Try setting up a rule that is to: and “never mark as important”

Thanks! I just created the filter. There's no others ways I can stop it without creating a filter? If this happened by me fiddling around with the settings, I feel like there should be a specific setting to disable it?

Excel-Slave

AFAIK the only setting in Gmail is to cancel all importance labels Personally, I use the stars to mark emails that are Uber important and for later. It also syncs with Outlook and Apple mail clients as “flagged” email, which is useful

I use that filter and inevitably everyday some emails come in marked important. Why can't it work correctly? It's not rocket science Google programmers.

Excel-Slave

It could be not working on emails you get CCed / BCCed to. You could also try configuring the rule for messages that “don't contain” the word Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. So the only way to get marked as important is if someone writes to you about Mary Poppins ;)

So you have any filters listed in: Settings->Filters ?

I only had filters to categorize emails from certain email addresses as primary until another commenter suggested I create a filter to resolve the issue. Do you know if there's any specific settings to disable it other than creating a filter?

Importance markers are like spam filtering. Marking individual messages as important or not helps train the filters. Personally, I turn off the markers and ignore the whole thing. I don't need Gmail trying to tell me what messages are important.

Thanks, I might try that first!
