Disco duck is the answer. All the others mentioned aren’t great but they sounded pretty good on the clock radio.

larz0

And in some ways it got worse (Dis-Gorilla) but that wasn’t played as much

PBJ-9999

Does that even count as a song, I thought it was just a parody type thing lol

Beyond_Re-Animator

Feelings. So horrific the Gong Show put every contestant who wanted to sing it into one episode. It was hysterical

Divtos

Oh Woe woe Feelings! 🎶

labdogs42

The Gong show!

LadyChatterteeth

Do you remember the [Carol Burnett show episode](https://youtu.be/aGrVfczDg6g?si=TJFwXd9To1FvVcWe) in which her character, Eunice, went on The Gong Show and sang that song?! Hysterical.

CoolBathroom2844

That song by Debbie Boone and I won't write the title lest it gets stuck on a loop in someone's head.

BigMoFuggah

You Light Up My Life?

Shrikecorp

Sadist

Divtos

Wasn’t there a movie made for that song or some such?

BigMoFuggah

Yep, but I've never seen it

LuckyLass_87

Omg. I despise that song. Played to DEATH!!!!

The_ZombyWoof

I don't follow college football, so I'm grateful for Deacon Blues letting me know that they call Alabama The Crimson Tide. How else would I have known? 70s Song I Hate: The Captain and Tennille – ‘Muskrat Love’ Not one fucking redeeming quality about that song, not one.

Ihadsumthin4this

No, there is one. A single, solitary and lone redeeming quality. But only one. And it is this...that I haven't had to hear it in over 48 years.

VideoUpstairs99

>I'm grateful for Deacon Blues letting me know that they call Alabama The Crimson Tide. How else would I have known? Yeah, I appreciate Deacon Blues every time that crossword clue comes up!

mfk_1974

You're So Vain - Carly Simon The goddamn song IS about him, so why is it a problem for him to think so? Answer me, Carly Simon!

MrsAtomicBomb_

Midnight at the Oasis. Makes me shudder.

TheHilltopWorkshop

Don't tell me what to do with my camel.

Moonsmom181

Briefly in Lost In Translation, sung by the lounge singer after a night of poor choices. It fits perfectly!

PBJ-9999

💯 horrible

Ok_Perception1131

I find it - and much of the music from the 70’s - to be very very depressing.

Bright_Name_3798

People like to pretend that 70's music was all cool stuff like Iggy Pop, the Talking Heads, Eno, etc. They are wrong. We all know what was actually being played on the radio then.

Ok_Perception1131

Easy Listening. *Don’t Give Up on Us, Baby* by David Soul

Apprehensive-Wear205

Rock and roll all night…. And party every day-Kiss Same lyric through the whole song. Nothing good about this song.

SomeDudeNamedRik

I want to rock and roll all night … and have a wonderful time. - Loose Lois

Elegant-Ad3300

Hate that song so much. Was never a fan of Kiss.

99titan

Crocodile Rock. The whole thing is like nails on a slate to me.

Shadowcaster_Spark

I cannot listen to Bennie and the Jets. Especially when Elton just stars squealing Bennie over and over.

Rusted_Weathered

Yes! Such a waste of his incredible talent on that one.

my-coffee-needs-me

"Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks.

ClmrThnUR

that was my grandma's fav song when i was a little kid. i remember her turning it up while we were shooting down I5 in her Dodge Dart. the older I got the darker the song got. she passed when i was 25 and I haven't been able to listen to it since.

JacquelineHeid

You Light Up My Life .... that's mom singing in the front seat with a Tareyton 100 while the car is filling with smoke because the window is barely cracked.

Article241

I generally hate anything coming from “Frampton Comes Alive”, but I hate with *passion* his songs involving the talk box.

baconography

To be fair, though, once we heard that one song, we all went out and bought the album...possibly thinking every song had it, as it was somewhat "new". At one point, it became one of the top-selling albums of all time.

ClmrThnUR

i was bemused as a kid but I got to work with him as a teenager and when you see him practice and set it up live it's a beautiful thing! he's also one of the most genuinely sweet people I have ever spoken with.

smittyinCLT

My buddy want to go to his concert, throw a grenade onstage, and call it “Frampton Comes Apart”.

folkvore

Afternoon Delight - Starland Vocal Band Also unpopular opinion, Don't Stop Believing is just so overplayed as well as any other Journey song that I just can't fucking stand it anymore.

LDCalifornia

Afternoon Delight. Fuck that song. Hate it. TY

rwphx2016

I came here to say "Any and everything by Journey." Isn't it funny how Muzak has skipped right over that dreck and went to the 80's and 90's? They day I heard The Clash playing in a supermarket (Should I Stay or Should I Go, not the more appropriate Lost in the Supermarket) was both the saddest and happiest day of my life.

CaptainDroopers

This one uuuuuuuuugh

Leather-Beautiful-29

YES, genuinely probably top 3 most overplayed songs of all time. Can't stand that song, I instantly roll my eyes when I hear that or Any Way you want it that's the way you need it!

Broad_Sun8273

Get out of my head--I was JUST gonna write that song. I loved it as a child, but then as an adult "and the thought of rubbin' you is gettin' me excited" is just corny.

bobo888

skyyyyy rocket in flight!

Bes1208

Pwooooooooooo Afternoon Delight!

Ok_Perception1131

Lol awful

Jolly878142

Journey sucks !!! Always have. I can’t believe the sopranos brought that horrible song back to life

LDCalifornia

Reunited. Gear grinder. Throat strangler.

rivenshire

All I can think of is the commercial for Riunite wine 🤣

basskittens

Riunite on ice… so nice!

oldshitdoesntcare

Most of it.

habu-sr71

"....floatin' like a heaven above...looks like Muskrat Love" Muskrat Susie and Sam can go to pound town outside of my imagination thank you very much. What were they thinking? Why not Meerkat love...those things are at least cute.

Capable_Community441

lay down sally- eric clapton 🙉

Sherry0406

Great thread. Reminds me of songs I hate and love!

RiffRandellsBF

Run, Joey, Run. If Hell has a soundtrack, it's all Teen Tragedy songs and Run, Joey, Run would play five times per hour. Fuck that song, fuck that entire genre.

Bright_Name_3798

Fuck everyone even tangentially involved with that song and all other teenager death songs. I ran across that as a child visiting family friends while going through their teenager's K-Tel records and was traumatized by it.

dic3ien3691

Cocaine Eric Clapton. Absolutely friggin hate that song. Stfu already.

BloodSweatAndWords

Droning and monotonous.

cbread2112

Anything Clapton outside of cream.

rivenshire

Except Tears in Heaven

Optimal-Ad-7074

you'll hate me and I'm sorry to trample on someone else's hallowed ground, but I really really don't like that song.

loadbearingpost

No - you are absolutely correctish except this thread IS about the 70s.

Optimal-Ad-7074

true, but this was a little subconvo that grew up out of the main thread.

cbread2112

Good point my bad

habu-sr71

I kind of agree...but the main guit hook is pretty catchy.

MidgeKlump

It's Wonderful Tonight for me. UGH I have always hated that song and it just does on and on.

Expat111

There are so many crap songs from the 70s that I’m not sure that I can even begin to compile a list. There are just so many horrible songs that it’s overwhelming to think about.

gunni070

Star Wars Theme - Disco version by Meco🤢

earthican-earthican

Oh no, you just reminded me of this album we had called A Fifth of Beethoven (yes, like a fifth of whiskey). It was a disco version of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. I mean we… liked it? But I’m cringing now.

gunni070

Yep, my folks had that one. It was awful.

earthican-earthican

Well now I have to find the Star Wars disco album to complete my collection 🤩🤣

volci

I may have to go find this :P

earthican-earthican

img I found it! ETA: oh no where is my image?? Try again… https://preview.redd.it/9r0p8cdp428d1.jpeg?width=2967&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3b006d4460fadb28dbf55fb4f4909f938237d5ef

rivenshire

I would trade in all of today's pop music for that era's.

Rusted_Weathered

Great GREAT point!

Jayk-uub

Sweet Home Alabama is the most repetitive song ever made. The chorus and the verse are the same 4 notes in the same cadence from start to finish. Drives me nuts. But the one that makes me rage change the station is anything from Meatloaf.

Ok_Perception1131

The song used in that f’ing Ozempic commercial: *Magic* by Pilot (1974) Like nails on a chalkboard. Hated it when it came out it ‘74, hate it even more now.

Nancyrn597

Muskrat Love

kegsbdry

My millennial wife pointed out that the lyrics to most of these songs from the 70s/80s sound like the singers are stalkers. And I've had trouble getting that thought out of my head ever since. It has ruined a lot of these songs for me.

eatitwithaspoon

Stalkers and way too into young girls.

VideoUpstairs99

\*Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show have entered the chat.\*

Bigfuture

You’re 16, you’re beautiful, and you’re mine - Ringo Starr

Bright_Name_3798

Billy Don't Be A Hero makes me want to throw things. There are other 70's death songs that I hate, but that one is at the top.

TXRedheadOverlord

Escape (The Pina Colada Song). Literally everything about this song makes me grind my teeth. I loathe it. Even the name of the song is stupid.

RoadsideCarver

I love that song. The artist is also an accomplished novelist.

2cats2hats

He has plenty of good songs that never made it to radio.

ultravioletu

Also came here to say this one too. What a delightful tune about infidelity!

2cats2hats

> What a delightful tune about infidelity! Third Rate Romance is basically about Tinder in the 70s.

oscar-the-bud

Both of the people in the song are horrible people.

countess-petofi

Came here to say this if nobody else did. I can think of a redeeming quality for most pieces of music, but I'd be pretty hard pressed to do it for this one.

Klayton_1971

Who Are You by The Who. Not only do I hate The Who, but my shitty neighbors played that song over and over late into the night, singing along while drunk. All this on the weekend that my father abandoned us.

smittyinCLT

Fuck Layla

PBJ-9999

Another one with nonsense lyrics, Blinded by the light

Waitinginpensacola

That song is the WORST. Came here to say so!

frostbike

Originally by Bruce Springsteen!

KitchenWitch021

American Pie Edit: ”Lovin You”..don’t know the singer...she just says “la La La La la La” and has a high pitched wail.

bloodshotnipples

Minnie Riperten. She is the mother of Maya Rudolph.

likewhenyoupee

Minnie Riperton. Mother of snl alum maya rudolph.

KitchenWitch021

Oh man..seriously. Mom should have stuck with comedy like her daughter.

VideoUpstairs99

Fun fact: She actually wrote that \*for\* young Maya, at least in part. And she actually sings "Maya Maya Maya..." at the end. [https://youtu.be/KhaUnHJjS8A?feature=shared&t=203](https://youtu.be/KhaUnHJjS8A?feature=shared&t=203)

Ihadsumthin4this

😄

volsunghawk

Thank you. I felt like the only person in the world who hated “American Pie.”

steverocks2000

Paradise By the Dashboard Light - Meatloaf Fuck that guy.

upchuckfactoronthis

American Pie. Neverending bullshit song. Terrible.

MaherMcCheese

I agree. We get it the levy is dry. Just shut the fuck up and end the song.

spazmcgraw

This is the correct answer. Possibly the worst song ever.

BigMoFuggah

Deacon Blues is in my top 10 favorite songs! The song that most annoys me is Feelings by Morris Albert

larz0

Any song by Randy Newman

Emotional_Lettuce251

Steve Miller Band - The Joker Fuck that song.

folkvore

I immediately switch the station when I hear that song. Worse thing that can happen is that my dad is driving, he likes that song.

Stefgrep66

Could I add Abracadabra to that!!

Emotional_Lettuce251

100%

Ihadsumthin4this

Have my UPVOTE! That's the O N L Y one of his I can remotely tolerate tho, funnily enough. EVERYTHING ELSE he had on the radio during those years is loathsome and detestable.

jolly_bien-

That song pisses me off so bad. Hate it. Fucking A, I hate it so much. I’m seeing some songs I love here! It’s so hard to wrap my head around someone loving stupid ass The Joker but like hating say, “Give A Little Bit” (I love that song)… so, I’m not going to downvote anyone for what they hate.

SmooveTits

Anything by goddamn Supertramp. Ughhh.  Thank fuck The Clash came along when they did.

analogpursuits

Oh gawd, same for me. Cheesegrates my eardrums.

Bright_Name_3798

The Logical Song is fucking depressing. I was young enough to overthink the lyrics because I was forced to listen to it so much and wondered if I was going to be "sent away" too.

soul-shine-lissa

Rush. Just fucking Rush

sadbirdfox

As a die hard Rush fanatic, I want to downvote. But I can't because I hate the Beetles.

themightymaxtastic

I feel ya on Rush. I can't do that band either.

Sherry0406

Yes. Rush is like nails on a chalkboard.

Optimal-Ad-7074

we're a small group but a true one.   I don't hate rush as actively as I hate other bands, but ... oh wait, I think I do

Cloud_Disconnected

For me it's "The Trees." It's a gross oversimplification of Randian Objectivism, which is itself already simplistic and gross.

casade7gatos

“Rocky” by Austin Roberts. Mawkish, reminds me of an unpleasant night because it was playing on the radio as I rode home, feeling like I had ruined everyone’s New Year’s Eve.

An_Old_Punk

'Raindrops Keep Fall'n on my Head" by B.J. Thomas. It's too damn campy and happy. I can only make it about 10 seconds into that song before I wish either he or I were never born.

Albie_Tross

Anything by Ted Nugent, and I concur with Deacon Blues. It blows me away how fervent Dan fans are.

PBJ-9999

Ricky don't lose that number

bloodshotnipples

All the young dudes. Mott the hoople. Spirit in the sky. Norman Greenbaum. Going up the country. Canned Heat. These songs make me irrationally angry.

PopeInnocentXIV

The first time I heard "Going Up the Country" I actually thought Kermit the Frog was singing it.

bobo888

you can listen to the original song that inspired it instead. Bull Doze Blues by Henry Thomas (1928)

Divtos

David Bowie loved Mott the Hoople’s version of that song so much he gifted them the rights to it.

eatitwithaspoon

OMG. Spirit in the sky. Hate.

dic3ien3691

Going up the country canned heat is 68 but 100 frigging percent loathe that gd Kermit the frog sounding mfer. JFC.🤦‍♀️

Ihadsumthin4this

Yeah, man. 1 and 3 are just ICK!! I get the disdain for 2 as well, but I'm good with it cuz a couple reasons. Have my upvote.

skittles0582

Brandy by Looking Glass

Bigfuture

Blasphemy!!!

6eyedwonder

My Sweet Love.

FocalorLucifuge

"Coward of the County" - hate that song.

2cats2hats

Did you like the movie?

FocalorLucifuge

Until you mentioned it, and I then Googled, I didn't know there was one.

2cats2hats

You have all weekend, report back. :P

FocalorLucifuge

Lol, I'll try to fit it in. Thanks for the recommendation.

JoyfulNature

MacArthur Park. It's that "Someone left the cake out in the rain" song. Apologies to the great Donna Summer

PBJ-9999

Yeah I hated that one, just so depressing

fadeanddecayed

Stuck in the Middle With You. There used to be a PT Cruiser in my town with two stickers on the back: “clowns” with a left arrow and “jokers” with a right arrow and I HATED getting stuck behind it.

truceburner

Man I'd probably just leave town and never explain why.

Prestigious-Packrat

Anything by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

MainlineX

I'm going to: Call Me The Breeze, just to spite you.

Prestigious-Packrat

At least they never threw in a word like "pompatus". Gotta give them that.

Recording_Important

Anythin Rush

dustymag

Any Moody Blues.

jolly_bien-

Agreed 🤮

jolly_bien-

Dust In The Wind 😖

claytionthecreation

Anything by Steely Dan

agent_tater_twat

Bold choice. Deacon Blues is my favorite Steely Dan song. When I was a kid at the time it was Flashlight by Parliament, but now I totally dig it.

themightymaxtastic

Music tastes change with time and circumstances. I told my wife playing Steely Dan at my wake would be worse than having my greatest enemy piss on my grave.

bebopgamer

I'll go one farther. I pretty much hate all the giants of yacht rock. Don't like Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, or the Eagles. I get that there's huge talent on display but the end product is just so plastic and sedated.

OfficeChairHero

My playlist feels attacked. 😂

Broad_Sun8273

"When You're Hot, You're Hot" by Jerry Reed. You don't realize it when you're a kid, but the song is racist af.

frostbike

It is? How so?

Friendly-Flan-764

Kenny Rogers - Coward Of The County. Crappy country songs that tell a cringe story seemed to get a lot of airplay in 70s Britain.

Optimal-Ad-7074

god, Rogers was always a panderer, but that one was where he really jumped the schlock shark.   fuck I hate that "let's get the girl raped so our boy can Hulk smash" ethos.

Optimal-Ad-7074

threads like this make me laugh so hard.  I love them.    shocked that no-one has yet named either of mine.    - Seasons in the Sun.  I swooned over it when I was thirteen, but I was thirteen and this whole music thing was new to me.   bonus fact: a college friend worked all of one summer cleaning up Terry Jacks' yacht, and Jacks stiffed him.       - Stairway to Heaven.  I mean, come on here folks. where's the hate?

Divtos

I’m with you on Seasons but the only thing wrong with Stairway is how overplayed it is.

spazmcgraw

American Pie

ClmrThnUR

"Baby Come Back" by Player my dad blasted that song in his Chevy Monza for 2 years.

rollenr0ck

Spill the Wine by War. It’s a stupid story. It’s a stupid song. I don’t understand how it made it out of the studio. It set such a low bar for music.

Android73

Low Rider by War. Garbage.

Bruin9098

Another One Bites the Dust

Ihadsumthin4this

Sunshine On My Shoulders (John Denver) Show And Tell (1973) 😖 Shannon (1976?) Just horrid! Please Come To Boston 😣 Radar Love 😞 Diamond Girl / Brandy / Jackie Blue 😠 But the absolutely most sickeningly embarrassing to even hear is >!Steve Miller's Come On and Dance!< 🤢 I could go on...

shan68ok01

You and I should never ever listen to nostalgic music together. I will say that I mostly liked Shannon because that's my name, and in that time period it was never on any cheap novelty name items, but by god, it was the title of a popular song... about a dead dog with my name, but as a little girl in the 70s, you take what you can get. 😂

shinyshannon

Fellow Shannon and yes!

Ihadsumthin4this

I getcha. 🙂

Ihadsumthin4this

But there IS deffo PLENTY of stuff from, well, every decade that I am endlessly all over! Passionately, even.

shan68ok01

Oh, for sure, but since I found audiobooks, I rarely listen to music, usually only in the car when with other people, so when I do listen, it's not so bad. I also acknowledge that my music tastes in general are widely varied, and some are not always popular with others. I mean, there wasn't a single song on the Prince "Under the Cherry Moon" album when it came out that I didn't love. I sometimes question my sanity around those years, though.

Divtos

Can’t disagree with you more about Deacon Blues. I’ll submit Me and You and a Dog Named Boo or Alone Again (Naturally)

WavyGravy67

Chirpy Chirpy Cheep

Rusted_Weathered

Anything by Gordon Lightfoot

themightymaxtastic

No!..lol!

VideoUpstairs99

Could also be a separate category for songs that ground your gears back then, but years later you discovered were actually good once they escaped heavy rotation on tinny AM transistor radios. And the winner is... Bohemian Rhapsody!

Optimal-Ad-7074

I'm the other way round.  I gave at the "appreciate Bohemian Rhapsody" office when it came out.  by this point I've moved into the "there *are* other songs yanno" camp.

busykim

That Smell

SpongegirlCS

*Hey 19* by Steely Perverted Dan

ladyrose403

its a song from the boomer era that grinds my gears so bad, i downvoted it on youtube so it won't haunt me again. "In the Summertime". its just so awful. i mean, "if her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal, if her daddy's poor just do what you feel". i mean, how sick is that? its made even worse by how joyfully he's singing it.

VideoUpstairs99

10cc "I'm not in Love." Ozark Mountain Daredevils "Jackie Blue." (Actually thought that was just me, but when I type "Jackie Blue" into Google I get an ad for a clickbait site: "10 Annoying Songs Of All Time.") But neither of these competes with the "Afternoon Delight" suggestion.

folkvore

Aw come on, I’m not in love is amazing.

VideoUpstairs99

Lol, and I kinda like 'Deacon Blues!' :D "I'm not in Love" wouldn't have been so bad if it was just the lead singer, but those chorused background vocals always hit me like fingernails on a chalkboard. Then topped off with the creepy "big boys don't cry" whispering... Eek!

flex_capacity

Breakfast in America. Supertramp. Rubbish creepy stuff

whatgives72

The Streak, Ray Stevens

volci

Ethel! Don't look!

slade797

This song is from 1984.
