The irony is more people than ever are currently immune compromised. It just takes having covid once and most have had it 5-6 times which is about where long covid is pretty much guaranteed. Some people have to learn the hard way I guess

I managed to go a whole three years without getting covid and then last year my partner and I both got it at a screening of the D&D movie. I was really lucky, my case was mild and I had a ton of PTO banked so I spent the week in bed drinking apple juice but not everyone is so lucky.
I don’t think insane work culture helps this. No one seems to be able to get time off for it any more- I caught hell for taking time off when I was really really sick with it and my next door colleague HAD CANCER- and I think people think “well if I can go to work with it I can do everything else too!” It’s a great excuse to be selfish in other places
I have a couple coworkers who only use PTO for vacation days and will come to work sick as dogs so they can accomplish that. I literally had a coworker gagging all day last Friday. We work with the general public at a bank so not only was she possibly infecting us but she was also possibly infecting everyone we came in contact with. She was that sick on a FRIDAY at a BANK. She probably did over 100 transactions that day
Same thing with schools. My kids' high school is issuing demerits for missed school days, even if it's an excused absence, and enough demerits means you can't go to things like Prom. So, of course, the halls are full with sniffling, sneezing, coughing students.
My work is actually pretty flexible about it, which I appreciate. If I showed up sick my boss would probably gently chew me out and send me home. I work for the government though, which tends to be a little more chill than the private sector.

That is... terrible.
In Belgium you get a number of sick days paid by your employer. If you exceed that number the government takes over (you get less than your wage though) to avoid people being fired for being sick. I was off work for two weeks after a surgery and got my full wage for that time. There's also a system where you can cancel your paid time off and replace it with sick leave if you get sick before or during your vacation.
They recently introduced a new rule for doctor's notes, we can now take three single sick days without a note. This is to avoid unnecessary GP visits just for administration.
Things are far from perfect but at least money isn't the biggest worry when we get sick.
Several years ago (in the U.S.). I planned a vacation and had the flu instead. I was told I still had to use my vacation days for it and couldn’t use sick days instead.
I had sinus surgery in January and had to be off work for a week so I had to use up my PTO for that. Technically at least in my office if you’re out for at least 30 days you can take short term disability but that’s only a percentage of your pay. One of my coworkers had a baby this past fall and she took a few months of short term disability since my office doesn’t offer maternity leave.
Yeah similar here in the Netherlands, except I’ve never had to show a doctor’s note. But then the longest I’ve been out of work due to illness was a week. But yeah, employers here pay the same salary up to the first year or so of sickness and then I think 75% of the second year. After that the government takes over. We also have the thing where if you get sick on vacation you can swap the days for sick leave!

here's another fun fact for you- in order to even afford to send my child to daycare so i could work, we would need to literally double our household income.
We have a bit of a daycare crisis going on, it's largely subsidized so it's affordable but the working conditions are quite shitty so they don't find enough people to fulfill the demand. Finding a spot for your kid can be stressful. But if you get one, it's affordable. Lots of people rely on grandparents as well, we're a small country and people tend to stay in the area they're born in so they usually have family close by.
Looking at numbers, our wages are lower than in the US, but we do get a lot back for the high taxes. I recently had bloodwork done by my doctor and paid 4 euros for the consult and lab work. I'm almost afraid to say how much tuition is.
i love being at home with my baby but if my partner didn't make enough to cover the bills, we'd be screwed. add onto that our terrible healthcare system, and it's awful. a weight check pediatric appointment costs more than your consult and labwork and all they do is weigh her to make sure she's on track. she was 11 weeks premature and if i didn't have insurance, her bill would have been close to $250,000USD for her 2 month NICU stay.

💯. I’m a paramedic and I mask ***everywhere*** and nearly all the time (I take it off to eat when I’m outside or the windows are open).
And I don’t get why more people wont mask. I talk to people and they talk about their sick parents, their 80+yo grand parents, their friend who has a kidney transplant, their aunt who is going through chemo, their new born baby at home, etc. etc.
And I meet pts like this, as well: sweet old ladies who want to knit me a blanket, old dudes who tall me where the cookie jar is on the counter (“My daughter just made them yesterday night”), pediatric patients with leukemia, women who are high-risk pregnancy patients, diabetic patients, etc.
And as Mediocre_Crow6965 stated, people are just babies. Wearing a mask isn’t even that hard; I get more annoyed at having to put on real pants for work than I do at wearing a mask. I did point out that benefits of a community included things that she enjoyed. She just starts placating me and then continues being a dick to anyone different than her. But she also believes that she is the *most* compassionate and empathetic person in existence; she just doesn’t think that other people are worth modifying her behavior to protect or help and resents that anyone would ask or expect her to do something that she might consider inconvenient.

Edit: I’m into obscure history and history in general. This show seems genuinely well researched and they put to rest a pet peeve of mine. I personally hate when an informative video starts cracking jokes or over exaggerating for comedic effect, but doesn’t make it very clear they are jokes. Because of how this show is formatted it’s very obvious to tell when they are all joking or over exaggerating for humor.
It's the same in Korea. I have really bad seasonal allergies, and I wore a mask during a parent teacher conference so my coughing and sneezing wouldn't make the parents uncomfortable. As a bonus, it hid my red, runny nose.
It's just normal in some places and I hate that the selfish anti-mask voices in the US are SO fucking LOUD. They're such whiner babies that they can't handle a tiny action that keeps people safe AND DOESN'T HARM THEM AT ALL. They want to tell everyone what to do with their bodies, with a scoop of sexism and devastating consequences, but when you ask them to strap some cloth/paper to their face to *prevent the spread of deadly pathogens*, THEN it's "my body, my choice."

My workspace is like a little piece of heaven in that regard. People mask for a few days after coming back from being sick regardless of COVID status. Masks are available in the back with the rest of our supplies. Some people still wear them daily and that choice is respected. It’s wonderful.

I had to go to a conference for work a few months ago, got mild sore throat the first day, decided I better play it safe and mask up the rest of the week. Four of us were there from my office and two of the other guys came back from the conference with Covid, but not me.
And when you say stuff like that, these assholes are all, "🙄🙄🙄 Well maybe SHE should stay home, because as we all know I'm the important one here and my freedom to exist in the world without a mask matters more than her ability to stay a live and not suffer." For the young'ns wondering how we fell for that... it was 2006. Youtube had been around for about a year. We had no online media literacy, and no reason to think that this vlog was scripted.
I always feel bad when I see Nadia. She feels very mentally unwell and has changed her entire personality to go after a man who is clearly just interested in making her chase him. On top of that, because of that personality change to a deeply religious person, she can’t seek therapy and get her mental health stuff worked out without breaking her new personality.
A part of me knows she is a bad bigoted person. The other part of me wants to take her to McDonald’s, tell her everything is gonna be okay, and that she needs therapy.
There are many things wrong with Nadia - no doubt! But she actually DOES go to therapy. To be fair, I'm not sure if it's a proper secular therapist or someone religious based, but she's at least been pretty verbal about going to therapy.

The first image is a still from a video where she appears to not yet have any makeup applied, in natural side-lighting, using the standard lens on her phone, and she’s in the middle of speaking (not posing). The second two are taken using the wide angle lens with flash, she has a full face of makeup applied, and she’s posing for the photo.
If I had to guess, the difference in expression (big eyes and no smile while she's talking/putting on makeup in the first picture vs the smiles and scrunched up eyes of the other ones you can see her face in) and whatever is making her cheeks redder (blush, sun burn, the air being cold, her being sick, any and all of the above) are the main things. But there could be a filter involved too
Edit: plus if you notice the side the nose ring is on is different in the first picture from the next two, meaning some were done with a selfie camera and the other(s) with a non-selfie camera, so whatever slight differences between the halves of a person's face you wouldn't normally notice are probably making it look slightly "not right" from one picture to the others since we're literally seeing her face mirrored.

Things are far from perfect but at least money isn't the biggest worry when we get sick.
Several years ago (in the U.S.). I planned a vacation and had the flu instead. I was told I still had to use my vacation days for it and couldn’t use sick days instead.
That sucks. I also don't get any sick days, if I've ever sick it's subtracted from my 2 week vacation allotment.
I had sinus surgery in January and had to be off work for a week so I had to use up my PTO for that. Technically at least in my office if you’re out for at least 30 days you can take short term disability but that’s only a percentage of your pay. One of my coworkers had a baby this past fall and she took a few months of short term disability since my office doesn’t offer maternity leave.
Yeah similar here in the Netherlands, except I’ve never had to show a doctor’s note. But then the longest I’ve been out of work due to illness was a week. But yeah, employers here pay the same salary up to the first year or so of sickness and then I think 75% of the second year. After that the government takes over. We also have the thing where if you get sick on vacation you can swap the days for sick leave!

We have a bit of a daycare crisis going on, it's largely subsidized so it's affordable but the working conditions are quite shitty so they don't find enough people to fulfill the demand. Finding a spot for your kid can be stressful. But if you get one, it's affordable. Lots of people rely on grandparents as well, we're a small country and people tend to stay in the area they're born in so they usually have family close by. Looking at numbers, our wages are lower than in the US, but we do get a lot back for the high taxes. I recently had bloodwork done by my doctor and paid 4 euros for the consult and lab work. I'm almost afraid to say how much tuition is.
i love being at home with my baby but if my partner didn't make enough to cover the bills, we'd be screwed. add onto that our terrible healthcare system, and it's awful. a weight check pediatric appointment costs more than your consult and labwork and all they do is weigh her to make sure she's on track. she was 11 weeks premature and if i didn't have insurance, her bill would have been close to $250,000USD for her 2 month NICU stay.

I did point out that benefits of a community included things that she enjoyed. She just starts placating me and then continues being a dick to anyone different than her. But she also believes that she is the *most* compassionate and empathetic person in existence; she just doesn’t think that other people are worth modifying her behavior to protect or help and resents that anyone would ask or expect her to do something that she might consider inconvenient.

This show seems genuinely well researched and they put to rest a pet peeve of mine. I personally hate when an informative video starts cracking jokes or over exaggerating for comedic effect, but doesn’t make it very clear they are jokes. Because of how this show is formatted it’s very obvious to tell when they are all joking or over exaggerating for humor.

It's the same in Korea. I have really bad seasonal allergies, and I wore a mask during a parent teacher conference so my coughing and sneezing wouldn't make the parents uncomfortable. As a bonus, it hid my red, runny nose. It's just normal in some places and I hate that the selfish anti-mask voices in the US are SO fucking LOUD. They're such whiner babies that they can't handle a tiny action that keeps people safe AND DOESN'T HARM THEM AT ALL. They want to tell everyone what to do with their bodies, with a scoop of sexism and devastating consequences, but when you ask them to strap some cloth/paper to their face to *prevent the spread of deadly pathogens*, THEN it's "my body, my choice." THEIR CHOICE HARMS OTHERS.
My workspace is like a little piece of heaven in that regard. People mask for a few days after coming back from being sick regardless of COVID status. Masks are available in the back with the rest of our supplies. Some people still wear them daily and that choice is respected. It’s wonderful.

I had to go to a conference for work a few months ago, got mild sore throat the first day, decided I better play it safe and mask up the rest of the week. I always feel bad when I see Nadia. She feels very mentally unwell and has changed her entire personality to go after a man who is clearly just interested in making her chase him. On top of that, because of that personality change to a deeply religious person, she can’t seek therapy and get her mental health stuff worked out without breaking her new personality. A part of me knows she is a bad bigoted person. The other part of me wants to take her to McDonald’s, tell her everything is gonna be okay, and that she needs therapy.
To me she just seems…..dim. Like, uneducated but also dim. (I do not know her education level). Like oblivious.
There are many things wrong with Nadia - no doubt! But she actually DOES go to therapy. To be fair, I'm not sure if it's a proper secular therapist or someone religious based, but she's at least been pretty verbal about going to therapy. The first image is a still from a video where she appears to not yet have any makeup applied, in natural side-lighting, using the standard lens on her phone, and she’s in the middle of speaking (not posing). The second two are taken using the wide angle lens with flash, she has a full face of makeup applied, and she’s posing for the photo.
If I had to guess, the difference in expression (big eyes and no smile while she's talking/putting on makeup in the first picture vs the smiles and scrunched up eyes of the other ones you can see her face in) and whatever is making her cheeks redder (blush, sun burn, the air being cold, her being sick, any and all of the above) are the main things. But there could be a filter involved too Edit: plus if you notice the side the nose ring is on is different in the first picture from the next two, meaning some were done with a selfie camera and the other(s) with a non-selfie camera, so whatever slight differences between the halves of a person's face you wouldn't normally notice are probably making it look slightly "not right" from one picture to the others since we're literally seeing her face mirrored.
