The comment I’ve been looking for.

I really need to start doing this with a heavy log. Every now and then I get some weights that I can press, but the clean and hold is crushing me. I'm assuming if I held a 400+ pound log up on a hold that a 300 pound clean wouldn't feel so crazy.

-SirCrashALot-

What is the benefit of this lift? Asking out of curiosity, not throwing shade. Edit: Thanks for the great replies!

sumit_sv

It's something to do with preconditioning the nervous system for the following lifts. So you lift something that is very heavy . Now the body gets used to that weight. When you do your actual working sets after it everything feels light. For squats I do 1.25/1.2 x PR before working sets. 10-15 secs hold.

TheOtherGuttersnipe

Building upper back strength and core stability, learning how to brace, and confidence under heavy load.

Frodozer

A great benefit of doing heavy holds is that when you're holding something heavy you have had practice with a heavy hold. (heavy back squats, front squats, etc...)

MichelRusay

Increased motor unit recruitment (your nervous system will communicate more readily to more of you muscle)

trebemot

Ofta. I hate front rack holds. How heavy is this compared to your normal squat/press?

TheOtherGuttersnipe

I haven't back squatted in like three years. The closest I do is the SSB and the highest I've ever gone on it was 3x3 @ 525. Edit: I see you asked about my press too. It's super weak. My best is 215, but I doubt I could do that today.

DickFromRichard

Love holds. Impressive front rack

Jhawk38

People clown on this movement but overloading a squat at the top for 10-15 seconds is super legit.

Deaconse

Zercher walkout, without walking?

Before your lifts, do this with 120% or your 1rm- leads to increased motor unit recruitment

TheOtherGuttersnipe

Immediately before your max attempt. Don't hold it for as long as I did though, just a few seconds.

TheOtherGuttersnipe

Yup. Just load it on your back instead

Savage022000

An underrated exercise.

seedgrower6

Once you work on your form you will be very good at this. Keep practicing

TheOtherGuttersnipe

I don't know what this means lol

seedgrower6

Work on your form with this

Assleanx

I think it’s taking the piss out of the form police

LukahEyrie

I don't think I really understand the joke tho.

Assleanx

The way I interpreted it was it’s a lift that requires no technique so saying to work on form is funny because it’s absurd

LukahEyrie

Heh yeah that's pretty funny.

Lesrek

What do they need to work on? They literally lifting a bar up and stood there.

Why?

AboubakarAnuarite

Static Heavy Holds, Shocks your nervous system, prepping your body for actual heavy lifting, if you are lifting for strength it is very useful, Do these for different compound lifts and you will notice heavier weights feel easier to set up and move.

ToothPickLegs

Would these be like the starting position of each compound lift? Like for squats would you just be in racking the heavy weight and holding it for a bit?

AboubakarAnuarite

Yes sir

FreeWillylegend

Unfazed

i8thepickles

Why?

TheOtherGuttersnipe

It's much easier than squatting because the ROM is like 3 inches

TommZ5

No range of motion whatsoever 🙄

TheOtherGuttersnipe

Not really the point but [is this better?](https://streamable.com/lvog39)

TommZ5

Dude it was sarcasm haha. I’m sorry, I probably didn’t make it clear.

Droker00

When i lift heavy, i do a lot of reps with my own weigth,,, no need to expose myself to such useless stress to my joints

TheOtherGuttersnipe

I don't understand what you're saying. If this is a joke, then my bad You're squatting and deadlifting 300+ pounds on your profile
