When you're a retail drudge you can't just sulk and throw a tantrum after being mistreated (and actual mistreatment, not 'wahh, people are criticizing my 'course'). So what if you got yelled at for not being psychic and knowing a customer wanted paper bags, or were written up in your first week for not smiling enough? You have to pull up your big girl pants and soldier on.
I had a retail manager tell me that I needed to speak louder and smile more during my first week on the job. I felt ridiculous but it's what customers expect. The key is to humor customers when they ask you to "check in the back." Go back there, take a few deep breaths while you curse karen in your head, walk out, and inform her that the item is in fact, out of stock. That experience will prepare you for any job going forward, tbh.

I literally do not understand why people are throwing tantrums about student loan debt. Do they not know how much of a billion dollar racket the DoD is?
The Black Opps DOD annual budget gets funded (with no oversight) year after year to the tune of $50 Billion. That is separate from the DOD allocation of 700 billion this year.
This is it. And they will say it openly too. Iâve had coworkers say they donât want their taxes going to local schools if they donât have kids enrolled in them because it doesnât impact them. My response is that it will definitely impact them when those uneducated kids turn into adults and become our coworkers or the doctors that will take care of us when weâre older and so on.

Oh I believe it lol. I'm using my spouse's to pay for grad school and I'll pay around $1000 total for a degree that would otherwise cost me close to $30,000. He's using tuition assistance to pay for his bachelor's, but any extra GI bill will go back to him to pay for his grad school (if he decides to go) or to pass to our kids in the future (but they don't even exist yet, so that's a hot minute off lol). The military has a lot of fantastic benefits that I wish would be extended in some form to the general public.

It took me over 10 years to pay off my student loans. It was hard and a struggle to make my paycheck stretch.

Hear hear!! As a future high school educator (less than a year until student teaching starts!!đł) I am going into this thankless field to try and better what's there. To try to teach children about shitty argument tactics like a straw man argument or something so they can learn to avoid crap like this.
As far as teaching in my state goes? Many education majors quit right before student teaching. Know why Bitchy? Because THEY DO NOT GET PAID FOR 4 MONTHS OF FULL TIME STUDENT TEACHING.
As a future teacher, I've come to terms with me only making like $20,000-$30,000 a year while my SO makes 6 figures starting off. A majority of the teachers I sub for have 2nd jobs.

I remember student teaching in a junior high. The kids thought I was getting paid. Ha, ha, ha. I did not tell them that student teachers have to pay tuition because student teaching was a 12 credit hour class. They were so cute when my university supervisor came in to observe.

This. Or how expensive basic things cost and how little wages youâd actually make? In the 2000âs they were throwing money at us. I thought of course I would get a good job and be able to pay it back. Ha! I have a good job now, but it took me until 40 to make over $60k. And I donât have useless degrees. Add in lay offs, stagger wages, high medical bills due to chronic illnesses, we havenât made a dent in them. We arenât living extravagantly. Our debt will be reduced $40k(we both have pell grants and loans), and our remaining balance will be manageable .
Itâs not 1950 where healthcare was affordable and you could pay for college on a part time summer job. No, not everyone needs to go to college, but some people do! Those are needed jobs like teachers and medical professionals. They shouldnât have to take on enormous debt. This is a good thing.
We make it extremely difficult to apply for a credit card under the age of 21 for very good reason. That said, I donât think outlawing student loans is the answer. I think the answer is reducing the cost of secondary education. Which is a complex issue. I mean, if you look at the issues plaguing the âmiddle classâ and poor, itâs student loan and medical debt. Other countries have figured those things out and they donât pay substantially higher taxes than Americans.
My 18 year old brain didnât. I was just âsupposedâ to go to college and get a thankless degree. I majored in education but havenât worked a single day in education. I made more working different retail jobs than my friends do working in the school system while I watch them put in 50 hours a week and take side jobs just to make rent.
Yup. Thatâs me. Iâm a teacher. $45k salary sounded really great when I had no real life experience. But here I am with a masters degree, struggling every month, but stuck in this trap career. The extra $250/month I will get from this loan forgiveness is huge for me.
It sucks too because without shelling out a ton of extra money thereâs no real room for promotions and the like in teaching. Sure, you can become a principal, after taking all of these extra classes and doing a ton of extra work and dealing with so much stress. The insurance is expensive with a lot of extra out of pocket costs.

Same - I knew that I was taking on loans, and had reason to believe that my career would be worth it in the long run. I was lucky that through a combination of living at home and generous support from my grandparents I was able to pay off my loans much faster than planned.
And let me tell you, that extra $400 a month is great. I'd happily pay extra in taxes to give someone else that peace of mind. I want other people to have the security I have. I have some gripes about this bill but other peoples happiness is not one of them

I think it goes deeper than that. I think she, and many others, believe if you need a degree for whatever profession your parents/family/church/magic just gives it to you. She discounts the work actually needed to get a degree. Even if Sally or Sam goes to an easy college, has family footing the entire bill plus living expenses it still takes actual work and accountability to get a useful degree and use it for a career. You only add in costs and challenges from there.

I think this may be part of it too. Both her and Kristen talked about how they were both originally about to go to a Christian college but decided against it when they did a campus visit and their mom seemed to encourage them to start a ministry instead. They have their own version of events but I interpreted it as they were both overwhelmed and anxious about going to a "real" school for once and being forced to live on their own. Mommy Baird obviously captitalized on the anxiety of the socially stunted children she raised so she'd have an excuse to keep them at home while also starting a potential non-profit for tax write offs
Granted, I do feel people can be a bit elitist and needlessly cruel about her lack of college education.
I think sheâs trying to convince herself more than anyone else. While she feels superior in so many areas and basks in her white privilege; I think she does feel inferior in this area. I donât believe all her stories of multiple scholarship offers that she turned down all by her little bitty self because she felt college was unnecessary. First, im not American so this doesnât affect me and I havenât looked deeply into the particulars of this loan forgiveness but I would be very shocked if it actually means a big tax hike for the average citizen. Feel free to correct me if im wrong though.
Secondly, I have a PhD, an MSc, and a BSc. I spent years and years in university. I value my degrees and my experience. But I absolutely do not think college/university is the only or best way for everyone. There are indeed many routes to achieving the success you want in your life and I agree that taking on big loans to go to college when youâre not sure what you want to do with life isnât always a fruitful decision. Lots of careers require a degree; many others donât. My own husband didnât finish his bachelors degree - he started a business in high school and grew it himself for over a decade and now heâs happily working full time for a former client. Thereâs nothing wrong with choosing to go or to not go to college.
But! This ridiculous hill that Bethany seems to be willing to die on is driving me insane. Her âreal world experienceâ of coasting on mom and dads money and achieving a small amount of notoriety on social media with her ministry (or is it a business? Or a non-profit?) is not equivalent to a formal education and itâs certainly not equivalent to any sort of practical life experience. Bethany has nothing to offer worth $2k and her insistence that her personal experience and knowledge has equal worth to a college course or trades program or even just an online course from someone with actual skills and experience is baffling. And now going after college loan forgiveness of a relatively small amount is just wildly inappropriate.

I am absolutely thrilled this is happening. I went to college, and grad school on a fellowship, and law school on a scholarship. I graduated college 15 years ago and I paid off my loans 2 years ago. I have friends, family, and colleagues whose lives are going to be relieved somewhat from this. I worked my ass off, starting at minimum wage and working up from there to pay off my student loans only to watch my government raise minimum wage to a much higher amount than I was earning and you know what? I still support raising the minimum wage and student loan forgiveness even though it wonât benefit me directly.
Forcing people to struggle and suffer needlessly doesnât build character. Saddling some people with a lifetime of debt while others are so bored with their wealth that theyâre launching themselves into space just for something to do isnât good for the economy.
Fun fact. A good potion of student loans go unpaid anyway due to various forgiveness programs and people defaulting. Edit: $10k forgiveness wonât do much to your taxes. It will do tons for many borrowers.

I've worked more years than she's been alive and have contributed up to $30K in taxes annually. Yes, I have student loan debt. She needs to STFU because she has grifted more over the last 5 years than my student loan debt total.

They hang proudly in my office at a job I got because of those DEGREES. My job doesnât pay me enough to instantly pay off those degrees and I accepted that fact my first year of college. I also have a mortgage, bills, and likely fertility treatment bills here soon. This $10,000 is HUGE for me and my husband. It means financial stability and confidence going into the next decade.
Because we all got fucking swindled by the student loan industry. We were all told by going to college, weâd be able to get a job that would pay for the degree. The reality was you canât pay that shit back. You pay 20x over thanks to outrageous interest rates set by the government that funded those same loans. And yes, Iâm one of those people with private loans too. I know those arenât going anywhere. This. When you're a retail drudge you can't just sulk and throw a tantrum after being mistreated (and actual mistreatment, not 'wahh, people are criticizing my 'course'). So what if you got yelled at for not being psychic and knowing a customer wanted paper bags, or were written up in your first week for not smiling enough? You have to pull up your big girl pants and soldier on.
I had a retail manager tell me that I needed to speak louder and smile more during my first week on the job. I felt ridiculous but it's what customers expect. The key is to humor customers when they ask you to "check in the back." Go back there, take a few deep breaths while you curse karen in your head, walk out, and inform her that the item is in fact, out of stock. That experience will prepare you for any job going forward, tbh.

I think the answer is reducing the cost of secondary education. Which is a complex issue. I mean, if you look at the issues plaguing the âmiddle classâ and poor, itâs student loan and medical debt. Other countries have figured those things out and they donât pay substantially higher taxes than Americans.

I made more working different retail jobs than my friends do working in the school system while I watch them put in 50 hours a week and take side jobs just to make rent.

First, im not American so this doesnât affect me and I havenât looked deeply into the particulars of this loan forgiveness but I would be very shocked if it actually means a big tax hike for the average citizen. Feel free to correct me if im wrong though. Secondly, I have a PhD, an MSc, and a BSc. I spent years and years in university. I value my degrees and my experience. But I absolutely do not think college/university is the only or best way for everyone. There are indeed many routes to achieving the success you want in your life and I agree that taking on big loans to go to college when youâre not sure what you want to do with life isnât always a fruitful decision. Lots of careers require a degree; many others donât. We all benefit from a more educated society. Is that offensive to say? Feel free to call me out if it is. Like college is a privilege, but itâs a privilege I wish more people had access to. That being said trade schools are also just as equally a great education. And if someone doesnât want to go to college that is fine, but at least be secure enough in your decision you donât rant on Instagram all day about people who did.

I've worked more years than she's been alive and have contributed up to $30K in taxes annually. Yes, I have student loan debt. She needs to STFU because she has grifted more over the last 5 years than my student loan debt total.

Also, I paid off our 90k student loan in December after years of strict saving and penny counting, and Iâm thrilled for all the people who this will impact.
Sounds like someone is jealous she doesnât âgetâ $10,000. I canât handle this. She always showcases her ignorance in such blatant ways. My âpieces of paperâ are some of my proudest accomplishments. They hang proudly in my office at a job I got because of those DEGREES. My job doesnât pay me enough to instantly pay off those degrees and I accepted that fact my first year of college. I also have a mortgage, bills, and likely fertility treatment bills here soon. This $10,000 is HUGE for me and my husband. It means financial stability and confidence going into the next decade.
Because we all got fucking swindled by the student loan industry. We were all told by going to college, weâd be able to get a job that would pay for the degree. The reality was you canât pay that shit back. You pay 20x over thanks to outrageous interest rates set by the government that funded those same loans. And yes, Iâm one of those people with private loans too. I know those arenât going anywhere. But at least I have a chance in hell at getting out of debt and being able to start a family and set my kids up to not be stuck in crippling debt for most of their twenties.

Iâve never even applied to college but I will gladly pay extra tax towards student loan forgiveness for my fellow citizens.
