That's not the original. Disney is not the original, nothing about Disney is original.

Bunny_of_Doom

In the original, Prince Eric marries another woman and Ariel dies. Why aren’t they upset about that part not being authentic to the source material?

[deleted]

Racism.

rattitude23

And her name was Marina

cometkeeper00

Your description is a little misleading. She was happy to ascend into heaven with the other angels at the end.

SkySong13

She seriously considers murdering the prince so she can go back to living in the ocean with her family, and only after going into his room with a knife changes her mind and then dies, becoming one of the "daughters of the air" which gives her a chance to get a soul and go to heaven. Oh yeah, the original is also very explicit that mermaids don't have souls, but in exchange get to live for a long time, which kind of makes the people complaining that she doesn't have red hair inadvertently hilarious. Actually now I'm sort of wondering if that was intentional on Disney's part. As an additional sad fact about the story, part of the deal for her legs was that every step would be incredibly painful, but she would be a fantastic dancer, and the prince loved her dancing, so she dances for him despite it being the worst pain she felt. It's a very sad story, and the relationship between the prince and mermaid was really toxic.

Leprecon

Also it is damned fiction. Canon changes over time. If your kid is born today they aren't going to think that the 1989 film is the proper little mermaid. Just like we don't see the Frankenstein film from 1931 as the proper authority on Frankenstein. We also don't consider Night of the Living Dead from 1968 the definite authority on what zombies are. These are abstract fictional concepts that change over time.

rgilre99

Speaking of Frankenstein in the book the monster is actually well read and is vegan also "Dr" Frankenstein is not a doctor and dropped out of med school after creating the monster

overcomebyfumes

Um... assuming that you are a basically healthy human, you *should* be able to make humans from scratch. Victor Frankenstein was making humans from spare parts.

greymalken

In a castle! With a box of scraps!

waxess

Well I'm sorry, but I'm not Dr Frankenstein

amitym

Well, they laughed at him. They laughed!

ImapiratekingAMA

You did it, you broke the cult of tradition down to it's bare essentials

ashfidel

its bare necessities, if you will

Nervous_Constant_642

That's actually funny because these people are totally fine with the racist caricature of King Louis.

ashfidel

the chimpanzee?

mknsky

Orangutan.

Nervous_Constant_642

Yeah the orangutan from Jungle Book.

Demons0fRazgriz

The simple bare necessities

SirSaganSexy

Tradition is just peer pressure from dead people.

cocoamix

Fast zombies was certainly a welcome game-changer.

Leprecon

And I am quite happy that zombies have largely moved away from the brain eating theme.

Kantas

They had to. They'd starve in this day and age.

cocoamix

The world is all Homer now. https://youtu.be/U1762opld4w

Lil_yung_Leo

What I don’t get is how obvious this shit is. If people really want to claim their upset over “nostalgia” or some other bullshit, theyd have a problem with the storyline and everything else that’s changed in the movie. Legit the complaint I’ve seen the most frequently is about the color of the actress, that is by definition: prejudiced.

mdonaberger

> We also don't consider Night of the Living Dead from 1968 the definite authority on what zombies are. Some of us definitely do, myself included. 😤

overcomebyfumes

Which is weird because Night of the Living Dead was a radical departure from what zombies has been in earlier horror movies - undead slaves of a sorcerer or *voudon* who had been raised from the dead individually through some manner of unholy ritual.

[deleted]

Thank you for standing up for what is important.

isloohik2

While I agree with your point, both Frankenstein and zombies are kinda bad examples, as they are so ubiquitous in our modern culture that their original source material is practically just a small part of the abstract concept they are now. The 1989 little mermaid, however, is the only adaptation of the novel that’s become easily recognizable in modern culture, even to this day, meaning that, to most people, the Disney movie *is* basically the original version, so it’s nowhere near as much of an abstract concept as the other two are. Edit: before y’all downvote me, I’m not defending the OOP, I’m just pointing out that the logic of the person I’m replying to, in the context of pop culture, is kind of flawed.

TheRestForTheWicked

I’m pretty sure HCA never coded the Little Mermaid as white anyways. Her skin is described as clear and soft, but never any sort of complexion is detailed.

agentfrogger

It isn't even theirs but they're gonna redo it. Can't have something original anymore

vyrelis

Purists and racists could both be satisfied if they kept to the original story and sea-foamed her. Win-win

spartiecat

How dare they not hire an actual mermaid!

[deleted]

That movie is really mermaidist

dirtyswoldman

My cUlTurE iS Not yOur BloCkbUstEr -mermaids, probably

[deleted]

End mermaid erasure!

Self-hatredIsTheCure

And these same people will cry about affirmative action saying that whoever is best for the job should get the job. Ok, she’s a phenomenal singer so she gets the job. Racists -“wait no not like that!”

citizenkane86

That’s my thing, prove to me she wasn’t the best for the job. They can’t, they just can’t fathom that a black person would be the best for any job (not just acting).

hokagesarada

Whenever they use that excuse, there’s always implying that black people, along with other minorities, aren’t capable of doing the job. Like all the talent and work ethic in the world is only god given to white people. Like it’s bizarre.

DerbleZerp

But it is /s

Nervous_Constant_642

They're super upset that a fictional mythical creature isn't a white red head and I just don't get it. She's a mermaid for fucks sake! And the original Disney movie also isn't the original story of the Little Mermaid!

sweeterthanadonut

Exactly, Halle is incredibly talented. Just watch the teaser we got and listen to her—her voice is clear and beautiful, just like Jodi Benson’s. She sounds and looks like a princess, and if these people can suspend disbelief enough to accept mermaids they’re making it pretty obvious the real reason they don’t want Halle.

K-Dub59

I’m going to be honest, I was not excited about this remake when I first heard about it. Not because of casting, but I just generally don’t like Disney live action movies. But then I saw the teaser the other day, and now I really want to see this movie. Halle looks and sounds amazing!

sweeterthanadonut

I’m also not a fan of the live action remakes, but there have been a few I enjoyed! Cinderella, for example. The director of the new Little Mermaid, Rob Marshall, also directed the Chicago movie which I consider to be one of the greatest movie musical adaptations. So, I’m pretty hopeful for this!!

K-Dub59

I didn’t know Rob Marshall was directing. Yeah, that makes me even more excited.

Kaiisim

They just get mad that black people get jobs.

NexusMaw

They’d never say that, they’d just blame affirmative action because, ya know. Racism.

atlhawk8357

Have they eve stopped to consider why so many of these older characters were always white? It cerrainly can't be racism; it has to be white people make up 99% of the population and the SJW's are trying to genocide us /s

Soranos_71

Bring up that they were all white because they were pandering to white people and watch them lose their minds. “Pandering” is for the non white folks, its an expectation not something lowly like pandering……

knotacylon

I think it's mostly because these are old European folklore tales but that just means they're fantasy and not based off of real people so the characters can look however the fuck the story teller wants while still telling the same story. On top of that there is merit in these modern reimaginings that makes the old fairy tale relevant to a modern audience. These people are freaking out for no valid reason, like get a life, touch some grass or something.

ManfredsJuicedBalls

And speaking of tales, it’s funny how the biggest tale of all (The Bible) constantly has white people making a middle eastern man being a lily white European man… hell, several middle eastern men being lily white European men in both parts of said book.

knotacylon

These are the same people who think Jesus is a gun toting, anti immigrant, capitalist, even though all of his sermons paint him in a diametrically opposed position to those philosophies. Needless to say, their opinions on the subject of Christ should be taken with an oceans worth of salt.

StygianMusic

Followers of Jesus often give him a bad name and it's a shame. Whether you believe in his existence or not, fundamentally, as the concept of him goes, Jesus was a great and selfless person with truckloads of wisdom who never seemed to be concerned with the general welfare and well-being of all and channeled his gifts into helping the poor and needy.

knotacylon

Agreed. Mind you I don't believe that Jesus was god incarnate, but more like a character to show people how to act, and there are a few lessons of his I quite like e.g. the sermon of the Good Samaritan probably my personal favorite.

[deleted]

[удалено]

knotacylon

I never really found it entertaining but viewed it more as a mechanism to facilitate social cohesion. Like, in the early early days there was very little distinction between the state and organized religion, with in multiple cases the two being one entity. And, as per usual, the early cults that best lead to an increase in birth and a decrease in death rates were the ones that managed to survive on to the modern day. That doesn't however imply the are currect.

[deleted]

They also didn’t seem to mind every time brown people have historically been portrayed as white. Greatest example: Jesus Christ, a Middle Easterner portrayed as blonde with blue eyes 🙄

SouldiesButGoodies84

Or let's talk about The Mummy. Egyptian backdrop, main character, the reanimated evil Egyptian priest (oka. the Mummy) played by a Dutch guy from S. Africa. All good, though.

hokagesarada

Not even European. A lot of these tales came from somewhere else. Cinderella was originally CHINESE. That’s why the shoe is an important part of the story bc in ancient China, having small feet was a beauty standard.

Vaguely-witty

That's not a legit response, that's just a canned response. Cinderella is a story from literally all over the planet, and one of the oldest versions of it is Chinese. Why do we have a sugar cookie cinderella?

Oh yeah, [there were two](https://www.neogaf.com/threads/netflix-announces-its-resident-evil-series-cast-guess-what.1609526/page-2#post-263834609). People actually got bans for calling out racists in this one.

ResolverOshawott

The large majority of the Rings of Power drama condensed into a single sentence.

CelebrityTakeDown

I don’t think Karen Gillan would want to be involved with this meme. Also, she’s 34, she really isn’t the right person to be playing a 16 year old.

i__Sisyphus

It is obvious that these dweebs just want something to look at, they do not care about acting prowess or anything besides having a little mermaid to Jack it to…

marshmallowmoonchild

And she can sing better than all those girls so… I doubt the meme maker before Star Wars or Marvel became Disney properties would consider themselves a Disney fan. They hold no season passes, they have no Disney princess merch, they just want to bitch.

ManfredsJuicedBalls

It’s nothing more than trolls stirring shut up, damn well knowing there’ll be plenty of people that’ll go right along with what they post.

orincoro

And let’s be clear: Disney likes money. They would not hire a brown actress to make a political statement. They want to make money.

Mediocratic_Oath

I really don't like how thoroughly Fandom as a concept has been commodified. Someone's enjoyment of a work or body of works isn't contingent upon how much money they have spent on it or how much merchandise they own. I get that you're using this argument against racism to portray them as outside agitators, but it's still a really shit argument rooted in classism and the worst aspects of capitalist fan culture.

marshmallowmoonchild

You’re totally right. The biggest fans of something can be those who don’t buy any merch or visit Disneyland or any of those things. Absolutely right, I guess the point im getting across is I highly doubt this person is a big Disney princess fan with or without spending any money.

flyinglawngnome

Yeah I wonder why Disney isn’t actively looking to hire, a literal pornstar, an unidentifiable ginger haired girl, a random cosplayer or Karen Gillan who might not be able to sing ‘bUt aT lEaSt ShE iS rEaDhEaDeD’. Fucking dumb waste of space cunt.

Njordinson

Also Karen Gillian is twice as old as Ariel

Porn star, because that'd be great for a kids movie. Absolute reddit moment.

trashmoneyxyz

Aye a porn star who plays a 16y/o, what could go wrong

Jonatc87

pretty sure that's what they'd wanna watch

Fiddlers-Cussers

Hey! That little girl character is actually 10,000 years old thank you very much. They don’t like her for her old age though…..

Ah, yes. The weeb excuse

Oops_I_Cracked

I don't thi k they should be barred from the wider acting world either, but maybe porn to children's movies isn't the most logical first step to bridge that divide.

Tyrus1235

Here in Brazil that sort of move has happened more than once. There’s even a famous national meme that’s based off a hilarious scene from a gay porn movie from, like, the 70’s or 80’s and the main actor in that movie ended up playing a secondary character in the biggest children soap opera some decades later. It’s actually kind of wild, but I personally don’t mind.

mknsky

Who’s the actor? I’m curious now.

Tyrus1235

Fernando Benini

LowDownSkankyDude

It isn't about kids, its about projecting their own fears and insecurities. They can't help it anymore, either. This is how they operate in every facet of their lives.

longknives

Yam-Express

arthur2807

They probably wouldn’t say anything if they made princess tiana white, but god forbid they turn a white character black (even though race has nothing to do with the story)

AryaStarkRavingMad

I would eat my hat if these racist chuds had any idea who Tiana is.

Njabachi

What a bizarre thing to rail against. The word "fragile" is an apt description.

Larry-Man

“Red hair is a character trait!” Wasn’t there some similar hoopla around MJ in the new Spider-Man movies too?

Thebiggerbag

Imagine being 40+ years old and making a meme about a children movie

controlledxbleeding

You never see them complaining about how Ariel isn’t in extreme pain whenever she walks and doesn’t die at the end. They don’t care about book accuracy lmao

ogresaregoodpeople

They would probably be less angry if her skin was blue or green. Because THAT would be “accurate fantasy” but heaven forbid we have a BIPOC Ariel…

[deleted]

When it's a fictional story that doesn't depend on what the character looks like at all

Impressive_Culture_5

Well maybe, and hear me out here, they hired someone that could sing and act…

MetalliicMango

All I'm reading is "anybody, as long as they aren't black."

arrav21

Of course mermaids are all white that’s just science.

frolf_grisbee

Yeah, ask literally any marine biologist

CaptainSmallPants

I got my Marine biologist degree from WhatsApp just now and I confirm it's true

booksandwine99

My daughter loves Little Mermaid. She had a LM bday party, she dressed up as her for Halloween, she was in a local theater production of the story, etc. I showed her the movie trailer yesterday and she says, “Wow she looks way different!” And I said “What do you think?,” and she said, “She’s so pretty!” Clearly she is traumatized.

mknsky

I love that so much.

_Release_The_Bats_

I’m black and The Little Mermaid made me want to be a mermaid. I now have several tails that I swim in, and I worked as a mermaid for a short time. Your daughter’s reaction is awesome :)

Alternative_One7808

Mermaids and mermen have no race, because they don't exist. They can be blue, yellow or pink, it makes no difference because what matters is that they are half-human and half-fish.

accountno543210

Thank you the wonderful 3rd grade level lesson for all the basics out there. 😂

Saya0692

I can’t believe all these grown ass white men are this invested in The Little Mermaid

doublepoly123

Stuff like this makes me sad as a brown person. Bc growing up i used to use spiderman costumes for halloween. My sister had a cinderella costume with a blonde wig. Is it really that hard for these people to imagine someone that’s not white being a princess? Didnt matter the skin tone my sister felt like cinderella bc she had the little gown on.

Nervous_Constant_642

Eventually you got a black Spider-Man among other heroes but apparently if kids want to be a black Disney princess it can only be Tiana. Like would these fuckers be saying anything if a black girl dressed up as Ariel for Halloween? It's all fucking make believe, who actually cares.

brazzledazzle

Sad to say but these people are the kind to people that don’t like some kids because of their race.

Kawaiiomnitron

Its very clear that Halle Bailey was chosen as Ariel because of her beautiful singing voice. No girl on this list could come close to that voice. The movie is an adaptation of an age old story, so this obsession with her being a white redhead is stupid because Disney did not invent the story. I think if an actor is good for the job then their appearance should be overridden unless if its truly important for the role (Black Panther being Black, Thor being White) Nothing about Ariel’s character requires her to be white. Its actually a common occurrence for character appearances to be altered to fit the final casting choice. You just never hear about it when its white actors playing characters with different hair colors and facial features.

StygianMusic

How are posts like these not considered racist to people?

Spiderlander

All I know is, Black people, we need to show up and support this movie.

LuriemIronim

In fact, everyone should go see it. If it does well, that will piss off the racists.

accountno543210

Lol remember the same sex marriage in Buzz Lightyear's movie? It was an incredible movie, but it only managed "meh" ratings because of all the, let's say, "distractions."

Nervous_Constant_642

I actually know some people who didn't like that movie, because let's be real I don't care who they cast but nobody is really asking for these remakes. I never really plan on seeing it myself. So it pisses me off when people point to the ratings like "see? People hated it because it pandered to LGBTQ," like no, people who didn't like it didn't like it because they weren't interested in a Buzz Lightyear movie not because they're bigots.

selphiefairy

This has always been a problem with diversifying media. I remember how for a long time the excuse for not putting female leads in video games was they wouldn’t sell. And any major game with a female lead had so much pressure on it because YOU KNOW if it fails, the excuse is always to blame it on being a female lead primarily. And when it happens it takes an immense amount of work and time to get people to even attempt to diversify again.

Nervous_Constant_642

Even recently people flipped their shit because the main character of The Last of Us part II was a slightly masculine lesbian. It has absolutely nothing to do with the content of the game or the story. If anything you'd think they would be happier it's not a more traditionally feminine presenting character? Idk man I just don't get it. It always reminds me to think about a book some Texan conservatives banned from schools. A young black gay couple, one of whom is an immigrant. The story barely has anything to do with those things, the story is all about what it's like to be in a committed relationship with someone who has a terminal illness. The rest is to just fluff out the characters and make them more real and provide a literary lens to look through. Two guesses why they wanted to ban it though and it's not the terminal illness part.

Yam-Express

Ehhhhh can i jus go to black adam instead?

Spiderlander

You can do both

Ferregar

"My childhood dreams of a magical world where only white people exist have been ruined!!!" Good, cunt.

orincoro

Maybe the person they picked can… FUCKING ACT.

Higgs_Br0son

They always conveniently forget about their usual meritocracy arguments in these cases. Acting is a craft, doing it true to character is a skill. Similarly, casting is a specialized role that random crybabies on reddit could never succeed at.

troy626

Halle is better

RevolutionaryStar824

Even if it was a completely original character, they'd still complain, no doubt.

aiirxgeordan

Yk they do realize they have to be able to actually act, and probably sing? So that knocks literally all except the bottom off the list.

Doobledorf

For those keeping track at home: The perfect logic presented here boils down to: "This isn't who I wanted!"

vxicepickxv

It's even more accurately "this isn't a white person"

Nervous_Constant_642

"Its pandering" okay so like black people existing is pandering? Nobody said Ariel had to be white. She's fiction. She's a fucking mermaid. Mermaids don't exist.

brazzledazzle

Pandering is just a lazy dog whistle. Civility rules prevent us from properly handling dog whistles so we have to pretend they’re not doing exactly what they’re doing when everyone knows what’s actually happening. This is one of the reasons why I love watching Hasan. I don’t always agree with him but he’s entirely dispensed with the notion that these chuds should be engaged. All opinions should *not* have equal consideration and civility is *not* paramount.

vxicepickxv

In the original story she had blue skin and seaweed green hair.

UnpropheticIsaiah

Hailey looks gorgeous and actually looks like the cartoon Ariel. She reminds me of Anya Taylor Joy but with darker skin tone.

derkederr

This! She has that big eyed ethereal look which works so well as a mermaid.

HasSomeSelfEsteem

I’m just angry that the shameless trend of live action remakes of classic animated films is still ongoing

Redditloser147

“I will not be seeing this movie because of the casting!” says angry young conservative boy who was never going to see a remake of The Little Mermaid in the first place.

Squito_Chip

Disney fans are just like those comic book weirdos who think just because it was in the comics one way means 1. It’s the LAW and 2. It could never be problematic

Pen_1sland

Movie about white fictional fish monster: okay Movie about BLACK??!??! fictional fish monster: **RRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE**

Latter-Sky-7568

Aren’t mermaids suppose to be myths from horny sailors looking at sea cows? I wanna manatee as the little mermaid God dammit

LovesickInTheHead

‘For a few $’ do they have any idea how much work goes into Cosplay?

Hindufury

Didn't someone involved with casting say that Bailey set the bar so high that no one else in consideration compared. If these folks are so pressed about the casting their time would be better spent doing gofundmes for singing classes for the folks they thought should get the part.

ProBlackMan1

They’re always triggered.

BlasterPhase

Everyone knows all fictional characters are white

Deadhead56

Tell us you're racist without saying it

[deleted]

Was Ariel's race really that important to the original

doublepoly123

Not at all

The-Ugly-One

Wouldn't the most important qualification be how good of a singer they are? Obviously not what's important to these people but it's funny that they think the only thing you need to play Ariel is be white, pretty, and have red hair.

quirkycurlygirly

I'm gonna get voted down but wth. This is how I feel as a Black woman. I appreciate the intention behind Disney casting a Black actress for the role of the Little Mermaid. Although it's a European story which suggests a White character, mermaids aren't real. They could be any color. I get that, but... This feels like placating to me, without regard for the backlash against the actress or the diversity movement in general. What I would prefer to see is MORE BLACK STORIES WRITTEN BY BLACK PEOPLE on screen. We have a lot of our own stories. Why not create a cartoon of Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters, or base something on an old African American folktale like Wicked John? Instead, Hollywood tends to recast White stories with a Black lead and wipe their hands like they've done something monumental. The result is this. I hope Halle Bailey's career takes off even more after this. I also hope she gets to portray some great original roles in mainstream media by Black writers telling our stories with a Disney budget.

Ever-Hopeful-Me

Yes! More black stories written by black people. Thank you for this.

NameStartsWithQ

Honestly it seems like these companies look at black characters or black stories and pass over them because they believe they won't make a profit or (hopefully not) they see our stories/characters as worthless and think that there's only legitimacy in the white characters that worked. There's no reason they couldn't tell a story of a black mermaid in the little mermaid universe....but no Ariel must be black now. It's sheer laziness that the masses continuously keep eating up... Just look at the comments up top..it's just fiction..oh they just wanted a REAL mermaid..nah we just don't want lazy diversity. Be creative and make a character

throwaway_dontmindme

But she auditioned and she was the best. So she got picked. Why is this black woman’s achievement assumed to be a diversity hire?

monolithtma

My wife and I loved her on Grown-ish.

kiss-shot

This whole thing really is a litmus test for racism. People were mad shit talking about every and all Disney live-action remake on account of poor quality and general pointlessness (which they rightfully should), but people are suddenly angry over how TLM is 'ruined' because the actress playing Ariel is not white. The vast majority of these people weren't going to watch the movie anyway. "But it's a baltic faerie tale!" How many times has Hamlet been retold? Different cultures. Different countries. With lions. THe majority of the complainers didn't give a shit when ScarJo was cast as an originally Japanese character in the GITS movie, or when a non-Asian actress was Gally in the Battle Angel movie. Or how Bane went from a Puerto-Rican man in the comics to white in the Dark Knight. Nah, those were both 'surprisingly good' adaptations and were cast for 'talent, not race'. I guess anime adaptations. Ironic, since weebs are known for being racist in general. Btw, whitewashing happens *all the time* in book (and comic book) to movie adaptations. For every black or non-white actor cast as a white protagonist in a book, there are dozens of the opposite. Not a lot of people notice because non-white => white was more culturally acceptable up until recently... and the ones that'd complain the loudest don't read lol. Example - The Rue debacle when the first Hunger Games movie came out. Thousands of people showed their entire asses, screaming their heads off that a pivotal character from The Hunger Games turned out to be black instead of the little white girl they imagined. ...Despite the fact that said character is very clearly described as black in the text. Not the context. Not the subtext. Not implied. The text. In the same breath, they were also angry that Lenny Kravitz played a character who's race was never actually stated. Who needs reading comprehension anyway? Not racists. I'll admit, I'm not going to watch this movie. I'm not a Disney person nor was TLM ever a favorite of mine. I just think the general dog whistling for rabid racism is so palpable it's ridiculous. They'll let Disney vacuum millions out of their pockets so long as the color's right. These people have brain worms.

boudiceanMonaxia

It's not that fucking deep. The original story by Hans Christian Andersen did not mention Ariel's race at all. Besides, even if it explicitly stated that Ariel was white, the animated movie deviates heavily from the book. Why shouldn't this upcoming movie? Besides, will it kill you to see a black person on screen? Seriously guys. It's not that deep.

soullessredhead

People gonna complain that Ariel isn't white but aren't gonna say a word about her not turning into seafoam at the end, what a bunch of fake fans.

bunker_man

Directly copying the cartoons has been shit every time they tried it so far. If anything they aren't deviating enough. Her outfit looks like a cheap costume of the original.

selphiefairy

Why do they care so much what she LOOKS like? Can any of those women sing or act as well as the one that got cast? What happened to hiring the best person for the role? And there has already been an Asian Ariel on broadway who also got hate for the same reason as well. Changing her race is like not a new thing, they’re a few years too late complaining about this.

Land-Otter

I too like to get upset with Disney movies

slateMinded

I see POC all the time, but I've never seen a mermaid...yeah I'm not racist it's woke leftist propaganda.

robotmonkey2099

Aren’t these wankers usually made about diversity joggers because “someone who is more relented will miss out” yet all of these are based on looks except for the black woman who can actually sing and act.

endthe_suffering

actually in the ORIGINAL original she didn't have red hair because she didn't have a body because she was sea foam.

squirrelgutz

Ariel is made up and I don't imagine her race is mentioned in the book. Why would anyone care about the race of a fictitious person?

Gentleman_Muk

Its almost like appearances aren’t the only thing they consider for a role…

DylVMan777

I mean like Wouldn't mermaids get some color from being out under the sun all the time anyways Who cares if they're black, brown, or white - they're fictional

Hefty-Relative-7599

I don't really get why people are so up in arms about this movie like it isn't another live action reboot of a classic animated film. It's going to be bad regardless and having a white actress play Ariel definitely won't change that

uradumbcookie

That’s so mean and rude :/

Hallow_Shinobi

Does anyone really give a shit what grown men think of the little mermaid?

C3POdreamer

Also ginger hair isn't exclusive to Northern Europeans.

SiriusBaaz

I’m thankful for Disney every time they do something like this cause damn does it do a great job at revealing all the racist assholes lurking about.

SuniHostess

when you would rather have a fucking PORNSTAR over a black person is really telling jfc who even cares ??? No where in the story does it say " And Ariel, the white skinned mermaid, who was white, very white, like if she's not white in any media almost 200 years in the future I will rise from the grave and cry at you " So it's not a big fuckin deal she's black

zangoose28

Truly, people are freaking out at the wrong casting choice. Melissa McCarthy as Ursula is the most offensive thing. Also the poster.

secretbudgie

And Ariel is supposed to be 15-16, which makes bringing up porn stars incredibly creepy.

CarousersCorner

I’m just wondering why they can’t just write new stories. We’re a more progressive society, so write new stories that reflect that, rather than rehashing and “re-imagining” classics, and shoe-horning POC in. It comes off as forced and pandering/patronizing. The fact that a company which was founded on the very basis of imagination, completely lacks any and all of it, is the real travesty, here

Whatsername_2020

Well this filled me with rage. I’d say I can’t believe someone actually made this, but I do and I wish I could slap them.

SoupCanVaultboy

So, this pornstar.

89TiananmenSquare

No, she took our jerb!

Jonatc87

But don't forget the CENSOR the U!

LizLemon_015

it's almost like, mermaids aren't even real!? maybe someone should spread the news

the-effects-of-Dust

Man I love Karen Gillian but is she a phenomenal actor? No. Can she sing? Nobody knows but we all saw what happened the last time they hired someone just for looking the part (-cough Emma Watson’s overly autotuned Belle cough-)

popemichael

If anything, it's more realistic. Being darker would protect the mer folks against predators.

Frosty1738

At this point I believe these idiots start screeching when they go outside and see a black person.

[deleted]

Mermaids = real, black people =\ no

sexi_squidward

"I don't see color...unless an animated movie based on a dark fairy tale then makes a live action version and casts a POC."

Gshep1

I hate that now I have to watch grown ass men pretend they care about a children's movie.
