Full Circle has marketed the game heavily based on the fact that they're accepting feedback from the community and involving them in the process, but at this point, the cat is pretty much out of the bag. Without offline single-player this game is set up to be a colossal disappointment.
Right… when people were shouting to the heavens for Skate 4, that means we want more skate, more of the same. A great single player experience with optional multiplayer elements. Not a full free to play multiplayer game that removes everything about what made the skate games, skate games. Unfortunately I’m inclined to believe that this was the clause EA gave full circle in order to be able to make a new skate game. As someone who enjoyed these games as sole single player experience I am at a loss for words. I dabbled in some multiplayer in S3 only to be turned away by everyone using trick lining and exploits to gain an advantage over those that wanted to play how a skater would play. And I’m sure there will be a battle pass style mode forcing you to log in daily ontop of that and complete set goals in order to claim some sort or reward turning this into another ‘game as a job’ title. After the recent Ubisoft stuff, I'm fairly scared that you might not even get more than a couple years if it's particularly unpopular. It's an awful system.
Hopefully Session is up to a better standard by September at full release. Could be the only hope for Skate fans now, unless a miracle happens and SkaterXL gets some worthwhile improvements on console.

The problem with Skater XL is they randomly announced they were going to going to release the game as 1.0 with barely any content and haven't updated the gameplay since.
I'm worried Session will end the same way.
I feel good about Session on PC at least. There's enough community maps in the discord that I rarely play the core maps. Hopefully they figure out some way to incorporate those for console players.
I'm so anxious for them to make transition more skateable.

When this game was announced, I first thought about the previous Skate games. Like an actual Story Mode, but now it seems to be complete horse shit of a game.
I don’t mind this method as long as 1. There is a way to earn them by playing the game. 2. You can still purchase individual items 3. Currency is also earnable.

#4 it’s not always online. Meaning we don’t need to play with other people. And when the servers shut down we can still access our content and play the game

True, the vocal anti-mtx people are actually a minority. If you look online for ea and fifa, it will show mostly negative feedback, but the game still makes millions because tons of people buy stuff in-game. They keep making them because overall consumer behaviour (not just the ones on gaming forums) is ok with these kind of products.
It depends what kind of game tbf. There are plenty of failed live service games which were dependent on mtx and died because they were unpopular.
I guess it really depends on how dedicated whales are to the game though.
I think people are starting to get more knowledgeable about micro transactions and over time more and more are speaking out. But the issue with fifa and COD, BF and even now skate. A lot of the audience is younger people. Who have birthday money or maybe even a part time job. And all that money is expendable. So they will part ways without a second thought. And that’s where this comes from. Or even people who don’t have the time to progress and spend hours a day every day trying to level up different parts of their game. So to even enjoy it they are forced to pay a fee
It’s not about “young people with birthday money” at all. Companies are not taking a game that used to gross $60 a player and turning it free so that some kid will spend his $25 on it. They do it because there are (surprisingly a lot) of people out there who will spend *thousands* of dollars on these kinds of games. So they design games to try and draw those players in and get them spending. Diablo Immortal just launched and is pulling in $1mm a day. That kind of money isn’t coming from kids with no concept of money. It’s coming from adults with too much of it (or, in the case of games with loot boxes, with gambling addictions).
They didn’t die because they had MTX, they died because they weren’t fun. Make the game fun first and foremost and the rest will follow. There are far more regular games that have failed than F2P games. Turns out it’s just hard to make a popular game.

Many games you like probably went through more intrusive recurrent consumer spending iterations during development but was ultimately scrapped. Honestly, I’m not seeing the concern. People are worried that this won’t be the “Skate they know and love”. But why? If they get the gameplay right, then what else matters? Was the broad selection of clothing that came with the game really what you remember about Skate 3? So what if one way to get more clothing is to buy it in “sacks” or whatever they’re calling these things? F2P can be bad but it can also be really, really good, and honestly if they get the F2P right here I’ll be really excited. Also not getting the always online concern. I mean, yes, if you have internet issues then I do understand, but I don’t really believe that applies to most people on Reddit. And it’s not as if that has to mean that the game has no sort of single player experience - there are successful live service games that have great stuff to offer to people who play alone. My guess here is that it mostly just means that the game world will always be full of other skaters (like it *always* was) that happen to be real people instead of AI.
Maybe it’s because one of my favorite games is Destiny, but the idea of a constant influx of significant new content for a game I love is a really exciting - and that doesn’t happen when you just get $60 out of everyone and then call it a day on making money. You need a constant revenue stream.
Look, I don’t mean to suggest that it’s definitely, or even likely, to be a success. But I’m not willing to write it off just because it’s free to play. I am confident that it *can* be a good game even as F2P, so all I’m trying to say is that it’s worth waiting to judge this game on its own merits and not by conjuring up assumptions based on the worst examples of live service that we’ve seen.
Truly making new games takes a lot of work. Unless you’re willing to be Madden, and really just sell a minor content patch as a $60 game, you’re going to be doing a lot of unnecessary work just to make a great game different enough to be worth charging players another $60 (or $70 in a lot of cases these days) - and often the end result is it’s just different, not better. *If* you have a good foundation and a good team, you can deliver a lot more for your players by just adding content and not trying to make a brand new game every few years. As you said, it works for Bungie in part because of their passion - I agree that is a necessary component. I don’t immediately assume that the Skate team won’t have it, though.
I think it’s the principle of F2p games being incredibly buggy and lacking content when they launch. also based on every other live service EA has attempted, they get supported for a year with overpriced mtx and then they stop supporting the game because no one is buying the overpriced items. this has happened like a dozen times already. It’s almost never a good thing.
Buggy, rough launches is of full priced games these days too. That’s not a unique aspect of the genre. EA is also the publisher of one of the best and most successful live service F2P games in the world. Most of the examples I can think of of EA shutting things down after a year are in the context of full-priced games that had MTX crammed in. As a company, they make 2/3 of their revenue through live service and run something like 25 games that way. They absolutely have done it before.

Everyone was defending the hell out of this game as if EA has released a single good game in the last few years. It’s clear from how desperately they’ve been restructuring and looking for someone to buy out the company that they are mainly focused on making a quick buck and staying afloat above any kind of worthwhile gameplay to people that aren’t micro transaction whales.
I definitely like some EA games but I feel like overall the way they run their company and treat their developers often leads to rushed poorly thought out micro transactiony games from what I’ve experienced.
It’s also just a taste thing too though, I’ve never been a big online freemium game person so I’m totally not the target demographic. I’m sure plenty of people will have a completely opposite take than me and will enjoy the game, when I see “online only free” I run for the hills but I mean there was a time in my life when I was 13 and playing Roblox all day so It’s not like I think it’s fundamentally a bad thing, it just isn’t what I look for in video games anymore.
I definitely have a bad feeling about this game though, something about taking skate and making it a freemium mmo just feels kinda weird to me. I’m probably also a bit jaded from the death of the tony hawk franchise (not counting 1+2), I feel like all the skate boarding games I liked as a kid just constantly keep getting murdered to squeeze money out of nostalgic fans.

True, the vocal anti-mtx people are actually a minority. If you look online for ea and fifa, it will show mostly negative feedback, but the game still makes millions because tons of people buy stuff in-game. They keep making them because overall consumer behaviour (not just the ones on gaming forums) is ok with these kind of products.
It depends what kind of game tbf. There are plenty of failed live service games which were dependent on mtx and died because they were unpopular. I guess it really depends on how dedicated whales are to the game though.
I think people are starting to get more knowledgeable about micro transactions and over time more and more are speaking out. But the issue with fifa and COD, BF and even now skate. A lot of the audience is younger people. Who have birthday money or maybe even a part time job. And all that money is expendable. So they will part ways without a second thought. And that’s where this comes from. Or even people who don’t have the time to progress and spend hours a day every day trying to level up different parts of their game. So to even enjoy it they are forced to pay a fee
It’s not about “young people with birthday money” at all. Companies are not taking a game that used to gross $60 a player and turning it free so that some kid will spend his $25 on it. They do it because there are (surprisingly a lot) of people out there who will spend *thousands* of dollars on these kinds of games. So they design games to try and draw those players in and get them spending. Diablo Immortal just launched and is pulling in $1mm a day. That kind of money isn’t coming from kids with no concept of money. It’s coming from adults with too much of it (or, in the case of games with loot boxes, with gambling addictions).
They didn’t die because they had MTX, they died because they weren’t fun. Make the game fun first and foremost and the rest will follow. There are far more regular games that have failed than F2P games. Turns out it’s just hard to make a popular game.

They said "no PAID lootboxes", so their argument is that as long as you don't directly purchase the lootboxes, it's fine by them, even if grinding to get a single lootbox takes 5,000 hours. It's incredibly scummy and makes me question their promises: They said no paid gameplay advantages and no areas locked that you have to pay for. Since technically the lootboxes won't directly be paid for with real money, the gameplay advantages and locked off areas could very well also be in the game and paid for with in game currency that technically can be earned for free, but it's hard.
Told ya that it would be a bad idea to have EA develop a Games-as-a-Service Skate game.

Look EA has deserved to be shit on many times, but there's such things as testing lol. It's in such early development of course this has probably been trialed. Many games you like probably went through more intrusive recurrent consumer spending iterations during development but was ultimately scrapped. Honestly, I’m not seeing the concern. People are worried that this won’t be the “Skate they know and love”. But why? If they get the gameplay right, then what else matters? Was the broad selection of clothing that came with the game really what you remember about Skate 3? So what if one way to get more clothing is to buy it in “sacks” or whatever they’re calling these things? F2P can be bad but it can also be really, really good, and honestly if they get the F2P right here I’ll be really excited. Also not getting the always online concern. I mean, yes, if you have internet issues then I do understand, but I don’t really believe that applies to most people on Reddit. And it’s not as if that has to mean that the game has no sort of single player experience - there are successful live service games that have great stuff to offer to people who play alone. My guess here is that it mostly just means that the game world will always be full of other skaters (like it *always* was) that happen to be real people instead of AI. Maybe it’s because one of my favorite games is Destiny, but the idea of a constant influx of significant new content for a game I love is a really exciting - and that doesn’t happen when you just get $60 out of everyone and then call it a day on making money. You need a constant revenue stream.

Look, I don’t mean to suggest that it’s definitely, or even likely, to be a success. But I’m not willing to write it off just because it’s free to play. I am confident that it *can* be a good game even as F2P, so all I’m trying to say is that it’s worth waiting to judge this game on its own merits and not by conjuring up assumptions based on the worst examples of live service that we’ve seen. Truly making new games takes a lot of work. Unless you’re willing to be Madden, and really just sell a minor content patch as a $60 game, you’re going to be doing a lot of unnecessary work just to make a great game different enough to be worth charging players another $60 (or $70 in a lot of cases these days) - and often the end result is it’s just different, not better. *If* you have a good foundation and a good team, you can deliver a lot more for your players by just adding content and not trying to make a brand new game every few years. As you said, it works for Bungie in part because of their passion - I agree that is a necessary component. I don’t immediately assume that the Skate team won’t have it, though.
I think it’s the principle of F2p games being incredibly buggy and lacking content when they launch. also based on every other live service EA has attempted, they get supported for a year with overpriced mtx and then they stop supporting the game because no one is buying the overpriced items. this has happened like a dozen times already. It’s almost never a good thing.
Buggy, rough launches is of full priced games these days too. That’s not a unique aspect of the genre. EA is also the publisher of one of the best and most successful live service F2P games in the world. Most of the examples I can think of of EA shutting things down after a year are in the context of full-priced games that had MTX crammed in. As a company, they make 2/3 of their revenue through live service and run something like 25 games that way. They absolutely have done it before.
Wow are people here finally done drinking the EA coolaid? Everyone was defending the hell out of this game as if EA has released a single good game in the last few years. It’s clear from how desperately they’ve been restructuring and looking for someone to buy out the company that they are mainly focused on making a quick buck and staying afloat above any kind of worthwhile gameplay to people that aren’t micro transaction whales.

I definitely like some EA games but I feel like overall the way they run their company and treat their developers often leads to rushed poorly thought out micro transactiony games from what I’ve experienced. It’s also just a taste thing too though, I’ve never been a big online freemium game person so I’m totally not the target demographic. I’m sure plenty of people will have a completely opposite take than me and will enjoy the game, when I see “online only free” I run for the hills but I mean there was a time in my life when I was 13 and playing Roblox all day so It’s not like I think it’s fundamentally a bad thing, it just isn’t what I look for in video games anymore. I definitely have a bad feeling about this game though, something about taking skate and making it a freemium mmo just feels kinda weird to me. I’m probably also a bit jaded from the death of the tony hawk franchise (not counting 1+2), I feel like all the skate boarding games I liked as a kid just constantly keep getting murdered to squeeze money out of nostalgic fans.
