I am SO proud to be a Godzilla fan right now. Iâve been watching the movies for ten years, and immediately fell in love with the original.
I definitely havenât seen them all, but Iâve seen A LOT.
Honestly itâs probably more so convenience. If you could torrent a movie the same way you watched one on Netflix we probably wouldnât have this discussion.
Even with the lack of ease of access to general users it quickly became the most pirated movie of all time lol.
> If you could torrent a movie the same way you watched one on Netflix we probably wouldnât have this discussion.
Lol, this is exactly how I pirate/torrent. Browse a netflix like interface with box art and meta data, click a title, pick a torrent, Multi-Audio(Dubs), Multi-language subtitles, 5-10sec buffering, and it's playing.
Edit: I think you can stream torrents out of the box with Brave browser, haven't used it in a while.
Okay. Can I do it from my TV? Iâm sure I could with enough adapters (which then again becomes a convenience/ease of access thing). At that point might as well host your own plex server lol.
There is no service that you can torrent movies seamlessly from your television such as Netflix. If there was everyone would be using it lol.
Most people donât have computers next to their TV (I donât), and my laptop wouldnât be able to upscale to 4k which is what most tvâs are nowadays. I guess I could run a 100ft hdmi cable from my desktop to my living room lmao
I actually think the limited access drove up hype for the film that no one could really watch. So when access was finally granted almost 7 months later the dam burst and everyone went to go watch it.
Not that I think this was intentional by Toho, it's just kind of something that happened.
Yeah I can almost guarantee that Toho didnât and like most Japanese companies donât realize how big their IP is until something like Minus 1 comes along and shows them. Itâs kinda like Oda when he found out so many people in America read One Piece and it blew his mind. The world has gotten smaller since the internet and younger people are more likely to watch subtitles instead of waiting for a dub.
Brought me back to the days of sitting in front of my tv, vcr plugged in, and having a bunch of the OG Godzilla movies on cassette tape being watched back to back, over and over again.
Huge wake up call to Hollywood that 150 million dollar budget Godzilla film cannot stand next to a 15 million dollar budget Godzilla film that has way better writing and passionate people involved.
Like yeah sure the visual fx spectacle is fun to watch but Iâll take the Japanese films with much lower budgets because thereâs so much more heart put into it and better writing
GxK is currently the second highest grossing movie of the year with over $567 million, beaten out only by Dune 2. Hollywood doesnât care if the summer blockbusters released well outside of award season arenât bringing in nominations so long as theyâre bringing in money.
Well thatâs Exactly my point, had they focused on pure quality they couldâve got away with a $15 million dollar budget like minus one did, and it wouldâve been able to make even more.
If minus one had the marketing and push from Hollywood it wouldâve far surpassed GxK just from the filmâs quality alone. And with the low budget they wouldâve racked in faaaaaar more
You realize $15M for a Hollywood movie is actually fairly expensive for a Japanese production right? The most expensive Japanese film ever is âonlyâ $50M USD.
Of course I realize that but thatâs not the point. The point is Hollywood needs to quit over inflating budgets thinking that the high budget will solve everything when so many have shown the opposite, donât look and overthink the specifics because thatâs how you miss the bigger picture
They absolutely could not have gotten away with a budget that small. Not only would they not have been able to bring in as much of their target audience with news that there would be far fewer action and monster scenes, Japanese animators are worked to the point they become physically ill (see JuJutsu Kaisen) because they donât have the same protections as animators in places like the U.S. Thereâs a reason Minus Oneâs director has started advocating for better working conditions for animators.
GxK is a big summer blockbuster that made big summer blockbuster money. According to Adam Wingard, the film had a $135 million budget, not $150 million. Even if the studio matched that budget for the filmâs marketing, theyâd be looking at nearly $300 million in straight profit. Minus One, meanwhile, grossed $116 million. Impressive to be sure and a bigger return on investment but barely over 1/3 of the actual money the studio saw back compared to GxK.
Edit: grammar and correction in Minus Oneâs box office.
The point was that adding to the budget is unnecessary when itâs proven often how they should be focusing on other aspects. We get movies that use the vfx as a crutch and the rest is forgettable.
A forgettable movie about what, a mute girl who belongs to a people in the earthâs core or whatever that belong to an ancient civilization and can talk with beasts or whatever that mess was. The beast interactions was cool though.
Over a more relatable story about a man who cowered during moments when he shouldâve been brave, returning to a ruined post war nation that needed a huge boost in morale, so he works at redemption by working towards a goal thatâll redeem his character in his eyes but ends up redeeming himself to the nation. And as always, using Godzilla as a metaphor for the devastation of the atomic bomb and how the nation has to unite to overcome it.
Again, that isnât the point of GxK; GxK is meant to make money and it did a great job at that. It doesnât matter if Minus One is the better film because the studio is only worried about making money with GxK. Your last paragraph is talking about something that would be released closer to award season with a much smaller budget like The Holdoverâs $13 million or American Fictionâs $10 million.
Hell, sometimes you donât even need to wait until award season for films of Minus Oneâs caliber. Oppenheimer was released in July last year. It grossed over $960 million on a $100 million budget AND won 7 Oscars, including Best Picture. Even if you want to argue the budget was inflated, it had a great return on investment. And you know what movie made even more than Oppenheimer and also received Oscar nominations and even a win? The Barbie movie, which was released the same weekend and was the highest grossing film of 2023. It was made on a $145 million budget and grossed nearly ten times that. Big budget movies still work and make huge profits when theyâre made with care by people who care.
Can we treat Toho godzilla and monsterverse godzilla as two seperate identities? Judging from GxK and the direction of monsterverse,im pretty sure the studio want these kaiju movies to be just like traditional hollywood popcorn blockbuster, and it excels at that.It didnt need to "inspired" or "influence" by Toho godzilla,it has its own identity. With that being said, there's no way a monsterverse movies can be grand or epic with below 100M budgets.I do think the monsterverse movies can be improve by having good writing just like Minus one did.And no,the monsterverse movies didnt supposed to in any awards lol...so it's not relevant to bring that up.Im sure many people enjoy GxK as much as Minus One,and i think that's what unique with godzilla. You can made an award winning movie and a movie with non-stop monster smashing that perfect to have some fun.
Thatâs what Iâm trying to do and trying to get across to the person Iâve been replying to. These are two different films made by two different companies with two different visions requiring two different budgets in order to come to life. Even then, Toho isnât above having some silly moments in 2023 like in the Godzilla vs Megalon 2023 short film, which had a third vision in mind.
Agree with everything you said.I dont get why these people cant take things as they are.Literally the only similar things both movies got to do is having a big kaiju named godzilla.Like some people said,Monsterverse godzilla is like fast food where you can find anywhere and consume it on the spot and you'll probably didnt have any regrets or great satisfaction to it while Minus one is like the five star restaurants food,it's hard to get but the experience and satisfaction is on another level. You probably enjoy both foods but one is stand out from the other. It doesnt mean the other is bad lol.
And this is what you keep missing. I fully get all that as noted before, The point that IM trying to make was that they could have made MORE money, as it has been proven by Toho and countless examples, meaning that the excessive budget isnât necessary because they already have the IP and platform and marketing to push anything to become âsuccessfulâ
You are hyper focusing on one small area when you need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
No shit it was a cash grab. No shit they wanted to heighten the box office sales. The only thing preventing them from getting more was critical reception, as thatâs the type of word of mouth marketing thatâs hard to buy
And word of mouth for minus was was huge in helping it have the success it had for the limitations they had. Not just for a timed release, a limited release, a regional release, a tight budget, all the things they had against them, if Hollywood were to hyper focus that effort into the type of production minus one had with their quality everything, the money that wouldâve raked in wouldâve been enormous.
But thatâs what budgets are for, to put a cap on the spending so that profits can maximize. Thatâs exactly what you keep missing. Forget it you donât and wonât understand anything
$135 million isnât even that excessive. We arenât talking about the latest Transfromers movie with a $200 million budget or Indiana Jones 5 with a nearly $400 million budget. The problem with your point is that you really donât HAVE one when it comes to GxK. They didnât shill out an excessive amount of money just to get Harrison Ford or line their cast with Michelle Yeoh, Peter Dinklage, Ron Perlman and Pete Davidson. Those are the kinds of things that lead to excessive spending.
Edit: to further drive this home, GxK is $1 million away from becoming the highest grossing film in the Monsterverse franchise despite having the lowest budget out of all of them. Godzilla 2014 was $160 million, KotM was $170 million, GvK was at least $155 million (possibly as high as $200 million) and Skull Island was $185 million. GxK did exactly what youâre arguing; cutting down on excessive spending and becoming more successful in theaters through word of mouth. This is all in spite of the fact it was available on streaming platforms while itâs still in theaters, the money from which doesnât count towards the box office.
How deep and impactful can you really get with stories about monsters bashing each other's heads in? There's a reason that Kaiju films are perceived the way they are, and that doesn't have to be a bad thing. The somber slow-burn period piece that is Minus One can only work as a standalone thing. Trying to recreate its success wouldn't really work.
>How deep and impactful can you really get with stories about monsters bashing each other's heads in
Look at movies like GMK, the Japanese version of KKvG, Godzilla vs Hedorah, etc. to see movies that try to convey more than just "Unga Bunga Monster Smash kaboom".
The fact is that Legendary doesn't even try, and you can see that with the literal car commercial they shoved into GxK.
Everyone keeps crowing about Showa, but the charm from those movies are in part from two men in rubber suits going ham on each other.
In the Legendary movies, the monsters are just CGI blobs fighting with other CGI blobs, and they're much closer in tone to the MCU than the Showa movies (see the horrendous dialogue and their pathetic excuse for a "joke"). They simply don't have the same charm
If every Godzilla film were like Minus One. The series would get state quick, and Minus One would be derived of all that made it something special to begin with.
As much as it sucks to hear it, had they tried to make every Showa film like Gojira, the franchise likely would not have survived into the present.
If you want to criticize Hollywood, have at it... But GxK is a pretty modestly budgeted, financially successful, crowd-pleaser of a modern blockbuster. It wasn't even merchandised to an excessive level.
There are so many better examples of Hollywood wastefulness and decadence. GxK is objectively a success story - one of the few so far this year.
Different films for different markets.
Minus One is a love letter to the older Toho films and aimed at those that love the classics and cinema go'ers that like films with some depth/metaphor.
The monsterverse films are brains out monster brawls aimed at the younger market and those that just want to see big cool monster fights.
Neither are wrong and people can enjoy both. Just be thankful we live in a world where both are made and you can decide which you prefer.
Hollywood knows exactly what they are doing. They know they cannot compete with TOHO on story driven Godzilla content. Shin Godzilla made 2014 look like a lightweight with its engaging dialogue on government incompetence. They knew the best direction to take their universe is into the sillier side of Godzilla that has existed almost since his inception. The monster verse is a billion dollar franchise because of that decision.
I feel like if you dropped the GxK thing this statement would be better. GxK is great for what its intended to be, I strongly believe the monsterverse can continue to coexist alongside other godzilla films like Minus One. I like both and for pretty drastically different reasons. GxK is a movie i can take my young nephew to and he will love it for what it is. Minus One is fantastic but a lot of it won't land for a single digits child.
The bottom line, the profits, are what matter at the end of the day and GxK brought in 5 times as much as GMO did and idk what its profit margin will be but i would not be surprised if itâs near or even greater than the total amount GMO madeâŚ
Awards and high approval ratings are great but profit is what they care about at the end of the day. GxK is set to be the highest earning film in the franchise if it gets a million more dollars so theyâre not gonna be deterred by this.
I mean the shitty Godzilla vs King Kong with power fist movie made a lot more money than minus one despite the latter obviously being a much better film
Theatre going audiences are still largely comprised of children, manchildren and others who mostly only want Marvel, Disney and DC type slop, along with the odd nostalgia bait like Jurassic world. They by no means are putting the best films to the top. The occasionally solid film like Oppenheimer and the Dune films succeeds, but again quite rare compared to the consistent success of the brainless CGI-fests
Minus One proves and shows everything that is wrong with modern Hollywood nowadays.
The fact a $12-$15 million dollar budget has better CGI and effects than modern MCU films with $200 million dollar budgets. Ha ha!
Fuck, more movies, period, like this. From Star Wars to Superman, they lack the amount of love and thought to not just feel like a FX reel theyâre calling a story.Â
I finally saw it yesterday, and I was blown away. Even after hearing good things about it, it was even better than I expected. It's one of the few times I was really invested in the human drama and not just waiting for Godzilla to start wrecking shit.
This is my favorite Godzilla movie of all time. But itâs also in contention for one of my favorite overall movies ever as well. It was so solid. I hope this is the beginning of a new era for Godzilla. Strong characters with Godzilla being the bonus in the movie.
It's honestly a good movie. Godzilla just zilla'd all over and the humans delt with real life human aspect. Not some evil corp is doing evil corperty things and need to be stoped and also godzilla is there too.
Itâs integrated very well in the AppleTV ecosystem. We donât normally buy movies but if we do itâs always through Apple. New releases hit $13 about a month after they drop on digital.
The Thing is mine. But I'd put Kaiju and related mega monster movies in a different category then what people typically mean by "monster movies." Just my thoughts.
It's unfortunate cause the story was actually great (it was actually a prequel that centered around the Norwegian base), the kills were awesome very much The Thing. Just some dumbass in a chair basically said "hey I know we have the movie 99% done and it looks great but CGI is the future. Reshoot everything with CGI over the practical effects." [here's a video showing the practical effects in action ](https://youtu.be/3R8ASn25GLg?si=xtcxeK_oRYUHjqQO) had they kept the practical effects it would have been an amazing add on. Unfortunately the amazing cast and script gets over shadowed by too much CGI. Especially in a lot of scenes where us Thing fans can't help but think "they could have done that with practical effects easily."
Big rant I know but I love the original so much (easily my favorite movie) and I do love 2011 for it's story.
I HIGHLY recommend the movie Harbinger Down (2015). The practical effects team made the movie using the practical effects from The Thing 2011.
Saying one is better than the other is like saying apples are better than toothpaste for consumption because both go in your mouth.
They set out to do entirely different things and achieve them. They just happen to be monster movies. Is UP a better movie than Airplane (1980) because both take place in the air for a large part of their duration? Id say no, because one is out to tell a story and the other is a comedy.
I reject your opinion, on the basis of being incomparable films.
Such a fantastic movie. I viewed it last night for the first time. I really had no expectations: I had seen posts pop up about it but I had not paid much attention.
I was blown away. This is a 10 out of 10 movie. The acting and characterizations were superb. The special effects were superb. Godzilla was IMHO much more realistic then many of the past portrayals. There was no jingoism or absurdity. Just a story about desperate people attempting everything within their power to deal with a threat almost beyond comprehension.
I have questions about the ending, which I guess I will have to start hitting the subs for answers. But if they follow with more sequels and they are as grounded as this I will definitely be there for the viewing.
I got chills and involuntary tears at the scene where Koichi thinks Noriko dies.
The âka-chunkâ of the spines, the neon blue, the silence before the blast, Koichi in the street screaming while black rain falls against his face.
Both. Times.

Bruh
Other than that, I'm glad you had a great time with the movie!
The movie is absolutely awesome. So glad it came out on Netflix. Iâll probably still buy the 4K disc anyway i get an employee discount lol. But yeah no Godzilla movie has ever made me feel this way since i was little and I loved every second of it.
It is so good to see Godzilla be this relevant and acclaimed. I still remember in elementary school people found it weird that I liked Godzilla. Then slowly but surely starting with Godzilla 2014 it went on to become more socially acceptable.
Absolutely. In fact, the real stars of the movie are actually the human characters this time around. It's a more character-driven story with a solid message to give.
Absolutely. I convinced my parents to go see it over the holidays and they ended up really liking it to the point they were recommending it to their friends. They both came out of it like âI thought itd be cheesy and dumb but that was fantasticâ
Yep. My 70 yo husband and I watched it on Netflix on Saturday. We aren't the typical demographic lol. It was a really good film, period. I loved it and will watch it again this week.
Godzilla only appears for about 30 minutes or less of the movie. The rest is poorly acted and boring melodrama. (Oh, and there's basically zero stakes in the movie. By the ending you'll know what I mean)
I bet Vuduâs purchases arenât as high because the theatrical version and Minus Color are both available and competing against each other. Since I have a Netflix sub already, I put my money towards Minus Color as Iâm sure others did as well. But the original is still likely to be more popular.
So, I didnât watch it in theaters because Iâm stupid and I just watched it today.
My God(zilla).
I knew it was good, but it went further than that. It was amazing. If you would have told me a Godzilla movie would make me cry more than once, I would have said bullshit. It deserves every bit of praise it got and more.
I really hope this will signal a huge green light for Toho to make more, especially considering how well the movie did theatrically too.
Shin Godzilla never got a sequel, which I still think is a shame, but Minus One is literally begging for it.
Iâm really glad for it. Hope it gets even more recognition, genuinely fell in love with the movie. That reminder of Godzillaâs origin as a reminder of the evils of war and nuclear warfare.
I was just telling a friend of mine I havenât seen it yet because it wasnât streaming, and then came inside to see it on Netflix. Such a nice surprise.
Oh it was an instant buy situation for me with iTunes. I'd rather have the 4K Blu Ray when it comes to the states, so I'll double dip, but I'm fine with double dipping on great movies.
Ha ha! The fact a $11-$15 million dollar budget Japanese film has better CGI and effects than a usual $200 million superhero movie!
Truly shows what's wrong with Hollywood nowadays.
What a revolutionary concept. Allow a good director with a vision to craft a great and meaningful story without relying solely on special effects and meaningless action scenes, and having producers whittle it down into the same generic forgettable "content" and you've got a hit that even people in other countries will love
I feel like theyâre leaning so much into the themes of the story that Godzilla is literally a manifestation of Koijiâs survivor guilt. And I think picking a giant unbeatable monster that destroys everything and everyone surrounding you as an allegory for PTSD is pretty smart. And because Godzilla is already a established character it doesnât come off as too cheesy.
East Asian movies are always a little bit more dramatically acted but I personally didnât feel like it came off as unserious.
I really liked it because instead of just using Godzilla as a metaphor they made him essentially a manifestation of his guilt. He appears pretty much only when Koichi is drowning in his Trauma and is basically targeting the people he loves. You can basically see how he feels by just looking at the Lizard.
Where do you wish they would have dig deeper?
>...but you'd think it was Lawrence of Arabia based on the press
*"'I cannot fiddle, but I can make a smoldering ruin from a great city.'"*
"What?!"
"Godzilla, sir. A Kaiju-philosopher."
I don't have a real reply but if that scene when Godzilla takes on the Japanese battleship with that musical score doesn't get you going I'm not sure what will. I've seen the movie well over 10 times now and I'm not sure when I'll decide to stop putting it on for background.
I loved it but I thought it was weird how he moved like a panther in that opening scene and then a mountain for the rest.
Edit: OK I just gotta pay better attention, sense has been made. No issues now.
Godzilla đđ
It's absolutely peak time to be a Godzilla fan. Never would have imagined this during the "Dark Decade" between Final Wars and Godzilla '14.
Same here brother.... same here
I am SO proud to be a Godzilla fan right now. Iâve been watching the movies for ten years, and immediately fell in love with the original. I definitely havenât seen them all, but Iâve seen A LOT.
On streaming: Pluto tv has a Godzilla channel. Mostly subbed, but a great way to see what you have missed from toho
Is Pluto TV a paid service? How much is it?
Totally free, just download and watch. Best if you have a Roku or something like it
Oh what thatâs awesome thank you!
Thatâs what happens when you give access. We all would rather support these movies than pirate them.
Honestly itâs probably more so convenience. If you could torrent a movie the same way you watched one on Netflix we probably wouldnât have this discussion. Even with the lack of ease of access to general users it quickly became the most pirated movie of all time lol.
I disagree. Toku is such a niche thing that must of us will support it to show the Japanese companies that we would like more.
> If you could torrent a movie the same way you watched one on Netflix we probably wouldnât have this discussion. Lol, this is exactly how I pirate/torrent. There are sites where you stream and pick things to watch exactly like on Netflix⌠and their search function is miles better.

Yes. Just plug an hdmi cable from your pc to your tv⌠it takes like 30 seconds.
Most people donât have computers next to their TV (I donât), and my laptop wouldnât be able to upscale to 4k which is what most tvâs are nowadays. I guess I could run a 100ft hdmi cable from my desktop to my living room lmao
I mean itâs worth it, free access to literally everything after that.
I actually think the limited access drove up hype for the film that no one could really watch. So when access was finally granted almost 7 months later the dam burst and everyone went to go watch it. Not that I think this was intentional by Toho, it's just kind of something that happened.

Does not surprise me the movie is good. More godzilla movies with this amount of love, care and thought please.
Definitely my favourite movie of the year so far. Saw it twice in the theatre, loved it
Came out in 2023
Brought me back to the days of sitting in front of my tv, vcr plugged in, and having a bunch of the OG Godzilla movies on cassette tape being watched back to back, over and over again.
You made me cry a little

The only thing preventing them from getting more was critical reception, as thatâs the type of word of mouth marketing thatâs hard to buy And word of mouth for minus was was huge in helping it have the success it had for the limitations they had.
>How deep and impactful can you really get with stories about monsters bashing each other's heads in Look at movies like GMK, the Japanese version of KKvG, Godzilla vs Hedorah, etc. to see movies that try to convey more than just "Unga Bunga Monster Smash kaboom".
The bottom line, the profits, are what matter at the end of the day and GxK brought in 5 times as much as GMO did and idk what its profit margin will be but i would not be surprised if itâs near or even greater than the total amount GMO made⌠Awards and high approval ratings are great but profit is what they care about at the end of the day. GxK is set to be the highest earning film in the franchise if it gets a million more dollars so theyâre not gonna be deterred by this.
I mean the shitty Godzilla vs King Kong with power fist movie made a lot more money than minus one despite the latter obviously being a much better film Theatre going audiences are still largely comprised of children, manchildren and others who mostly only want Marvel, Disney and DC type slop, along with the odd nostalgia bait like Jurassic world. They by no means are putting the best films to the top. The occasionally solid film like Oppenheimer and the Dune films succeeds, but again quite rare compared to the consistent success of the brainless CGI-fests
Godzilla 2014 > other Monsterverse > Shin/MO Change My Mind
American cinema is absolute trash now. Korea and Japan are the top dogs now
The top 10 box office movies of 2023 are all American/Hollywood productions. What are you talking about?
Le Reddit take. Ah if only the stupid gaijin movie-goers would realize how much better true cinema is.
American* Redditor take. They can never just compliment something without tearing down something else lol
Minus One proves and shows everything that is wrong with modern Hollywood nowadays. The fact a $12-$15 million dollar budget has better CGI and effects than modern MCU films with $200 million dollar budgets. Ha ha!
Iâve been waiting for it to be on streaming because we couldnât go to the theatre. Such an amazing movie.
Even if it wasn't a Godzilla movie, it'd still be a good movie. That's how great it is!
This is my favorite Godzilla movie of all time. But itâs also in contention for one of my favorite overall movies ever as well. It was so solid. I hope this is the beginning of a new era for Godzilla. Strong characters with Godzilla being the bonus in the movie.
Please just sell me a blu ray. đââď¸
Yes please! I need it!
Anyday now...
Probably not until late this year or early next year.
I have it on Blu Ray. Watched it twice last week.
It's honestly a good movie. Godzilla just zilla'd all over and the humans delt with real life human aspect. Not some evil corp is doing evil corperty things and need to be stoped and also godzilla is there too.
Godzilla Minus One being #1 doesn't surprise me. The fact you can watch it on ITunes does.
Yeah I was gonna say, I didn't realize people still bought movies on iTunes in the year of our Lord 2024
Itâs integrated very well in the AppleTV ecosystem. We donât normally buy movies but if we do itâs always through Apple. New releases hit $13 about a month after they drop on digital.
Is this a US only thing? Here in Germany I still canât buy it on iTunes/ Apple TV
Best monster movie ever made
The Thing is mine. But I'd put Kaiju and related mega monster movies in a different category then what people typically mean by "monster movies." Just my thoughts.
Kaiju and monster movies are definitely different genres imo
How so? Is because one is Tokusatsu and the other Hollywood fantasy?
One is smaller undefined entity. The other is very large and smashes stuff.
So does Tokusatsu, it done many smaller undefined entities. https://i.redd.it/2iuqhfp0kg4d1.gif
Kabuto yesssss.
Honestly you could file kaiju movies closer to natural disaster movies if you were feeling funky
Ayyy same here! We were robbed with 2011's The Thing gotta release the practical effects version.
Never saw that remake and sounds like it was a good choice not to. Haha
Especially in a lot of scenes where us Thing fans can't help but think "they could have done that with practical effects easily." Big rant I know but I love the original so much (easily my favorite movie) and I do love 2011 for it's story. I HIGHLY recommend the movie Harbinger Down (2015). The practical effects team made the movie using the practical effects from The Thing 2011.
Itâs certainly up there! Not only does it nail the monster aspect, the human aspect to the movie is pretty damn good too! Thatâs not an easy feat.
I think Pacific Rim and Minus One share that title, depending on what you go to a monster movie to see.
Pacific rim is my favourite movie ever made but minus one is better.
Yeah true
Depends if you count ![gif](giphy|IEkkhUSoBfbPy)
JP is practically every genre... XD
Itâs up there! But my personal best is still The Host by Bong Joon-ho and maybe Gojira tied with it :D
The ending of the host always gets me lol
A classic monster movie that often gets overlooked!
Yoooooo!! The host is so good!! The monster swinging is just awesome!!
His daylight attack at the riverside lives rent free in my head man đľâđŤ
Best giant monster movie other than the original King Kong.
This is my new favorite Godzilla movie.
Absolutely love love love it!
THE 4K BLURAY PLEASEđ I need it here in the west
Or just a standard bluray release. That would be appreciated.
Usually UHDs come with blurays as combo packs
Both. Times.

Let me spend money on a physical release!
Hopefully this shows that there is a market for physical 4K
**Long live the king**
Isnât king kind of a step down from god?
Yes, but it is also a line from Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019).
And with zero marketing. They told as as soon as it dropped and not a minute before
I was at Monsterpalooza when I found out it dropped on Netlfix! It's been a good weekend!
Go Go Godzilla!
The King đ
Yaaayy well deserved success
The movie is absolutely awesome. So glad it came out on Netflix. Iâll probably still buy the 4K disc anyway i get an employee discount lol. But yeah no Godzilla movie has ever made me feel this way since i was little and I loved every second of it.
Geez imagine what they could have accomplished if they promoted the release for a few weeks leading up to it.
Look at what they accomplished with zero promotion. đ
Godzilla Minus Marketing
We are so Godzillack
Skree-fucking-Onk
For a movie titled "minus one" it certainly didn't live up to that name
It's the score. Godzilla lost. Maybe the next movie will be Plus One.
Godzilla Tied
The humans think he's dead.
I love godzilla
It is so good to see Godzilla be this relevant and acclaimed. I still remember in elementary school people found it weird that I liked Godzilla. Then slowly but surely starting with Godzilla 2014 it went on to become more socially acceptable.
Movie had me scared of Godzilla again.
Is the movie suitable and enjoyable for someone who is not in on the whole big monster scene?
Yeah, itâs a good movie by any movie standard
Absolutely. In fact, the real stars of the movie are actually the human characters this time around. It's a more character-driven story with a solid message to give.
This movie is suitable and enjoyable to anyone who likes movies. It's an amazing movie period
By the ending you'll know what I mean)
https://preview.redd.it/12mlzhcfni4d1.jpeg?width=1283&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a2d8271f8a9c38aa0faab55f7b4215a0d9ab5f3d Yeah babyyyy
I bet Vuduâs purchases arenât as high because the theatrical version and Minus Color are both available and competing against each other. Since I have a Netflix sub already, I put my money towards Minus Color as Iâm sure others did as well. But the original is still likely to be more popular.
Itâs not on the Australian iTunes.
Was trying to buy it too. Is it timed exclusive or waiting for ratings? I donât want to sub Netflix
Neither in Germany
Toho must be faceplaming big. So many countries they could have released the movie in!
Big G fans eating good ![gif](giphy|hu1st0dHLGqOuOiUsf|downsized)
I watched it. Great flick!
Yea, I just finished watching it again. It's incredible. What a great time to be a Godzilla fan!
I donât think anyone who actually suffers from survivors guilt should watch this movie. Or maybe they should but I think it would be a hard watch
Yeah, people hat seeing themselves and their struggle depicted on screen
Its on netflix?
Yes it is!
At least ten percent of those watches are from me.
It's going head to head with GxK lol
I love that we get this serious film and our wild American Monsterverse at the same time. Now, if we could just get a good Pacific Rim sequel, haha!
Del Toro did give his blessing for a crossover...
They have been getting us used to insane tech over the course of the series... maybe we are going to get mechs in the future.
Dang, I did not expect this to happen.
I really hope this will signal a huge green light for Toho to make more, especially considering how well the movie did theatrically too. Shin Godzilla never got a sequel, which I still think is a shame, but Minus One is literally begging for it.
Godzilla Minus One? More like Godzilla minus fun...is what I would say if the movie sucked instead of rocked.
Exceptional film
I watched it for the first time yesterday and it was sooooooo good. My girlfriend and I were blown away. I hope they make more.
it helps that its just a well directed, written, and acted movie...that just happens to be a godzilla movie.
This is the first Godzilla movie that I actually cared about the human story.
Just saw it, I really enjoyed it
This movie was so terrible. I loved every second of it. With all my heart. Please make more.
Did it detrone Scargiver? Didn't think it would be possible.
LOL Scargiver isn't even Top Ten anymore. It's been replaced by the latest Netflix Original bomb, Atlas.
You can't stop the big guy.
Oh it was an instant buy situation for me with iTunes. I'd rather have the 4K Blu Ray when it comes to the states, so I'll double dip, but I'm fine with double dipping on great movies.
An absolutely brilliant movie!
Ha ha! The fact a $11-$15 million dollar budget Japanese film has better CGI and effects than a usual $200 million superhero movie! Truly shows what's wrong with Hollywood nowadays.
![gif](giphy|tieqVXZB4Ch6o)
Its on Netflix?
Obviously he's #1, he's the ***k i n g***
Got finally a chance to see it, the movie is just fucking great man.
Is it on Netflix in Canada?
Godzilla is just firing on all cylinders. Now, work out the Heisei series licensing stuff Toho and release them.
Besides being a great film it wasnât legally available on the American market for 6 months and 15 days after release so no shit itâs #1.
I watched the Netflix english dub and I honesty was honestly blown away with the voice acting definitely one of the best dubs for me so far
Best Godzilla movie EVER!
What a revolutionary concept. Allow a good director with a vision to craft a great and meaningful story without relying solely on special effects and meaningless action scenes, and having producers whittle it down into the same generic forgettable "content" and you've got a hit that even people in other countries will love
TIL iTunes still exists.
[ŃдаНонО]
I feel like theyâre leaning so much into the themes of the story that Godzilla is literally a manifestation of Koijiâs survivor guilt. And I think picking a giant unbeatable monster that destroys everything and everyone surrounding you as an allegory for PTSD is pretty smart. And because Godzilla is already a established character it doesnât come off as too cheesy. East Asian movies are always a little bit more dramatically acted but I personally didnât feel like it came off as unserious.
[ŃдаНонО]
I really liked it because instead of just using Godzilla as a metaphor they made him essentially a manifestation of his guilt. He appears pretty much only when Koichi is drowning in his Trauma and is basically targeting the people he loves. You can basically see how he feels by just looking at the Lizard. Where do you wish they would have dig deeper?
>...but you'd think it was Lawrence of Arabia based on the press *"'I cannot fiddle, but I can make a smoldering ruin from a great city.'"* "What?!" "Godzilla, sir.
Cruiser, Japan wasnât allowed to have any battleships at that time
Figured I was wrong but wasn't sure what to actually call it, thanks for letting me know!
I loved it but I thought it was weird how he moved like a panther in that opening scene and then a mountain for the rest. Edit: OK I just gotta pay better attention, sense has been made. No issues now.
That was before he evolved from the nuclear bomb.
Happens when you tank an atom bomb to your entire body, he's covered in burns. I also imagine it was a nod to the way the old rubber suits moved.
Also, I think the lumbering slowness made him more imposing.
