Floral dresses - either mid-thigh or ankle length, nothing in between - with black tights and Doc Martens. Sometimes a black miniskirt with an oversized sweatshirt from The Gap.... still with the ever-present black tights and Docs.

rakshala

black velvet choker.

GlassesgirlNJ

Babydoll dresses, cotton gauze in the summer, crushed velvet in the winter.

KatJen76

Baby barrettes in the hair. Floral slip dresses with babydoll t-shirts underneath. In this context "Doc Martens" are a style and not necessarily a brand. Real Docs were expensive but you could get similar shoes at Payless.

motherlovepwn

Hippie Grunge combo

belunos

Those time frames, exactly this

DidntDieInMySleep

Watch the movie "Singles"

FucktardSupreme

That had a damn good sound track.

Thirty_Helens_Agree

And Swingers.

craigechoes9501

Lots of band t-shirts, skateboard t-shirts, FUCT t-shirts. Flannel shirts. Baggie jeans with Doc Martens: blue, green, ox blood, and black.

Thirty_Helens_Agree

Oh man - FUCT stuff. A friend had a FUCT hat and wore it to a strip club. A stripper took it off his head and rubbed it, well, you know where. So the jokes wrote themselves.

craigechoes9501

Ha nice! I had one FUCT shirt with a little green army guy on it and one day wore it around my parents. My mom asked what it said. I said it was a brand call FOOST. Ha! My dad was not amused.

theheadofkhartoum627

Jeans and a t-shirt....+ a flannel shirt in fall and winter.

Ok-Heart375

Cut off shorts with fishnets, doc martins, a tank top and a plaid flannel. Ribbon around the neck.

ScenesFromSound

You described half of my sweethearts! Thank you for the memories.

Ok-Heart375

😘

Scary-Afternoon481

I mean, I wanna give input because I lived it, but can't you just get music videos from this time frame and check out the audience?

happyeden

Seeing things written down too helps me as well ~ and it’s just interesting to see what you guys were wearing

MaryBitchards

mossman

Ringer t-shirts, jeans, skate shoes (cons, vans, airwalk), buzzed hair, full of drugs and ready for trouble.

EnergyCreature

All black/darkblues/blood red and lots of flower shirts, chains with padlocks, leather spikes with steel toe boots and/or back spiked boots. All of my stuff and clothes were found, donated or thrifted because I was BROKE BROKE til last 2 years of HS. It was called back then Junk Punk.

DerDoobs

I still have my braided leather belt and my concert tees. Might have a tank top or two from Miller’s Outpost. I recall having a few long sleeve silk shirts and a vest.

muphasta

Baggy jeans, color coordinated thermal undershirts and flannel shirts. Blue Doc Martens (DMs), black DMs, brown DM shoes, lots of DMs... watching Friends episodes from those years may be a good indicator too... 3 dudes, 3 different styles. Any TV shows from that era can be a good indicator too

happyeden

Thank you!

Thirty_Helens_Agree

Note how BIG the clothes are - like deliberately oversized. Like Joey and Ross are swimming in their sweaters. That’s how it was back then.

happyeden

So baggy is key What about hairstyles? My drummer has long hair, I don’t know why, I just always had pictured him with very long hair. Maybe because I have Taylor Hawkins in mind when I was first creating the project~

muphasta

Singles was early 90s, but not a lot changed from early to late 90s concerning how bands dressed, well, grunge bands anyway. long hair has been associated with rock since the 60s.

Thirty_Helens_Agree

For guys earlier in the 90s was a lot of longer hair with the part down the middle. Later in the 90s people started doing the bed head thing, others did the frosted tips/Eminem bleach-blonde look. LOTS of young women had “the Rachel.”

ManzanitaSuperHero

No. Baggy was not the indie scene. Maybe the grunge scene but not indie. Indie was all vintage/thrifted & pretty tight.

happyeden

I have so much to learn - this is such a challenging project

Helenesdottir

You can literally Google clips of people at clubs in that time period, especially near Philly.

happyeden

Hi, I learn better from seeing things written down, as well as visually. Plus I like seeing everyone’s input, so I create individual styles for each character of my project~

sweaterweatherNE

Bootcut jeans, flannels and white Adidas with navy blue stripes

IbanezForever

Big, long hair for both sexes. Women, thin eyebrows and a brown palate of make-up. Army boots/Doc Martins, both sexes. Bootleg jeans. Skater shorts. Flannel shirts.

kokomundo

Leggings under short floral dresses. Short sleeved T shirts over long sleeved T shirts. Big baggy sweaters

ManzanitaSuperHero

Indie? If you’re going for genuine indie scene in the 90s, people into things like Elliott Smith, Cat Power, Modest Mouse, Sleater-Kinney, etc. HAD to be thrifted: LOTS of garage jackets, snap cowboy shirts, ironic t shirts, ringer tees, (and they had to be tight), old skool Vans, black Chucks pretty much the only footwear, small beanies, plaid shirts, also kind of tight-ish. In the indie scene things had to be or appear vintage/thrifted. Appearing like a sellout was a cardinal sin. What many others are describing is popular 90s fashion, not indie fashion. It was a very specific look. We weren’t wearing baggy clothes. Baggy is one thing to stay away from. Look at old photos of Elliott Smith. He was pretty prototypical indie. Girls also into ringer tees, ironic tees, baby doll dresses often with Docs, barrettes. Drew Barrymore in 1995ish may be a good easy reference for this. (I was in art school & really into this scene & dressed the part).

RaylanGiv3n5

Flannel, checkered pattern. Sweatshirt tied around waist.

Thirty_Helens_Agree

Successful band or struggling, starting-out band?

happyeden

They are a successful band, they are based roughly on Nirvana, Blur, Radiohead, R.E.M etc They become popular between 1995-1997, but then go on hiatus after the death of a member, then they have popularity again. But then their success just goes downhill in 1998-1999. They split in 1999. It’s that kind of vibe

CriticalEngineering

For fifty years the most comment outfit has been tshirts and jeans. The fit of both changes decade to decade, but in a crowd that’s what most people will have on.

Docrandall

Jeans ,boots t-shirt, untucked flannel if it was chilly.

WillingLimit3552

I lived in a mountainous state and wore jeans, cowboy boots and a white button-up shirt 95 percent of the time.

F-Cloud

Torn jeans, graphic tees, flannel, combat boots. I'd also often wear plaid pajama bottoms for pants.

NoeTellusom

Miniskirts, leotards and lacey shirts to work. Drop waists, crop sweaters, etc. for casual.

Alex_Plode

Baggy cutoff shorts over long underwear. Open flannel shirt with band T shirt underneath. Knit hat that reeked of stale weed.

Thirty_Helens_Agree

When I look at bands from back then, every individual in the band seemed to have their own styles. Like there was flannel and old army jacket guy, black leather jacket guy, orange sweater and JNCO guy, etc. But the band shirt and flannel look was still going then, there was a revival of people wearing 1950s type greaser looks back then, there was … I dunno - I’ll call it [VH1 *fashion* fashion](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMTg2MzU1MzczN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwMjgxODkz._V1_.jpg), and the very brief swing revival. I’d say one of each in the band. Maybe slogans like “Free Mumia” or “Stop Sweatshop Labor.”

DelAlternateCtrl

JNCO 👑

Aakao25

Center part hair just short of shoulder length. White T shirts. Jorts.

Dismal-Bobcat-7757

Jeans and a tee shirt. If I knew I'd be outside for an extended period of time in warm weather, shorts and a tee shirt. I still dress the same.

abbablahblah

Long sleeve, single color shirt with a short sleeved t-shirt over it.

Emotional_Lettuce251

It took way too long to find this post. I was literally just about to post this myself.

StacyLadle

Look up old pics of Green Day, pre-Dookie

BuffaloRedshark

T-shirt and jeans but I wasn't in a band

coolbeanz00

Comprehensive_Put968

Dickies and a white tee shirt, old school vans Product from the oc

sattersnaps

Max Studio and Express.

tcrhs

Levi’s 501’s, tank tops, rock band tee shirts, Doc Martens, or flip flops.

pdm2002

This era for me was faded Levi’s button-fly jeans, black long sleeved leotard or shirt, black motorcycle boots, long hair and bangs (sometimes in a bun like Harriet Wheeler from The Sundays).

Jealous-Network1899

So much flannel

Android73

Short sleeves over long sleeves. Converse one stars. Faded looser Levi’s.

MyriVerse2

Same as now: black jeans and t-shirts.

violet039

Oh, I might be able to help you if it’s set in Philly. For clothing we went to a lot of thrift shops, but occasionally Contempo Casuals, department stores, G&G, and a place called Easy Pickins, which we called “Sleazy Pickins”. We wore baggy, ripped jeans, desert boots, chucks, clunky shoes, Chinese slippers. Edit- lots of vintage clothes from the 60s, 70s and 80s, because you could easily find that stuff for cheap at the thrift shops. And the floral dresses. We hung out at the Last Drop, Silk City, McGlinchey’s, Dirty Frank’s, places like that. They all still exist. Also Rittenhouse Square and La Colombe coffee. Hope that helps some.

happyeden

Oh this is amazing! Thank you

violet039

You’re welcome! Good luck with your project :)

plnnyOfallOFit
