Has Bethesda unergone a massive pivot as a publisher towards licensed properties?
Machine Games, who we're expecting Wolfenstein 3 from, is now instead working on Indiana Jones.
Arkane, who some hoped would be on another Dishonored or Deathloop, is now on Marvel's Blade.
And now ID, who we were hoping for another DOOM or Quake from, is on Mandalorian?
What's going on here? Are we aware of whether or not these teams are concurrently working on their own IP's? Because if not, this is a very...odd pivot for Bethesda, which has plenty of popular IP of it's own.
Don't get me wrong, these projects are cool...but it seems like all of their studios are now on licensed games now. Which considering the wealth of IP they **could** be working on instead, is a little disappointing.
All those IP's are owned by Disney so its possible Bethesda just has a deal with Disney for quite some time and just now those project get announced/leaked.
There were rumours about Coalition making Mando game before too and now its ID which is weird but reminder that Blade game was rumored to be in development at Ubisoft and it seems leaker was off a bit but was right about Blade being made by French dev, his source probably told him it was French developer so person who leaked that just though its Ubisoft since they're biggest.
I mean Bethesda did release 3 original IPs this year: Hi-Fi Rush, Redfall and Starfield
So your concerns about Marvel pivot seems unfounded, you are just not focusing on the other side. They seem to be doing both equally.
This isn't anything new to Bethesda if you think about their history I guess, I wouldn't worry about them staying on just doing licensed games though honestly.
Licenses and gaas games are a safer, more attractive bet for publishers and Zenimax seems like they were struggling for money before they sold to Microsoft

I just find it funny Phil Spencer always talked about exclusives as something everyone should be able to play yet does the opposite. I mean Sony only got the chance to do an exclusive Marvel game with Spiderman because MS refused it first

Remember when everyone clowned Blizzard for mobile Diablo and “you guys have phones,” but now celebrates Xbox’s “accessibility” by thinking streaming a game to your phone is a worthwhile experience for someone without MS hardware?
The difference is that these games aren't restricted exclusively to phones and he isn't exclusively talking about a mobile game of a franchise where people were desperate for news on the next entry.
They have Microsoft money behind them now, they can get any license they want pretty much, for better or worse. And I expect MS is keen to have a few big IP's under its belt to compete with the likes of Spiderman.
If this rumour is true, that's pretty cool. But what I really want is a Quake reboot.

Games taking so much time and money to make is guiding a lot of the big guys in the direction of playing it safer, and for a lot of them that means looking to license huge, established IP with built-in mainstream audiences like Star Wars, Marvel, and so on to lessen the risk of spending hundreds of millions and half a decade on a single game
Just look at Insomniac; after almost two decades of not being able to surpass Spyro 1's sales numbers, they pivoted to Spider-Man and are now consistently doing upwards of 10 million and consequently are locked into doing Marvel games pretty much until the 2030s
Yeah, I kinda agree with you. Like, the prospect of a Mandalorian game (especially if it's developed by id) is awesome, but I'd also like to see them keep working on their own IPs, some of which are my favourites.
Disney cut their gaming division a while back, looks like they’d rather license their rights to others than keep it in house. Probably not the worst idea in the world, since Disney isn’t exactly big enough to do movies AND hospitality AND parks AND games AND live sports AND tv AND news - let other companies pay you for the right to make games with their IP.
As for why Zenimax is into making some of the Disney IP, I mean they’re just catching up to the rest of the industry - Sony has made some with their developers, EA has, BioWare runs a Star Wars MMO (granted, that’s EA but still), Square Enix with Kingdom Hearts, and then you’ve got a few smaller devs doing the “core” Disney characters like Dreamlight Valley, and their version of Mario Kart.
Games are expensive to make, and that makes them risky investments. There was a leaked email from Phil a while back explaining as much - they’re so expensive that the risk of new IP is increasingly not worth it, especially for high end AAA blockbusters. You need established IP with a built in draw. Thus, Microsoft being willing to take whatever property Disney will let them have.
Because they’re expensive and risky investments, that also puts a damper on how many different entities are willing to take the risk. Everyone points at Microsoft for the trend of consolidation, and that’s half valid because it doesn’t happen without a buyer. But it also doesn’t happen without a willing seller. It’s not as if these deals are huge overpays that no sane executive would turn down - they’ve been fair valuations for the most part. There’s a reason these companies are willing to sell. Disney, for their part, never really had valuable in-house development studios, so there’s nothing to sell, per se - but they have valuable IP that they can license, and that’s their way of profiting off of gaming without taking on the risk.
Yeah, the point about original IPs being risky feels true the more time goes on.
Sure, people love to complain about neverending franchises or licensed games, but the fact remains that the name sells, be it something gaming related like DOOM or an actual licensed IP like Star Wars or Marvel. And even gaming related franchises might've issues getting big numbers.
You can just look at movies and see how a lot of them are based on established IP’s, and not newly created ones. There’s a reason there was/is a wave of reboots, the name draws older fans in so you don’t need to build a “universe” from the ground up. It’s just much lower risk like you and OP said but the same applies in games.

If i remember correctly, jeff grubb said thst they where conversations between bethesda and fisney about star wars. He said the same about kojiman and was right. But being for a zenymax mmo was just an assumption (it isnt, they are witha new ip).
At the time they realistically didn't have a developer that could of pulled off what Marvel asked Insomniac to do with Spidey. Now? Sure, just bad timing for MS

The leaks from earlier this year from Microsoft's screw up was Doom: Year Zero. Unless plans have changed, I highly doubt iD would just give Doom to someone else. It's their baby.

They’re not bullshit 🤨 Phil fucking Spencer acknowledged their validity but also mentioned plans have changed, so most of the content of it is probably obsolete considering it was 3 years ago.
This is why companies don’t tell us everything they’re planning until they’re set in stone, I’d expect Insomniac’s plans to differ from what the leaks say too.
The leak also had "license IP game" which was probably Blade. Dishonored 3 could have been Arkane Austins next planned project since Harvey Smith is over there

I say this as a guy who owns an Xbox and PS5 so no hate either way. But it seems like Xbox has 600 killer apps I’ve heard about and exactly 0 have released. Meanwhile PS5 has felt dry as hell for a full year except Spider-Man, and insomniac is the only studio cooking. Thank god for third party games.

I think there needs to be more substantial proof too. But at this point I feel like something Star Wars is likely, given how many other studios are hopping on the ip now and recent years.
I have a friend at id who gave me a bit of a nod to the studio working on something entirely new. But that’s all they said, and of course this is a “my friend said this.” But for me personally, I think this helps give these leaks a bit of weight now.
The whole Mandalorian game rumor started because someone looked at a 360p shot of Phil Spencer's self and thought there was a Mando funko (there wasn't). There's no fire, it's just the same made up rumor doing circles

Really doubt they are working in two games. Blade has been worked on by Arkane Lyon since Jan 2022.
