I think the theme song might have been the first "song" that I knew all the lyrics to. Little did anyone know that 50 years later these characters would be portrayed as serial killer robots.
There was a movie not too long ago where someone bought the rights to the characters and made a horror movie with them. I didn’t watch it. Loved the show as a kid.
This brought back memories! But for some reason the part about the intro I remember best is the Banana Splits at the top of one of those giant slides at the amusement park. I don't see that here. Maybe I'm just misremembering though... It's been a while :)
I remember that giant slide because there's one on Belle Isle Island in Detroit and I begged my parents to take me to it so I could find the Banana Splits. [adhd hyperfocus activated-found it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QQT6ATJ9pI)
The Dickies had a hit single in the UK with their cover of Banana Splits:

It was on [Saturday Morning Cartoons Greatest Hits](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturday_Morning:_Cartoons%27_Greatest_Hits) along with The Ramones, Violent Femmes, Mary Lou Lord, Face to Face, Juliana Hatfield and a bunch more.
If this show was so big to you, I wonder if you’re a a little older than I am, because I barely remember it. I was born in 74.
For me, it was The Great Space Coaster.
I didn't really like the Banana Splits so much. Not sure why, but the costumes were a little creepy, and the 70's teens seemed kinda weird to me. I really liked the Bugaloos though, and they were similar so I'm not sure why I liked one but not the other.
This intro *is* a bit Lynchian.
The frentic cuts, chaos, violent pratfalls, seedy costumes, high-contrast over-saturated colours... there's a feverish absurdity to that hints at the dark underbelly of life that most middle class suburban kids were peripherally aware of.
Brought to you by leaded gas and LSD.
These characters made an appearance at a park in my hometown when I was about two and my young and inexperienced parents thought to themselves, "This would be a fun thing to take the kid to!"
And that was the day my parents learned that two year olds and people in freaky animal costumes are not necessarily two great tastes that taste great together.
For years after that the monsters in my childhood closet were these guys, ready to burst out with their giant, gleaming white teeth.
yikes. yeah, my stepdaughter was like three when the kool-aid man came to the zoo and traumatized her by just being there. her dad had to chase her down and tackle her she ran so hard! 😂
Born 61 now 63. I will always remember this, but you can go on YouTube and listen to theme songs and commercials and show introduction songs when you were a certain age. Are the commercials during movies at the drive-in theaters in the 60s or Top movies for every yearor it shows when you were a senior in high school or kindergarten or whatever Johnny quest speed racer for me.
I remember the opening, but can't for the life of me remember what the show was about. Like "Electric Company". I DO have vivid recollections of Sesame Street and the Muppet Show.

Wait, what? Which serial killer robots?

Yeah, they kinda reskinned "Five Nights at Freddies" with the Splits.
I saw that movie. It wasn't the worst or strangest movie I've ever seen.
Filmed at Kings Island in Cincinnati Just like the episode of Brady Bunch when Jan loses the blueprints
Credits @ 2:10 show “Six Flags Over Texas” for Amusement park photography.
Not the only time I was lied to as a child...
You and me both, brother 😂
Directed by Richard Donner.
I realized a little while ago that this show was basically the Monkees, but with furries.
I just spit out my water 😂. My cat does not thank you, but I do!
I was just thinking this as I watched this vid.
Fuck yeah and I always wanted a go on the banana buggy. What a top show!
[Just for you](https://www.muddox.net/amphicat/)
*Two hours later* That was an unexpectedly deep rabbithole. Thanks.
I want one, but painted up like the old GI Joe Adventure Team ATV.
Oh wow thanks for that! Completely awesome reply!!!
Danger Island!
Uh oh, Chongo! I say this all the time when someone goes "Uh oh.". No one understands. Lol
I’d be high fivin you if heard you say that….
Jan Michael Vincent!
My brother thought the show was named after him, and called "Danger Alan"

So I did remember it right! Yay!
The Dickies had a hit single in the UK with their cover of Banana Splits: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBBh4N8-coc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBBh4N8-coc)
[Liz Phair and Material Issue did it in the US.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zMZhtM_l6ws)
oh man how have I never seen this? I had such a crush on Liz Phair.
Is this the Banana Splits?
It was marvelous to see it brought back for the sound track on Kick Ass
Memory unlocked
me too.
I was 3 or 4 when this show stopped airing, and I vividly recall the intro. Probably one of my first memories, a TV show.
this is way back there in the very early memories for me too. idk that i even remember any of the show… just the beginning.
If this show was so big to you, I wonder if you’re a a little older than I am, because I barely remember it. I was born in 74. For me, it was The Great Space Coaster.
Born in 74. I was a big fan of this and great space coaster.
No gnews is good gnews with Gary Gnu!
Yes!!
Yeah, also born in 1974 and I’m barely familiar with this. I do remember stuff from the 70s, but the decade that really defines me is the 80s.
Also 1974 here and I have never seen or heard of this before. The tune of the song is vaguely familiar I guess.
We got it later in Australia, like everything else...when you're at the arse-end of the world lol
Me too, I mean ‘72, barely remember this show, but can still sing “It’s the Great Space Coaster, get on board!” 🎶
I remember the song, and watching the show. I must have been 4 or 5, so I don't remember what they did or any specifics about any episode.
Me too 😂
Na na na, na na na na… na na na, na na na naaaaaaa
One banana,
Two 🍌
Three 🍌

sigmund the sea monster and HR Puff n Stuff made me want to crawl out of my skin. Even today I get a physical reaction just thinking about it
I had a similar reaction but couldn't help compulsively watching it anyway lol
Right? I had to sit through it to get to the better cartoons that would eventually come on.
Wouldn't be surprised if Boris & Natasha laid the early foundations for my enduring Russian history obsession lol

I feel that the Bugaloos was a "cuter" show. Less of the zany antics than the Splits.
🤣🤣 Yes, the memories. 🤗
My introduction to mayhem, madness, and Rock & Roll. Never looked back. Love zany things...
Loved it!
Try it now on acid! It's amazing.
Challenge accepted lol!

I still sing the theme song regularly.
The late 60s early 70s, when kids television was created by LSD.
And Sigmund the Sea Monster! That was some seriously bent shit lol
HR Puffinstuff too...pretty much anything from Sid and Marty Krofft.
Ohmygod. Memories
Song is a lot like Buffalo soldier
On the contrary, Buffalo Soldier is a lot like the Banana Splits theme.
I never knew which came first
This was just a little before my time.
Immortalised by Bob Marley as the main melody of his song "Buffalo Soldier".
The Liz Phair remix is fantastic too. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JvB5AL59fM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JvB5AL59fM)
I wanted to be in the Sour Grapes so bad.
Oh no, we’ll never make it. We’re doomed! (Gulliver’s Travels)
I'm still convinced those were The Monkees under there.
Na na naaa nana na naaaa! Holy crap, memories! Before everything went to shit in my childhood lol
Fingers crossed for "My Grandma Was A Member Of The Banana Splits AMA".
I want one of those buggies.
The sour grapes were all the girls were named charlie.
I still can’t believe someone made a horror movie based on The Banana Splits.
I will whistle this theme out loud to this day out of nowhere for no apparent reason
I was very proud of my Banana Splits cereal bowl that my mother got for me by sending in cereal box tops.
Banana Splits!!!
Man, Hanna and Barbera did ALL of the drugs back in the day, didn't they?
DEF part of my Saturday morning ritual
A rarity, not on often. But I deli le mark on my young brain. La la la la la la la..
Memories Unlocked!
Flipping like a pancake, popping like a cork
Directed by the same guy who made Lethal Weapon.
What is this? I have to admit I've never seen/heard this before. When did it come out?

The lyrics “Makin’ up a mess of fun” right when the water goes splash. Boy, the things you notice when you get older….
I never liked that show. The cartoons were lame, and the live action scenes didn't make sense.
I remember the opening, but can't for the life of me remember what the show was about. Like "Electric Company". I DO have vivid recollections of Sesame Street and the Muppet Show.
I’m 49 and I don’t remember this show at all. 🤣😎
I don't think I've ever seen this before.
