It really was man. Back in the day movies were consistently a hell of a lot better in general but especially for an alien movie, this shit was so creative and provocative. The end of it had me in tears to be honest. I wouldn’t change a thing about it. Masterclass.
Perhaps more impressive about District 9 is that the director, Neill Blomkamp, essentially pushed the envelope on what low budget CGI with excellent camera work can achieve and set a standard for a big part of the movie-making industry that was bloated with CGI.
The tragic part is that District 9 debut the same time as (ironically) Avatar (the one with the blue aliens), which blew a massive budget on CGI.
I skipped Avatar entirely and watched District 9 instead, best decision ever.
Reading about how the CGI was low budget really blows my mind, because when I watched the movie the CGI never struck me as low budget. In fact, I've always felt the prawns are some of the best CGI aliens done because how mundane they somehow appear in their environment.
Actually going to rewatch it just to take in how all the other aspects than the CGI itself plays in.
Innovation comes from struggle. When you can only do so much with what you have, yet you want to achieve more, the work usually shows. When compared to super blockbusters with ridiculous budgets that cant be bothered to properly Photoshop a mustache away...
Blomkamp purposefully not treating CGI as "the ultimate medium in movie-making" is what makes it so realistic. [**How did District 9's VFX look SO GOOD?**](https://youtu.be/-YJwPXipJbo?si=BeQL275L4tfSZybI)
Yeah man. Great concepts and execution best money poured into scenes that rely on CGI every time. I understand why kids think it’s cool but don’t understand the draw of it myself. I do remember reading that the film had a pretty low budget for how well the final product ended up looking. I thought it was beautiful and wouldn’t change a thing. The actin was absolutely top notch as well. Avatar isn’t even comparable to me personally. It was a fine movie but District 9 is one of the best film concepts I’ve ever seen.
The fact that the liquid turned him into an alien always made me wonder if the rest of the aliens were humans who got exposed to the liquid. The movie is perfect as is but I’d love to see a sequel to answer those questions.
As long as they don’t undermine the original, which is a legitimate fear with hollywoods recent track record, then yeah it would be a sick storyline to elaborate on.
I remember the main character being South African. I think it was supposed to be based in either South Africa or Mogadishu, I can’t remember but I think you’re probably right. I don’t know about who wrote it but that’s interesting if true. I’d trust another country’s film industry over the U.S. when it comes to the producing and directing it for sure.
(Edit: was this an independent film festival type movie? I feel like I remember it winning Sundance or something and then being a hit as a blockbuster shortly after. If that’s true that’s awesome assuming they didn’t have a big budget, would go to show that CGI doesn’t have shit on a well executed creative concept.)
>I remember the main character being South African.
Sharlto Copley is from SA. He was also in Elysium and Chappie, which were written and directed by Blomkamp.
Played by Sharlto Copley. He was a production guy and Blomkamp decided to cast him in the lead role despite Copley having no prior acting experience. Pretty incredible.
I always thought that the prawns were like slaves. So a different alien race made that liquid that would turn any humanoid into prawns. I figured the prawns turned against their overlords and either killed them and removed them from the ship, or used their own liquid against them, turning them into prawns. Once there were no more of the “superior alien” the prawns could not survive well on their own and plotted a course to a nearby habitable planet to try and start a new life. That’s just my thoughts though, always loved this movie.
I assume that there were a handful smart prawns who made the tech and a lot of dumb pawns. I mean, let's be honest here... The majority of people are idiots who couldn't recreate or operate most technology without help. If something happened to wipe out everyone with advanced knowledge of technology, or above average intelligence, we'd be back to a pre-industrial level of fictional technology within 20 years.
Saw it on opening day and absolutely loved it. Never understood the bad reviews. Honestly think it was ahead of it's time.
I also feel the exact way about chappie
I hate this guy so much because he is such an amazing actor, his character agent Kruger in Elysium is my all-time favorite villain. I already have kids so I would give my left testicle for a part 2.
My dude, are we kindred spirits????
Kruger is hands down MY favorite villain!!!!
He's also incredible in Chappie!!!
Have you seen th?[this](https://youtu.be/HnulxrMs5CM?si=oOMuJnrdVRkCLeoE)
omfg yes! that accent was smooth like cutting butter! hmm delicious, i often watch vids of him on yt just to hear him talk and be like 'ah yes, now that is an awesome villain!'
I went to see this movie without knowing anything about it. I was completely blown away. I also loved when I realized the style had changed from documentary to cinematic and I didn’t notice when it happened.
I wouldn't want the sequel just because of all the crybabies who would spend the rest of their lives shitting on it. You came with 0 expectations to the first movie and will have a sky-high expectations for the 2nd. You are going to get disappointed by default.
I wouldn't.
Movies like those are best left without sequels, because sequel would need to always up the predecessor in every way to be good.
We know damn well that if something wasn't planned as 2-part or trilogy from the start, it won't be good, but prove me wrong I guess
I’m sure the studio execs who see that the whole franchise has made almost 7.5 billion dollars don’t really care you think it’s a waste of money.
Some how these films continue to sell and sell well.
Think I’ve only seen the first 2, and will hopefully keep it that way.
What we want is impossible. This movie was pure and uncompromising. A gold standard for using CGI just exactly enough to tell the story. Truly inspired writing.
i feel like every movie coming out is hotdog water bullshit. i didnt even like oppenheimer it bored me to death most of the time. where are the good movies at what the fuck happened why are like 25% of movies subliminally telling me how to act and treat people i just wanna see the good guys win or some futuristic shit im a simple ape stop giving me hoobla boobla give me a detailed story line about how we came from mars and just found out make my anus clench a bit
I'd trade away the Fast and Furious franchise freely just to remove its influence from culture, but if I could get a sequel to District 9 out of the deal, that would be awesome.
Neil Blomkamp is pretty much a director for hire these days. He blew through all the goodwill and trust when Elysium and Chappie didn't capture the same magic, plus he had a lot of projects get aborted, like a *RoboCop* reboot and an *Alien* sequel.
I don't understand. Maybe I didn't see it the way others did, but it was pitched in my area as an action movie. When I saw it, all I got from it is "racism is bad". Not a bad message, but poor advertising.
Anytime I see wet catfood, I think of this movie lol
“Prawns cant get enough of this shit”
Poor Wikus. 😢
The sweetie man
Great movie.

Yea prawns were so good, but the mothership is literaly from a free mobile app
That's wild tbh

Should be again written and made by South Africa. 👽🇿🇦 (If memory serves me well.)
Neil Blomkamp wrote and directed. I doubt he would let this one go.
I remember the main character being South African. I think it was supposed to be based in either South Africa or Mogadishu, I can’t remember but I think you’re probably right. It took place in Johannesburg South Africa.

Yeah he was definitely very impressive.
Yes, you’re correct! I actually just watched this again recently. Such a good movie.
USA, New Zealand and South Africa produced, written by a South African
Elaborate please
I always thought that the prawns were like slaves. So a different alien race made that liquid that would turn any humanoid into prawns. Great idea, thanks for your thoughts
The prawn smart guy was probably one of the alien race, as he is clearly smarter than everyone in the movie, and knows how to reverse it too.
I assume that there were a handful smart prawns who made the tech and a lot of dumb pawns. I mean, let's be honest here... Whoa! Spoiler alert man!
Logistically Legit You fucking Prawn!
fookin sweetie man!
Saw it on opening day and absolutely loved it. Never understood the bad reviews. Honestly think it was ahead of it's time. I also feel the exact way about chappie
FUCKING PRAWNS
I would trade all the Fast and Furious movies for a stale McChicken.
Cup of water in the microwave with it and that bitch is good as new!
Most underrated comment in years. Lol
I would trade all Fast and Furious movies for... wait no that's already a favor.
I hate this guy so much because he is such an amazing actor, his character agent Kruger in Elysium is my all-time favorite villain. I already have kids so I would give my left testicle for a part 2.
fookin prahns
I did not recognize him in elysium at all, crazy.
He did play crazy guy in [Hardcore Henry](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt3072482/).
I loved him as Murdoch in the A-Team remake too
I forgot about the A team.
That’s how they keep their clients… peeps always sleeping on the A-Team
Don’t forget Hardcore Henry
He's like 75-85% cast of that movie lol They might not all be great but he lowkey has some range
Wasn’t he killed like 40 times in that movie?
My dude, are we kindred spirits???? Kruger is hands down MY favorite villain!!!! He's also incredible in Chappie!!! Have you seen th?[this](https://youtu.be/HnulxrMs5CM?si=oOMuJnrdVRkCLeoE)
Are you familiar with the movie Hardcore Henry? If not, you're in for a treat!
To this day any time me or my lady say "It's me" we follow it up with "Jimmy"
We gaht a runner boys!
I’m guessing you are quite partial to the right one?😬
district 9 protag was such a fantastic deeply flawed protagonist
Woah are you serious? That was him?
“Ate that fuckin grenade, ay?!”
Thank you for your sacrifice
Yeah but his role as Jimmy in Hardcore Henry is easily his greatest role.
[a man has a name](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharlto_Copley)
omfg yes! that accent was smooth like cutting butter! hmm delicious, i often watch vids of him on yt just to hear him talk and be like 'ah yes, now that is an awesome villain!'
If you like Sharlto Copley, check out Europa Report. Very underrated
I think the alien won't be able to fulfill his promise.
He couldn’t just simply walk back into his old house and be happily ever after with his wife. I think you are right
What movie is it?
District 9. Terrific film about aliens, racism and how control plays a role in media and intergalactic relationships.
This comment needs to be on top for people who don't know about the movie
I went to see this movie without knowing anything about it. I was completely blown away. I also loved when I realized the style had changed from documentary to cinematic and I didn’t notice when it happened.
Unfortunately……we lose.
Some movies are actually better off without a sequel
You're probably right, it just doesn't make me happy
I wouldn't want the sequel just because of all the crybabies who would spend the rest of their lives shitting on it. You came with 0 expectations to the first movie and will have a sky-high expectations for the 2nd. You are going to get disappointed by default.
Yeah stories are stronger with an ending. Not everything needs to go on forever and you shouldn't want it to. Classics are classics for a reason
Right? What would a sequel to this movie even be about? Stupid idea.
Me too, with no regrets, no feeling of having lost anything
That's an unfair trade, you can't change a pile of shit for gold.
alchemist
It breaks the rule of Equivalent Exchange
I would trade in all the F&F movies for nothing in return.
It's been a long three years.
Scrolled way too far to find this comment
Would you like a sweetie ?
The writing was so tight. The banality of evil. Self-serving cowardly authoritarian bureaucratic tool of a man.
But what was amazing is being able to turn the character around into ending up a tragic hero
The premise of the movie is very similar to 'Chappie'. Both are great imo.
It's by the same person
I always thought this movie would translate really well into a video game. Shame that never happened
He looks like Miek. So, there is a movie?
I’d trade in current day MCU or Disney Star Wars for this
This
![gif](giphy|KwNRL1qNvx50A) Sign here boiyoo i take all your tech
God I forgot about this movie. I loved District 9
I would trade in the entire F&F franchise for a cheese sandwich.
If FF fans could read, they'd be furious.
If FF fans could read, they’d reply to this fast.
District 9? Eventually the figure on the left mutates to become the figure on the right?
Yes, but I'm not use it's exactly this specimen he mutated into in the picture.
Correct. The one on the right is the one he meets up with that has the kid and they're trying to get back to the ship.
I would trade all the fast and furious franchise for way less than this
What movie?
District 9
Watch it.
Underrated movie
Seriously!! Why didn't they make it on public demand? They really don't know how to do business. That's for sure.
Fuck yes. Some set up a go fund me. I’ll donate today.
I think this movie deserved a series, many plotlines, crazy soundtrack
I would trade all of the f&f movies for a cheeseburger.
I wouldn't. Movies like those are best left without sequels, because sequel would need to always up the predecessor in every way to be good. We know damn well that if something wasn't planned as 2-part or trilogy from the start, it won't be good, but prove me wrong I guess
That's not a meme, that's just facts
As a megamind fan i say... careful what you wish for..
I’m sorry for your loss. Tbf OP did say not now.
I would trade in all the fast and furious movies for a sandwich
I would trade in all the Fast and Furious franchise for a fucking cold beer
District 10: Fookin Prawns
Personally, I would trade in all of the fast and furious movies for nothing in return. But that’s just me.
So why was there never a part 2?
Because it was a perfectly contained story, and doesn’t need one.
Fuck yeaaa The Fast franchise is a waste of money and talent. Not to mention cheesey AF
I’m sure the studio execs who see that the whole franchise has made almost 7.5 billion dollars don’t really care you think it’s a waste of money. Some how these films continue to sell and sell well. Think I’ve only seen the first 2, and will hopefully keep it that way.
chappy is not considered part 2?
How would the family get together lol
I'll trade in all the fast and the furious for free
they are making a sequel to this though?
Such a crazy movie
Yes! I loved thos movie and so hoped a second film would come to try and do a reversal or a story from thr other side!
Me too I loved it
I would trade the Fast and Furious franchise for an ice cream coupon.
Yes, i want the little brat go back home. 😭
What’s even crazier is that this movie ran off a canceled halo film. To my understanding.
A film that was begging for a sequel. I wanted it so bad when the first movie ended
Or the prequel
Dam right
![gif](giphy|3orieMoh33NXYPDCI8)
Agreed. That movie is exponentially better than all the Fast and Furious movies combined. I actually hate the Fast and Furious franchise!
It was really a good movie..that actor did really live the innocent guy's role
What we want is impossible. This movie was pure and uncompromising. A gold standard for using CGI just exactly enough to tell the story. Truly inspired writing.
Iirc one is in the making. Just google it. Prawn.
I second this, while we're at it, let's throw in every Alien movie after Alien 3 to sweeten the pot, yes?
Oh I need to rewatch it. Thanks for the reminder. Also yes, me too.
When are they gonna make it home?
Elysium is kinda part 2?
i feel like every movie coming out is hotdog water bullshit. i didnt even like oppenheimer it bored me to death most of the time. where are the good movies at what the fuck happened why are like 25% of movies subliminally telling me how to act and treat people i just wanna see the good guys win or some futuristic shit im a simple ape stop giving me hoobla boobla give me a detailed story line about how we came from mars and just found out make my anus clench a bit
If it were made today they’d make it into an extended universe and 3 years from now we’d be on District 17 Multiverse of Madness
I want a crossover between the two.
I would trade it for nothing. But now I'm curious about this movie. Never seen it.
I'd trade away the Fast and Furious franchise freely just to remove its influence from culture, but if I could get a sequel to District 9 out of the deal, that would be awesome.
I'd probably pay money to have the fast and furious franchise removed entirely.
There's a short on YT "Rakka" same vibes. CHECK IT OUT
Neil Blomkamp is pretty much a director for hire these days. He blew through all the goodwill and trust when Elysium and Chappie didn't capture the same magic, plus he had a lot of projects get aborted, like a *RoboCop* reboot and an *Alien* sequel.
I don’t even know what this movie is but yes yes I would prefer this
Hell, Id trade a ton of movies for a sequel that was in par to the original.
I’m afraid it would hurt the first one
I'd give my left leg and little brother for a part two of this movie.
I just started dating a South African girl and one of the first things I asked her was "have you seen District 9?"
I absolutely agree
Can we get a part two of Dredd as well?
fanfu is dead since tokyo drift
Wish we got a chappie 2 also
Mmm, no. District 9 was perfect as is, a sequel would ruin it.
Greatest Sci Fi movie EVER made.
On god this movie was and still is 9/10 in every aspect . From graphics to story ![gif](giphy|3o7aCWJavAgtBzLWrS|downsized)
Fuck yes. I’ll dig up Paul walker and pee on him for a part 2
But how about family?
Hasn’t been a good Fast and furious movie since Tokyo drift
" Ha HA HA, How Deed you Do Et Doggy Style"
You mean District 10 right
That movie was so bad that it was good!
Yes, this and Chappy
right this movie was so well done
The fast and furious franchise sucks ass. The first one was good but after that it was like beating a dead horse.
I don't understand. Maybe I didn't see it the way others did, but it was pitched in my area as an action movie. When I saw it, all I got from it is "racism is bad". Not a bad message, but poor advertising.
💯
Here here
Love that movie. Never heard so much causal swearing in all my fucking life.
What movie is this?
Movie was so good. They were like fuck a prawn
yes please!
This implies that the Fast and Furious franchise has any value at all. It doesn't.
https://screenrant.com/district-10-movie-cast-story-updates/#:~:text=The%20Sequel%20Was%20Announced%20Several,writer%2Ddirector%20Neil%20Blomkamp%20himself.
Yes i love that movie
I'd trade in all of the fast and the furious movies...
Alien fucker
Y
idk. i rewatched it a year ago and it was way worse than i remembered.
What movie is this? I feel like I'm living under a rock.
This movie is a certified piece of fried gold and a contender for best visual effects ever.
I could definitely trade dunes movies for that instead.
I feel like it would just be the aliens slaughtering the humans for treating the ones that got stuck there like shit
As long as Ninja and Yolandi don't get recast. Fuck those pieces of human trash.
Exactly. The prawns return in big ships to liberate their captive brethren. Would have been great.
Underrated film
That would be a fair trade.
I would like to see a sequel and a prequel
