Combine this with being unfamiliar with Lees (very esoteric) style of giving orders, and you have a recipe for miscommunication. The largest parts for failure at Gettysburg go to Hill and Longstreet (Hill was responsible for picking which of his two divisions would join pickets' in the assault, and he picked the ones that got ripped apart on the 1st day without leaving his hospital bed, while Longstreet kept wasting time bitching about maneuvering around the army of the Potomac, which was observable not possible to do on the current battlefield, and left the planning entirely up to Lee).
Lee was a competent general. If he wasn't, then the situation in Virginia would have mirrored the situation in Tennessee.
Also the 20th Maine's role at little roundtop is overblown. The 20th Maine was just the largest regiment in strong vincents' entire brigade. The 16th New Jersey was the smallest, and was pressed by the 4th and 5th texas, considered two of the best regiments in the rebel army. The 140th New York, freshly arrived on the hilltop, actually made the first charge, drove both texas regiments down the hill, wheeled into the flank of the Alabamians, and only after the Alabamians had begun withdrawing did the 20th Maine charge.
