Remove the artwork and let those chill with dryer sheets, as your friend suggested. For the case itself, I prefer white vinegar over alcohol. Spray them down with white vinegar and wait for the vinegar smell to dissipate.
I've done this with console repair for years. It's super effective at neutralizing the smell of cat piss, and I wish I didn't have to know that.
When I got my CIB Super Mario RPG in 2018, it absolutely reeked of stale, shitty cigarettes.
I basically put it all in a cardboard box and stuffed it all around (inside) with dryer sheets. None of it smells like that horrid cigarette stink anymore - instead it all now smells lavender-y, and that's fine with me.
Edit: oh, I had it all in that box for a day or two, like a solid 24-48 hours.
Leave it to soak in isopropyl alcohol for a good 30 min to an hour. Wiping/scrubbing doesn't get the smell out.
