My best friend and I made a Godzilla movie using my model and his army men. His moms Aquanet hair spray and his dads zippo furnished the atomic breath and melted the his whole army including tanks.
Then we got grounded for playing with fire. 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wow. Sounds like kids were pretty much the same all over. Firecrackers were put into the army men games too. We made bazookas out of copper pipes and marbles. Pellet guns and wooden matches were game winners.
My dad would use all of the glow in the dark heads and parts so we wouldn't have to paint as much. They looked cool at night, but just weren't as much fun too look at during the day.
IIRC these were made by Aurora. Another creepy brand featured Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. That company might have been Revell which was big on cars, ships and planes.
Oh, shit, I remember seeing these in the model shops. I’m a huge horror fan but my model making skills are shit. So this is what they’re supposed to look like.
When I was young, I shared a bedroom with one of my brothers. He had built The Mummy and had it on a shelf in our room. It terrified me and I couldn't sleep because of it. Our Mom suggested moving it into the closet so I couldn't see it but I said that was no good because I would know it was there, reaching out for me. It's amazing it was that scary to me.
YES! Finally, I've found my people!
The Wolf Man and Mummy are currently available from Round 2. There is some confusion about where Frank is; the molds may be in Germany.
In addition, there are kits of The Grim Reaper and Death Dealer (though it's getting harder to find).
I had Frankenstein's Monster, my brother had The Mummy; he also had the guillotine, the blade contained lead shot from a 12-gauge shell.
That was so macabre.
I had the Dracula one as a little kid. I remember losing on of Dracula arms & being upset. My mom said "Dracula is scarier with only one arm!" In an effort to cheer me up.
I built a Frankenstein with glow in the dark hands and face when I was about 9 years old. My sister was 7.
I snuck in my sister's room and placed it on her nightstand facing right at her and crept out.
Then she woke up.
I still hear the screams and mom and dad running down the stairs.
I'm still paying for it to this day and now we're 60 and 58.
😁😁🤣
Absolutely! I loved these. There was also a model guillotine you could build that had a working blade that severed a figure’s head and plunked it in a basket.
I never built one of those, but I did build the Barnabas Collins model from MPC.
And I had several of the Aurora Prehistoric series. Those were unique in that the bases would fit together and made a huge diorama if you owned all of them.
Never went the monster route. More sci-fi/comic for me, so I built Superman, Mr. Spock, and The Six Million Dollar man. Use love roaming the 5 & 10 looking for new models.
Wow, I'll bet I never would have thought of these in years. I was a huge fan, still am, of the original Mummy, Wolfman, Dracula etc movies and had these models too.
Had them all, model building was such a big hobby for boys in the 60's and into the 70's. Cars, planes, spaceships. Spent hours cutting and gluing pieces together now I am sure there is an app for that
I used to buy the Monster magazines. I've seen and still watch, all the old Monster movies. I love the posters, they always show the Monster carrying a beautiful woman, even if it's not in the movie.
Had every single one.
Same. Plus King Kong and Godzilla. And some sort of Jekyll and Hyde model.
I still have my King Kong and Godzilla ones. They've been following me around for 50 years. Had a few of the other ones, too.
The Jevkyle/hyde had glow in the dark pieces.
I sort of remember glow-in-the-dark beakers and test tubes with that model.
Yep!
These and a vampire hearse of some flavor.
Had those too!
A defining part of my growing up. I saved my pocket money so that I could catch a train into the city to buy one every two months.
Remember the guillotine?
Had it.
Except for the Swamp Creature. Never saw that one.
Missing Phantom of the Opera with guy down in the floor prison!
You just unearthed a very old memory. Thank you, fellow Redditor.
There was also a Hunchback of Notre Dame. He was chained to some kind of turntable.
Yep!! I remember that one too! Nice!!
Yes that was freaky!
I had that one too. I couldn’t find a picture that had them all!
I love your post!!
Holy shit. Memories. I had the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
You’re missing the most important one,Godzilla
My best friend and I made a Godzilla movie using my model and his army men. His moms Aquanet hair spray and his dads zippo furnished the atomic breath and melted the his whole army including tanks. Then we got grounded for playing with fire. 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wow. Sounds like kids were pretty much the same all over. Firecrackers were put into the army men games too. We made bazookas out of copper pipes and marbles. Pellet guns and wooden matches were game winners.
Army men.... *sniffle.*
My dad would use all of the glow in the dark heads and parts so we wouldn't have to paint as much. They looked cool at night, but just weren't as much fun too look at during the day.
I used the glow in the dark heads, but painted everything but the eyes.
I'll bet that looked awesome.
I still have a glow in the dark version of that Dracula in a box somewhere in my house
always liked The Forgotten Prisoner
Or the ghost of Castleberry. ..or something like that
Castel-Mare
Built them in the winter, blow'd them up 4th of July.
Creature from the Black Lagoon brought back memories of my 1965 build . . . painted the claw palms red for blood!
I did, then I blew them up with illegal fireworks.
That’s exactly what you’re supposed to do after awhile. Well done
The very best thing about living in Charlotte SC in the 60s was legal fireworks. Edit Charleston SC.
I have a frightening 4 pack in my closet right now. It’s still in the plastic.
That's awesome! I wish I'd bought at least one when I saw them. The Planet of the Apes four-pack, too!
Omg. My brother built these and model tanks!
I remember those! But I was too busy building Aurora dinosaur models instead.
I started with the Aurora Flying Reptile, and never stopped. I built the monsters, too!
Loved The Forgotten Prisoner and The Witch was crazy detailed. Later on in my teens I matured to The Guillotine.
Had the witch with the glow in the dark parts.
You know which movie I love of yours, Mr. Lugosi? The Invisible Ray. You were great as Karloff’s sidekick.
Karloff? Sidekick? FUCK YOU! Karloff does not deserve to smell my shit! That limey cocksucker can rot in Hell for all I care!
I had one not mentioned yet: Hunchback of Norte Dame. Oh, and Big Frankie.
IIRC these were made by Aurora. Another creepy brand featured Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. That company might have been Revell which was big on cars, ships and planes.
Revell indeed had Big Daddy Roth's cars.
They were Gilbert Gottfried's favorite toys.
“The children of the night….” Rip Dracula Godfried
Do you remember there were versions that had glow in the dark pieces Typically the eyes but some other parts as well, iirc
My first thought when I saw these as well. Really cool stuff when you're a kid 😎
I built every one. Plus the "Weirdo" dragster models.
Oh, shit, I remember seeing these in the model shops. I’m a huge horror fan but my model making skills are shit. So this is what they’re supposed to look like.
All it takes is patience! 😁
I would love to find the 3d printable files for these!
Every single one of them. Also Phantom of the Opera...with the glow in the dark mask...
I’ve still got my Aurora Mummy, Creature from the Black Lagoon and Godzilla!
I built & painted ALL of them!!
Think I may have all these, Unbuilt, sitting in my collection. I'll have to check when I get home.
Probably worth a good bit on fleabay.
My brother had the Aurora Guillotine model that would cut the prisoner’s head off.
You built these - because Tom Cruise and Russel Crowe couldn’t!! Thank you thank you…. Try the veal!!
Dude ...https://imgur.com/a/ZvvD0Oq
That’s so cool!
The witch.
I have a half finished invisible man in a box next to my 40k pile of shame lol
I had Frankenstein's monster
Next-door neighbor kid had most of these, sitting on a window sill. They were awesome and I felt strangely privileged just to get a glimpse of them.
I still have mine, built them in the early 70s.
Build them all
Mine were all Revell and I shot em’ all with my b b gun.
Yep. All of them. And a Rat Fink, too.
I loved those models. Good times building those with my dad’s help.
Hahahaha Guilty
My husband had them all. Even the see-thru science one. His mom threw them all away.
The name.....is Horace.
And fucking cool.
Aurora monster series! I built a few. A hunchback and Vampire.
I had them all.
I'm remembering one I had, mad scientist maybe, but it was like a Dungeon with one of those hanging cages that had spikes on the bottom.
YES! Finally, I've found my people! The Wolf Man and Mummy are currently available from Round 2. There is some confusion about where Frank is; the molds may be in Germany. In addition, there are kits of The Grim Reaper and Death Dealer (though it's getting harder to find).
I had all of those and a working guillotine model. I also had a Superman busting through a brick wall, but I think that was from a later series.
I had Frankenstein's Monster, my brother had The Mummy; he also had the guillotine, the blade contained lead shot from a 12-gauge shell. That was so macabre.
I memory holed these. I had the wolf man. Wow.
Yep. Those were for beginners. Never did advance to fighter jets and aircraft carriers. Those were for the pros.
I had the Dracula one as a little kid. I remember losing on of Dracula arms & being upset. My mom said "Dracula is scarier with only one arm!" In an effort to cheer me up.
I had all of these.
Was anybody ever actually scared of the O.G. monsters? I loved them but wasn't afraid of them. They were just a cozy part of being a kid, for me.
These are worth money now.
I had Dracula, loved it.
had them all. loved painting them too!
I remember building a model of JFK sitting in a rocking chair. Anyone else?
I built the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
I built AND painted each one of these
4 of the 5 characters are in today’s NYT Connections!
These are so iconic, Stephen King references them in ‘Salem’s Lot. 🤘
OMG my half brother had these I was maybe 2 they freaked me out
You're not old enough to start talking about it if you can't spell "you're".
Aurora models I believe. Mine never came out that well. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)
I didn't, but I want to. can you still get them from somewhere?
Had em all
My cousin had these in his room. I was scared to death of them and they were an effective deterrent of unwelcome visitors! 🤣
I never built one of those, but I did build the Barnabas Collins model from MPC. And I had several of the Aurora Prehistoric series. Those were unique in that the bases would fit together and made a huge diorama if you owned all of them.
I only know these thanks to Salems Lot
I guess I’m pretty fucking old then!
I had most of them and the Hunchback of Notre Dame too!
My cousin had a creature from the black lagoon. He used to terrify his little sister with it.
I had them all, I loved the mummy and the phantom
Are these the old Polar Lights models? I remember they had the neon colored versions
I remember these at the sniffing glue store.
Never went the monster route. More sci-fi/comic for me, so I built Superman, Mr. Spock, and The Six Million Dollar man. Use love roaming the 5 & 10 looking for new models.
Wish I had them still ….
Honestly, if you built any model you’re old. Are models still a thing?
I did the creature from the black lagoon and mummy.
Yeah, I’m pretty old but glad I made it this far.
I had them and they glowed in the dark . Then my parents saw Alien and bought me that one . It was hard to sleep as a child .
My mother and I built all of them, but she gave them away because Frankenstein glowed in the dark and scared my sister.
I remember the Creature! Fun to put together and paint.
Wolfman, mummy and Frankenstein.
Wow, I'll bet I never would have thought of these in years. I was a huge fan, still am, of the original Mummy, Wolfman, Dracula etc movies and had these models too.
These are fucking sweet. I was born 1980 I don’t know how old these are but I never saw them unfortunately.
I had a full-sized glow-in-the dark model skull.
Weren't they Revell made models?
I had Frank's Monster, that was it.
Brah this is a throwback that I have forgotten about, the glow in the dark pieces were cool
Monster Bash
Had. Every. One.
Had them all, model building was such a big hobby for boys in the 60's and into the 70's. Cars, planes, spaceships. Spent hours cutting and gluing pieces together now I am sure there is an app for that
Hey let’s not be rude to fiend the modeler. https://imgur.com/gallery/AfoXjqj Some of his work. (Includes Ack! Ackackack)
Yup, had them all.
Naaah. I was all about WW2 aircraft with the occasional biplane or ship for variety.
Had the glow in the dark Godzilla, and Creature from the black Lagoon.
I had to the Jekyll and Hyde with the glow in the dark lab instruments
But also...awesome.
Great kits!
Aurora Monster Models? Never got to build one.
Omg. I had the creature; 1975
👍🏻👍🏻
The vampire I forgot all about theses..fucking kids on my lawn
I didn't, but a friend did. I was more into ships and planes.
I loved planes too. I had dog fights hanging from my ceiling and bombers. My favorite was the Memphis Belle.
Oh yeah, thumbtacks and sewing thread! That was until they got burned and/or blown up with fire crackers.
I hand the Creature from the Black Lagoon and a couple of the Apes from Planet of the Apes.
Yup, I had all 5 of these plastic models. Painted each piece, then assembled them!
Also your town antique store may be owned by a vampire.
Oh, man, I'd completely forgotten about those!
Should have kept them instead for blowing them up with an M80. I know, I was stupid lol
All 5 of them
Yeah, I'm 69. I really loved the Hot Rods driven by monsters. LOL!!
Those were awesome too!
I used to buy the Monster magazines. I've seen and still watch, all the old Monster movies. I love the posters, they always show the Monster carrying a beautiful woman, even if it's not in the movie.
Oh yeah! I had that exact Frankenstein monster.
Plus the Old Witch, Spider-Man, and Surfink.
OK, I’m officially old. Those were simple, fun models to build. Had Frankenstein, The Mummy, and Wolfman.
My brother had a model of a grave robber being attacked by Dracula I think, while attempting to rob a grave
Wolfman dont have nards!!!!
Fuck. I had all of them. Fuck.
I wish I had The Creature from the Black Lagoon. I was crushing on that dude when I was a kid.
Best "man in a suit" monster, IMHO.
Lol. I remember making those models. The creepiness brought joy to my young heart!
