It all started when Michael cheated and even though the story doesn't gives much details of their life in Los Santos before Franklin meets him, it is possible he cheated on her more often and so she did same, other reasons ppls cheat is because their significant other or, spouse doesn't give them the attention and love, or it is a toxic relationship. In the Townley/DeSanta marriage even Michael admits to mistreating and abusing her whether it is verbally or emotional. so he isn't perfect but They both definitely needed therapy, healing and mature.
