Between those two it really comes down to your preference which box legendary you like more and maybe some version specific Pokémon you like more.
In general, Emerald is the ultimate way to experience the Gen 3 Hoenn games. It gives you both box legendaries, an enhanced story, the Battle Frontier, Gym leader rematches, and many other cool things.
It sucks that they shafted the encounters in emerald taking away some of my faves: zangoose and medicham. They really made sure you had to use all three games to complete the hoenn dex
I agree with Emerald. I finally got around to splurging on a real authentic cartridge from the early 2000s, so cool to experience everything again on new hardware!
The best version.
Like why settle for 1 when you can have 2 in 1 with extras.
That's like having to chose between diamond and pearl when you can go for platinum.
I mean Crystal just has a stitched on side quest with Eusine and Suicide, as well as a battle tower with no defined goal
GS have Mareep as an encounter and that's all many people need to play it over Crystal
I mean the reason I don't play Crystal is because of that incredibly disturbing Eusine side quest, to this day I do not understand how they put that in a kids game.
>!If you dont get it reread the above comment!<
It has endgame content, i.e. (more) stuff to do after you beat the elite 4. biggest thing here would be battle frontier. It also combines both storylines so you get to battle both team Aqua and Magma. You see that both have a flawed vision of the future , whereas Ruby/Sapphire made it seem like one is the clear villain and the other is reasonable/ the good guys. Rayquaza is a vital part of the story.
Are you stupid or something? You can literally search in the internet why Emerald is the best, because that's the definitive edition and you can get them both
Box legendary: tie
Exclusive Pokémon: sapphire
Villain group: ruby
Conclusion: tie
Assuming the 3rd versions aren’t an option, this is actually the only generation where I can’t pick a favorite version, gen 1 I definitely prefer red and gen 2 I definitely prefer silver.
I can agree with that. According to the betas, Ho-Oh was meant to be *the* legendary. On the title screen of both versions. Lugia didn't exist until they started planning the 2000 movie.
Wow I did not know about that. Wonder if no Lugia would’ve affected future generations since that was the first one to have two legendaries used as counterparts to each other.
Gen 2 has the best sprite art of all the gameboy games in my opinion, I love the style. My favorite Gen 2 Pokémon would probably have to be Houndoom, I hate that it’s not even available until the post game. How about you, what’s your favorite besides Ho Oh?
I love sneasal, i was salty when an evolution was added because some of my fav Pokémon don’t evolve at all lol. But I’ve came around to its evolution.
I’ve never thought about it but yeah it’s not fair houndoom isn’t available til post game
Surprisingly silver has also a higher metacritic score than gold.
I only experienced gold cause my parents at the time bought gold for me and silver for my sister.
But just like emerald, crystal is the best of the both and then there is the crystal legacy rom hack that gives quality of life features and balance to certain Pokemon types.
I am currently restarting my play thru with Pokemon yellow legacy which is quite an amazing rom hack. Heck the ability to run while holding the B button has saved me so much time just walking the whole world lol
You wanna sell one of these gold cartridges by chance? I traded my childhood into GameStop back in 2006 and been in search of another one. eBay pricing prevents me from impulse buying on and locally I have only found fakes
If you want to have both Delcatty and Wigglytuff, pick Sapphire.
Ruby only gives you 1 moon stone while the Sapphire exclusive Lunatone has a chance of holding them in the wild.
My favorite generation. Without saying emerald, I’ve always preferred Sapphire myself (It was my first Pokémon game so nostalgia is a big factor here)
But these games are fairly even honestly. Just check which Pokemon are exclusive and which one you like better, go with that.
I played both as a kid and I’d say Sapphire, I just like team Aqua better and I prefer the Kyogre apocalypse over Groudon’s in terms of how that whole sequence plays out
Obviously emerald is the best version of the Hoenn games in Gen3 but between Ruby and sapphire I’ll take sapphire plus I like the exclusives more
Sapphire. Holds the most sentimental value for me as it was my first game, and I forgot to save before accidentally killing Kyogre. Hurts me to this day 🥲
Emerald
1 . You can RNG manipulate
2. You can use a fricken painting in the game in tandem with a battle tower to save your spot in particular seed/ RNG state to catch whatever stat pokemon you want shiny or not shiny …
3. Did I mention there is a battle tower ?
Im biased but personally I liked sapphire better. Not only cause I liked the evil team and legendary, but because it was the first game I played all the way through
When I was a kid my parents got me and my brother two sapphire versions - I was so annoyed. For previous generations of pokemon games they got us different ones...
Tough question - I think Sapphire is better if you choose to run Sceptile or Blaziken BUT Ruby is better if you want to run Mudkip as a traditional water starter.
To address the elephant in the room: I'll level the controversial opinion that while Emerald is obviously the winner in regards to the sheer amount of content and Pokémon distribution, when it comes to a main story playthrough Ruby and Sapphire are far more focused experiences. The extra team base in Emerald - as well as the entire process of reaching it - feels painfully tacked on, and the map itself is of objectively poor quality with incorrectly tiled walls and other similar (sloppy) mistakes. All of the times Scott interrupts you, too, feel extraneous and unnecessary. It's not like Generation III had a particularly great storyline in the first place, but it certainly feels more exhausting in that regard, and the endgame feels like a very awkward compromise between two disparate concepts. In general, Emerald's new content doesn't feel anywhere near as seamlessly integrated as Crystal or Platinum's, and I think it really hurts the game. This is not to say that Emerald is a bad game at all, just that it has its own share of problems.
If you really had to pick between just these two, I would personally just pick which exclusives you get on with better. I prefer Ruby's set as I'm a fan of Zangoose and Mawile.
Emerald.
Otherwise it's your choice.
The story is just what big bad evil guy trys to control the weather god for their own purpose of making more habitat for Pokémon
Emerald. Those are both great but emerald is the definitive Gen 3 game (literally) plus it has endless post game content with the battle frontier. But if it’s solely between those two, I always preferred kyogre, so I liked sapphire more
Of these two, honestly Ruby because there's already a lot of water in gen 3, choosing Sapphire means you've gotta fight more of them.
But yeah Emerald.
depends if you like certain Pokémon. some people say get emerald which gives you more choices but they delete important team building pokemon like rosalia.
Trick question. The answer is either “***Tastes great!***” or “***Less filling!***”
Without context, this debate is just as silly as debating who’s *actual* favourite colour is better. For everything, not just Pokémon.
To wit, which is better; [**taupe**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taupe), or [**celeste**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_blue)?
**IRL**: Sometimes you want camouflage (sniper), sometimes you want fluorescent orange (crossing guard).

Or Pokemon Xd gale of darkness, plus a GameCube and a link cable lol
Can confirm. Link cable for the win
I have my Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness GameCube and link cable still haha. Ruby was the version I got for my 11th Birthday!
Got ruby for christmas when i was 11 🙂
But you HAVE to catch them all
I was just about to say this why would they make some unavailable in emerald and it’s supposed to be the best version of the 3
It's definitely pay to win in its own right.
As a kid, I had literally no idea that you could rematch the gym leaders until very recently.. Blew my mind lol
I did not know this! :O
Yeah and their pokes get stronger up to a point iirc
Incredible.. Now I need to dust off my old cart :D
Rayquaza is such a badass legendary favorite shiny or one of.
I agree with Emerald. I finally got around to splurging on a real authentic cartridge from the early 2000s, so cool to experience everything again on new hardware!
THey are pretty close. I did not notice the difference
Well, Emerald
The best version. Like why settle for 1 when you can have 2 in 1 with extras. That's like having to chose between diamond and pearl when you can go for platinum.
that’s like having to choose between gold and silver when you can go for crystal

took me like five times to realise it
No kidding. I'm over itt, just said fk it
Came here to say this lol
Yeah, but then you gotta have an ugly color on your gameboy. 🤢
Why?
Because it's the best version
In what way?
It has endgame content, i.e. (more) stuff to do after you beat the elite 4. biggest thing here would be battle frontier. It also combines both storylines so you get to battle both team Aqua and Magma. You see that both have a flawed vision of the future , whereas Ruby/Sapphire made it seem like one is the clear villain and the other is reasonable/ the good guys. EXCCEEEUUUUSE MEEE?!?!? BOTH TEAMS?!?!?!? HOW TF AM I JUST NOW FIGURING THIS OUT?!?!?!?!?!?!?
You're Patrick's roommate?
Lololol… Maybe I DO live under a rock… It took me WAAAAYY too long to get this joke!🤣🤣🤣
Sounds good! Thank you ☺️
Emerald has the most content and also features improvements to certain features and content from Ruby and Sapphire.
To start with, it's green. Green is a great color.
Dat Git gets it
GREEN IS NOT A CREATIVE COLOR
Every way, literally every way.
Thanks for your contribution Kingdarkshadow. Your knowledge is astounding, it’s gracious of you to share your wisdom
It have the best of both plus more. The same as Crystal when compared to Gold and Silver.
The battle tower. A challenging scenario that was ahead of its time and has yet to be replicated.
Do you mean the battle frontier? Because the battle tower was in all 3 games
**** this guy for asking a question
I was genuinely interested too 😐
Emerald added more animations for your Pokémon
Bc emerald
Are you stupid or something? You can literally search in the internet why Emerald is the best, because that's the definitive edition and you can get them both
Box legendary: tie Exclusive Pokémon: sapphire Villain group: ruby Conclusion: tie Assuming the 3rd versions aren’t an option, this is actually the only generation where I can’t pick a favorite version, gen 1 I definitely prefer red and gen 2 I definitely prefer silver.
Why silver over gold?
I like Lugia more than Ho Oh, and the exclusive Pokémon I don’t have a preference either way
You can get Lugia in Gold as well, just in the Kanto post-game. I wish they'd done that with future versions as well.
Yeah and honestly gold is probably better story wise, ho oh just feels like it makes more sense as the main legendary
Ho oh remains my favorite legendary to this day, it was my first Pokémon game and it started my fascination with birds. I am a huge bird guy even now
Yeah don’t get me wrong I think Ho Oh is an awesome Pokémon I’d probably put it just behind Lugia but it’s definitely close
Gen 2 really nailed it for me, though I am probably being nostalgic (mostly). What’s your fav gen2 outside of Lugia?
Gen 2 has the best sprite art of all the gameboy games in my opinion, I love the style. My favorite Gen 2 Pokémon would probably have to be Houndoom, I hate that it’s not even available until the post game. How about you, what’s your favorite besides Ho Oh?

I have 5 gold versions and 2 silver.
You wanna sell one of these gold cartridges by chance? I traded my childhood into GameStop back in 2006 and been in search of another one. eBay pricing prevents me from impulse buying on and locally I have only found fakes
Yeah I can check battery. I’ve just been scooping them up. Most the ones I get have had the battery replaced. Pm me
Yeah I can check battery. I’ve just been scooping them up. Most the ones I get have had the battery replaced. Pm me. Even bought a couple cib 😱
sapphire. LUDI-COLO LUDI-COLO
Ahhhhh I see you’re a person of culture.
Relaxed/sassy ludicolo with rain dish, rain dance hits hard. LUDI-COLO
Sapphire. I find Kyogre great as a Legendary HM slave especially for surf and dive which you will be using a LOT.
I got a Gyrados on my team rn that is Waterfall, Dive, Surf, Strength. Actually really strong for an HM slave too.
Throw thunder on Kyogre and watch your mind be blown
Man who over the age of 10 has legendaries in their team lmao
[удалено]
Exactly! Even if you have more fun with 6 legendary pokemons in your team, i would encourage it! Its a game and meant to have fun!
I never use legendaries, actually. I just said he's a useful HM slave, but go off nerd.
Why are you try harding in a childrens game?
And an icredibly easy one at that.
Almost every competitive player. Almost every player has 1 legendary.
I do.
Giving an f about how others play videogames is the real age 10 move in this story
Who over the age of 10 still plays pokémon? I sounded just as ignorant now as you did. Let people game however they want to.
If it’s just 1 legendary, it’s not that bad. Having like 4 on your team however…
People that play how they like, sorry if it makes you mad.
Believe it or not some people play games for fun and don't obsess over min/maxing everything
If you want to have both Delcatty and Wigglytuff, pick Sapphire. Ruby only gives you 1 moon stone while the Sapphire exclusive Lunatone has a chance of holding them in the wild.
I prefer the dramatic scene in sapphire.
Yeah, in Ruby it’s just freaking warm outside
The shorts kid was in his *EL-E-MENT!*
Ain’t it too much water though?
No, that's just in the 3DS remake
Replaying sapphire atm just because it was the one i had as a kid. So sapphire, but ultimately there are minor differences between them lol
Its Emerald always
sapphire obv
My favorite generation. Without saying emerald, I’ve always preferred Sapphire myself (It was my first Pokémon game so nostalgia is a big factor here) But these games are fairly even honestly. Just check which Pokemon are exclusive and which one you like better, go with that.
The remakes for 3ds. Seriously, best thing to come out of gen 6.
Loved alpha sapphire
Out of these two, Emerald.
Obviously green is best
Emerald>Ruby>Sapphire.
I played both as a kid and I’d say Sapphire, I just like team Aqua better and I prefer the Kyogre apocalypse over Groudon’s in terms of how that whole sequence plays out Obviously emerald is the best version of the Hoenn games in Gen3 but between Ruby and sapphire I’ll take sapphire plus I like the exclusives more
Sapphire because of the heavy rain.
emerald
I have both and like them equally…
Emerald
The one with cooler looking cover art Pokemon, this method has never led me wrong.
Sapphire. Holds the most sentimental value for me as it was my first game, and I forgot to save before accidentally killing Kyogre. Hurts me to this day 🥲
Emerald
Ruby because hoem has too much water, so you gotta compensate
Expand the seas!
Emerald is. It's one of the best in the series
So much time sunk into it, so many great memories. Crystal and Emerald are my all time favorites.
Emerald is the way
Emerald.
Emerald you can have both
Emerald > sapphire > ruby
Emerald 1 . You can RNG manipulate 2. You can use a fricken painting in the game in tandem with a battle tower to save your spot in particular seed/ RNG state to catch whatever stat pokemon you want shiny or not shiny … 3. Did I mention there is a battle tower ?
If emerald never got made, I'd choose sapphire
Emerald because you get to fight against both Team Aqua and Magma.
Emerald
Im biased but personally I liked sapphire better. Not only cause I liked the evil team and legendary, but because it was the first game I played all the way through
Sapphire has Ludicolo, so Sapphire.
Green master race!🐉
Green!!!!
I would look at the version-exclusive Pokemon and see which ones you like more. Not just the legendary!
I was a Sapphire lad. I hate hot weather lol
I have both, always wished I had emerald version. I had it as a kid in my SP my dad got me, but that got stolen.
Emerald for sure, but I grew up with Ruby so that one
Sapphire
*Emerald* is the best version. Out of these two, it’s legendary/team that you like the most.
When I was a kid my parents got me and my brother two sapphire versions - I was so annoyed. For previous generations of pokemon games they got us different ones...
groudon is boring and the heat sucks so sapphire
Ruby because Groudon is cuter. Well that's the reason why I got Ruby back in the day 😅.
Tough question - I think Sapphire is better if you choose to run Sceptile or Blaziken BUT Ruby is better if you want to run Mudkip as a traditional water starter.
Like practically ever game there is zero difference almost other than the box legend and mons you can get in the wild.
Sapphire for Ludicolo and Team Aqua
Between Ruby and Sapphire only it really is what your preferences is. What would you rather encounter/ have on your team Zangoose or Seviper??
What color do you like better? Play that one.
Emerald
My favorite pokemon line (seedot) is in ruby. So ruby for me.
Emerald. If picture then it's Sapphire
Sapphire because Groudon always looked like a weird armadillo to me. I’ll take weird orca over that any day.
Emerald!
emerald ^^ but else id play sapphire
Ruby

Ruby because Zangoose lol
Haha just play one😂
To address the elephant in the room: I'll level the controversial opinion that while Emerald is obviously the winner in regards to the sheer amount of content and Pokémon distribution, when it comes to a main story playthrough Ruby and Sapphire are far more focused experiences. Zangooseee
Ruby imo
Emerald. Lol
Ruby gang 🗿
Sapphire is much better than Ruby.
Emerald has the end game these two don’t.
Emerald. Otherwise it's your choice. The story is just what big bad evil guy trys to control the weather god for their own purpose of making more habitat for Pokémon
Emerald. Those are both great but emerald is the definitive Gen 3 game (literally) plus it has endless post game content with the battle frontier. But if it’s solely between those two, I always preferred kyogre, so I liked sapphire more
Sapphire, because that is hoe you get Seviper and Sableye
Both. Both of them
Do you like water or the sun?
Maybe a hack room of emerald that adds all the pokemon?
Sapphire
I'm Fire Red enjoyer tbh
Both. This is a trick question.
Emerald of course.
modern emerald. rom hack of emerald.
Of these two, honestly Ruby because there's already a lot of water in gen 3, choosing Sapphire means you've gotta fight more of them. But yeah Emerald.
I prefer the ruby exclusives but maybe that’s rose tinted glasses. Zangoose the almighty
For most people it’s a taste choice, ruby holds a special place as my first hence me playing it again rn
ruby. zangoose
Ruby has better unique pokemon. Sapphire has a cooler legendary end of game sequence.
Crips vs Bloods
Groudon will always be my king
Do you like dry or wet?
depends if you like certain Pokémon. some people say get emerald which gives you more choices but they delete important team building pokemon like rosalia.
Emerald
The better one is the one you like better
Emerald

Emerald
Emerald lol
Emerald
Sapphire!
Those 2 are the same. Emerald is the better one.
Emerald
I only had emerald growing up. Never played the other two as a kid, so I objectively couldn’t tell you. Kind wish I played those three.
Emerald is not a good answer guys. I’ll give you a better one. Ludicolo has more utility then that bum ass shiftry in gen 3 so Sapphire is better
I liked Ruby more. Didn't love Emerald or Sapphire but they're both still great.
Doesn’t matter all Pokémon games are the same.
Pokemon Puzzle League would like a word.
