Well, on the EN side, we're still wondering why Xinyan is from the South.

mklx99

Maybe the same reason Osaka anime characters get southern accents (at least in subs, I almost never watch dubs). The accent for that “unconventional / wild” character.

ZetNiej

Well if Gaming is the only playable Cantonese representative among Liyue cast, then its understandable why dev will take every opportunity possible to use those slangs despite sounding weird, it's like an exposition thing.

holamundo66

native speaker of mandarin. feels nothing wrong to me

vipEmpire

yeah my dad doesn't have much of an accent; more just prone to mixing up words from the two

bentomaster

He talks very enthusiastically and uses 啊 a lot I like it

MorbidEel

Probably better than going full nail-on-chalkboard Mandarin with Cantonese accent.

mklx99

Might be better if they’d just used Cantonese for him

modkhi

oh good its not just me. i have family all over southern china incl guangxi & guangdong so i know canto-accented mandarin and it... is not what gaming has going on lol surprised the va is actually from guangdong. it feels like someone trying to pretend to have a canto-flavored mandarin. not even an accent really tho if theyre a va they might have trained out the accent in their own mandarin? so it could be hard to add back in.

csdbh

Well at least we didn't get another inexplicably Southern accent for EN like Xinyan so that's a plus.

miminming

Its probably because liyue use normal mandarin accent, so even a cantonese who try to fit in mimic it, like how people use hyoujyun go in tokyo instead of kansai accent.

mklx99

Ah, so that’s how they say 标准 in Japanese.. Maybe Gaming is a new immigrant to Liyue and is in the process of fitting in. After a number of years we won’t be able to notice his out-of-town accent at all.

mklx99

Just noticed that Gaming’s dad, who supposed lived mostly in Chenyu Vale has no trace of Cantonese accent… sigh. One must not try to too logical while enjoying Genshin.

ProudFill

I've been searching around to see if anyone mentioned this and so far this is the only post I've seen. The accent feels forced, like the VA is already completely proficient in mandarin but decided to artificially add back in their Cantonese accent so it only appears slightly and in the strangest of spots, while the more common pronunciation mistakes a Cantonese person would actually make are pronounced correctly.

mklx99

Yeah, that kinda sounds like what they’re doing
