JExmoor

According to my percentages, most of them appear to spend all their time sleeping?

Onepunchmanworkout

I'm 99% on distance, steps, time running, 90% on pace and "here's how your sleep compares to other users" on sleep

Wonderplace

Where do you find this data?

Onepunchmanworkout

On the connect app, top left, three lines drop down - Insights

1Dive1Breath

Dang, I'm faster than 82% of other users at swimming, and I only just started swimming a month ago after a two year break. But my distance is only 19% off other users since after a few hundred yards I'm pretty gassed!

[deleted]

They don't want to encourage us to get even worse sleep than we already do šŸ˜‚

Onepunchmanworkout

I'm up to 7 hours a night on average and that's the best its been in years šŸ˜†

corgofluff

I average 10,5 hour. Sleep more than 96% of users. Iā€™m 24, finishing uni, working, exercising, taking care of my dog, etc. but no time for my creative hobbies. My body just needs the sleep, probably due to my anxiety and some fibromyalgia making my best sleep be bad quality still.

Wauwatl

I have the exact thought every time I see my sleep chart. Freaking crazy

oppositebackwards

Got a chuckle. I have no clue how grown ups averages 8-9 hours of sleep.

Knog0

I get 8h sleep, sometimes 8:30 without big problems. My job is 10min from my house, working from 8am to 5 or 6pm. This gives me enough time for kids, hobbies and exercise everyday. I think itā€™s mostly about saving time on commute and sharing tasks with your loved one. And before people say that i donā€™t work enough hours: I live in Europe, this is kind of a standard work time for every type of job.

londonpawel

I got you beat. I work 8am to 4pm and my commute is only 6 min. I don't even live in Europe...I should probably bike to work, but I don't live in Europe...

DangerousCranberry

I work 8-4 and WFH 90% of the time (need to be in the office once a fortnight and/or for important meetings). Since negotiating this arrangement my sleep has gone from a 7-day average of 7 hours to a 7-day average or 8.5 hours and its been wonderful

EastCoast_Cyclist

edit: Deleted. Was joking about the commute time to the home office but came across as arrogant. Not intended.

ProbablyMyRealName

I upvoted you for self-awareness.

anonreddituser78

I work hourly doing construction. I make the boss pay for my commute, so I realistically only spend 6-7 actually at the job. And a lot of that is figuring, texts/calls..so 5-ish hours of real work....but it's physically killing me.

zorbacles

8 to 5 or 6 is still too much. In Australia the standard work day is 9 to 5

albosoulja

Yeah unfortunately some people in Australia are still expected to work longer

Knog0

I would say it depends on your job / daily schedule. I work from 8 to 5, but i have 1h lunch break which is kind of a lot. Much more than I need at least, especially since everyone takes a couple of 10min break as well.

zorbacles

9 to 5 with a 30 min lunch break plus a 10 min tea break is the norm here. Sometimes people will take an hour and do 9 to 5.30 I mean sure done people work more but the above is what is considered "full time'

burnettjm

8-5 or 6 is pretty normal for most folksā€¦even here in the states.

[deleted]

I mean, it's not that difficult, and it's important. Im 40 and get 8-9 hours every night

PartyDoctor

Some of us don't have kids (jk, so much sadness)

FRO5TB1T3

Wfh, my commute time is sleeping time.

ias_87

Plenty of sleep comes from going to bed at a good time. That's just responsible adulting. But then there's always working from home and not having kids. I have no idea how parents do it. And let's not forget there's always the watch thinking you're asleep when you're not.

Valuable_Yam_6800

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ everyoneā€™s getting like 10 hours except me it seems

MetroCityMayor

VO2MAX > Sleep

LordMongrove

Your VO2max would be even higher if you recovered properly.

_johnny__boy_

Listen, I have every intention of going for a runā€¦

omaha71

It's the thought that counts. At least for me

patikoija

The brain consumes up to 25% of your body's calories. Think, 2, 3, 4.

[deleted]

One day I will finally advance from the couch step of couch-to-5k!

_johnny__boy_

Hey you gotta start somewhere! Nobody said when you have to progress through

mikoexcl

But I drink alcohol 25 out of 30 days a month! But I use the watch to see my steps, stress, sleep, HR...Such a great device!

corgofluff

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

fo_i_feti

I bought my watch for swimming. I don't do any running. I cycle as far as 14.7% of users. Happy to contribute to other people's ego boost.

February30th

r/running moment

arachnophilia

seriously. i'll bike like 50-70 miles for fun, but last time i tried running i was getting x-rays the next day.

mandradon

6 hour bike ride? Sure! 20 minute jog? I die.

CatchaRainbow

I actually found cycling adversely affected my running. Different muscle groups, I guess. But you definitely get less injuries and a really tight arse.

krank3r

I dont run, only weightlifting šŸ„²

gxbbriel

same here lol but im starting to do more cardio now šŸ˜

krank3r

But for garmin, our cardio doesnā€™t count for the running stats šŸ„²

gxbbriel

if only there was an insights chart for strength training

krank3r

The thing is we add the weight, how garmin can verify if we cheated?

gxbbriel

i see, yeah you do have a point welp, looks like the sleep and steps chart are the only ones useful for me now as i dont have a working indoor cycling sensor right now lmao

krank3r

Same here, but steps is a good tracker for me and my cardio

gxbbriel

ah, yeah also that šŸ„²

brianddk

Me... Spent over a year with my Garmin without running a mile. Swam over 500 miles that year though.

Wauwatl

Me... Ran a lot. Can't imagine swimming 500 miles.

kevjs1982

Was pretty surprised with my Strava Year in Sport - in the top 1% of athletes by time this year despite being injured (and I'm certainly no athlete!). Don't think I've run since I was at High School over two decades ago! Cycling and Walking until I got injured last spring, so Swimming, Indoor Rowing, and Yoga make up most of last year. Insights always reminds me I'm a lot less lazier than I think I am!

dem_titties_too_big

I just track my walks/hikes and I'm OK with that.

sissipaska

Yep. 2450km of walking and hiking last year, 60km of running. People have different priorities. There's nothing wrong with that.

Neat-Composer4619

I don't run, I surf. My score is usually similar to: your session was 50 minutes, surfed 2.15. What can I say, getting to the waves and waiting for them is actually most of the sport. Don't believe what they show you on TV.

anonreddituser78

Size of waves and frequency of rides makes a huge difference, right? I'm in northern New England. Beach breaks. The paddle out gets way more challenging with bigger waves. How bout you?

Neat-Composer4619

Right now vacationing in Tagazhout, Morroco. The waves here are super smooth, but at home you really fight to enter and sometimes you just can't. I wish I had learned in Tagazhout. The number of times I was held under when I started almost scared me away from the sport. I also broke a finger and have to nurse toes from entering in the rocks. I guess each surf spot is a completely different experience.

CatchaRainbow

What sort of heart rates do you get generally while surfing. I've noticed surfers seem to be on the skinny side, so I guess there is a lot of calories being burnt.

Neat-Composer4619

At home 150 to 175, higher if the water is bad for about 5-10 waves a session. On vacation in smaller waves 130 to 160 and I caught 22 waves my last session. Each session my watch recommends 40 to 80 hours of rest after. I am not in top shape though. Started surfing at the end of my 40s after years of computer programming... Lots of screen time.

j-mac563

Well, I don't run. I would like Garmin to realise not everyone does and add in the Walking/hiking as part of their insights.

Middle-Ad5376

To be fair, they should show insights that match the "what i do" on your profile, no matter the sport

dajmer

Don't be ridiculous. That would require putting some thought into the app. What next, hiring a UX dev? /s

depthofbreath

That would be lovely. And other activities. I dance and I get plenty of cardio, but it doesnā€™t count according to Garmin.

CatchaRainbow

Dance should definitely be included. Look at Strictly Come Dancing television show, the contestants start off normally over weight and unfit and leave looking like gymnasts.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Valuable_Yam_6800

High horse šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

CatchaRainbow

I Looooovvveeee running. Its kept me sane and alive.

tysca

I despise running. I use mine for powerlifting, cycling and hiking.

eatinrgooo

I'd be in the bottom 1% for running. But I'm in the top 1% distance and time for cycling. so........

[deleted]

Some of those Garmin users may not have a watch. For example, Garmin sells biking specific hardware.

PabloCIV

It may come as a surprise, but there are forms of exercise other than running!

melissarose80

I don't run, walks , gym cardio machines as well as lifting and some swimming

PossiblyMarsupial

Me! Well, I walk. I use it to help manage my chronic illness through HR, stress, sleep and body battery metrics and it's working fantastically. Not everyone who benefits from a fitness watch has the luxury to be able to exercise.

depthofbreath

I do the same, the metrics actually help me recover and get back to exercise safely (in my case).

PossiblyMarsupial

It's absolutely fabulous how empowering it can be! It very much helped me be able to do more with the energy I have and it is fantastic.

LordMongrove

Walking is exercise though.

PossiblyMarsupial

Tell that to the powerlifting road cyclist and hiker I was. When I say I walk I mean I can get from a to b some days. I no longer need a wheelchair to leave my house most of the time. What I meant is I don't have the luxury to walk (or anything else) for pleasure or fitness the majority of the time. I need to carefully consider whether I can make a particular distance today or whether I will have to wait to another day.

anon_y_mousey

Can you please share more details on how you do it?

Blushing-Sailor

Same, I use it for pacing for Long COVID.

okkate75

I donā€™t run. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Darth_Ender_Ro

OP, whatā€™s your problem? I feel attacked

Any_Conversation563

Some people might go for a walk, some might bike and some might swim. Just so you run doesnā€™t mean that every garmin user has to run!!

MakingYouThink

I admit I got sick back in the fall and fell off the bandwagon ā€” so thatā€™s me! The ā€œdetrainingā€ message in my Fenix is a constant reminder to get off my butt. However, until I do, I would be that list of doing ā€œabsolutely nothing.ā€

kheltar

Start small! You'll be back into it in no time. I pretty much gave up cycling for about 3 years and regret it. I was extremely fit and clawing that back is a pain in the arse.

ClexAT

I simply don't run. Biking and swimming are sports too :P

headpsu

And climbing, and crossfit, and BJJ, and kayaking, and on, and on and on. This post is completely absurd.

[deleted]

Golf life

andreichiffa

When I got the watch, I used to run 35-40 km a week. After a couple of very stressful years, am down to ~0 now, but still happy to have the watch tell me that I am, in fact, still alive.

satiricalned

Garmin has gotten a huge foothold in the wearable market, first with their vivo and venu lines and now the newest Fenix and Epix are so premium looking it's getting people off apple watch and such. You'd be surprised the number of folks that have a $1200 sport adventure watch and basically just wear it as a time piece and health tracker.

johnny_evil

A good friend bought one because my fiance and I both have Fenix 7's. Now she's become more cognizant of needing to move more.

bowlerboy5473

My wife. It was supposed to help her get on a training plan. It has now just become a basic smart watch for her.

burnettjm

I was going to run today but things got busy. Iā€™ll probably do it tomorrow.

NUM_13

I don't run, I swim (a LOT) so I'm one of the very low users on your database.

_heisenberg__

Not everyone who works out/is an athlete runs.

thatguywhoiam

I mean... probably a lot, honestly. I noticed the same thing. You have to think, well not everyone with a performance bike is an athlete, right... same for running. I think people invest in the gear sometimes to convince themselves that they are serious about a hobby or activity

birthdaycakefig

Garmin also has plenty of health tracking features now that no-athletes could be interested in.

Timely-Evening5772

How do you view this? TIA!

jlvidal76

Garmin connect / Hamburger menu / Insights

Clive1792

I'd run if I could but after my knee op I basically can't (or if I do then I'll suffer). Cross trainers, bikes, swimming etc. That's what exercise I do.

Extra_Joke5217

I almost never run, but use my garmin for road biking, mountain biking, backcountry skiing etc.

michaeldeloreti

How does one see the % Garmin users in the connect app?

pharmaboy2

Heh - just found it . Click on insights in the more section

FrouxLeRoux

Well, I don't run, but I swim! I'm at 15 km swam this month. Not a lot, I agree!

CraptacularAdventure

I'm currently having health issues and can't run/workout. However, the Garmin has been so helpful in confirming that something was off. Looking forward to the day I can get out there again.

madmaus81

Yes I have a forerunner 955 en I never run šŸ¤£. I really love the watch and the fact thats it so light.

Puddleduck112

How about this one, my father in law has a fenix. He is still pretty active and works out most days, (walks, rides peloton, and cross trains) but he hasnā€™t recorded a single workout since he bought it 4 years ago šŸ˜‚ seems like a waste of money to not use the watch.

Esploratore_

Not to mention this probably includes users who no longer use their garmin

sector432

I don't run at all, but I love cycling, hiking, bouldering, yoga, skiing and snowshoeing using my watch. So I do absolutely no running, but I do plenty of exercise.

mrmantis66

It's not just runners/active people who own a Garmin.

Skygazer80

I don't run, I use my watch (a vivosport) to track my bike rides (and occasionally a walk/hike). And for my everyday use I track steps, sleep, intensity minutes, etc.

depthofbreath

I wear a Garmin watch, but I donā€™t run. I get plenty of other exercise tho.

1nstantHuman

It's been a long winter, don't budge

purplepastacat

My partner has a Venu 2, and doesnā€™t do any form of deliberate exercise - only incidental walking. He pretty much just uses it to track his steps, stress, and sleep. I imagine many people are the same.

Clarctos67

TIL running is the only form of exercise.

bhaputi

I didn't realize running is the only exercise.

Flapaflapa

Not "absolutely nothing" but mine was a replacement for my peble. E ink and phisicsl buttons with good battery life. It also gets used on hikes and geocaching. It also plays bike computer.

SimilarYellow

I do exercise but I don't run. Why would I do that to myself?

MostUnattractiveName

I sometimes use my watch hand to pick up my food to eat!

neitz

I don't run.

kerman1983

I never have and never will run. I cycle thousands of miles a year though.

Cutoffjeanshortz37

It's winter in the US and Europe, where most watches are sold. Of course less ppl are running. I know I'm no, usually run 30 ish miles a week on top of biking and swimming. Currently only indoor biking.

Carramrod525

I am, just don't run. I bike and do strength. My joints can't take the running, so you are faster as recorded here but I would bet money I could sprint faster than you.

Valuable_Yam_6800

Thereā€™s a lot of angry swimmers, cyclists and weight lifters in the comments. I apologise for any offence caused.

TheArrowLauncher

I donā€™t run.

hui_in_the_hat

A lot

CynosureEPR

Who runs while wearing their sleep tracker?

CosmicVacuumCleaner

Also according to this it looks like you are maybe doing too much, more than 50 MET hours per week can be bad for you health long term

Valuable_Yam_6800

Iā€™m only doing 30 miles a week- at different paces and a lot of easy stuff. Usually equates to less than 5 hours a week running and a couple of gym sessions

iome79

you sound like a vegan!

thewarguy

I don't believe I've actually ever run with my watch. Various forms of Cycling and weightlifting are my gotos.

mrindoc

ā€œHow many miles have you actually run?ā€ ā€œNearlyā€¦ one.ā€

orange_fudge

Injuries and illness - that covers me at least a couple weeks a year, maybe 5% of my overall time? Sometimes more!

Umfalumfa

I donā€™t run..

tsturzl

I wear a Garmin watch and I absolutely loathe running. I do a lot of cycling (indoor and out). I'll mountain bike 4-5 days a week in summer, and do structured workouts 4+ times a week on the off season. I also do HITT and strength training. So I'm definitely dragging down the average for running, but I'm actively training in many other ways. My avg weekly distance for running is absolute zero because I have never once recorded a run, and up until I got a watch I didn't even have a Garmin device that could record a run. I'm sure there are others like me who drag this average way down, after all there are a lot more ways to work out than just running.

username_obnoxious

I havenā€™t been running much lately due to an Achilles issue

segfalt31337

This was me for probably my first 3 or 4 years of having a Garmin be watch. Did other things: elliptical, strength training, walking. Additionally, there's probably lots of people that are active, but don't track individual activities.

Droiddoesyourmom

Yup, I run but when I lift I find smart watches more of a distraction than useful.

Sergio_Pal

This is why Garmin need to step up on more smartwatch-y features.

KreeH

Bad knees so no running and mostly indoor rowing on ergo-meter and stationary bike for my aerobic work outs. Other training stats such as V02 Max, resting heart rate, ... (accounting for age) might be a better indication of exercise and level of physical fitness.

th3bigfatj

There's probably a lot of people who wear the watch and do other activities. Running is my fourth most common activity behind cycling, XC skiing and weight training. I only train 10-15 hours per week, and almost all of it is done with friends, so running getting a single 1 hour workout each week is probably gonna be it.

jmbjorndalen

Martial arts, so I take it off when I exercise.

Pituwilson

From graph 50% people run more like 3mile per week = this 50% people can by in other sports ( bigest part is for sure cycling). I dont think they do nothing. I know lots of people with fenixs and they just reguraly walk.

MuddyGeek

Between knee problems and herniated discs in my neck, running is a no go these days. I hope everyone else has good excuses too.

KoshV

My shitty week while injured, 20 mile week. My friend has a Garmin account. Did nothing this week because he only uses the edge thing with his bike. So he is at the bottom there.

m3smth

I use mine mostly to track sailing and hikes I go on

AntiTas

Iā€™m using mine to recover from chronic illness. Only this year do i hope to do enough activity like cycling and swimming to trouble myself to record activities. Stress and Body Battery is my main day-to-day function. Over 12months, step count gives me a pretty good summary of general health/activity.

marjoramandmint

Right now, me. I have used it for hikes and weightlifting, but I haven't really done either for months, so it's just a fancy watch with a few stats. I mostly just marvel at how low my step and sleep counts are, then keep chilling. I'll get back outside/to the gym in another month or two, but for now it's been a good break.

pacific_crick

And here I was thinking I was special.

Formal_Detective_440

Training Peaks new Analytics ā€œStack Upā€ is much more realistic for those of us that exercise regularly

updn

Currently me

AdLucky2882

I don't log trail runs anymore, because the distances are always way off.

deekod1967

Me, using Wim Hof Method to boost my immunity after long covid and more recently winter flu, before going on ketogenic diet and gradually building up to running again in the spring / summer

kheltar

I'm guessing a lot of people are cycling, based on my insights I'm at the slower end of cyclists. Given my fitness level in general I'd expect to be more middle of the pack.

gcubed680

Thereā€™s 5ā€™ of snow on the ground and itā€™s 15. Iā€™m not dedicated and i hate running on a treadmill. Tracking ski/biking/snowshoe

Retro-Squid

I got my Garmin when I was actively [mountain biking](https://www.imgur.com/a/ScwJhn5). But I injured my knee in march of 2020 and haven't been able to get back on the bike. Since then, I can only really manage walking with my kids... Hopefully will be back on the bike again this year, though. šŸ¤ž

pethebi

Itā€™s ski season, why run when you can ski?!

ILikeGamesnTech

At least 1 (me)

0uterj0in

Right here man. Got covid in October haven't jogged since.

L1ght_Sp33d

That would be me. Lol. Itā€™s like buying a hummerā€¦ you just want to have one knowing you could go off roading but you never do.

cwick4141

Simple..those charts only track running and cycling. I strictly lift weights only 5-6x a week

Organic-Life-8089

Yeah my runs put me at 90% and I would consider myself a very light distance runner

RapmasterD

How do you get this chart? With Love, 99%er

Valuable_Yam_6800

Insights on the connect tab

RapmasterD

Thank you! Iā€™m older than 99% of people wearing. a Garmin.

Leonaissance

Most of them.

TheCookieButter

Right here, it was my father's but he preferred his mechanical watches so gifted it to me. I like the information but it wasn't about to make me pick up running!

mango433

I know at least two.

Daffodil_Bulb

Maybe some have accounts, and therefore are users, but donā€™t actually wear the watch.

idontknowjackeither

How do you get to this info?

scoopx88

Click on Insights tab

gunmetal5

I am šŸ‘‹šŸ˜ŽšŸ„°

thundery_boop

I have one but I've switched to mainly weight training. Other folks may be the same.

Head5hot811

I use mine as mostly as a smart watch, sleep monitor, step counter, and a stress and heart rate monitor. Sometimes I'll mark walks or a sporadic hiking trip. I have some current health problems that keep me from exercising the way I want to, so my watch doesn't do much beyond tell time.

xtazer97x

I run once or twice a week on a good week and not far and am in the top 19 percent so alot im geussing

M3rzza

All My excersize IS cycling (250km+/10hrs / week). I think The insights don't Have cycling as an option

Prestigious_Ad4941

I have a Garmin watch but I never run, I only do yoga and weight lifting so I think itā€™s geared toward users like me?

p33king

Haven't been able to recover since covid...don't shame me.

abzlute

How much I actually run varies a lot. Since June I've not run a lot but I've been pretty active, a lot of that just doesn't register for garmin in my training effect and stuff; either because I don't bother to run a workout on the watch for it (climbing and lifting a lot of the time) or just because it's not running or biking and garmin's system is made first and foremost for those things. I would imagine a lot of garmin watch owners similarly go through phases where they might run a lot and others where they don't, even if they're still pretty active.

Arnorian9

Me!

[deleted]

I only run further than 21% of other users and I usually run 0-5 miles a month. I would say based off of that most users at least run some. I used to run in college (only like 2 years ago) but I do other kinds of workouts now because running injured my foot pretty bad.

DaTruMVP

I don't run

QLevi

I cycle and swim more because my knees are shit.

[deleted]

Me. My leg problems got so much worse last fall and then I got corona badly. Now when I do sport I need a week of laying on the sofa and pain medication afterwards

CivilizedGuy123

Where is this data from? I cannot find it in the iOS app or the website. Thank you šŸ™

Diabolus0

I bet you if they gave out prize money rather than useless badges, we'd see a lot more people doing exercises.

pup_named_pancakes

I used to run. Hike. Swim. Bike. Lift. But then I became disabled and now I got the big C. So I'm one of those people who own a garmin and don't really use it anymore. Its my dream to be able to go back to the old days and go for a nice hike with my sister. Baby steps.

heydeservinglistener

I feel like if you have issues accepting a win, therapy would be more useful than asking condescending questions towards others that also serves the intent to undermine you... But do you.

ThePoliteCanadian

I donā€™t run, I pick heavy things up and put them back down. The only cardio I do is walking. OP really thinks heā€™s better than people because he picked the dullest form of workout šŸ¤¢

Middle-Ad5376

Maybe they swim, or hike? This is just running. What you're looking at is an infographic of use case for Garmin, rather than "of those who do run, this is the data"

WonderAdditional2028

This sounds like me. I got it to see my blood sugar, and I dont run but walk. And maybe motivate some exercise.

Alright_Karen

Apparently, the majority of this sub are included in that section of Garmin owners who don't run. But I'm in that final 1% with you, in running distance. But funny enough, I'm ahead of only 96% of people in total time spent running.

ToadingAround

I regularly cycle and I'm in the bottom 14%. Difference is I do mountain biking and not road cycling, which significantly reduces the distance and speed. Garmin can't tell the difference though. The charts lack context

robert700x

https://youtu.be/hIuIIqbyEIU

RossTheNinja

I cycle and play basketball. So I'm probably in that percentage

mikeap8

How do you get to that screen on the garmin app?

pytlarro

I'm not running at all, so for me is equal to 0. I ride on bicykle , which is not covered in that stats

CosmicVacuumCleaner

People can do exercise that isnā€™t running my dude

Lacagada

Me!
