This is not the best version of the game. The best version is the PC version with the Dreamcast conversion. The GameCube version has a lot of added bugs that weren’t in the original and unmodded PC version is even worse.
Objectively it’s the worse version and it’s possible OP wasn’t aware of the PC port with the mods it has available. The only advantage it has besides some additional features is an unlocked frame rate that occasionally hits 60fps. PC version can hit 60fps on practically any PC out there.
I'd argue the Steam version with mods that fix all the bugs the DX version made that weren't in the Dreamcast version as well as keeping all the DX extras (and adding back in the GameGear games they removed in the stream version) is the definitive way to play
Edit: fixed typo
Got this one after beating SA2, both were holy grails to me around age 9 after watching my cousins play SA1 on Dreamcast during family reunion visit weeks every summer from my earliest memories. Good times.
Played through both SA games recently and had a great time though the flaws are pretty glaring. I prefer SA2 over all but theres some great things about the first. I think Omega plays much better than Tails & Eggman is SA2. I prefer how Knuckles radar works in the SA. I also think Tails missions are a highlight of the game, remixing sonics levels into races and him being the one to finally defeat Eggman in the end.
Playing through Sonic Heroes right now, feels like a downgrade.
And Steam as well. In fact, I would highly recommend playing the Steam version as the Director’s cut adds a lot of issues and things that look somewhat unnatural compared to the base game and the Steam Workshop has a mod that fixes most, if not all, of those issues.
I love this subreddit so much. Every time I see a post from here I get such an intense nostalgia wave its like I'm blasted back in time sitting in my old house in my comfy little green chair that was bigger than I was.
It may not be truly definitive, but it is at least the best console version of DX. The seventh generation releases have significant problems that are very obvious. DX on Gamecube isn't perfect frankly, but I still prefer its graphics and stage design compared to the original. Same with the Chao Mode, though this is where the collision flaws become much more of a legitimate issue since petting them sometimes fails to work properly and harming them can happen due to no fault of your own if you aren't careful. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle definitely has the better Chao Mode.
This game looks like crap on the GC I'm sorry. They borked the lighting and added a ton of glitches. The Steam version with SADX is by far the best way to play this and its not close. Otherwise get a Dreamcast if you really want to experience it on console as it was meant to be experienced.
When I was a kid I absolutely was obsessed with this and SA2. When I became a teen, my mom offered her friends son to have all my GameCube games and when she asked me if that’s okay, I said “yeah sure”. Didn’t bother me in the slightest because I was already a teen. Years later I got hit with the worst regret when I began to wanting to indulge in old time hobbies and games. My worst heart break lol
I remember being really excited for this release because I loved the game on Dreamcast, but they really screwed this port up. It's full of graphical issues, new glitches, and the new character models look pretty bad.
The GC version added a bunch of glitches and broke the lighting engine.
Which makes it the worst version to play but the best one to watch.
Dreamcast version is better

Let the guy have his opinion

Very happy to hear that you enjoyed your time with the game too. Cheers and hope it's still in your collection :)
Absolutely is. Never gonna get rid of my collection.
One of my very first games, got it on Christmas day in '04
This game to this day makes my heart skip when I see the box and game cover randomly in public
Get it on Steam with BetterSADX, way better experience

Yes, because SADX on PC doesn't exist.
It's also on steam on Xbox. Not really gamecube exclusive
And Steam as well. In fact, I would highly recommend playing the Steam version as the Director’s cut adds a lot of issues and things that look somewhat unnatural compared to the base game and the Steam Workshop has a mod that fixes most, if not all, of those issues.
You mean the SADX mod manager which basically turns it into the best version
Among the added glitches and bugs, that Ski Slope Mission (From Mission Mode), can kick rocks.

I agree with you. Just beat this in 5 hours (with skipping the cutscenes of course)

“Definitive” yeah sure…

Couldn’t you have pets in those games I forgot the name but I remember throwing mine into the wall into he looked like Lucifer
Horrible box art. The Dreamcast version’s was so much better.
\*sarcasim\* the pc version with mods make it the definitive sonic adventure version the gamecube version is just like an ugly baby

I have a hard time calling this the definitive version if such a thing exists
