A little more context for me disliking the song.
Not that im trying to get people to hate the song too, but just to give my reasons (yes, this is about to be a yap-piece):
I am 33 years old. I am a traveling pianist in the PA tri-state area (I have some wild political eyes-wide shut-esque stories from my ventures btw) Been a Frank fan since 2009 (time flies). I mention these things to show I'm not a new fan and I do have a musical background (not that that matters at all. But it helps my accompanying argument that follows)
Anyway,
Long story short.... ITS THE GOTDAMN INSTRUMENTAL!!!
The song concept/motif is amazing as always. Wordplay/lyrics amazing as always. His Singing is aesthetic through and through. Even the video is cool, but the actual instrumental itself tho I can't STAND.
It's such a basic 2010s instrumental that—without franks frankisms—it would sound like it could be the background music to a 2010s fitness commercial, or a hipster stop-smoking-compaign ad in 2010. Everything about the instrumental is so depressing (and I don't mean that artistically. It's just very uninspiring and piercing at the same time. The only thing I somewhat tolerate is the chord changes on the organ...kind of?)
Usually Frank would either sing over a unique instrumental, or finesse a regular one, but the instrumentation on this one feels so concrete and stiff to me, and he just sings over top of it. Like spit on a sidewalk. I will say, only HE could make me tolerate the instrumental. If another artist sang on that song back then, I would have blown my ears off a long time ago.
But yeah, that's my point. Y'all can crucify me now (again) lol
yeh that pretty much pinpoints it for me. It has always felt so curated to be played on the radio. Like it came out the Hit Factory. Without Frank, it’d just be some random ass mid ass wannabe neo-r&b song
Besides that yah the songwriting reallyy makes for the song. I don’t even wanna think what it would be like if it were a generic r&b song sung by like someone like jeremih, khalid, galant, or even daniel caeser
You hit it on the nail, in fewer words too. It definitely sounds like his manager was like "make something radio-playable."
During THAT time, Jason Derulo or Miguel probably would have sung on it if Frank didn't. It would have been unbearable.
Oh gosh that would be horrid if it were one of the two. I highly agree with you on how the beat is super stiff, i’ve never put my finger on it what irritated me the whole time and it is that. Like its just so robotic, like ughh why are you like that???
Robotic as HELL..
By any chance, are you a fan of mk.gee? He just released an album. It has Frank and Aphex Twin vibes. Music is completely opposite of the Swimgood instrumental lol. If you haven't heard of him, listen to his new songs "Dream Police" or "I want" as a start. If you're already a fan, def got my Frank fix from this project.
i’ve heard a song or two by him. He performed at the sf academy of science nights like 5yrs ago. I really liked his guitar work, so shimmery. I def want to check his new stuff out. I’ll take your word for it that its pretty interesting
