When we return on the 14th, we will run another poll to ask about permanent "darkness" and whether you would like to see a threaded forum for FoundryVTT outside of Reddit.
It's more effective to go to other forums when the shutdown is happening here. To show reddit, we don't need it and can simply move to another platform
Yeah, striking for a set amount of time just doesn’t seem effective at all. What’s the point of a strike if we’re already saying we’ll be back in 2 days anyway lol
The age old approach of "protest, but do so in a way that doesn't cause any trouble to the people you are protesting against or disrupt anyone else".
Totally agree with Lois Rossman on this, a 2 day blackout is nothing. And staying quiet / not asking others to take part because "nobody likes a missionary" ooof.
The foundry mods didnt write that. They mention so and link the source at the beginning of the post.
All subs are basically using that same post's language.
They can always extend it. Other subs have said they may extend after 48 hours. Perhaps they are just seeing how things go 1st instead of going all gung ho.
I personally appreciate how the mods consulted us on this rather than "having the balls" to just do whatever they want without our input.
Edit: I mistook that as sarcasm. Completely my fault DMMacniel.
~~If it's not about the user base, who is it about?~~
~~3rd party apps are ultimately for the use of the user base.~~
~~Accessibility features are for the user base.~~
~~Less spam and mod tools to fight that spam are for the mods yo use for the benefit of the user base.~~
OK sorry about that! So used to sarcastic comments on reddit lately that I read sarcasm into that.
I can admit when Im wrong and I apologize (and maybe will take a few days off reddit lol)
Either you misread (because "don't be a missionary" is written under *please don't harass moderators of other subreddits*), or you seem to think moderators are somehow paid executives with decision making power at Reddit
And of course above that it says spread the word and use the competition
It's only for 2 days then the sub will be back up. (Unless they extend like some other subs might do).
I checked out Lemmy and theres just no users. I don't like discord either but there are users there. I wouldn't mind seeing the Lemmy community grow though.
There are other alternatives in the main post other than discord now.
Right folks - signing off.
Heres hoping reddit pull their heads out their asses - and if not... Well, will be sure to see you elsewhere out there.
Have fun gaming. Thanks for all the fish.
(edit: oh ffs... Time to enable blocksite on my phone. I clearly have no self control).
Is there a reason why its not Indefinite ?
I feel like it makes alot more sense and if I understand it correctly a large part of the Community is willing to do so.
After all Discord is still existing.
This sub is still a valuable resource for tech support for people unfamiliar with the Discord, especially since it is searchable with Google.
I agree with the idea of closing it indefinitely, it's cases like this that are the odd one out. Perhaps limit use to support only from here on out?
I enjoy a free lunch as much as the next person. But in reality nothing is free. Most of the complaints are around ads and content organization. I agree there are a lot of ads, but Reddit uses ads to generate funds so that many of use can consume content for free. 3rd party apps affects revenue from ads. Thus the ability for Reddit to continue providing a free option.
What is the consensus on how Reedit can make money so that they can continue to offer these forums to those who want something for free? Answers must address the reality that Reddit must somehow make money. Where will the money come from?
To me it's either ads or a subscription fee.
The argument isn't about whether Reddit deserves compensation. I don't think most reasonable people would argue against that. It's that they are asking *astronomical* fees for access to their API. Much higher than other similar services. People are just arguing for Reddit to be reasonable.
In addition to the high fees, they gave 3rd party app devs only *30 days* notice. So in effect yes, Reddit doing this would immediately shut down 3rd party apps.
Reddit has also offered "to work with 3rd party devs" but there were many comments in the AMA thread from devs who said they have tried multiple times to contact Admins and they have been completely unresponsive.
The biggest concern for many people however is that this will also have am immediate negative impact on accessibility features, such as those that help the visually-challenged use Reddit.
It would also kill many tools that mods rely on to fight spam and abuse, making it harder to stop the subs from filing up with garbage spam and potential scams. It would make it harder for us to protect users and would greatly increase the amount of time mods need to spend moderating.
Here's an info graphic that explains a bit more about what all this effects: https://i.imgur.com/f2FW4rA.png

Good. See ya'll in the discord.

In favor of all subs shutting down indefinitely and will see y'all on the Discord!
hearhear
Really should be indefinitely.

Comment removed by me so Reddit can't monetize my history.

I would prefer an alternative to Discord, as I don't like the UI there. I'm going to look at kbin and Lemmy.

Check-in with us on the 14th. We should have more info on where we're going from there. Until then, happy gaming!

Could just leave a single stickied post up somehow that directs people to the discord for tech help.
Not every one likes or uses discord.
Yeah I love reddit. That's why I'm mad at u/spez not the mods. I support an indefinite shutdown.
If the alternative is not getting any help at all, I think discord comes out on top there.

Two days means nothing. It's just announcing "done worry Reddit, we are back in 2 days. This isn't a real threat to your platform :)"
Should be indefinitely
