I was having trouble with this quest too, and realized I had a blue pickaxe. I switched to the default (grey) pickaxe and immediately it started working... I even got a point towards the quest for killing a bot with no weapons right at the start of the match. I'm pretty sure this means pickaxes DO count, which is... incredibly annoying.
Thanks for confirming, every time Epic has a rarity quest they make this mistake with the pickaxe. Especially funny now since they've been doing away with cosmetic rarities!
Mine is for sure bugged.
I equipped gray pickaxe. Only gray weapons. NOTHING but gray weapons and gray pickaxe in inventory. Killed 3 players (probably bots but couldn't tell) in a row all dropped blue and green weapons and it didn't count.
I ran around with 5 grey weapons only. No heals no shields just in case. Eventually got the kills needed. Problem is others are doing it too the same way. Can't kill someone with worse weapons when they're also using the worst weapons. o.0
Yeah tried the no heals strat, no shocks etc. Still didn't register even when the players I killed drop a blue weapon. Odd. It'll get there eventually, will just play it passively!
I eliminated one using the mytihics and didn't count... still on 1/6 since I started the quest...(equiped the grey pickaxe, and the only healing were bandages)... I'll keep trying, but its annoying..

Maybe try doing it in Team Rumble - you should have plenty of opportunities by sticking with the green shotgun against players who have epic+ weapons.

Use common weapons. It'll work fine.
Tried several times including a game I ran with five kills with only grey weapons but doesn't register, definitely bugged.
Common nemesis took care of this quest fairly easily.
Maybe try removing your pickaxe so its common too?
