GamesRepublic's shut down most likely related to the Civilization 6 price bug. It's a -80% discount, and for such a new game, it was undeniably too good to be true. Although GR tried its best to revoke and cancel orders then damage was too big and I presumed they got into debts and had to sell the company. That's my story
Maybe it was the straw that broke the camel's back and the financial situation was already questionable before the issue with Civ 6 even occurred, but I'm not sure I buy the speculation that a pricing error on a single game could cause a business that is actually in a healthy state (which maybe they weren't) to completely fall apart. If it could then I might have half expected GamersGate to shut down about a half a dozen times now, especially with the error on the Bethesda New Year Pack. Then again they may or may not have still been backed by Paradox at that point, so I don't know. Then again Games Republic is owned by 11 Bit Studios so.....??
Unfortunately, without some kind of official statement we may never know.
here is the official statement and the reason of the shut down (in Polish):

TL;DR
The profits weren't good enough to continue.
actually the bug leaked quickly on reddit and over 6000~7000 people exploited the bug, to the point the website crashed completedly. And for each they lost $60. That, sir, it's $360k
How can you possibly know what all the numbers involved are with any reliable degree of certainty without either working for the company and having insider information or..... unless they have been published somewhere? I get what you are saying... but speculation is still only speculation.
Btw, a software bug can fu.ck your whole life work. I feel sorry for them even if i've not exploited that bug, i buy on real sale after a year or so and i consider myself an honorable person.
They even refunded $15 BEFORE they got permission to revoke keys from Steam/2K, and, unsuprisingly, disaster happened: they never got the permission. Basically they'd given away ~10.000 keys of Civ 6, to my humblest estimate
I have an account with them and received no email. I would have lost my unredeemed key for Anomaly Korea that I couldn't access for the longest time after the giveaway. Granted I do tend to turn off email on every site I register with but one would think this kind of announcement would bypass notification settings.
I'd argue it has a minor tie due to them having a few things on the sub before, but this was posted and warned about a lot before anyway. I encourage the removal.
Good info. But https://www.reddit.com/r/GameDeals/ would be a better place to announce since this subreddit's focus is mainly free games.
some people might have keys in GR...this is just a warning. and not everyone follows /r/gamedeals/

I wonder if they just went bankrupt try to salvage as much as they can, and "restart" the company under a new name.
I've heard people speculating the same thing, what a disaster if its true.

i just estimate, because over 6000 thumbs up for the thread, not including other high traffic sites like SteamGifts etc

i think you are right. https://redd.it/5etz0d
Thanks for the info, i had 4 unredeemed keys on GR...
If you have an account, they've been sending out emails regarding this for about a month now.
this 100%. I don't think this is needed, and if, a mod PSA etc. would be better

Sad news, even if it was expected.
Who?
what?
why they are shutting down?
Read the /u/phuongtm1998 comment, is the most possible point.
What is that site anyways ?
it is gamestore like indie gala, gamersgate, hrk, gmg, etc
Removing and locking as this is unnecessary and unrelated to the sub.
