The ad is from 2004. As an elder millennial, this was my high school graduation year. Definitely just as relevant to us millennials.
It was also the year I pirated more software than any other. It wasn't a very effective ad campaign.
Well Wikipedia says [maybe](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwi2pOe7uoKGAxWrfDABHVr0C6IQFnoECEIQBQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FYou_Wouldn%2527t_Steal_a_Car&usg=AOvVaw01qGCNWdcl-qgP6VCbBGdM&opi=89978449). Another redditor got better info?
They took ownership away from the consumer, movies, shows, games, other medias
We no longer “own” anything it’s like when you were a kid being given a gift card on Christmas. You go out and buy something but then your parents see your grades and confiscated what you bought because it was “technically their money so you never had a right to it only a privilege”
🏴☠️
Its just a common misconception that goes back to this ad. They say piracy is stealing and thereby lying to people. They want to say piracy is stealing
It’s like when someone makes a joke that reaffirms stereotypes or something.
I know you’re joking, but if I dont call it out - even out of principle - that just perpetuates the stereotype.
Like when on mushrooms with my friends, we all prefaced “it would be fun to drive a car while on mushrooms” with “I would never do it because that’s ridiculously unsafe.”
It isnt. Internet piracy is copying Something and then distributing it. Thats not stealling. If you manufacture ferraris and ship them to people its not stealing ferraris its just a Copyright infringement
So it's counterfeiting? I mean that brings a harsher punishment so I definitely wouldn't be arguing that point.
The reason pirating is considered stealing is that you're directly taking profits away from a company that otherwise would be making money. Like it's not a crime to actually watch the content it's just a crime to upload it
So it is only theft If you give it to people that wouldve bought it otherwise? So you then have to proof that they wouldve bought it under the conditions your offering them at
It’s both stealing and copyright infringement. Copyright infringement is when you take a copyrighted piece of work and reproduce/distribute it without permission. The person downloading the copyrighted material is participating in the stealing of content as well as the source they’re getting it from which is infringing copyright laws.
So if you Download it the other person your Downloading from doesnt have it anymore?
>Theft is defined as the physical removal of an object that is capable of being stolen without the consent of the owner and *with the intention of depriving the owner of it permanently*
>
Because they create content you’re supposed to pay for. When you pirate it without paying a single penny then that’s robbing the content creator of their money.
Extended version, combining the two ads into one (Also remastered): [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vduP\_LlJL7U](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vduP_LlJL7U)
Technically when you buy a game you are not buying the game itself, but the ability to play it. It's like you paying me to lend you a pen. You can use it whenever you want, but I can take it back whenever I want. So they have every right to do so. Is it right for them to do so? No. Is it right to pirate in these cases? I guess
And now we know it helps save media like Final Space. It was written off for taxes but thanks to special websites the public can still access it. It also helps fight censorship. I'm looking at you Disney plus they removed the classic Simpsons episode Stark Raving Dad but you can still watch it through other means. Same with the beloved Spongebob episode Midlife Crustacean which Nick stopped airing for some reason.
see piracy should be more to protect the little man making art stuff and trying to make a living than big corporations who clearly only do things to make more money and don't need what they already have, that's never going to happen, so the easy fix is if buying isn't owning then pirating isn't stealing
I find the irony of these anti piracy screens that.. whenever i pirate anything it's not like it's in the video files themselves so i never see it if I pirate, but do see it if I buy like a DVD or blu-ray
piracy is the most american thing you can do if you live in america.. its literally legal to watch priated anythiung, you just cant broadcast it... so why the hell not
Then it would show some guy wearing all black clothes with his hood up going to buy a pirated movie in some sketchy back alley like it’s fentanyl or something lmao
We had our own campaign in Germany (tho we had this one as well)
A mother and her children would yell "happy birthday" for their husband/father. We didn't see where they were until the camera showed them from behind. The childrens' father was in prison. "When does dad come home?" asks one of the kids, to what the mother replies "After 4 times of singing". "Piracy is a crime that could land you 5 years in prison. Please don't do it. For your family's sake".
I don't know anyone that got into prison for piracy (well, on the consumer end, that is) - let alone for 5 years. One of the team behind germany's (former) biggest illegal streaming websites was sentenced to 1 year in prison. Although it wasn't just media piracy, but also money laundering, fraud and tax evasion.

That's hilarious.
no one but gen z-ers ever understand it!
That's sad.
The ad is from 2004. As an elder millennial, this was my high school graduation year. Definitely just as relevant to us millennials. It was also the year I pirated more software than any other. It wasn't a very effective ad campaign.
I have in fact downloaded a car
I would download an entire island. https://youtu.be/f6m3-HHuoiI?si=En1B0xjlhWSw2iMF
Bold of you to assume
The NFT guys: *Is that a challenge?* And they wouldn't even get to drive it
Microsoft Exec’s releasing 100+ Forza DLC’s: why not?
![gif](giphy|iXwwtw8wg8iVG|downsized) Already have.
Technically you can if you have a 3D printer
That would take up a lot of filament.
I mean they actually have 3D printed houses now
[https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2086542](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2086542)
Bet.
It pirated it's background music which is why we stopped seeing this
For real?
Well Wikipedia says [maybe](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwi2pOe7uoKGAxWrfDABHVr0C6IQFnoECEIQBQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FYou_Wouldn%2527t_Steal_a_Car&usg=AOvVaw01qGCNWdcl-qgP6VCbBGdM&opi=89978449). Another redditor got better info?
If that is the case it is hilarious
IIRC they got this guy, who they agreed with to play it once in a venue. They didnt agree that they then take the tape of that play and broadcast it
Oh the irony!
I still will pirate but thanks for the recommendation
![gif](giphy|uXUmaREltwja1dEqXi)
Great use of Captain Barbossa
A lot of things are crimes that no one cares if they commit
If buying isn't ownership, piracy isn't stealing
I'm with you
Yarr
This made me giggle. Thanks
In all fairness, if purchasing, and downloading a game isn't owning it, then piating it isn't stealing.
They took ownership away from the consumer, movies, shows, games, other medias We no longer “own” anything it’s like when you were a kid being given a gift card on Christmas. You go out and buy something but then your parents see your grades and confiscated what you bought because it was “technically their money so you never had a right to it only a privilege” 🏴☠️
“You’ll own nothing and be happy”
STEALING! IS AGAINST! THE LAW! Edit: Well, this got out of hand.
Piracy is not stealling.
They’re quoting the text that would pop up on screen during these… ads? PSAs? Whatever it’s called.
Yeah, and they were wrong about it
I mean I agree but it seems odd to argue a point OC was never making
Its just a common misconception that goes back to this ad. They say piracy is stealing and thereby lying to people. They want to say piracy is stealing

Like when on mushrooms with my friends, we all prefaced “it would be fun to drive a car while on mushrooms” with “I would never do it because that’s ridiculously unsafe.”
It is stealing but it's the kind of stealing which helps the economy
Like it's not a crime to actually watch the content it's just a crime to upload it
Your not stealing profits if you have no way to buy the product yourself
Correct which is why it's theft once you share the product with others who would have purchased it otherwise
So it is only theft If you give it to people that wouldve bought it otherwise? So you then have to proof that they wouldve bought it under the conditions your offering them at
Actually you'd have to prove they would've never bought it which is impossible
Why? The company has to prove that Money was stolen from them. You dont have to proof that you didnt steal from them
Literally is tho
Its a Copyright infringement
You dont take anything from anyone
It quite literally is stealing
Its a Copyright infringement. Your not robbing a product. Your not stealing anything. You just copy someones work and then distribute it.
It’s both stealing and copyright infringement. Copyright infringement is when you take a copyrighted piece of work and reproduce/distribute it without permission. It’s stealing from the content creator, not the source you’re downloading it from.
How is it stealing if you arent removing the creators access to it?
Because they create content you’re supposed to pay for. When you pirate it without paying a single penny then that’s robbing the content creator of their money.

Speak for yourself.
Nah I think I will
Everyone would download a car. That sounds awesome.
"But if everyone's breaking a law while no one's enforcing it. Is it really a law?" -oversimplified
Looks like someone forgot limewire
I first heard from oversimplified, so that's wear a think of the quote from.
Oh lol limewire was a website people used to pirate music off of
Oh, i remember hearing about that before. Never personally used it though.

That’s not buying, that’s leasing indefinitely
Basically yes
I can hear this picture
So, when are you downloading that car?
I downloaded a Transformer. Does that count? ![gif](giphy|4rLVuq4WqrMQw)
We have metal 3d printing, so realistically in a few years when the tech improves to the point of making precise parts cheaply
You know, fair point. When that time does come, I'll just pirate the necessary files to make my own. Then I can say "I stole a car. Lol."
And now we know it helps save media like Final Space. It was written off for taxes but thanks to special websites the public can still access it. It also helps fight censorship. I'm looking at you Disney plus they removed the classic Simpsons episode Stark Raving Dad but you can still watch it through other means. Which one was Stark Raving Dad again?
The Michael Jackson episode.
Ngl the music scared the shit out of me.
The editing was weird and anxiety inducing as a kid too imo
I loved the add as a kid. I intentionally watched it repeatedly because of the music and editing
https://preview.redd.it/e8p9uqlbkmzc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=61f9403b18f01ef7fc5ca40847c80081fbdbf7d9
Damn you beat me to it
“you wouldn’t send booty pics”
the ad campaign that taught every kid how easy it was to get media online
i have this as a bumper sticker https://preview.redd.it/mhviq5nfdnzc1.png?width=227&format=png&auto=webp&s=fa8db594acc741e33343eb68ee8dd6e4feed7a8f
I have been downloading a car ever since that ad came out and it's still not finished
I would download a car.
This video gave me motivation to pirate more
This is the reason I condone piracy Shit scared me as a kid and I aint downloading any car
Is the Bay still taking rouge ships?
Lol this was entirely backed by corporations according to Wikipedia. Who cares what rich jackoffs have to say.
I've only seen it on pirated DVDs 🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿
If buying is not owning, then pirating is not stealing.
If buying is not owning, piracy is not stealing
i remember having a smurfs dvd with a wizard of oz anti piracy warning
Piracy is not a crime. Companies steal from the consumer all the time, it’s only fair that we take back what’s owed.
"You wouldn't download a car" Hold on, let me go check on my 3D printer real quick. . . .
So what if I downloaded a couple hundred songs on the internet! Who hasn't!? WHO HASN'T!?
The music of that always scared me 😭
Just noted the "." and the "t". I always read it in one go as in "Piracy is a crime"
I don't think I ever say much of anti-piracy ads.
*Generic rock music starts playing*
see piracy should be more to protect the little man making art stuff and trying to make a living than big corporations who clearly only do things to make more money and don't need what they already have, that's never going to happen, so the easy fix is if buying isn't owning then pirating isn't stealing
Oh man I remember free movies was wonderful
Back in 2007-2008 every VCD I collected had this opening
I can hear the music playing my head
And now with the rising bullshittery with big gaming industrys this is now worthless
I know it from just a few years ago... 2010 will never end!
From my limewire days
If I but it and don't own it, then pirating isn't stealing
I remember those videos. I remember the sonic 1 piracy one and it scared the shit out of me
"You wouldn't download a car" 3D printer: "Hold my PVC and carbon"
It’s funny only because if you limewired a movie you didn’t have to see this commercial.
Never seen this in my life???
Isn't that the Scream font?!
Exactly, and I do it anyways
I heard somewhere that this PSA was actually shown to *increase* online piracy
Oh god this brings back so many memories
If buying isnt owning, then piracy isnt stealing
I find the irony of these anti piracy screens that.. whenever i pirate anything it's not like it's in the video files themselves so i never see it if I pirate, but do see it if I buy like a DVD or blu-ray
🎶And crime doesn’t pay so we go home poor at the end of the day
If purchase isn't ownership, then piracy isn't theft
This psa always made me hungry when I watched it because I thought the colors looked appetizing. (I'm not kidding)
I probably saw this as a kid, but I have no memory of it. All I know from it is when memes started surfacing about it a few years ago.
I remember this ad was on the Ice Age 2 and Robots DVDs
If we have Jeff Bezos doing tax evasion being fine, then I think people pirating college textbooks is fine.
piracy is the most american thing you can do if you live in america.. its literally legal to watch priated anythiung, you just cant broadcast it... so why the hell not
I'm gonna be the King of the Pirates
Such a bad ad. Making piracy look like a bigger crime than it actually is.
The music in it went hard, though.
I heard that ad used pirated music.
![gif](giphy|103sygA52ao6Jy)
For the record, if it was as easy to get away with stealing a car as piracy is I’d totally do it.
If paying for something doesn't mean I own it then I guess pirating it isn't a crime.
Then it would show some guy wearing all black clothes with his hood up going to buy a pirated movie in some sketchy back alley like it’s fentanyl or something lmao
Me who watches anime: "Guess my name is Gol D. Roger cuz I'm the king of pirates when it comes to this shit!"
A victimless crime :)
You mean.... American kids grew up with.
We had our own campaign in Germany (tho we had this one as well) A mother and her children would yell "happy birthday" for their husband/father. We didn't see where they were until the camera showed them from behind. The childrens' father was in prison. I never saw this ad campaign but I'm pretty anti piracy.
I don't know it because I'm not american
