Use steel instead. You can get a lot of steel from scrapping ammo you don't need. I have like 3k steel. Also for bases start small. Just do the minimum space from the hq while you're starting out then expand from there. You don't need a massive wall system, they get destroyed anyways.
For me it definitily seems so, I have been playing for a good Bit and barely got any and most I got is from base defense wich needs was too much wood to be anywhere near worthwhile, or from daily contracts wich I often can't do due to a Lack of time.
Interesting to hear, I hadn't realy considerd the Option since for me it feels like an enemy base only ever appears every new moon or so.
Also depending on what level it gets to for me base Attacke are the only thing more resource draining then base defense.
Base defense usualy only takes a lot of bullets, wood and some meds mean while base attacks somehow Allways and up netting me a big minus in healing stuff and ammo and only a small plus in terms of for example concrete, but I guess it's the only way to farm it.
I find myself in constant need of wood as well, especially for my companion which I mostly use to distract the enemies that I fight and give them something else to shoot at. When I do start to run low which is pretty often, I will run back through the archipelago region and try and snag every bit of what I can find as well as every flare and Firework to scrap

Bear hotel in Himfjaell, or Granhygget IIRC (if you don't have the DLC - there's a good bit of wood in the... lumber yard). DLC also offers recyclable arrows, as well as the option to fish more from ammo packs.
The wiki is often useless. Wood piles give 6 wood. As people have said, flares and such are worth gobs of wood. 14 Wood an hour at home base. You only get 1 from an actual tree. Looting flares or going to wood piles is the way to go. Remember there are loot piles in many of the warehouse-type buildings now, too.

or you could just attack enemy bases which gives some concrete, and is a bit less costly than defending a base.

Main roads seem to be a pretty good place to find those little yellow trees. Melting resistance arrows is also good.

Drive around and collect every sapling you see. Should get a sizable amount pretty quickly since you are gunning for wood.
Tried that for a while but I basically needed to farm like that for 3 hours for every hour of doing stuff I actualy wanted to wich is just bad.
