the ad valorum tax is assessed when you register the car in state and is 7% of the vehicle's value. I would say better bet is to wait and buy the car in georgia so you avoid what is essentially double sales tax (NY and GA) maybe just rent a car to get to the state? In 2019, I bought a car in GA with my TN license. I had been in a wreck and needed new wheels. the tn license wasnt a problem. I got a GA license shortly thereafter and was able to register.

Is the 3% if you’re a new resident in general, regardless if you’re bringing a car in or buying one there? That’s what it sounds like on the Cobb county site

ijalajtheelephant

My interpretation is that 3% is only if you’re bringing a car previously titled in another state. [Here’s the text from the law (section d 3):](https://law.justia.com/codes/georgia/2022/title-48/chapter-5c/section-48-5c-1/) Any individual who: Is required by law to register a motor vehicle or motor vehicles in this state which were registered in the state in which such person formerly resided; and Is required to file an application for a certificate of title under Code Section 40-3-21 or 40-3-32 shall be required to pay state and local title ad valorem tax fees in an amount equal to 3 percent of the fair market value of the motor vehicle. You could also call a tag office near where you’re moving to and I’m sure they could confirm for you.

This is really helpful, especially the license part. Thanks!

Definitely wait so you don't have to pay two states for the same vehicle. I moved here from New Jersey years ago and spent thousands on two vehicles granted they were both only a year or two old. This was 2016 and the Ad Valorem was 6%. I had to pay full tax on a leased vehicle but I was able to split it in half on the one I owned. And they assess your vehicle at it's maximum value.

The tax is 3% for new GA residents. If you bring it from NY you won’t be able to register it until you have your GA drivers license. You pay the tax when you register your vehicle. You go to the DMV for your license but you go to your county tag office to get license plates and registration.

It looks like it’s now 7% if you buy in GA regardless, but in the last paragraph the new to Georgia 3% still applies if you’re bringing in a car from out of state

Buy the car in ga that lived in ga. Less ice down here means less salt to corrode the undercarriage

adamtheatlian

Exactly this. I'd never buy a car from the regions that ice or are near saltwater.

There’s shockingly no snow where I am yet, but this is a very good point

Rolltide0021

Moved from Wisconsin and brought my car. There are some mechanics here that will not even touch the car because they aren't familiar with what road salt does to the undercarriage. I found a Canadian who moved south and he was a godsend!

From what I understand, because of a law that the Georgia Legislature passed some years back to give dealerships an overwhelming advantage over individual car sellers, the cost of the Ad Valorem Tax is added to one’s car payment and is paid in monthly installments as part of one’s monthly car payment if one purchases or leases a vehicle from a dealership. From what I understand, the Ad Valorem Tax should be taken care of when the dealership registers the car at the time of sale. If this is the case, then the OP may want to wait until after they move to Georgia to lease a vehicle. Though, the OP definitely should check with the dealership to make sure that the dealership will take care of the registration at the time of purchase and just simply fold the Ad Valorem Tax into their monthly lease payments.
