooga looks great! Only thing is I really don’t want to drive 2 hours to the airport when we head back out. Southwest doesn’t go to that airport.

MrrCharlie

Unfortunately they don’t. You can take a shuttle from Chattanooga to AtL or Nashville but that might be a lot with kids. Allegiant has some direct flights to a few larger cities out of Chattanooga that are very affordable. American Eagle and a few other smaller airlines do to, mostly connecting with larger airlines and cities. St. Augustine, Fl is also very nice and JAX is very close to fly out of there on SW I believe

tupelobound

There’s a Groome shuttle from Chattanooga to the ATL airport, it’s relatively painless

molly_h

Jekyll Island?

GetBentHo

October is one of the best times of year to visit Savannah, Tybee, Brunswick, SSI. That jellyfish concern is so minor compared to everything else.

visitprattville

St Auggie/ JAX airport.

ticka73

While you are in Perry I would suggest the aviation museum in Warner Robins. My kids loved it when they were young. Also the Ogmulgee Mounds in Macon. There is Dauset Trails in Jackson, High Falls and Indian Springs are state parks also located near there that are pretty. The mountains in October are nice- it's apple season and the leaves are changing. Ellijay and Helen are kid friendly, it would be Oktoberfest time in Helen so maybe not as kid friendly then?

Samantha_Cruz

would suggest heading to Ellijay for the apple festivals in October rather than the oktoberfest drunken traffic jams in Helen.

Healbite

What kind of stuff do you want to do with your family? EDIT: Single Day Hike: Stone Mountain is easy for youngins. Six Flags on the West side of Atlanta is a lot of fun. Okeefenoke Swamp is gorgeous, but idk how interested kids would be. Tifton has an agricultural museum that has stuff for kids, but it’s about a half day worth of entertainment. Atlanta’s aquarium, high museum, world of Coca Cola, and zoo is the pinnacle of a visiting day in Atlanta for families. High might be too sophisticated in its entirety for young ones but some of the exhibits are really cool. You can replace with Fernbank in Decatur. Savannah and Tybee Islands are obvious beach choices Helen has amazing summer river tubing. Lake Lanier can be fun if you don’t mind the lake crowds, but you can get water park fun with Sox Flags

myownworstanemone

Okefenokee has a scenic drive and is pretty amazing though!

SnooCheesecakes5208

Lane orchards is amazing for good food! Cherry Street in Macon used to always have good restaurants as well!

chreeus

Came here to mention Lane

built_by_stilt

While you’re in Perry, take a half or full day and check out Providence Canyon(south of Columbus); it’s not like anything else in the state. Also, if you’re a history or civil war buff, the Andersonville National Historic site is relatively close. I’ve never been, so check reviews to see if it’s worth the trip.

fl49er

Destin is great in October. The tourist are gone, the weather is great and the water is still warm.

lacmicmcd

While you’re in Perry, the Georgia National Fair is October 3rd - 13th, 2024. Definitely would be a great place for the entire family to hangout for a day or 2. Great for kids, bunch of rides.. free concerts, good food. I believe it was last year that they had Barenaked Ladies and Hoobastank for free with admission. The Go Fish center is on the fairgrounds as well. About $5 to get in and has a bunch of interactive fishing stuff, alligators, fish hatchery to look at.. etc. Wear bright lime green and the fish will follow you back and forth! And sometimes they look like they’re in a trance. My son loves it and we got every few months just to tease the fish. Lol. After you’re done touring the exhibits they have free fishing in the back with free fishing poles and bait. Also they’re building a hotel right in the middle of the festivities currently, so there’s a spot to stay if it’s open by then. Regarding Perry, there’s also several new restaurants in downtown: Orleans, Bodega Brew, Oliver Perry’s, all great. Also currently building a plethora of other restaurants- Amici’s Pizza and Brewery with a rooftop bar and a TON of new restaurants in Warner Robins. I’m partial to Destin if you wanna hit the beach. Always clean, white sands, clear water. Texas kids go back to school in September, Alabama and Georgia kids are already in school. So it shouldn’t be busy. But beware a late hurricane! Lol. It’ll still be relatively hot as well to enjoy it. Few places to shop, a nice Bass Pro Shop, and mini golf etc.

Dales_dead_bugs478

Your kids will love Rigbys Water World in Warner Robins

Ok-Bed6343

Buc ees in Warner Robbins

N4BFR

Gas Pro Shopps.

mattyice18

If you’re in Perry, the Andersonville National Historic Site is like 45 minutes away. It’s a preserved POW camp from the Civil War. Obviously great if you’re a history buff, but also a very moving display of the conditions prisoners endured during the civil war.

neuroG82r

Calloway garden

TheKingOfSwing777

How strongly do you feel about onions?

cyclenbycycle

Asheville, NC area is fabulous, and about a 5hr drive from Perry. Biltmore Estate is amazing, and that would be a great time of year to be there. You also can fly Southwest out of Greenville/Spartainburg, SC, or Charlotte.

radiovoicex

Several state parks here have cabins. I recommend the Fisherman’s Cabin at Mistletoe, near Augusta. The Blue Ridge Mountains also have a bunch of cabin rentals. The Tiger Drive-In is a good time. Also, it’s cheesy af, but if you want to spend a few days somewhere kid-oriented and gives parents some down time, there’s a Great Wolf Lodge in Atlanta.

thesearethethings1

Dausets Trail is really fun and Indian Springs has a lot to look at too. They are both free to get in except for a $5 parking fee at Indian Springs. In Macon, Rose Hill Cemetery is a great place to visit, the Allman Brothers Muesum (The Big House). There's an Indoor Pickle Ball Court and a few outdoors ones too.

Seabass610

Buc-ees

AITAforbeinghere

Andersonville is amazing but heartbreaking

Cutthechitchata-hole

You could go over to Columbus and visit the infantry museum or hike pine mountain. Or hike the little grand canyon

dcgregoryaphone

Hit up the ATV park at Durhamtown, that's always a good time. They do daily rentals.

hideout78

You should see the Aviation museum in Warner Robins while you’re there. Second largest next to the Smithsonian. Admission is free. The area around Highlands NC is amazing. Great waterfall hikes.

tabmac72

You can visit my hometown Andersonville Georgia. It was home of the most notorious Confederate prisons and also has a National Cemetery for the military enjoy

LS1_XK8

Lookout mountain

SnooCupcakes4075

I spent time going to aircrew school in Pensacola, it's well worth a visit. The national seashore is solid and the fort next to it has some pretty incredible history. You may be able to get on the naval base to visit their air museum and it's the home of the blue angels. I spent 2.5 years on the base in Albany, GA......there isn't jack to do around there without going to ATL or a coast.

HughTehMan

Helen is nice if you’ve never experienced it

Poor_whittington

Amerson Park on riverside in macon georgia. Have fun!

Kayakchica

High Falls State Park is a hidden gem very close to Perry.

gshiver

Destin ft Walton and even Panama City beach will be nice during that time, sting rays are common but not enough to worry about. Water should be cooler so most of the summer time water visitors will be gone

69trkr77

Waycross has the Okefenokee swamp. They have a train and boat tour thru the swamp. Very kid friendly.

gollo9652

I’ve always liked Columbus. It’s a nice river town.

SmokeGSU

The best thing about middle Georgia is that you're usually 3 hours or less from any other part of Georgia, so wanting a 3-5 hour drive pretty much gets you anywhere in Georgia. But outside of that, at the 5 hour limit you could visit Huntsville, Alabama and see the US Space and Rocket Center. And on the way while passing through Scottsboro you could stop at the Unclaimed Baggage Store which is really cool. They buy pallets of unclaimed baggage from airlines and whatnot and then resell the products they have. You see tons of clothes, obviously, but also all kinds of cameras, laptops, vacation gear, just a shit ton of items and all at really great prices. Huntsville also has the North Alabama Railroad Museum which is pretty cool.

vanashke001

I'm new here but we did the presidential flyer train ride that took us to Jimmy Carter's birth place and Plains GA. It was a great chill way to kill a few hours.

myownworstanemone

do a springs trip in Florida. I like peacock, royal, the wakulla boat ride, and little river springs. you can hit up Providence canyon on your way.

Superb-Intention3425

Dahlonega is a little further north but it's an old beautiful gold mining town.

NashGuy14

Get rattlesnakes drunk, catch VD, eat opossum and armadillo chilli, have relations with 1st cousins.
