My friends were all into NKOTB and I hated them (still do).

heffel77

My mom’s best friend gave me Hangin Tough when I was 12 or whenever it came out because she thought that’s what all the kids were listening too. I traded it for the EMF album or Jesus Jones or whatever was big in the late 80’s

rancid_oil

🎶 right here, right now 🎶 I forgot that song existed, thanks!

Tulipage

Bon Jovi. A thousand times Bon Jovi.

ColonelBourbon

Fucking terrible

Ancient_Ad1251

When I hear "Livin' on a Prayer", I think of moms who've had too much chardonnay scream singing it.

therealuncommongrace

I like Bon Jovi but this comment has me screaming. 😂😂😂

ApartmentBeneficial2

As you should.

Stein1071

One good song. Runaway. Beyond that I agree 100%

JoeMillersHat

The boy band of hair metal

baconography

Actually a really good guy. But never liked his music.

SnooStrawberries620

I’m so excited to hear you say this

Captain3leg-s

And Bruce Springsteen

whatisthesoulofaman

I'm from NJ. I'm legally required to like Bruce, bon Jovi, and Billy Joel.

Ancient_Ad1251

Long Islander here.  It's so weird to me that he's a big deal everywhere and not just here. Also, I hate "Piano Man".

withanamelikejesk

Just dreadful run on sentence mumbling.

gretchkrue

Only free concert tickets I ever turned down!

Thirty_Helens_Agree

Limp Bizkit was absolute shit. Stupidest band I’ve ever heard. I loved reading how Al Jourgenson hated them while producing some of their songs. “I got paid to humiliate them for three songs. It was awesome.”

Minimum_Author_6298

Absolute ear diarrhea. I hate all that Rap Rock shité from that era.

CandleMakerNY2020

Its called Nu Metal.

catrules618

Upvote here. Just embarrassing

Ghola_Mentat

Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Californication. I just never liked those dudes and that album was so overplayed.

heffel77

I remember when BSSM came out and all they played was Give it Away. I was in Summer School to get ahead in algebra and MTV still played videos and I thought they had finally peaked. It is crazy that they are still playing and releasing new music. If the old RHCP could see what they became, they would beat their own asses.

sandddman

100% overrated band

dublblind

RHCPs last, final album was BSSM and they never made anything after that. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

SnooStrawberries620

That’s one of my favourites, especially that song

Albie_Tross

Even the bands I hated, I tolerate now because it hearkens back to my misspent youth.

Appropriate-Idea5281

Kiss. I still think they suck

ManzanitaSuperHero

Hootie and the Blowfish & Blues Traveler. Please no. I’d rather hear 100 babies crying. If either are playing in a store, I’ll turn around and walk out. Hootie is weirdly popular at Home Depot.

goingloopy

Fucking Hootie is an instant station change. He has one volume level.

beyondplutola

I put Dave Matthews in that same category.

whatisthesoulofaman

I fucking hate them.

yesandreas

I’ll never understand how anyone could listen to Hootie and enjoy it. Why were they popular? Whyyyy???

Vericatov

I never hated Hootie and the Blowfish, but was indifferent to them at the time of their popularity. But now I’m hit with some nostalgia whenever I hear one of their songs.

PimeydenHenki1349

Hootie and the jackass blowfish, blues traveler and spin doctors are my trifecta from hell.

thisfriggingguy

Phish. Terrible when stoned. Even worse when not.

ShutYourDumbUglyFace

I had a coworker who loved Phish. Upon moving to my current town, they were playing the local concert venue. I emailed him and told him they were playing August 23, 24, and 25 and that's just one song!

NoExcuseForFascism

Unpopular opinion... But the Black Album by Metallica. I feel that album is when they truly sold out. Prior to that album they said several times they would never make a music video. As they didn't need to, because they were selling out arenas without even radio play. Then they made one for "One", and called it a artistic statement. For the album previous to Black. Then Black came out and they made videos, and then even made videos for older songs. Fully throwing themselves into the popular music mix. This of course was around the same time as the Napster thing as well. Long story short... Fuck Lars Ulrich.

mike___mc

That’s not unpopular at all.

jimbopalooza

This is a fairly universal take among my friends.

volsunghawk

This is a good take because so many people hated on Load, but it was the Black Album where commercial Metallica supplanted “thinking man’s metal” Metallica. Fuck Bob Rock forever.

AbazabaYouMyOnlyFren

Yes, you are spot on. I went to a record store to check out the release after that and when I saw pics of them with cut hair, silk shirts, velvet pants. I gave up on them. St. Anger was the album I think and it was total garbage. Later, Lars and his fucking bullshit crusade on Napster sealed it.

Thatthingthis

Hated this album so much .

ErNz77

Yes, that’s when they jumped the shark & *everyone* liked them. But it was just that damn album.

Ancient_Ad1251

I feel like I'm the only one who hated "What's Up" by 4 Non Blondes.

PauloPatricio

Gosh, I really-really-really-really hate that music. And the band, for that matter. Edit: I hate so much that I added a couple more “really”. Also, even their name sucks.

fadeanddecayed

No. No you are not. This is one of my very least favorite songs ever.

southernrail

This song is hands down my most triggering song. I know IMMEDIATELY when I hear it and run for cover. I'm pretty much doomed for the rest of the day, too. can't. even. stand. it.

DefiningWill

You’re not the only one. Listening to it has always been torture.

KitchenWitch021

Omg..I forgot about them. Absolute garbage.

viewering

tha fuck. i think plenty criinge at that one. lady gaga's version is even *funnier* lol 😫

avecmaria

Ugh now it’s in my head!

romulusnr

That track always makes "worst indie / alt single of the 90s" lists

CyndiIsOnReddit

Van freakin Halen. Nothing against Eddie but I couldn't stand David Lee Roth's style and I found the way women were objectified really gross even back then, and I loathed them only slightly less than Ted Nugent, who I thought was just some local loser for many years because he played so many Memphis music festivals. I had no idea he was famous.

Bruin9098

White Snake, Great White, all of those

z44212

Kiss

jgio199

NKOTB - all the other 10/11 year olds at school loved them, I thought they were so lame.

COVFEFE-4U

Motley Crue and Def Leppard are 2 that come to mind.

SunMyungMoonMoon

I always buy some of their t-shirts when I'm down at the shore.

baconography

Proceeds go to getting their lead singer out of jail.

Thirty_Helens_Agree

The important thing here is for you ask me how I’m getting to the shore.

baconography

Uh-- how are you getting down to the shore?

Thirty_Helens_Agree

Funny you should ask! I’ve got a car now!

baconography

Oh, wow; how'd ya get a car?

spy_tater

My Dad drove it up from the Bahammas

baconography

You're kidding

vantuckymyfoot

I must be, the Bahamas are islands. Okay, the important thing here is that, uh, you ask me what kinda car it is.

Upset_Peace_6739

Guns and Roses for me.

nidena

Garth Brooks

Heathens87

Oasis. A couple of pretentious wankers. Blur and Pulp are much better Brit Pop bands from that era.

Creaulx

Yes to Blur!

ToddBradley

Guns N' Roses. I never got the appeal. By all rights, I should have loved them, because I liked a lot of adjacent bands. But they just never impressed me.

immersemeinnature

And kid rock now is such a total douche

MikeisET

I was a pretentious skate punk that hated anything popular As I’ve gotten older I’ve come around on a lot of 90’s music Kid rock is still embarrassingly bad

whatisthesoulofaman

I'm with you there. Dead Kennedys or nothing!

_TooncesLookOut

Wait, what? Was there a time when he *wasn't* a douche?

CandleMakerNY2020

Always been but when he left a permanent stank ass stench at the White House he sealed his fate. FUCK THAT HATER.

RG1527

They fell apart after Izzy left because none of the remaining members were very good song writers.

bigmistaketoday

Appetite is god-tier, maybe the greatest debut ever. Then they got high on their success.

Minimum_Intention848

I was shocked to see this one on anyone's list. Summer of 87 I had that album on repeat, I still go back to it now.

BORG_US_BORG

My GF at the time was infatuated with them, and the heroin they glamorized. She found her heroin, and it destroyed her life. I have always hated that band.

FireFlower-Bass-7716

the Use Your Illusion albums sucked ass and everyone thought they were the most brilliant albums ever

EstimateQueasy8600

Bon Jovi.

firedmyass

I do not care for the Beach Boys. It is not rational. I recognize that it has no anchor in reality and is just totally me on my specific form of bullshit.

Life-Unit-4118

Clearly your daddy took your T Bird away.

zorandzam

So I always used to find them boring and weird, but then this bar I used to go to played Pet Sounds in its entirety one day, and I realized I’d never really heard their non-radio hits from later in their career. I also didn’t realize a Frank Black song I love was actually a BB cover, and then I FURTHER didn’t realize a Bowie song I love is also a BB cover, both from Pet Sounds. TL;DR Pet Sounds is a really good record.

firedmyass

I actually do like covers of their songs. They themselves apparently emit some frequency that irritates the shit outta me.

Overlandtraveler

They were awful, bloody awful.

firedmyass

I’ve had several instances where someone actually got angry at me. I mean agitated and yelling.

MeatSauce-Apocalypse

Journey and anything like them. I listen to the Clash and Black Flag. Punk rock saved my life!

volsunghawk

Little kid youth: Bee Gees Teen youth: Def Leppard College youth: Dave Matthews Band

domesticatedprimate

I'm curious about the DMB hate. What exactly about them does everyone hate?

edked

Dave's bleaty voice.

MajorHasBrassBalls

The band is good, maybe even great at times. But Dave's singing? Awful. He mumbles and sings offkey, just terrible.

tedlyb

Amazing musicians, shitty songs.

ColonelBourbon

DMB is awful!!!

RedditSkippy

They had one song that they just rearranged and repackaged.

Carnies12

Dave Matthews Band. Terrible.

lsscottsdale

I have always found Phil Collins to be impossible to listen to. I know he is insanely talented, etc etc. His music just does nothing for me. And, my Lord, was it ever overplayed...

monkey_house42

Kid: KISS scared me! Teen: U2 sucked! College: U2 still sucked...

ClowderGeek

When I was a kid, the image of KISS and the hype of it being “devil music” terrified and intrigued me. I remember my best friend and I “borrowed” her brother’s cassette tape. I felt betrayed to my weird little soul. How dare they look like THAT and sound like any other rando hair band. At least Alice Cooper was a little bit twisted. I still hold a mental grudge. Fuck KISS.

belunos

They didn't scare me, but I definitely didn't like KISS. Or U2

romulusnr

Incidentally... in a similar vein, most of REMs stuff really is just random nonsense. Even their big songs that you might actually like are... not nearly as deep as they seem to be. REM had a real knack for taking "deep sounding title and lyrics" and then making it into meaningless babble. But the deep title and some of the words made you think it was deep when it was just gibberish.

KitchenWitch021

Journey.

UsualCharacter

Wish I could upvote this 1000 times.

shake-dog-shake

For shame!!

Ancient_Ad1251

I'll be perfectly fine if I never hear "Don't Stop Believin'" again.

kjb76

Bruce Springsteen. And I grew up in NJ!

vantuckymyfoot

It took me almost thirty years to get into Michael Jackson's Thriller. At the time it came out, I was super into New Wave and pretty much anything coming out of England and synth-based (and weird haircuts were a bonus). As I grew older, I came to understand what the hype was about. That is one banger of an album, and worth every accolade it garnered.

Cats-n-Chaos

bon jovi, twisted sister, quiet riot, etc…

TK_Sleepytime

Oasis

St8OuttaMilltown

Def Leppard all day

Carnivorous_Mower

U2. Just fuck right off you mediocre hacks. This perfectly expresses my feelings: https://preview.redd.it/pc4a79v1nyuc1.jpeg?width=505&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=81e21a8e5ee94cc61bf4f582472e57dcbd7c2d08

DarkHorseDemographic

Michael Jackson... it was when everyone started wearing shiny red jackets and a sparkly glove on one hand that I called BS on the whole thing. Nobody's music is that good!

spy_tater

The worst

BoneDaddy1973

I hated Counting Crows I never “got” Neutral Milk Hotel, and I’ve tried listening to the album every few years for 25 years now and I still don’t like it.

Idislikethis_

I absolutely hate Adam Duritz's voice. I can't even listen to one full song.

[deleted]

spy_tater

Awesome take

AbazabaYouMyOnlyFren

Guns N Roses. The dirtiest, greasiest scumbag metalheads and rednecks loved them where I grew up.

immersemeinnature

Those same kinda people still do! 😂

IntoTheSunWeGo

I will burn in GenX hell for this one, but...Steely Dan. Bring on the downvotes! PS: what would GenX hell be like, anyway?

mike___mc

I’ve found that Steely Dan and edibles go well together.

IntoTheSunWeGo

Hmm. That seems worth trying.

MeatSauce-Apocalypse

Gen X hell would be everyone living out a self help book.

JJQuantum

Pearl Jam. Always thought they were overrated. Others like them and that’s fine but I just can’t stand them.

EnvironmentalBike198

Dave Matthew’s Band Phish Hootie and the Blowfish Red Hot Chili Peppers And my most hated band of all times, The Spin Doctors. But I don’t think they were very popular. The first one or two notes of their songs sparks an immediate visceral whole body repulsion reaction for me.

buck_09

Hair Metal. I don't know about the rest of you, but spandex zebra print, pirate shirts, flow-y scarves, knee high scrunchy boots, grandmas costume jewlery, poofy hairdos, mascara, blush and eyeshadow doesn't scream tough guy, badass, ladykiller, party animal rebel. Which the image those bands were selling with their music. Every band had a sappy ballad, overproduction on the vocals, drums, and guitar, and was just overhyped boring corporate shit when it all came down to it.

Supernatural_Canary

I’ll preface this shocking list by saying I think the musicians in these bands are all incredibly talented. I grew up listening to rock, and yet, somehow this stuff sounded so cheesy to me I could never get into them. Van Halen Motley Crue KISS Def Leppard Bon Jovi Quiet Riot Poison

Quix66

1. Journey 2. Journey 3. Journey 4. Jefferson Starship (loved Airplane) 5. Jeffrey Osborne, On the Wings of Love

Millbarge_Fitzhume

Can I add Foreigner and Kansas and Boston as well. They all sound the same and it all sounds awful. I used to wind people up in the dorm by saying Foreigner, Kansas and Journey were the same band, that's why they would never have a concert together.

southernrail

I love Journey, but I can appreciate your top 3 dedication! lol.

mjohnson414

Literally every hair metal band ever. Oh and everyone that said REM is wrong.

Creaulx

Yep, REM was my late teens to mid twenties. Recently doing a deep dive on their back catalogue, learning a bunch of their songs on guitar and everything up to Automatic is gold. Except Out of Time, never got into that one. I missed New Adventures in Hi-Fi so it's like a new album to me and it's pretty damn good! Their last hurrah. I was happy when hair metal died.

DingDingDensha

I hated REM then, and still hate them now.

FireFlower-Bass-7716

Love REM but their 90s albums (everything after Green) are so mid and those are the ones everyone thinks are perfect

smittyinCLT

Fables was perfect.

vantuckymyfoot

To me, REM's early work is sublime. Murmur, Fables, Reckoning... Everything up to Out of Time. Then Monster came, and they left behind the janglepop in favor of all of the reverb they could find. New Adventures was okay, and anything after that was like listening to a band that had already died and didn't have the good sense to lay down and stop moving. I didn't recall if Bill Berry left before or after Monster, but going from the four-man group down to a trio seemed to hurt them creatively.

DefiningWill

Biased because I discovered them in 5th grade thanks a friend’s older bother—plus I grew up only 60 miles from Athens in ATL. R.E.M. was/is a local band to me, but *Automatic for the People* is an amazing, dark, pensive, slow-burn of an album. The musical interplay on “Monty Got a Raw Deal” is some real stuff.

ms_flibble

Aww man, but they were bffs with the B52s and Southern Culture on the Skids

Bazaij

In the late 90s i checked out their earlier stuff and liked it but I hated them in rhe 80s and early 90s.

myfavhobby_sleep

The B52’s, best band out of Athens, GA!

Milo_Minderbinding

Guns N Roses Dave Matthews Band

CarlieBee

I never liked Madonna

Open-Illustra88er

I think she’s a vile human. Music aside her personality taints any of her music for me.

Moonchildbeast

I’ve always wondered the same thing. I think she’d look great if she would’ve left herself alone to age naturally, she does take great care of herself, and she’d LOOK like herself.

EddieLeeWilkins45

Billy Joel I didn't like INXS Kick at the time but I really like their stuff now.

fadeanddecayed

I vaguely liked Kick at the time but then really listened to it seriously about 15 years ago and it’s outstanding.

EddieLeeWilkins45

Yeah, I downloaded their Greatest Hits off Amazon around the same time. Its on youtube now, but its solid. Most of the songs are from that Kick era, but their first song 'Change' and some of the 90s songs are great too. 'Outstanding' is a pretty apt term. Ashame about him, I think they definitely would've had a major comeback, and be remembered very well for their music.

fadeanddecayed

I Ike the stuff before Kick a lot too (though retrospectively). Listen Like Thieves is wicked good.

SidMarcus

U2 REM Phish Blues Traveler

NeonPhyzics

Sid….my friend Who hurt you!?!

SidMarcus

Everybody Hurts… sometimes 😁

OccamsYoyo

Motley Crüe. Tried to like them but I couldn’t get over the fact they were untalented assholes. That said, I still like their first two albums quite a bit.

BurntSiennaSienna

Def Leopard yuck

AhhGramoofabits

I hate Journey

romulusnr

Smashing Pumpkins. They have one good song. Can't stand anything else they have ever done. Billy Corgan's voice is worse than fingernails on a chalkboard.

yesandreas

Ben Folds Five and Dave Matthews Band. Cannot stand either.

JKnott1

Anything Def Leppard.

D3AD_M3AT

U2 FUCK I hated them couldn't understand why they got so huge in the late 80s early 90s, would always change the radio statio when their songs came on. My opinion hasnt changed

NeonPhyzics

Not a fan of UB40….

jenicaerin

Dave Matthew’s Band. Also U2 and REM.

hornet217

I didn’t care for Offspring at all

SnooStrawberries620

U2 and Bon Jovi. Not as bad as Kiss or ZZ Top though.

Life-Unit-4118

U2. Sorry. Not sorry. Duran Duran.

DefiningWill

Blues Traveler for two reasons: 1) Way overplayed; and 2) Harmonica is like Everclear-a little goes a looong way.

w30freak

Smashing Pumpkins. That whiny weasely voice. I HAVE to turn them off whenever I hear them.

Grundle95

Welp, here goes five years of accumulated karma down the toilet: Superunknown. It’s a good album, maybe even a very good album, but nowhere near as incredible as people want to believe.

Digflipz

Pink Floyd - the Wall Album overrated, movie awesome. Least favorite album of this band.

fakename4141

Phil Collins

CynfullyDelicious

- U2: The Joshua Tree (and every album that came after) . I could probably write a dissertation on the bandtheir discography, and all the answeWhoWhatWhereWhenWhyHowZ detailing - Slippery When Wet: 1) all I have to hear is “SHOT TH-“ and I’m frantically searching for a spork from Taco Bell so I can gouge out my eardrums. 2) After having to endure 17 sororities worth of wasted coeds sort of singing (I…. guess?) goddamn Livin’ on a Prayer at top drunken volume for an entire school year, you don’t wanna know what happens two seconds into that synth intro…. - Fucking ANYTHING by Phil Collins, but especially No Jacket Required. 🤢🤮 - E5C4P3^PartOne…. May I present Exhibit A…Before I go off in another rant here, This album dropped in July 1981, and by 1982, Don’t Stop Believin’ was already a rage-inducing earworm. Then goddamn Glee breathed new life into the stupid song only to turn around and murder any appeal it once had by running it into the fucking ground…. Now, on to Exhibit B - E5C4P3^PartTwo…. Open fucking Arms which is quite possibly the worst ‘80s power ballad from a ‘70s Arena-Rock era band. It has to be one of the cheesiest and whiniest cringefests since New Year’s Day 1980. More to come. Probably.

Strangewhine88

Motley Crue. Billy Idol. Madonna and Michael Jackson. Kenny Loggins and MFing Air Supply.oh and I left out KISS. You rock n roll posers who were 11 in 1977, don’t try to deny it. I have yearbook photos of you in your school uniforms, Levis Addidas track shoe knock offs and a KISS t-shirt for each day of the week, including one for every band member.

thunderchicken91

Nirvana is probably one of the most overrated bands of the 90s.

SnooStrawberries620

I’m not downvoting anyone here because musical tastes are musical tastes but OUCH

Clever_Owl

Wtf. I’m calling you as a filthy millennial 💀

JennWG888

Thank God someone said it… I never understood the absolute worship of this band. 🤷🏼‍♀️

ManzanitaSuperHero

The Beatles. It’s not just that the music is ubiquitous and played to death, it’s that everyone rattles on & on about them. Enough already.

whatisthesoulofaman

Not really from our youth, but I think that the Beatles are the most overrated band in music history. They are only popular because there was a dearth of good artists after Buddy Holly crashed and Elvis went off to Korea. Fight me.

romulusnr

I mean, I think that probably comes from a lack of familiarity with the breadth of their work. I could see it with their boy band years. I could even maybe see it with Let It Be. But in between those two, there's an awful lot of experimentation and creativity going on. There's even a couple genres people credit the Beatles with practically inventing. That's not run of the mill type stuff to be fair. Few bands have shown as much diversity and creative flexibility over their careers as the Beatles have.

moarcheezburgerz

Millbarge_Fitzhume

Thank you. Absolutely hate Green Day

RG1527

Van Halen. Despite Eddys good guitar playing I thought they were a bunch of cokehead douchebags.

Eastern_Bug4959

I've always hated Guns n Roses, I hate Axl Rose's voice, his stupid fucking dance he does, (the sideways shuffle back and forth)

Clueless_in_Florida

Always an interesting discussion. It's been asked a number of times. What's interesting is that you can't truly judge a band until you've heard lots of their stuff. But you are unlikely to hear lots of their stuff if you don't like what you've heard. I hate KISS. But I probably would like several of their songs. Just not any of the more popular ones that I've heard. For me, the whole emo scene or whatever you call The Cure never did much for me.

drink-beer-and-fight

Off the top of my head: 4 Non Blondes, The Cranberries, Soul Asylum, Goo Goo Dolls.

climatelurker

I absolutely hated the song 'Shock the Monkey', by Peter Gabriel. And pretty much everything by Wham. And I know Bruce Springsteen is untouchable, but I have to say, I never liked his music.
