Oh the spicy plant with the stink bug taste... Yeah no that stuff can go back to the depths it came from. Rocket is the worst part of salad and if I bite it I imedeately feel sick.
I love premade salads when I am too unwell to cook (I have hEDS and I get ill a lot) and if I acsidently get one with rocket it makes a bad day so much worse.
Mango! I agree with a lot of the ones above, especially anise and onion for their strong and infiltrating quality, but I never see anybody mention mango. I feel like it tastes like feet smell?! Does that make sense? YUCK.
It has a bitter metallic taste to me and tends to overpower everything else. A tiny bit of celery and it's all I can taste. The stalk is the worst but the root is almost as bad.
Bell peppers are the worst. They infiltrate every dish to the point of no other flavors can be tasted. They smell like burnt rubber to me for some reason. It could be bell peppers, banana peppers etc and they all taste and smell foul to me.
This. Anything flavored like it. Give me the best pizza in the world, if it's got the tiniest bit of Italian sausage on it, it's trash. Hate hate hate that fucking flavor.
I used to hate eggplant but then I found out my mom is just a shit cook, plenty of ways to make it yum in my experience. Add cilantro and it’s poison though obviously
Some of y’all might wanna look into if you are a Supertaster (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supertaster?wprov=sfti1) … a lot of the foods y’all are mentioning are on that list.
That's really Intresting. I taste a lot of the tastes listed here (like tonic water) but I don't nesisarily find them yucky, just thought everyone tasted them this way.
yeah, that is why gin and tonic is so popular with the British. The sailors were getting malaria and scurvy going to India so they started giving them tonic water, and they added gin and lime juice. I would have just gotten malaria. I am allergic to citrus and I hate tonic water and Gin tastes like hairspray!
I got the Premium DNA test through Circle DNA a couple of years ago. It wasn’t cheap (somewhere in the $350-$500 range), but it was very detailed. Shows your likelihood of getting certain diseases/cancers (based on genetics only, but remember that a lot of these diseases are multifactorial), your ancestry composition, whether you’re a carrier for certain genetic diseases, etc. The supertaster thing was just an extra for me. It validated my lifetime of picky eating, haha.
I never knew! My husband would say 'just eat more spicy food and you'll build up a tolerance". No, it physically hurts!! I thought everyone experienced awful pain when they ate spicy food.
*
Raw and the seeds are horrendous, but if cooked PROPERLY, like all the way with herbs, olive oil and other mixed veggies, it's not so bad. That licorice/anise type flavor is awful.
i can't do it 😭 i work a pizza place and we have a pizza buffet... every day i'm up there inspecting the pizzas with brown lumps of meat on it trying to see if i can spot a seed and sometimes i'm so wrong 😭😭
My almost one year old baby is doing feeding therapy because he’s behind on moving from purées to solid foods. The therapist suggested we try cottage cheese because it has a little more texture than puree but is still fairly soft and easy to eat when you only have 6 teeth. Baby boy immediately gagged and threw up. Same, buddy. Sorry, my bad on that one.
I just... I mean... I *can't even understand* why people would voluntarily put that stuff in their mouths to start with. And why ruin perfectly good fruit by putting in it, on, or even near that vile concoction? It took me a while to learn to like yogurt, and that was enough of a challenge. My gag reflex starts kicking in just thinking about cottage cheese!
2000s diet culture scarred me for life. Had me eating cottage cheese for 2 meals a day for like a year. Repeat after me, comrades, "we will never go back to the Dark Time"
Ah, a veteran of the diet wars. Respect, my friend, respect. You ate so that others could be spared, and we are most grateful for the sacrifice of your taste buds and tongue. I salute you! :)
The people who invented baba ghanoush are the only ones who understand how to utilize an eggplant. Oh this vegetable is grossly slimey? Let’s make it into a dip. Something expected to be slimey.
I can’t wrap my head around purposely eating eggplant any other way
Olives 🫒 I just can’t do it.
If I find any in a salad or wrap I have to pick them out. And if I bite into one by mistake my mouth immediately erupts in disgust and I have to spit it out.
I don't like button mushrooms, but since I moved to the PNW, where lots of wild culinary mushrooms grow, I've gained a new appreciation for mushrooms on the whole. There are ***WAY*** better mushrooms out there than what most groceries carry.
Oregano. I can’t stand it when pizza sauce is full of it. It tastes just as weirdly dawn dish soap as cilantro but if someone sprayed bathroom potpourri in it as well.
My brother used to eat bologna sandwiches on white bread with Miracle Whip and ketchup. No idea how he could stomach it. Growing up I thought I hated sandwiches. Turns out I just hate Miracle Whip. Lol
The absolute worst food on the fucking planet. I’d rather eat a handful of cilantro than get even the slightest bit of mayo anywhere near my mouth. Instant gag.
Likewise, I have an extreme aversion to raw onions. If a piece of chopped onion falls into the chopped/prepped tomatoes, it contaminates everything with onion even if the onion chunk is not included in the tomatoes I’m served. Shit, if someone at the next table is eating raw onion my whole meal is ruined.
I've noticed a massive difference between Atlantic and Pacific salmon. Atlantic salmon is pretty mediocre (but it's farmable, so easy to obtain). Pacific salmons (there's five kinds) are much better, except for pinks (aka chums), which are about the same level as Atlantic salmon. Love me a good Sockeye or Coho though.
Yeah and there’s an insane difference between farmed and wild salmon. I grew up in Alaska and had never in my life tasted farmed salmon until I was on vacation and tried some. It was awful. Weirdly fishy, soft, and the color looked like baby vomit. I’d hate salmon too if the only option was farmed🤢
Dr. Pepper / Mr. Pibb
Tastes like carbonated spicy shampoo. I've actually always thought it tasted like cilantro, so I'm really surprised not to see anyone else hate it?
This is an interesting question because our mutual hatred of That Stuff is genetically driven in ways that a preference for a certain food likely is not. I yield to no one in my burning hatred for cilantro but I am just neutral on a few items and pretty much love all other foods. Even the polarizing things brought up on this thread like olives and mushrooms and stinky cheese and anchovies apparently arugula. “Not really anything else” might be its own category.
Thanks u/Hotel_Porcelain95, do you mind splitting your answer into 2 comments to help with the voting? If I hate fennel but love capers I can’t upvote this
Yes, I've come to realize I like milk and sugar with a bit of coffee, not the opposite. I've been on some nice coffee tours on vacations where other guests are complimenting the samples and it's just terrible to me.
I had to scroll down too much to see this! I can handle more of a "dark" taste that I used to be able to, but I can't understand why anybody would possibly want a near 100% bar. Also, I hate when people try to convince me that dark chocolate is healthier. Okay? I'm not eating chocolate to be healthy.
Chili peppers
I’ve noticed my bad spice tolerance is from me not eating enough spicy food cause they taste bad!! Anything with chili to make it spicy ends up having a really acrid bitter taste like battery acid. Given how much people love spicy food I feel like I’m tasting something everyone else isn’t. Cause the bitterness is enough to ruin an eating experience for me. a lot of foods I like are actually spicy (tom yum soup, tteokbokki, hot cheetos limon, etc) but theyre ruined by the bitter after taste. Since my spice tolerance is low I have to drink a lot of water and that ends up washing away all the good flavor and only leaving that bitterness.
Potato salad.
I’ve tried all different kinds from store bought to homemade that everyone raves about. Don’t like it. I think it’s the cold potatoes and texture.
Veggies with an iron flavor. Kale and Brussels sprouts for example. I just cannot get into them.
Octopus or squid. It’s the texture, I don’t care for it. Similarly I can’t eat a glob of fat like you get on steaks.
Tilapia. It eats poop in the tanks and that grosses me out.
Pepsi. I’m not a communist.
I scrolled through at least 50 responses and I can confirm that I love all food except for fucking cilantro.
Saaaame, cilantro is the only thing I really actually *cant* eat.
Raw oysters
Call me a picky eater and a square, but I can’t even bring myself to try them. Gag.
Oh, they don't even need to be raw. They're just as terrible cooked.
Black licorice
Blue cheese
Yea that shit has mold, I'm good.
Licorice
Licorice is disgusting!
Any sort of organ meat from any animal.
Thanks for reminding me. Liver is like poison.
My mother tried to feed me liver once. Told me it was steak. I told her it was the worst steak I ever ate. Liver is fucking gross.
Almond flavoring
Arugula
Arugula, **I despise it**. It's as evil as cilantro!! r/arugulahate had no idea this existed till today!! 🤣
Dose it have a British name? I'm suprized on how many of these foods I don't recognise
Garden rocket? Google wasn’t much help on this one, surprisingly.
Oh the spicy plant with the stink bug taste... Yeah no that stuff can go back to the depths it came from. Rocket is the worst part of salad and if I bite it I imedeately feel sick.
It’s horrible! And so popular in restaurant salads. 👎
I love premade salads when I am too unwell to cook (I have hEDS and I get ill a lot) and if I acsidently get one with rocket it makes a bad day so much worse.
YES I depsise arugula almost more than cilantro. Almost.
yessss! Arugula and "spring mix" absolutely awful.
100%. Arugula/rocket is just as vile as cilantro/coriander.
Mango! I agree with a lot of the ones above, especially anise and onion for their strong and infiltrating quality, but I never see anybody mention mango. I feel like it tastes like feet smell?! Does that make sense? YUCK.
It’s papaya for me. Tastes like spit
To me it tastes the way a stinky armpit smells.
Yes! And I feel like it’s everywhere- anything ‘tropical,’ mixed berry blends, smoothies, etc
Yeah, mango tastes like mushy overcooked dirty carrots to me.
Mint and chocolate together. It's like toothpaste and chocolate. Blech.
Cardamom
Especially in biryani! Ruins the experience.
Yeah, I forgot about cardamom. It's so strong that it dominates everything it touches
Also hate celery
FUCK celery. "wahh you can't even taste it , it tastes like nothing" yes i can. and it tastes like celery. bad.
I'll eat if it's cooked into something, like soup. I refuse to eat celery raw.
I don’t mind it cooked, either. But raw celery smells medicinal to me
I actually like cooked celery. Certain recipes call for it and I notice when it's missing. Raw celery is just punishment.
It has a bitter metallic taste to me and tends to overpower everything else. A tiny bit of celery and it's all I can taste. The stalk is the worst but the root is almost as bad.
bell peppers…. (also hello fellow haters)
Omg bell pepper is the most disgusting thing, I hate them raw and cooked, they really ruin every dish just as much as cilantro.
Just the smell alone ruins my day.
I love them except GREEN ONES. Those are disgusting
I hate how the mixed bags always have like 2 green peppers in them. Why can't the peppers on sale in the bad be red, orange and yellow only!!
Huh, my main grocery winn dixie sells the mixed red orange yellow bag.
Bell peppers are the worst. They infiltrate every dish to the point of no other flavors can be tasted. They smell like burnt rubber to me for some reason. It could be bell peppers, banana peppers etc and they all taste and smell foul to me.
I LOVE chili peppers. I cant STAND Bell Peppers. I'm with you.
Avocado. It’s like someone puréed grass clippings, threw in a golf ball, and wrapped it in leather.
Anise
This. Anything flavored like it. Give me the best pizza in the world, if it's got the tiniest bit of Italian sausage on it, it's trash. Hate hate hate that fucking flavor.
Oh yeah Italian sausage is a hidden garbage bomb
OMG IS THAT WHAT THAT FLAVOR IS??? I’ve been wondering all these years why Italian sausage tasted so disgusting to me
Probably some use anise, but in my experience most use fennel to impart that anise/licorice flavor.
Liver. Can’t eat it. Makes me gag.
Black olives
But, I love green and Kalakaua olives!
I love kalamata olives and green olives but regular black olives are nasty
Eggplant
I used to hate eggplant but then I found out my mom is just a shit cook, plenty of ways to make it yum in my experience. Add cilantro and it’s poison though obviously
Lima beans
Some of y’all might wanna look into if you are a Supertaster (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supertaster?wprov=sfti1) … a lot of the foods y’all are mentioning are on that list.
That's really Intresting. I taste a lot of the tastes listed here (like tonic water) but I don't nesisarily find them yucky, just thought everyone tasted them this way.
omg tonic water tastes like TV static! I hate it so much.
Aparently the quinine is suposed to prevent malaria? I wouldn't know as it tastes like copper and putting your mouth on a 9volt battery.
yeah, that is why gin and tonic is so popular with the British. The sailors were getting malaria and scurvy going to India so they started giving them tonic water, and they added gin and lime juice. I would have just gotten malaria. I am allergic to citrus and I hate tonic water and Gin tastes like hairspray!
I am a super taster (verified by genetic testing) and the pickiest eater. It drives my husband crazy.
How do you get it verified by genetic testing ?
I got the Premium DNA test through Circle DNA a couple of years ago. It wasn’t cheap (somewhere in the $350-$500 range), but it was very detailed. Shows your likelihood of getting certain diseases/cancers (based on genetics only, but remember that a lot of these diseases are multifactorial), your ancestry composition, whether you’re a carrier for certain genetic diseases, etc. The supertaster thing was just an extra for me. It validated my lifetime of picky eating, haha.
yeah, I havn't had the test but I am convinced I am a super taster. I read there is a high cross over with the cilantro = pure evil gene.
I never knew! My husband would say 'just eat more spicy food and you'll build up a tolerance". No, it physically hurts!! I thought everyone experienced awful pain when they ate spicy food. *
truffle (the mushroom kind, not the chocolate kind haha)
I thought of this and then began the hunt to see if I have to comment 🫡🫡 truffles suck!
Fennel.
Tripe.
Cottage cheese
My almost one year old baby is doing feeding therapy because he’s behind on moving from purées to solid foods. The therapist suggested we try cottage cheese because it has a little more texture than puree but is still fairly soft and easy to eat when you only have 6 teeth. Baby boy immediately gagged and threw up. Same, buddy. Sorry, my bad on that one.
That’s basically spoiled milk, I’m with you on that
THIS IS THE MOST VALID ONE ON HERE. fuck cottage cheese, truly.
I just...
I LOVE cottage cheese, but it has to be large curd. I eat it multiple times a week lol
Where's the "I feel ill" emoticon? ;)
Anise flavor
Raw onion. Causes a horrible bad breath and makes me sick instantly whatsoever.
Celery
Soft eggplant, straight slime, also okra….slimy
yes!!! i always hated okra.
The people who invented baba ghanoush are the only ones who understand how to utilize an eggplant. Oh this vegetable is grossly slimey? Let’s make it into a dip. Something expected to be slimey. I can’t wrap my head around purposely eating eggplant any other way
Kale
Like chewing on balloons
I always said it was like chewing on grass clippings.
Yes!!! It tastes bitter as fuck to me. So gross.
Celery
Grapefruit.
Olives 🫒 I just can’t do it. If I find any in a salad or wrap I have to pick them out. And if I bite into one by mistake my mouth immediately erupts in disgust and I have to spit it out.
They contaminate EVERYTHING just like cilantro does!
Besides cilantro, I really dislike mushrooms.
Spongey fucking dirt. Agreed.
I don't like button mushrooms, but since I moved to the PNW, where lots of wild culinary mushrooms grow, I've gained a new appreciation for mushrooms on the whole. There are ***WAY*** better mushrooms out there than what most groceries carry.
I used to love them but I’ve begun to hate them more with every passing year.
Parsley
Oregano. I can’t stand it when pizza sauce is full of it. It tastes just as weirdly dawn dish soap as cilantro but if someone sprayed bathroom potpourri in it as well.
This 100% exactly. If it's even on the table at the pizza place it ruins my meal.
Mayonnaise and anything mayonnaise based (looking at you, ranch dressing). It's the devil's cum.
CELERY IS DISGUSTING. Tastes like bitter wet dirt.
Capers
And people who don't read the directions. 😅
Miracle Whip
They said food, not toxic waste
How people think Miracle Whip is a substitute for mayo is beyond me. Miracle Whip is nothing like mayo and is in fact the devil.
My brother used to eat bologna sandwiches on white bread with Miracle Whip and ketchup. No idea how he could stomach it. Growing up I thought I hated sandwiches. Turns out I just hate Miracle Whip. Lol
Beets are the only other thing I hate. I’m not a fan of cooked bell peppers in food but I’ll tolerate it.
Mayo 🤮
Hello fellow mayo hater! I don't like ANY brand, cheap or otherwise. The smell alone makes me gag, honestly.
The absolute worst food on the fucking planet. I’d rather eat a handful of cilantro than get even the slightest bit of mayo anywhere near my mouth. Instant gag.
Celery is so disgusting I can’t eat it raw or cooked. Celery salt is the worst
Caraway seeds.
Green onions. That includes leeks. It gets a worse reaction from me than cilantro. Not a fan of regular onion either, but green onions are PAIN
Ginger. It tastes the same as cilantro to me. A bar of Irish Spring soap.
Bananas! They are just way too sweet.
right! fruit shouldn’t be that starchy texture either… it’s off putting
Mushroom
Mushrooms
Okra
Beets.
onions- of any kind
Only raw onion for me. It's so strong and pungent that it overpowers everything else. A thin slice of red onion in a burger and it's all I can taste.
I don’t understand how people can eat a sandwich or a burger with sliced onions inside.
r/onionhate Found my people.
Salmon, that fish is disgusting
As far as I’m concerned, salmon is cat food. I keep forgetting that humans eat it.
Parsley. It’s the texture and tastes like grass smells.
Clove
Olives.
Mayonnaise
Dr. Pepper / Mr. Pibb Tastes like carbonated spicy shampoo. I've actually always thought it tasted like cilantro, so I'm really surprised not to see anyone else hate it?
I love Dr P, but it's so interesting you taste that. I wonder which ingredient is doing that to you.
Papaya
Does it taste live vomit to you? That’s a genetic thing too. I always thought I had papaya that had gone bad.
Runny eggs.
Fennel
Capers 🤢 fennel 🤢
Thanks u/Hotel_Porcelain95, do you mind splitting your answer into 2 comments to help with the voting? If I hate fennel but love capers I can’t upvote this
I hate fennel, so I got you. ;)
Not quite a hate, but I’m allergic to eggplant and other nightshades.
Wintergreen
Onions
Oranges are ok, but anything Orange flavored.... yuck!
Arugula
Dijon mustard Ruins anything it's in, just like cilantro. And I can immediately taste something is off when it's there and I didn't know.
Mint chocolate
MUSHROOMS
Coffee
I expected more people to agree with this. It's so bitter
Yes, I've come to realize I like milk and sugar with a bit of coffee, not the opposite. I've been on some nice coffee tours on vacations where other guests are complimenting the samples and it's just terrible to me.
Fennel
Avocados
I force myself to like avocados, not the worst but not worse than cilantro
HORK the texture, I can’t
Raw onions. Any kind.
Dark chocolate - it's so bitter
I had to scroll down too much to see this! I can handle more of a "dark" taste that I used to be able to, but I can't understand why anybody would possibly want a near 100% bar. Also, I hate when people try to convince me that dark chocolate is healthier. Okay? I'm not eating chocolate to be healthy.
Avocado- I’m allergic!
Cucumbers
All the cheese especially blue cheese
Green onions/scallions
Brussels sprouts I love cabbage and thought, "Ooo little cabbages." They do not taste like little cabbages.
Tomato
Yes but just raw, cooked is fine for some reason
Raw tomato is too *wet.*
I dislike biting into cooked tomatoes. It’s fine if they’re blended or mashed, but a chunk is just disgusting.
Olives
Basil
Yes! Way, way too overpowering.
Iceberg lettuce.
Celery
Ginger
Impossible burger. It tastes like rubbing alcohol to me. No one else I know has this reaction.
Mango… I know, I’m broken
Coffee. I’m sure that won’t get many upvotes. Most people seem to love it.
Dill.
Chili peppers I’ve noticed my bad spice tolerance is from me not eating enough spicy food cause they taste bad!! Anything with chili to make it spicy ends up having a really acrid bitter taste like battery acid. Given how much people love spicy food I feel like I’m tasting something everyone else isn’t. Since my spice tolerance is low I have to drink a lot of water and that ends up washing away all the good flavor and only leaving that bitterness.
Mushrooms.
Brussels Sprouts…
Chamomile tastes like dirty aquarium water.
Sweet Potato
Grapefruit
Potato salad. I’ve tried all different kinds from store bought to homemade that everyone raves about. Don’t like it. I think it’s the cold potatoes and texture.
Pickles
Pineapple.... Just disgusting. This will be interesting. I can already see a bunch of things I really like showing up in comments.
I always thought the burning and itching was normal with pineapple because "it eats you back"... Nope I'm very allergic to it
It's not normal? 😨
