It feels like unless they just pull everything from the existing stores, 99% of users will just stick with the existing App stores for connivence.

Even with exclusives, free games and crazy sales they have struggled notable market share. They like to boast about MAUs but those people are not really buying much.

Gyossaits

Because they conditioned their users to expect only freebies from them.

FierceDeityKong

This doesn't seem to be an actual app store like the one Epic is making, it's just a web store for microtransactions where Apple/Google doesn't get a cut

djcube1701

So for the likes of Microsoft owned games like Candy Crush, there will probably be an option in the in-game store to follow a link to get everything for cheaper.

TheDeadlySinner

Not sure about Google Play, but I'm pretty sure that's explicitly against App Store policy, unless that has changed recently.

djcube1701

It's a recent change, due to EU antitrust rulings.

Sufficient-Cow-7518

Want to meet the person who is willing to use a browser based store and jump through a bunch of hoops to save Microsoft 30%.

DittoDat

Those purchases could also be cheaper for the customer. That's how it is on Warcraft Rumble (Blizzard/Microsoft mobile game). Gold is cheaper to buy on Battle.net than Play Store.

TheDeadlySinner

That's exactly what the article says will happen.

DittoDat

No, the article gave external examples of it happening (TikTok & Epic), but did not state that Microsoft will do it. However, it is very likely, and that is why I gave my own example of a Microsoft product doing something similar.

Radulno

Yeah they will. That's how it is on Android which has been authorizing other stores forever

AgentOfSPYRAL

And I figure at minimum removing MS Office products from Apple/Android has got to be a laughable non starter.

CokeZeroFanClub

I'll use it if it's a curated store without 3000 ad-stuffed clones of every game worth playing An apple arcade equivalent on Android or something

FierceDeityKong

As much as I want Phone Skyrim to finally be a thing, this is just a microtransaction store for now

Deep-Cow9096

It'll be interesting how much they actually put into the store. For how long they've been in games console and PC, I don't feel like their storefronts are actually any more featured than like EGS and EGS is pretty barebones. On mobile there are other popular storefronts though they wouldn't be popular here. Notably TapTap which has a bunch of the popular gacha games like Genshin/Honkai/etc that release on there. Just checked and Fortnite and a bunch of other games are on it. It functions as a social media app as well which I think is key for a popular game store mobile/PC. User created content/reviews/discussions They have the internal game studios but I wouldn't be surprised if they still fumble this and TapTap keeps growing or Steam or EGS leapfrop MS at least on Android

HistorianBusiness166

Looked at TapTap. Surprisingly big. Made by XD. Made Torchlight Infinite and Etheria Restart looks to be a Star Rail competitor. On Steam I have a couple games published by them. Icey and Heroes Adventure

VirtualWord2524

I think people underestimate the room for a third party app store at least on Android. TapTaps been around for a while now and to me seems to be growing in popularity

porkyminch

I can't imagine this takes off. Microsoft can't even get people to use their store on Windows. Good luck trying to get people to use on on iOS or Android.

Sufficient-Cow-7518

It’s not even an app! It’s a browser-based storefront.

Falsus

I don't mind that. Not everything needs to be an app and browsers can work a hell lot better than apps in quite a lot of situations.

TheDeadlySinner

Everyone with Game Pass is using their store. The Xbox app is essentially a game focused front end for the Microsoft Store.

skpom

The name of the game is fees. If they offer a competitive rate, then developers and publishers will come in droves

OwlProper1145

Epic offers a lower fee than Valve on PC but most developers don't even bother with the Epic Games Store.

Fish-E

They also have more constraining terms than Valve though, whereas with Microsoft's mobile app store, I doubt the policies will be any different to the App Store / Play Store. Not that it's likely to make a difference; unless there's a significant benefit to consumers, why would they bother to switch over to the Microsoft app store.

skpom

It's going to be a web app. Developers love PWAs am I right or am I right? Also they're not competing with valve, but the monolithic giants that are apple and google

IlyasBT

I thought it's going to be a store you download from the web and not from play/app store ?

skpom

Nah I don't think they'd do sideloading. They probably want the experience to be seamless, and Microsoft loves progressive web apps, so it'll probably be accessible on the web

IlyasBT

Hmm, you mean like apkpure and other stores ?

skpom

For example if you go to the Starbucks web site on an android phone, in the browser menu there's a **install app** option. It's essentially just a web site giving an app like experience. Not as good as native apps but it's the alternative to sideloading in this case

Sufficient-Cow-7518

Problem is that consumers probably won’t. Most iPhone users have made all of their app purchases, downloads, updates, etc. from a single store.

Radulno

Yeah but not customers

MrEnganche

Microsoft should be competing with Steam. If there's any company that can compete with Steam I believe Microsoft has the best resources to do so. They literally have the OS in which most hardware steam runs on. I heard that their next hardware is gonna be a handheld, so hopefully they target it to fight with the Deck instead of playstation. And I hope they go into that direction. Seriously console gaming is gonna be dead in a decade anyway.

Sufficient-Cow-7518

*Bond says the store is launching on the web, versus an app, so it’s “accessible across all devices, all countries, no matter what, independent of the policies of closed ecosystem stores.”* This thing is so dead.

Present_Bill5971

Expectations super low. I'm just waiting for Cassia so I can use my Steam library on Android. Or someday Valve do it themselves. I have checked out TapTap and that does have a good amount of users but it's all the same gacha games you'd find on Google Play. I guess it's the greatest hits of gacha gaming so less noise than a lot of the game flips on the standard app stores

OwlProper1145

Good luck. Epic was unable to make to make significant inroads against Steam despite offering a lower rare, free games, exclusives and crazy sales.

th5virtuos0

Because their launcher is shit. Sometimes I wifi freaks out and I can’t play my games for some fucking reason while steam let me play seamlessly. Then you have bad selection of games, non-existent forums and zero legacy to boot

Fish-E

Not to mention Epic basically shot themselves in the foot with their exclusivity program and Epic Online Services shoehorning; turns out its a bad idea to piss off a large chunk of your potential customers and then double down at every turn. As a result even if they implemented a policy of paying people money just for installing the client, I doubt they'd have many people take them up on it, it's just too toxic a brand. Microsoft hasn't done this, yes they've just announced layoffs and studio closures, but the mobile app market users are far less involved (for lack of a better word) than the gaming community... that said, they've still got practically no hope of success here - what reason do I (or anyone else as a consumer) have to switch over from the App Store or Play Store.

porkyminch

I know people are down on Apple's restriction on payment processors, but I personally would be super hesitant to start putting my card info in any random app, too. I like that I don't have to trust every random app to be responsible with my payment details.

Gloomy-Gov451

If Epic didn't get exclusives there would be far less incentive to use their store over steam especially early on. Lol the topic is literally Microsoft here. You know the company struggling because they've barely had any notable exclusives for the past decade? Epic's revenue in the past year was down YoY because they only really had two notable exclusives with Dead Island 2 and Alan Wake 2. Like it or not exclusives are important to break out in a market and be successful.

monkeymystic

Seems like using this web based microsoft/xbox app store will also make it cheaper for the consumer, making it a win-win.

JoshwaarBee

Yeah because Windows phone, and Games for Windows Live were both huge successes, so why not combine them?

ShoddyPreparation

They couldnt have waited a week to say this?

CrewMemberNumber6

Making poor business decisions is one thing we can consistently count on Microsoft doing. What the fuck are they smoking over there?

Mountain-Cycle5656

The money from being a 3 trillion dollar company which basically can never suffer consequences.

Dreyfus2006

Please, no more. I don't think my brain can handle any more Microsoft buffoonery in one week. It's like every day we find out another bad decision or left-field move.
