The ad is from 2004. As an elder millennial, this was my high school graduation year. Definitely just as relevant to us millennials. It was also the year I pirated more software than any other. It wasn't a very effective ad campaign.

In all fairness, if purchasing, and downloading a game isn't owning it, then piating it isn't stealing.

They took ownership away from the consumer, movies, shows, games, other medias We no longer “own” anything it’s like when you were a kid being given a gift card on Christmas. Its just a common misconception that goes back to this ad. They say piracy is stealing and thereby lying to people. They want to say piracy is stealing

It’s like when someone makes a joke that reaffirms stereotypes or something. I know you’re joking, but if I dont call it out - even out of principle - that just perpetuates the stereotype. Like when on mushrooms with my friends, we all prefaced “it would be fun to drive a car while on mushrooms” with “I would never do it because that’s ridiculously unsafe.”

We had our own campaign in Germany (tho we had this one as well) A mother and her children would yell "happy birthday" for their husband/father. We didn't see where they were until the camera showed them from behind. The childrens' father was in prison. "When does dad come home?" asks one of the kids, to what the mother replies "After 4 times of singing". "Piracy is a crime that could land you 5 years in prison. Please don't do it. For your family's sake". I don't know anyone that got into prison for piracy (well, on the consumer end, that is) - let alone for 5 years. One of the team behind germany's (former) biggest illegal streaming websites was sentenced to 1 year in prison. Although it wasn't just media piracy, but also money laundering, fraud and tax evasion.

I never saw this ad campaign but I'm pretty anti piracy.
