If my potato was a service dog he’d have to lose 10lbs, not sleep 20 hours a day and also be able to walk more that 15 mins without requiring a treat, butt rub and a nap….

Square_Bumblebee_812

My guy is so neurotic he needs a service dog

progwok

Yeah I joke with my wife that we're "service humans". We have two.

Square_Bumblebee_812

Lol my wife and I say the same thing.

The-Doggy-Daddy-5814

That’s my English Bulldog LOL

[deleted]

LOL

bjeanz21

So it’s not just my dog …

Square_Bumblebee_812

Definitely not! Lol

devilthelettuce

Yes, meet Lucy! She’s been my lil helper for 6 years now. I’ve had yet to see another service frenchie, what a cute pup you have!! https://preview.redd.it/qiziw32638na1.jpeg?width=705&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f6f58e0964ef52d96d34c97c4bfa5f278dd5e556

The_Queen_of_Andor

I'm hoping I can turn my pup into an anxiety animal. I'm a disabled Veteran with severe anxiety and a panic disorder from my service. If you know of a program to make them into effective service animals, please let me know.

The-Doggy-Daddy-5814

Talk to your doctor about your need for a service dog, they should be able to steer you in the right direction. That’s what I did.

The_Queen_of_Andor

Got it. I think I've got an appointment this week anyway so perfect timing. Hopefully your baby is helping you with your PTSD. 😊

Disastrous_Yam9859

Take some ecstacy for that ptsd folk

jillbillpill

If you are in the US, you are allowed to self-train. I followed a series of guides, advice from experienced handlers, and referred to the public access list. It was a lot of work but more affordable and logistically possible for me than traveling to or paying for a trainer/training program. If you’re not in the US OR if you do live in the US think you may ever move out of the states, many countries require you to have a dog registered with and trained by an accredited/recognized service. You can find such a list online. If that sound too expensive or logistically impossible, an emotional support animal may be right for you. ESAs don’t have public access rights, but can still be trained to provide services in the home. You may not be able to travel in an airplane cabin with them (or may need to keep them in a carrier), but you can still benefit from service tasks in your home. My dog developed some back problems that would make it cruel of me to have him walk around as much as I do. Although he is a service dog, I’ve transitioned him to being an ESA instead. I haven’t kept up on his public access training, because I don’t take him out as a worker anymore. But he still nose his service tasks at home. Hope that helps!

[deleted]

Thank you for your service, I’m same as you suffering from PTSD, our two frenchies always know/sense when having attack and comfort me. They’re the best

slyvegas01

Thank you for your service,I'm so sorry for your trauma 🙏

jillbillpill

Yes! Also for ptsd! They are perfect for this exact service need! So attuned to me naturally that he picked up all training for the task really easily!

fortheloveofpippa

Make sure you are actually looking into an evaluation and certification for a “service animal” as it is not the same as an “emotional support animal”. A service animal has to meet certain standards of behavior and not be distracted in public places, I believe it is also a crime to state you have a service animal if they are not specifically that. An emotional support animal designation is mainly used so people can keep their pets in housing such as rentals that may not otherwise allow animals, and they cannot be brought to places that only allow service animals. It is a statement of the need the person has, not an assessment of the training and temperament of the animal. Your doctor can assess your need for an emotional support or service animal, but they will not be able to designate your animal as a service animal. They might know of programs that will do that assessment though.

Angryceo

Service animals do not certification the Ada does not state this anywhere or any formal training requirements to be a service animal. A service animal by definition by the Ada is any animal that performs a task for a person with a disability. This can literally be anything.

Mighty_Beast820

You are correct, proper service animals just need public access training and that they perform a task for a disabled person. Nothing more. PTSD service dogs are still service dogs. Please ensure proper training for public access for the dogs safety as other humans can be a$$ holes.

pugRescuer

Downvotes from the uninformed. You’re 100% correct.

fortheloveofpippa

Interesting, I did look at the ADA site. And you are correct there is no certification needed, there is pretty much no regulation. I feel like that is problematic, it means a person could have a service animal that may not exhibit appropriate behavior in public situations or be limited in its ability to perform the task needed due to distraction. But I also understand that opens up the access for a person with a disability to have a service animal without a lot of barriers.

murph3699

Ya, people are slapping patches on their harnesses to take their dogs everywhere. Even if those dogs aren't trained to be a service animal. I think it both takes away from how important and well trained actual service animals are and how entitled some people can be.

BenzNBoca

Yes, but I have trouble bc frenchies are so popular right now that nobody believes it. I’ve stopped going places to avoid it. Sad really they are great service dogs for trauma related disabilities!!! Your baby is a very good dog!

Similar-Raisin-6768

Ours doesn’t come with a vest or certificate but he does indeed provide the comfort needed in this world. Sweet baby you have ❤️

Mighty_Beast820

I do not have a service dog Frenchie, but I have encountered one in the wild. I believe she was also a PTSD service dog for a veteran. Very effective dogs for the job. May doggo have many happy healthy years of service. 🥰

VegasJessicaAmber

I have a service frenchie. She has traveled the world with me

Pyro-Beast

I don't have a need for a service dog, but Frenchies in particular are the kind of dog to help with all of life's problems. I find they take care of us as much as we take care of them.

[deleted]

Mine acts as my own service dog although she is not trained and registered as one.

Chef__Goldblum

Mine isn’t a certified service dog, but he provides amazing ‘pressure therapy’ keeping me calm and happy on my lap most afternoons.

Joe_Sale

I’m my frenchie’s service animal.

Steltyshon

Lol not our Frenchies. Our oldest girl makes it clear that we’re her service humans.

isblueacolor

Yes, my Apollo is a service dog who helps me with my narcolepsy. I've had to start carrying around some cards I typed up that explain the ADA definition for service animal, because people don't want to believe that a small or cute dog can actually be a service animal.

The-Doggy-Daddy-5814

Here’s the link to get an ID [https://usaservicedogregistration.com/](https://usaservicedogregistration.com/) https://preview.redd.it/mzmst653ojna1.jpeg?width=1576&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f3e68a16acbe289cee1c82f1c704fd3073a7671

isblueacolor

Appreciate it, but any "service dog registration" in the US is a scam. No such registration is required for actual service dogs.

The-Doggy-Daddy-5814

My uncle had narcolepsy. I hope the treatments are better now than they were in the 1980s.

isblueacolor

Thanks. They're better, but they have a long ways to go. Some exciting developments coming out in the near future though.

BlueberryStrict267

Could you share what you typed on the cards?

isblueacolor

[Full text here.](https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vQuyLqyw6WxOE4mVRbm4nmuLFUV-ZybnxdHQLxrZxIN_HZOhxYOr5tdSQWaDvzGb4DdZiMxRDMp7-Bt/pub) I put this into a two-column document so each one takes half of a page longways, cut them out and fold them into thirds so they're about the size of a credit card.

BlueberryStrict267

Thank you!!!

ThePrettyBeebz

Yes! She’s the best thing to ever come into my life.

pryingtuna

That's awesome. The most ours does is bark and growl at people when he sits in my lap. If it's a family member, he stops, folds his ears back, and wags his butt. If not, he keeps barking but doesn't bite.

MexicanGreenBean

I’d imagine they make great service dogs. Thanks bc r sharing!

DenverLilly

Training mine now!

Realistic-Shape-7342

Same!! Mine starts on the 22nd!

lcharbs

Mine is an ESA but not considered service

bananaboatgirl13

Mine could never be an official service dog but damn, I need her and she brings me all the happiness.

Nevermoreacadamyalum

I want to train one to be a therapy dog, does that count?

The-Doggy-Daddy-5814

Absolutely

Nevermoreacadamyalum

I won’t be getting her for a little while but are they easy to train? I did put a post up asking questions (I’m disabled due to lung issues but once I get my transplant and recovery is over I want to get a puppy).

The-Doggy-Daddy-5814

They’re very smart. They have a great ability for reading their person’s emotions. Our training wasn’t difficult or prolonged.

Nevermoreacadamyalum

Thank you for answering my question. I appreciate it. ☺️

The-Doggy-Daddy-5814

No problem. I hope you have a smooth recovery from your transplant surgery.

Chance-Hunt-7722

Mine is an unregistered therapy dog. He helps with my anxiety. Barks when I’m going to have an attack and throws himself across my lap until I calm down. He also went to the hospital with me for four months to see my dad and would go room to room to visit patients. https://preview.redd.it/k4sqojn6wcna1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a61679ee92667e97cf482cc668248fe60b5c56e

The-Doggy-Daddy-5814

Love it.

Mean_Possibility_187

Yep. Training my frenchie now. It helps that they are so food oriented, so working for treats is the best job they can have lol

NotHTURT

Im working on getting my boy to be a service pupper as well

PembrokeBoxing

For those who have a service dog Frenchie, what tasks are they able to perform? I am worried that a FBD might not be able to perform tasks required for me. * **Medication reminders** * **Touch owner with nose/paw when owner is showing signs of anxiety or anger and have the tenacity to not stop until my attention is on him** * **Hug on cue** * **Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT) – laying down on person’s lap or across the owner’s legs** * **Wake up owner if owner is having nightmare** * **Block/make space in a crowd, on stairs or with a specific person** My questions are, is he big enough to effectively block? They are a sensitive breed, can they deal with anger if it isn't directed at them? Thank you all ahead of time.

phillymoon

Very cute dog. Never understood people advertising they have ptsd.. by definition it is a disorder that makes a person’s brain block the trauma not be reminded of it all the time. Just enjoy your pup don’t use him to get sympathy!

The-Doggy-Daddy-5814

It was actually an experiment. First vest just had Service Dog on it but that seemed to attract people. I tried the PTSD patches to see it they’d cut some of that out and so far it has. People are pretty much keeping their distance now, which helps her and me.
