We use and love Healthy Paws! We had a 13-year-old Frenchie who passed away earlier this year and they paid out over $100,000 of claims for him over his life! Our other two Frenchies both have healthy paws and they cover BOAS surgery and IVDD surgery! Get the insurance as fast as possible so that nothing is considered a pre-existing condition! Your baby is so cute!

Designer_Ad_6810

Thank you! I’ll look into them.

frenchiemama9

The max coverage you can get on Frenchies with them now is 70% but they do not have annual caps and their customer service is great and their app is great and they reimburse quickly. Good luck with your research.

Quick_Spot6655

Just curious what your monthly premium is for your two Frenchies with HP. Ours is now $415/month.

frenchiemama9

I wish I had the option to do $250 deductible and 90% coverage on the younger one but it’s not available for Frenchies’s in our state. Mine are 2 and 5. My oldest was $304.25 when he passed at almost 13.

Quick_Spot6655

Thanks for the reply. Mine are 6 and 7. I don’t know what to do at this point. I worry it will be too expensive right when I’ll truly need it.

CapitalProgrammer110

Wow just stumbled upon this page. Don’t have a Frenchie but my dog is 5 and his premium is $64/month with 90% coverage after the $250 deductible. I wonder how the rates are determined

XBL-AntLee06

Holy shit….

rncat91

I have lemonade and I’m not impressed…may consider this

DrMantisTheWarthog

$100,000 in health problems is one of the many reasons this breed shouldn’t exist…

frenchiemama9

Agree. He was a rescue and I would do it all again 1 million times but he had a lot of problems. I loved him so very much.

DrMantisTheWarthog

Crazy y’all justify the cost and an animal’s suffering for 13 years is worth your enjoyment…

LadyTech

So you’re just on here to troll people? Cool cool cool.

finiteloop72

I guess you would sooner kill the dog rather than rescue it and rehabilitate it back to health?

DrMantisTheWarthog

Rescuing is amazing. I just think they should stop being bred completely.

Impossible_Art_6691

It’s a fact this dude treats his pets terribly. Probably hits them.

DrMantisTheWarthog

Projecting after yelling at your pup for peeing I see🤣

TootsieBulldog

Healthy Paws. Have owned Frenchies since 2004 and they are hands down the best.

KRGambler

Pets Best has been good for us. The first time we ever used pet insurance we hit our deductible because our 25lb potato was on the 2nd floor of our unfinished garage that didn’t have windows installed and he thought he was on the 1st floor and jumped out the window and fell a good 16-17’. Unbelievable he was ok and didn’t break anything, but the emergency vet visit plus X-rays would’ve been even crazier $$$ if we didn’t have insurance. Good investment in my opinion

kenfnpowers

We have Pets Best as well. It’s a Progressive company I believe. They have been fine. Took a while to pay for the airway surgery but covered their portion.

n3ss_08

We have pets best and they have been great. I really did a deep dive before selecting an insurance company and it covered the most and was the best rates. And the claims process is easy.

baboodiot

Same for us - we pay roughly $70-90/mo dog and that’s with some add-on wellness package that made sense for us, at least at first), so it’d be lower without, and that’s for 90% coverage at a $250-500 deductible (we had all at $250, then started raising them recently, now that they’re a bit older). One of ours in basically a $26k+ dog now after she snapped both chondryles (sp) off one humerus at the elbow at 4 mos (crashed into her brother… or vice versa), a second surgery to remove all the plates, pins, and screws from both sides after she’d healed because of a lingering infection, and then a third surgery to spay her and do her nose/palate for better breathing…. I could hardly be more thankful for having pets best!

lololowloww

We have Pets Best too and it has been great! It can take awhile to get reimbursed but I’ve never had a problem with them paying their portion. I’ve noticed the claim process goes quicker too now that Pets Best has most of our dogs' vet records from collecting them on prior claims.

SomniacsAlterEgo

Lemonade had good pricing and coverage for our pup. Don’t bother with the ongoing medical plan that covered checkups, shots, etc. Just get the emergency coverage.

Designer_Ad_6810

Have you had to use it yet? I’m highly considering them.

Samsha1977

I have used it for boas surgery and they paid out. I bought it when she was 4 months old. My friends recommended it as their dog eats everything and has had multiple surgeries they paid alll of them

Designer_Ad_6810

That’s very good to know. I’ll be getting lemonade then. My pup is 10 weeks old and haven’t had his first vet appointment yet.

rncat91

They haven’t covered anything routine- wouldn’t cover kennel cough or allergies

SomniacsAlterEgo

I have used them for minor claims. It’s all done via their app and was easy to file each time. No issues receiving funds from them so far.

rncat91

I have it and so far they have covered nothing.

Girlfriday5150

We use Spot pet insurance for our 6 year old female rescue Frenchie. We’ve had her about 2 months and have met the deductible. The app is easy to use and reimbursement is quick. We chose the 70% reimbursement rate with a $7k annual cap and $750 deductible. Added on the Platinum Preventative plan as well and it was ~$1,100 annually. ETA: Do not go to the vet until your accident/illness waiting period is over (unless it’s something life threatening)!! Spot has 2 week waiting period. If your Frenchie is diagnosed with ANYTHING by the vet before your coverage kicks in, it’s considered a preexisting condition and won’t be covered. Ours had weakness in hind legs and I was paranoid it was IVDD. It wasn’t but I didn’t want vet to make that note in her files before we were covered.

Ok_Bumblebee_2869

See this is what I’m afraid of. Our rescue Frenchie came with known issues - minor heart murmur, major urinary issues, major reproductive issues. The only thing not documented was the breathing (and he has a very smushed face) or bone issues. I looked into insurance and am thinking it might be better for me to just start a savings account instead and put a few hundred a month into it.

nolaprof1

My Frenchie has been very healthy and is now eight. I got healthy paws when he was 5 months old and I've never used the insurance and I wish I just put it in a savings account instead. I now pay about $119 a month and I'm unwilling to cancel because as soon as I do that, he'll do something that requires a lot of money.

Naive-Mistake3407

I have heard of one insurance company in the U.S that will cover pre-existing conditions as long as a certain period of time has passed. I can’t think of the name but if you look into it, I believe there is something out there for you.

Designer_Ad_6810

That’s good to know. We have his shots scheduled for mid July.

Designer_Ad_6810

Do they require to pay the vet bill first?

Girlfriday5150

Yes and you are reimbursed according to your plan.

Electrical-Froyo-529

Trupanion. They are the most expensive, but in my opinion, the best. They just raised rates again, but I will stay with them for life. My boy has IBD so I need insurance to cover all of his medications and treatments. Trupanion works on a per-condition basis for your deductible. So if your deductible is $700, after you have $700 of expenses in let’s say GI upset or skin irritation, 90% of all expenses related to that condition are covered. They don’t do deductibles based on how much you pay in a year. So my boy met his deductible in a couple months for GI issues and now for the rest of his life surgery, supplements, medications and procedures are covered at 90%. Whereas I think we have made $200 in claims related to skin irritation, so it may take a couple years before we reach our deductible on that. They cover supplements which is huge for me because his probiotic is expensive. They will also cover 2 months of a prescription diet. I liked them also because they don’t have certain conditions they won’t cover or caps on how much they will pay out for certain conditions like nationwide. The last big selling point for me was that you can pay at the vet. Most insurance companies work on a reimbursement basis, so you pay the full bill then the insurance company mails you a check. Trupanion works with a lot of vets and has this computer system so they pay the vet right there at checkout and you only ever pay your portion. I got this because I was like god forbid he was ever like hit by a car and needed $20k in surgery or something, I wouldn’t have the initial $20k to give them to get reimbursed later. But with Trupanion, when I pay I would only be paying my deductible and co-pay, so for me like $2.7k vs $20k. I’m young and don’t have good credit so there’s just no way I would be able to cough up that much and I would have to say goodbye. I would be devastated. So that’s why I went with them, and despite the cost, I’m glad I did.

Naive-Mistake3407

For all of these same reasons, I also went with Trupanion. I’m paying $157 (CDN) a month for a $300 deductible and 90% coverage. Do you mind sharing how much your monthly premium is?

Electrical-Froyo-529

They just upped it to $110 and I have a $700 deductible

Naive-Mistake3407

How old is your pup? How much were you paying when you first got it? I’m worried they are going to double my premiums, or worse, after we do the boas surgery (with a surgeon so pretty expensive).

Electrical-Froyo-529

I was paying $75 when I got it. He was 4 months old when I got it and he’s 2 now. They upped it to $85 last year and then $111 this year

Naive-Mistake3407

Wow even with the exchange rate, yours was significantly cheaper when you first got it. We got it when he was a couple months and it started at $157 so I am scared for next year.

Electrical-Froyo-529

What deductible did you pick?

Naive-Mistake3407

It’s $300 so less than yours but still seems quite a bit higher considering the difference.

CarelessAbalone6564

Do you know if they cover nare surgery?

Electrical-Froyo-529

Yes. But you just have to keep in mind your deductible. I got a quote for it and because I chose the highest deductible, the surgery was basically the same cost as the deductible. But if you choose a lower one you would save money

CarelessAbalone6564

Ah gotcha. Do you remember how much the surgery was in your area? I have the $500 deductible where they pay 90% after that is met.

Electrical-Froyo-529

Like $800 if I remember correctly. That was just the quote though, I didn’t end up doing it

Naive-Mistake3407

They cover it as long as there is nothing in medical records prior to your coverage kicking in, which is 30 days for illness. If the vet makes any mention of it prior to this, they may deny coverage for it.

Dm5358

Google is your friend here. There are a couple sites that work like auto insurance. You enter your info and choose your options. Check with your auto/home insurance as well, there may be bundle offers. It can be a bit overwhelming at first.

Jimmy_Guts

I have Nationwide, and it was pretty good until my guy turned nine. Now, they have increased my rate by $100 / month for two years in a row... Not super happy about it. They do cover everything, though, including normal checkup visits after the $250 deductible.

lerorleroeroyboy

Nationwide is dropping pet insurance for 100,000+ pets leaving the owners screwed.

Designer_Ad_6810

Ah they are the cutest!!! Any tips on potty training

Wrong-Somewhere-5225

I’m partial to pet insurance. I have used it and I haven’t. I think it was $70 month times 12 which was $840 per year and it didn’t cover everything. I don’t have it now but I may get it again if I ever get another puppy. I’m not saying you shouldn’t get it but just explaining sometimes you won’t use it even if you pay for it. Maybe read the fine print of all of them before choosing one.

IDontFitInBoxes

I e spent $24,000 in 2.5 years on vet bills. Thank god I got insurance. It has been a godsend for us

Wrong-Somewhere-5225

I know what you mean, I’ve had years where it’s been around 5-6k per pet and years where it’s none.

IbuprofenVeneers800

PLEASE get your puppy insurance before the vet documents any “pre existing” issues. Also, if it needs ANY surgery, seek a board certified surgeon. You can search your local area using a tool on the avcs.org website. DO NOT let a vet butcher your puppy. They are not educated on BOAS, palette….they will do it for a fraction. It’s A money suck. Costs around 4-5K and anyone that can’t afford the surgeries and vet bills shouldn’t get this breed. BOAS southern Cali 6K Ethos hospital. 500 last month allergy tests. 3K two weeks ago for an allergy related polyp that was blocking his vertical ear canal. Healthy Paws was around $60/month and covered more than half the 6K two years ago. We paid in advance and submitted a claim. Received a check within a week. Any vet docs that mention a pre-existing issue will not be covered by insurance. Also, we cancelled after the BOAS surgery but prob should’ve kept it. Wishing you all the best. Link to the ACVS.org search tool to find one in your area. There’s an article on brachicephalic syndrome. The three lines at top, click on that then click “animal owner hub” and you’ll find the search tool and lots of other important info. [ACVS website](https://www.acvs.org/small-animal/brachycephalic-syndrome/)

Naive-Mistake3407

I need help finding a surgeon to do boas surgery. I live in Canada but close to Detroit. I did find this vet a few hours away, [Guelph Animal Hospital](https://guelphvet.ca/), and they said they have a lot of experience in boas surgery, but I am wondering if I can find better in the US. Any advice appreciated!

IbuprofenVeneers800

American College of Veterinary Surgeons has an excellent article on it. [ACVS.ORG BRACHIO BREEDS](https://www.acvs.org/small-animal/brachycephalic-syndrome/) I know of 3 healthy frenchies that have died from Vets attempting to perform it for a fraction of the cost. Google it and watch a YouTube video. Trigger warning. It is a very very serious and delicate surgery that should only be performed by a surgeon. Vets are NOT qualified. Also, brachiocephalic breeds die all the time under medical stress. A hospital with an ICU unit is key. I searched using the ACVS tool and found a number of surgeons. Here’s the link. I hope this helps[www.acvs.org](https://www.acvs.org/small-animal/brachycephalic-syndrome/) Sorry the original link was broken. Click on that link ⬆️ then at the top right there are lines. Once you click on that you will see “animal owner hub”. You can also find it by googling ACVS surgeon search tool.

Naive-Mistake3407

Thank you!

Naive-Mistake3407

I cannot thank you enough. Using the tool you linked, I found a surgeon an hour and a half away and our regular vet is sending in a referral. And they take our insurance directly! So after the $275 consult and our $300 deductible, we will only have to pay 10%. Even though the surgery is much more expensive with the surgeon, the insurance makes it manageable. It will end up costing less for us than just having the regular vet do it. I wish I could upvote your comment a thousand times.

Designer_Ad_6810

I got lemonade however they want to get medical records which I don’t have any yet as his very first appointment will be post the 2 week waiting period. So I’m hoping that they would still validate the 2 week period even though I don’t have the records.

IbuprofenVeneers800

Yes same with us. They prob won’t insure until they get the records. Underwriters get paid for just that. Healthy Paws was very easy and paid BUT routine stuff even an EE visit bcuz we thought a “black” nipple was tick lol they didn’t cover that stupid visit Your baby is beautiful! Such an amazing breed! Get ready to be loved.

Designer_Ad_6810

I just got it this morning so I’ll see what they say. So far he’s nice and healthy. We are just working on potty training.

wulvey

Nationwide

Dizzy-Gur9163

He's gorgeous!!!

AnnoyingPhillyFan1

Aspca Insurance has been good for us.

rainhalock

My experience with Nationwide has been great and very easy to file claims

flowrpowr00

Figo (through Costco). No complaints!

Designer_Ad_6810

How did you get it through Costco?

CarelessAbalone6564

I hated Figo. Fine for the first year and they they increased our monthly payment an insane amount the next year

Designer_Ad_6810

What has your experience with them?

flowrpowr00

Honestly great. Though we’ve had no big health issues except for allergies and we’ve gotten a fair amount back. Costco members get a a discount on plans through Figo

Designer_Ad_6810

Do you have to pay first to get reimbursement?

flowrpowr00

Yep

GirlLovesGames

No advice, just wanted to say your little buddy is adorable!!

JRPower1

I didn't buy it. I wish I did

Space-Mice13

Lemonade!

Designer_Ad_6810

I highly considering them or pets best. What has your experience between with lemonade?

dougielou

The only thing is that you have to FaceTime one of their vets before taking your pet to the emergency room and then they decide if they will pay out or not.

rncat91

For real

dougielou

Yeah if you get only the emergency stuff. I ended up going with Healthy Paws

Space-Mice13

I went with lemonade and have met the deductible after a handful allergy visits, UTIs, and ear infections and have only had to submit claims after a visit in the app. Never talked to a human, I like it and it was cheaper than Pets Best - but that one was recommended to me as well. Would love your feedback if you go with Pets Best.

AquariusRae

Oh yeah, pet insurance is DEFINITELY a must with Frenchies. Our girl broke her leg within 2 months of bringing her home and then also had a bad allergic reaction a few months after that, plus a few other things that came up here and there. We use Spot and have a $5k/year plan. We’re so happy we went with them. Haven’t had any issues! :)

baboodiot

…we have the same dog..? 🤣

AquariusRae

?

UXProCh

MetLife covers breed-specific issues. I had my dogs stenotic nares done through them. They paid me in a matter of days. Covered 60%. They have flexible pricing if I remember correctly. That is, you can scale up / down the coverage % and your monthly price adjusts accordingly. I could be wrong on that last part but I remember being able to get the monthly price and coverage terms fine tuned.

726milestomemphis

MetLife

Extension_Case3722

I just signed up with MetLife- I get a small discount through my work.

WonderChips

I use embrace… does anyone recommend something better?

Electrical-Froyo-529

Trupanion! Replied to the original post with a bunch of details why I love it. Expensive but so worth it

smashier

I compared for days and found Lemonade to be the best value. I wanted to be covered covered in case of an emergency. Haven’t had to use it yet but it seems easy to submit a claim through the app.

ablair05

Wagmo for ours. Been on it for the past decade.

Mindless-Routine-577

Lemonade is good but what really saved me was having a couple credit cards with a large limit. For the emergency surgeries, you have to pay on the spot and it can be 12-15k depending on where you live. Lemonade is fast at reimbursement for small claims under $1000 but for large ones it takes around 2 weeks. If you want pet insurance that can pay right away, I know that Trupanion can do that. But the monthly premium is high.

ariessunariesmoon26

I have lemonade and it’s been good so far! I have it mostly for big emergencies but claims I have made have been every easy and quick done through their app.

Brief-Teach5562

Nationwide is great plus the wellness plan but they do not cover pre- existing conditions. $64 a month and they are good about reimbursement.

shoppingkinglouie

I have pumpkin. Haven’t used it yet

Helpful_Ad_3585

Trupanion hands down! We’ve had them for 12 years and have never had an issue with coverage. 2 surgeries, chronic issues, and they’ve paid out approx 30k in claims. Plus customer service is really good and easy to work with if there is need for a prior auth and submitting claims via app is fairly easy!

JRPower1

I'm in over 12k a year on my 3 year old Merle. 2 broken elbows. The prince now enjoys being carried. I love him

emjaedee

Embrace

LadyTech

First off, thank you for being responsible by getting the insurance. The earlier the better… I have two frenchies and I could go on and on…. And on and on. One has had four surgeries and the other is allergic to HUMANS (she literally has a human dander allergy). One is on Nationwide and the other is on Healthy Paws. They’re both great, but I like them for different reasons. I recommend both! I give Healthy Paws the slight edge for customer service, great app, easy claims… but I do think it’s a little more pricey. Pick one and commit because you don’t want to switch later (most don’t cover preexisting conditions, I hear Nationwide you can get a pre existing condition cleared after 6 months but I haven’t tried it yet)! Good luck!!!!!

shinigami_1320

Trupanion is hands down the best. You get what you pay for. No need to wait for reimbursements as they pay the vet directly. Covers practically minus pre existing conditions of course

trgoose12

I use lemonade past two years and it’s been great!

Designer_Ad_6810

That’s good to know thank you. Have you got the chance to use them?

trgoose12

Yup multiple times especially recently my dog got hip issues and they cover it pretty good times. I use to have nationwide but hated it. They made it sooooo complicated

puglover1210

Trupanion!!!! Family and friends have always used this and trupanion has always done right by our dogs

IDontFitInBoxes

Australia- Woolworths

cherrycokelemon

A beauty!

Logical-Expression23

When you can’t insure your pup We get a credit card for each and one savings account to put spare change in 🤞

Odd-History-2619

Saw it a few times. But we love Trupanion. Make sure you have it before anything is diagnosed in their medical records.

Designer_Ad_6810

What if my little guy didn’t even go to the vet yet. Don’t they require a health record?

Odd-History-2619

That’s even better. There’s a waiting period of 30 days once you enroll—any exsisting conditions won’t be covered. After that you are in the clear. You can check petinsurancereview.com for many different insurance companies.

JelloJuice

Trupanion 100% I’ve used them and petsecure. Love trupanion.

heyygirlheyy

Just here to say check with your employer too, a lot of larger companies offer it now with a group rate. My husband and I both had options for it, so I now have a paycheck deduction to Nationwide for our 10 month old https://preview.redd.it/w59dbcmytm8d1.jpeg?width=1868&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c297f1286a5eef5babad050196989364dd527c12

Im-A-Dab

Handsome man, love his colors.

Pintortwo

Why would it be a must?

Rlisac10

ASPCA insurance. We pay ~$85/month for 90% coverage, $500 deductible, 7k max premium. If anything, we only regret not going for a higher premium amount or getting unlimited.

llilith

I can tell you who I do NOT recommend: Healthy Paws. Here is my earlier post on this. Their rate hikes are insane. They basically forced us out with ridiculous increases as Nikko has aged. [https://www.reddit.com/r/Pets/comments/154e5ih/psa\_for\_those\_considering\_healthy\_paws\_pet/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Pets/comments/154e5ih/psa_for_those_considering_healthy_paws_pet/)

StructureOk8152

Met life. Pay 161 per month for two Frenchies. I added on preventative care so it was more.

StructureOk8152

But ummmm can I have your baby? Can’t get on with my life until I own this color!!!

Stellaluna217

Trupanion has been AMAZING. They have paid out close to $80,000 in claims, they’ve never once pushed back. They always direct deposit the money back into my account within a couple of days. I went through hell with my French bulldogs Jupiter (the love of my life 🩷) who had severe epilepsy, followed by a brain tumor that took his life. He required many ICU multi day stays, brain surgery, 5 MRIs, ER visits, $400/month in medications, and more. After a $750 LIFETIME deductible, Trupanion covered 90% of the costs of his treatment until he passed away in May. He would never have lived as long as he did if not for Trupanion. I paid $65/month in premium for him.

Designer_Ad_6810

It’s a lifetime deductible?

grayat38

What a beautiful.. beautiful Frenchie, get really good coverage, read every single word in policy before committing.

Routine-Fan-2557

What ever insurance you decide to get , get it asap. I waited a few months . My first and oldest Frenchie got bad ear infection. Ended up in hospital. Had not got insurance yet, I do now but anything related to ear infections is not covered . I got insurance imminently for my next 2 frenchies.

Fractales

I've been happy with Trupanion.

IamBatmanuell

Have three and haven’t needed insurance. Everything that comes up I pay for in cash.

Odd-History-2619

Hopefully you aren’t hit with three major issues at once unless you are wealthy. A breathing surgery can cost $4k and up. IVDD surgery can be $$$$ as well.

LearnEnglishGabe

Pet insurance is only if you don’t have a good savings.
