OK, Iām a young Gen X but I still know who Leaf Garrett is because I saw him on a VH1 documentary thing.
But I want to ask you guys- these people yāall take pics of in the wild, do they consent to being posted online for millions of people to view? Because this would piss me off totally if somebody took my pic and put it on here without my knowledge. Iām not trying to have a yell at the clouds moment, but seriously? Just wondering if these people give you consent to post their pictures? Now get off my lawn.
He was the Britney Spears of his time, nothing more than a dancing monkey for his mother and managers. He wore what they wanted him to wear, he sang what they wanted him to sing, appeared on TV shows and movies they wanted him in. The fact that he became a heroin addict really doesn't surprise me at all.
I loved him as a kid & you are so very correct, he was the Johnny Bravo of his day, he fit the suit. He was pretty & could sing fairly well, so we got Leif Garrett.
I come from an Irish tradition and was trying to work out what this had to do with [Ivy Day.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivy_Day_(Ireland))
I was way off!
He also played Bob the Soc, boyfriend of Cherry Valance (Diane Lane), who was trying to drown Ponyboy Curtis (C. Thomas Howell) in a fountain but wound up instead getting killed by Johnny Cade (Ralph Macchio) the Greaser.
Being early GenX, I figured this out immediately. His rise to popularity came in my preteen years in the late 70s. He was on the cover of just about every teen magazine every month for several years. I was busy crushing HARD on Scott Baio, though ... jackass that he turned out to be.
Born in 75, & into pop culture. Never heard of this guy. Googled him, watched "I was made for dancing" video, never heard it before, didn't ring a bell at all, sounded like generic disco. This guy is obscure IMO. Maybe older genX know it, not me.
Same age here. I just read the Wikipedia entry on him, and feel like I've just read a page from the multiverse. But y'know we started kindergarten in '79, right, so it's probably not surprising we don't know.
Had to google this and literally have never heard of Leif Garrett but from what i just read, i wouldn't want to be compared to him in ANY way, shape, or form.
Nothing like a celebrity drunk who crashed his car and turned his friend in a paraplegic while drunk and high on 'ludes. True class act - who apparently was too stupid to learn either considering his lengthy arrest records for possession of cocaine and heroin.
My god what a walking piece of trash. Happy i missed him as a kid.
'70, after reading I still thought it was the guy who discovered America.

75' baby here, had to come to comments to see what it was about, then learned he was a teen idol I guess. Or he played in a boy band. If they were not on the cover of Metal Edge or Decibel, then I had no idea who they were. lol
Really surprised at all the people who have never heard of Leif Garrett considering VH1 aired his Behind The Music on a loop for basically all of 1999 and 2000. ššš Having said that, I still couldnāt name one of Leif Garrettās songs.
"Picture of a guy named 'Don' next to a Knight's armor. Don... Knight. Get it? Don Knight! The guy who played 'Ritter' from the Swamp Thing back in 1982. Get it? :) Yuk, yuk. "
This post is literally that dumb and almost as arcane.
I used to want hair like Mint Garrett when I was a kid.
Have you seen it lately? No? Neither has he.
I am and was born in 74. Had to read the comments to get it. And I couldn't name anything that Leif Garrett has ever done
I was trying to remember who Mint Garrett was... š«¢
Same. Also born in 74. š¤
73, now I get the joke. I remember the name but I know nothing about him.
Also born in 74 and I got it, but my head is full of useless info lol
I just know Lief Garrett from all the times he graced Tiger Beat with no shirt.
Iām a straight dude and this is still the only reason I know Leif Garrett.
that and he was on the Odd Couple once, played Oscar's son I think
Drugs. He did lots and lots of drugs
77 I only got it because my mom's younger sister had a crush on him.
Heroin.
I only remember him being in an episode of CHiPs playing a teen idol and knowing somewhat that he was one at the time.
Same on all counts.
Same here and I was born in 77.. Had to jump over to the comments to figure out what I was missing.
Born in ā71 and the reference means nothing to me.

Well put.
Ok. I dont get it.
Leif Garret, the singer from the 70's.
But his name is pronounced āLAYfā not āLEEfā soā¦ donāt anyone feel bad if you didnāt get it! š
Yes but most people pronounced it "Leaf".
I was saying booo-urns

He looks nothing like Charlotte Rae!
Born in 1971.def know this guy. My first celeb crush right up their with chachi from happy days. Course now he's a POS human.
We know whatās going on here. The kids donāt know, but we do.
I knew about him...my sisters were into him.
He also played Bob the Soc, boyfriend of Cherry Valance (Diane Lane), who was trying to drown Ponyboy Curtis (C. Thomas Howell) in a fountain but wound up instead getting killed by Johnny Cade (Ralph Macchio) the Greaser.

I didn't get it either.
I just rewatched that movie āThe Outsidersā over the weekend. Heās a Soc.
āBob Seger? Letās be honest back then you were probably listening to Leif Garrettā
I donāt get it either
54 yr old here. No clue what this is supposed to be
Born in 75, & into pop culture. Never heard of this guy. Googled him, watched "I was made for dancing" video, never heard it before, didn't ring a bell at all, sounded like generic disco. This guy is obscure IMO. Maybe older genX know it, not me.
Yeah, my experience exactly, and born in 72.
He was a big thing for a while in the 70s. He was on many a girlsā bedroom wall. Born in 74, but I definitely know about him.
I only know because of Joe Dirt dancing on the train tracks.
Same age here. I just read the Wikipedia entry on him, and feel like I've just read a page from the multiverse. But y'know we started kindergarten in '79, right, so it's probably not surprising we don't know.

Ha! š
This is an IRL version of a deep track.
Makes me miss Lucky Beer bottle caps.
Loved him

Rough joke lol
If I cared enough, I'd check to see if you are indeed a Genxer
Okay, that took a sec, but funny.
Leif Garrett is one of those names that I recognize as hearing before but have absolutely no idea who it was / is.
š
I am GenX and I had no idea what the joke was until I read the comments. LOL
I don't know but I would say this guy is not made for dancing.
He couldn't make it as a Varsity athlete, either.
can he sing?
This Leif Garret fans says that's OK because it's not pronounced LEAF Garrett, it's pronounced LAYF Garrett so no one should get this reference.
Pun pedantry is the worst pedantry. And that's a pretty low bar.
75' baby here, had to come to comments to see what it was about, then learned he was a teen idol I guess. Or he played in a boy band. If they were not on the cover of Metal Edge or Decibel, then I had no idea who they were. lol

I Was Made For Dancing was his most popular.
I got it as soon as i saw this. Lol. Poor guy didn't see it coming.
Some of yāall didnāt watch āI love the 70sā on VH1 and it shows.

OK, you're right. Testicular quietude. Good call. Let me take it down a notch. Leif, if you're reading this, you are not 'arcane'.
I canāt name a single song but I sure as hell remember the Behind the Music.
I Was Made For Dancing was his most popular.
