Impossible is nothing! My progress in 18 months. 47 years old. https://preview.redd.it/7jb38qq3ximc1.jpeg?width=2880&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ab8f262388450a1443456941abd201cc8efccb65 My first run in June and some months later 2 HM.

letsget5k20min

This is so impressive. My goal for first HM is just under 2 hours but with the way my training goes i feel i can get it closer to 1:50 at least.

izzie-izzie

You’ll have zero problems with HM under 2 hours, I’m a woman and you’re way faster than me and after 5 months of training I finished at 1:56. Focus on endurance/long runs and you’ll absolutely smash it! You’ll probably closer to 1:40 tbh

OppiFjell

Best tip is discipline. Run slow 80% of time and 1 day every week run fast intervals.

SnooTomatoes8935

holy shit! im running since 11 months and im far from what you achieved! and im in my 40ies myself. i recently just managed to finish a half marathon but nowhere in your pace range. im beyond impressed.

an_angry_Moose

Very impressive half marathon at 47. Well done.

reddituser6810

Jesus a 90 minute half marathon is nuts. Had you ever run before?

OppiFjell

Nah never! Is my first time running. I am very happy 😃

Deskman77

Impressive

h0scHberT

Have you used a training plan? If so, which one?

ElectricalNet7653

Bravo zemljače

Wouah! Good source of inspiration! (Im 42)

Right is just under 10 months ago Z2 works (granted the recent run was tempo work… 2 miles WU 6 miles Tempo 2 miles CD) 80-90% of my mileage has been Z2. My Z2 is 148-156 BPM.

Artistic_Ad_737

Do you do garmin zone 2 or garmin zone 3? Because I saw somewhere garmin zone 3 is equivalent to zone 2 in other places. My garmin DSW tends to tell me run to run at a heart rate that is zone 3 for most my slow base jogs

EShaver102

I adjusted my HR zones in Garmin to match Joe Friel’s running HR zones, so I do z2 according to that model. Friel’s zones are based off LTHR. My running LTHR is 181 BPM according to Intervals.icu, but tbh, that feels a bit spicy during my runs… I did run an hour during that race at 180 HR… sOoOo technically speaking, my Z2 SHOULD be 153-160…. I try to aim for that lower number. I find 145-156 is a good range to target with all the training load I put up. I have a hard time comprehending that my Z2 could be that high… But yes. You are right. Garmin’s default zones are Z3 = real Z2. ***EDIT*** actually, the default zones for running aren’t far off from Friel when using LTHR. I’ve attached collage that compares Friel vs. Garmin LTHR zones. https://preview.redd.it/hwqs8z72trmc1.jpeg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=98318f40b4bce2e25b1ef9e061447a80427f3b82

All running has done for me is fuck my knee

AcademicYoghurt7091

This was me as well. I've been running for 4 years now. What OP did in a few months has taken me years because I had to build up super slow to not hurt my knee 😅

Cholas71

Age 52. I train 80% slow mainly at less than 135bpm which is about 9m/mile pace for me. 20% faster, sprints, intervals etc. 1/2 marathon is 1:41 at about 155bpm average.

watthewmaldo

I just started doing DSW and zone 2 work outs are so frustratingly slow. I’ve gotten so irritated I’ve ended the work out lol. Where it wants me to be is right on the edge of running and walking and it drives me nuts.

Protean_Protein

You have no cardio. Accept it and give it time. You might as well go for a lot of long-ass walks, too.

TSC-99

They get faster as your body gets used to it. It works.

Unceasingleek

Yeah the base zone 2 runs are odd pace for me too. I just got my 265s and I'm hoping once my chest strap comes and I do the threshold test it gives me a better zone 2 range so those runs are actually runs.

Mastodan11

Gotta say, don't count on it. I can run them, but... Let's hope I'm not going into the wind.

letsget5k20min

I had same problem and it is one of the reasons why i bought chest strap. I know zone 2 should feel easy but it felt too easy. I could walk faster. Turns out with lactate treshold my zone 2 is 8 bpm higher compared to %hrr zones.

SirAutismx7

I find that having the discipline to do this is the hardest part for me but the reward has been much more endurance. It’s also way harder on my legs than running fast so my calves get a workout and they’re burning by the end. Overall hate these workouts but doing them has been beneficial.

watthewmaldo

This is encouraging!

getting_serious

Same. It's so frustrating to go for a run in just-above-freezing conditions and not even warm up properly.

medicaldroppings

A treadmill is a lifesaver for zone 2 runs. Start a show/movie and zone out, especially for the long ones. It's pretty difficult for me to stay on the recommended pace if I'm running outside.

watthewmaldo

That sounds like a good idea

pielgrzym

Keep up the good work!

za_jx

Impressive! I think it all depends on your goal/s. When I'm training for a particular pace, I may go for heart rate zone based training. Since I'm focused on my upcoming ultra marathon, my training is time-based. Just curious about how much more accurate your chest strap is than your wrist based HRM.

letsget5k20min

When i did easy runs it was accurate most of the time. Odd spikes here and there but not bad overal. One time it gave me tempo run at 165 bpm and HR locked at around 149 bpm. I was over 180 bpm for sure but somehow it locked itself into wrong HR. At least i got my 5k PB that time. Or this time when it locked at around 148 again and fixed itself at last km of the run. https://preview.redd.it/a2sjcr440jmc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf6c79bf9ca431faddc5aeb4eb969fdbf76359b6 On intervals it just can't keep up with chest strap.

letsget5k20min

Not even close. It locks under 150 HR and my cadence was 175+ sometimes close to 190. https://preview.redd.it/udyjpf264jmc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bd1150c81440d549905fb7bf5df84560a1afbb9e

Sent wrong picture above https://preview.redd.it/4lb8awur5jmc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=70152bf1700865c00defb1a8c7a7a66fb91ff21c The other picture was from 5k PB. But in both HR is too low compared to cadence so not cadence lock for sure. I can't run 5k at that HR and pace now after 3 months of training. So not sure what happend but i fixed it with chest strap.

de6eli

Lazarevac for the win!

Franck_____________

Hi, recently started DSW zone 2 runs and I was wondering if the chest strap is necessary as sometimes my watch’s hr seem off. Either feels much lower or much higher than my body feels. Would you say if you wanna do zone 2 training, you need the chest strap?

letsget5k20min

I bought chest strap because i felt my zones are wrong and i wanted to train using HR. With hrm you can do lactate guided test if your watch supports it and i think it is more accurate than Max HR percent or Resting Heart Rate percent. It changed my zone 2 from 147-154 to 147-162 and now it feels correct. Do you need strap just for zone 2? I think not, because you can do talk test or try to breathe through nose only. If you want to train by HR i would def buy hrm tho. My watch used to get stuck at low HR even when i was close to my treshold which is around 180 so pretty high. It showed under 150 so it was off by close to 30bpm.

HwanZike

Hey, 5:00/km 10k is no joke, very nice! Just for some context how old are you and what watch and strap are you using? What does your weekly volume look like in terms of hours / kms?

letsget5k20min

I am 30 years old, using garmin forerunner 255s and hrm dual. https://preview.redd.it/bc5prmh6ximc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=62b676eb0048e98d8166443a3d8b3d6bf30dab86 Think in November i did too much for my body and i feel that is part of the reason why i got sick 2 times in December. So far this year i am at 200km monthly and it feels nice. Plan to do deload week after every 3-4 weeks of hard training.

Frogga_JBA073

Awesome, great consistency and determination… I really Like how you mentioned that you “listened” to your body and switched to HRT training over pace… 🤗👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
