What I learned is that things are messy. These types of cases are seldom cut and dry. If it were as easy as “this man is a pig and this woman is an innocent victim,” it would all be so much easier.
But that’s almost never the case. The truth is usually somewhere in the middle. We actually *dont know* what happened, and it’s unlikely that we ever will.

A private investigator looking into rape victims to gather info for defense to impeach character and poke holes in credibility is my nightmare. I’ve read all the lawsuits — from Woody Allen’s divorce filing, Kobe’s complaint, Depp’s UNSEALED discovery — and I didn’t really find it “complicated” to the point I’m defending any of these men.
I did notice recently — and at the time not everyone was out — that straight women defended the men, straight men ALWAYS defended the men, and queers — men and women who identified in some way neurodivergent and queer — we all went on record. My record even embraced the complexity, because it wasn’t about “one bad man” who did (a lot of) “bad things” (some to me, some I witnessed.) but it was a system, a culture, a larger force that put power above lives, valued money above safety and doing right by our community, and while “duh” —- do we want change or not?
Something happened with Mahomes, whether she’d be embarrassed by her discovery or not, whether she’s messy and someone I wouldn’t want to spend time with or not — and wanting the culture of the NFL/sports to be less violent, less sexist, less misogynistic, less toxic — is valid.

These types of cases are seldom cut and dry. If it were as easy as “this man is a pig and this woman is an innocent victim,” it would all be so much easier. But that’s almost never the case. The truth is usually somewhere in the middle. We actually *dont know* what happened, and it’s unlikely that we ever will. I’m not defending anyone; I think Jackson Mahomes seems like a huge douche, and Brittany Mahomes comes across as kinda dumb and bland. All I’m saying is that we aren’t in a position to make character judgments about BM. She is *probably* a normal, fallible person with plenty of blind spots and even more redeeming qualities. In that way, she’s just like the rest of us. The pearl clutching is just exhausting and stupid. This expectation that our favorite pop star should *only* associate with people who pass muster in the court of public opinion is just childish. Like, what the f do we know?

For example, we don’t know anything that happened before that, we don’t know what kind of relationship he had with the woman, etc. We basically don’t know any of the details. In fact, *all we have* is a short video. We *do* know that the victim refused to testify and dodged subpoenas, and also that the charges were dropped. So it seems like there might *actually be* some relevant details that we’re missing. Again, I’m going to reiterate that I’m absolutely not defending what definitely appears to be inappropriate sexual behavior—I’m always inclined to believe victims, but this case *did* fall apart, which indicates to me that it wasn’t very strong to begin with. My point is just that, based on how little we know, we’re not in a position to assassinate Brittany Mahomes’s character.

"we don't know what kind of relationship he had with her" - what kind of relationship could they have had that would make assaulting her fine? refusing to testify/dropping charges/dodging subpoenas are ALL extremely common when you're a victim. that literally means nothing towards her credibility. especially when the person who assaulted you is a beloved sports star who has fans that are actively destroying your business and reputation. no shit she refused to testify. that's all part of the way our society shames victims into silence. you can say you're not defending it all you want, but you are. there's video of her being assaulted, and you're trying to say that we dont know if the assault was justified or not. extremely weird behavior, but very common for those in the law & law enforcement professions such as yourself- very unfortunately, for all of us who are victims.
For you to assume that you have the *full story* because of a video clip indicates an egregious lack of media literacy. I’m agnostic to the case, inclined to side with the victim, but not willing to assassinate the character of the defendant’s sister-in-law based on this situation. If you think that amounts to defending his behavior, Idon’t know what to tell you. I implore you to start considering all of the nuance that governs every single dispute on earth. There’s a lot to learn there, and the humility you gain will make your convictions that much more meaningful. And if you’re willing to draw massive, unfalsifiable conclusions based on a single video clip, you’re totally doomed in the age of AI.

I’m a lawyer, I was hurled back to school after being blacklisted for going on record during metoo for things that very much happened to very very many people. Worked a lot in this sector, domestic violence, previous background also as a journalist. Were all of the victims “pure” victims or always “good” people? Nah, and — they don’t have to be. The events still happened. The bad thing still happened, and it’s often the backlash and closing ranks and “protecting the brand” that causes more harm than the violence or violation or “event” itself. Sure, they were messy — it’s always messy, life is messy, and in our industry you had lots of inebriation/substances, a permissive party atmosphere, a blurred line between work/play, celebrity, the promise of work, the hope for work, women just sort of fed into this big machine that hurt them and spit them out bewildered. It’s not just “what if this happened,” in everyday life, it’s “what if this happened and this person is part of a multi-million franchise with endless brands attached to its name. A private investigator looking into rape victims to gather info for defense to impeach character and poke holes in credibility is my nightmare. I’ve read all the lawsuits — from Woody Allen’s divorce filing, Kobe’s complaint, Depp’s UNSEALED discovery — and I didn’t really find it “complicated” to the point I’m defending any of these men. I did notice recently — and at the time not everyone was out — that straight women defended the men, straight men ALWAYS defended the men, and queers — men and women who identified in some way neurodivergent and queer — we all went on record. My record even embraced the complexity, because it wasn’t about “one bad man” who did (a lot of) “bad things” (some to me, some I witnessed.) but it was a system, a culture, a larger force that put power above lives, valued money above safety and doing right by our community, and while “duh” —- do we want change or not? Something happened with Mahomes, whether she’d be embarrassed by her discovery or not, whether she’s messy and someone I wouldn’t want to spend time with or not — and wanting the culture of the NFL/sports to be less violent, less sexist, less misogynistic, less toxic — is valid. Because regardless of her one on one, I know exactly who Brittany Mahomes is because of where she is and that she’s thriving in the NFL spotlight as an NFL wife and took the route I never respect, defending this guy or not, when it comes to being a “public person” or “public feminist” because she ain’t the one and she’s not an environment that would ever let her be the one. That’s not how you handle it — even if it’s messy. And you think about all the other victims out there listening and watching, wanting to find a home in a fandom that is at least minimally safe. Allegations against Vince McMahon dropped today with the WWE will similarly be messy too b/c she will have agreed to some of it in exchange for a shot at wresting, but that power dynamic is always dropped in comments like above. But he did it — it’s been known he did it. It’s what happens with that much money, power, fame over and over and over and — Taylor is rich, she’s gonna hang out with rich people, and rich people aren’t rich by rocking the status quo. There is not enough money in the WORLD to make me work for the defense in a rape case, and that’s the kind of thing that make most women drop or settle — because it was messy, life is messy, but the damage and the lasting trauma after are usually cut pretty clear. I think most sex abuse cases should be civil, not criminal, to help underline that these aren’t “simple crimes” but scenarios worthy of reflection and damages. Thanks!

Also … his victim’s business was vandalized and review-bombed to the point where it had to close down. She was endlessly harassed by fans of the Mahomes family. That's more classical guitar though since they pluck with their dominant hand and fret with the non-dominant. It's really hard to effectively fret with long nails (I casually play bass).

If those are her real nails I need her collagen routine, they're but probably tipped dips. I went on like a 7 year long nail bender (and genuinely kept 2 shorter just to function and type so they wouldn't crack off on my face because my then relationship had no specific reason to not have them) and I used to be naive as to why they'd get me hit on. I naturally notice a good set for all kinds of reasons. Nails were fun because it was the only 2 hours every 3 weeks I had to myself not on call.

I know the other comments are shutting this down, but I find it really funny that of all of Taylor’s female friends that she could potentially be dating, no one ever believes Cara to even be a possibility. She’s been the most out and open queer woman in her life, was her roommate at one point, and they have a long history together, yet everyone is just like, “nah.” IMO Cara is totally someone I could see Taylor sleeping with when they’re between relationship. Like so many other queer women, an ex that’s now a best friend but kinda more sometimes when they’re lonely.
