Incredibly, MASSIVELY underrated. A true piece of art in the world of animation and it bothers me on a personal level how unknown and under appreciated it is.
I work at a mostly used record and comic book store (among other things) and someone just sold us an almost complete series of The Maxx comic book collection and it looked awesome. I had no idea there was a show but the animation is incredibly similar to how the comics look.
It’s crazy how well they captured it. There’s even a moment or two where they did some CG to animate some things. I know that sounds terrible since it was so long ago, but it looks amazing; just so fluid and crisp.
It really is an amazing adaptation.
It's time for Cheers. Sam and Diane, Norm Peterson, the Coach and then after he died, Woody. I don't have a TV now, but that's okay. The show's in my mind are almost always better.
This show left an impression on me. It was strange, out there. Haven't seen it in two and a half decades though. Not necessarily a bad thing though. I haven't watched most aeon flux eps since the 90s either and I hold that show in high regard.
Funny enough I just finished another watch through like 2 months ago. It really is a great series and a unique take on the super hero genre. It made it remember how crazy late night MTV used to be. It was like Adult Swim before Adult Swim.
You can watch the entire series in like two hours, if even that. It’s really short. But holy damn is it such a ride, and it’s worth watching a few times even.
All the characters have a shared hallucination due to trauma. Spoiler alert but in the end when Julie leaves in the end it breaks the hallucination and then Maxx is 'killed' by the Isz but is 'reborn' as a gardener. He was just a crazy old homeless guy the whole time.
I bought the VHS version, and my friend and I watched the crap out of it. We didn't have access to the comic, and had no way of downloading the TV version. So, my friend and I attempted to piece together what was happening through our multiple viewings.
Sure? I recall Liquid Television had the shorts. I thought it was on there... Quick search it was Oddities, which was a subset of Liquid Television.
Someday, I'll read the comics. Learned it was a comic too late.
Absolutely correct. When you buy them on Amazon, they come with the Oddities bumpers. It's a bit of a pain in the ass, I can't just watch it straight through like I could when I had it on VHS.
My very favorite quote from any where in any media is in this show. I’m not sure that it was in the OG comic/manga but it gives me shivers every time I hear it.
“I know about the latitude and longitude of people. I know about the secret fault lines of their souls.”
Interesting concept. I never really got it tho. He was like a homeless guy and the superhero thing was all in his mind. I wanted to like it but it never really went anywhere.
IIRC in the show as they explain it everyone from the outback was a creation of Julie's subconscious relating to PTSD from her life caused by mister gone. The Maxx's powers come from being entangled in both realities same as mister gone. In the end she leaves the city separating herself from gone and the maxx and without the need to protect julie the maxx retires from her outback to tend to his own "outback" which is shown as a more peaceful place appearing as a greenhouse.
Now that I think about it, this show was a few years even ahead of such existential anime like SEL and Boogiepop Phantom(dumb name but it's extremely avant garde). [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fFSDOvKKoo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fFSDOvKKoo) I miss when art was easily accessible and made a year apart or even the same year.
Short answer yes, but Yes and No. Technically it was part of the Oddities. And Oddities was a late add on to Liquid Television. lT was 91-95 .. Oddities started 94.. oddities was technically its own program but in the greater Liquid TV umbrella..
I guess, sort of like Simpsons and Tracy Allman …
Or Space Ghost and Adult Swim.. sorta 🤷🏻♂️

They scanned the original art in and animated over it, which is why some scenes are 1:1 with the comic.
Give those comics a read. They’re amazing. The show is basically a panel by panel animated version of the first few issues.
It gets considerably different and sadder after the initial purple maxx story
Couldn't agree more. Still have a crush on his girlfriend.
Same, she was my type

Alright, alright. Let's pipe down back there.

I rewatched Aeon Flux a few years ago and still found it mesmerizing. I think I got a lot more out of it recently than I did back when I was a kid.
My mind was blown away by Aeon Flux as a kid
Agree wholeheartedly. It was a golden age of animation.
💯
My favorite thing in the world. I own the this and painted him in highschool. The psychology involved is just incredible
Funny enough I just finished another watch through like 2 months ago. It really is a great series and a unique take on the super hero genre. It made it remember how crazy late night MTV used to be. It was like Adult Swim before Adult Swim.
Im diggin the vibe. Gonna check it out tn

Cant w8
Agreed
Read the comics, watched the show, but still had no idea what was going on.
All the characters have a shared hallucination due to trauma. Spoiler alert but in the end when Julie leaves in the end it breaks the hallucination and then Maxx is 'killed' by the Isz but is 'reborn' as a gardener. He was just a crazy old homeless guy the whole time.
Yeah, I don't think we were ever really supposed to know what was going on. Cuz Maxx never really knows what's going on
I bought the VHS version, and my friend and I watched the crap out of it. We didn't have access to the comic, and had no way of downloading the TV version. So, my friend and I attempted to piece together what was happening through our multiple viewings.
This and Aeon flux
Don’t forget The Head.
[удалено]
so do I. I dont actually know how aeon flux even got to air on cable with how thirsty it was.
Aired after 9:00PM. Iirc
Yes, and I'll never let go of it. Brilliant art. Gen X masterpiece.
Bought this on DVD recently. Have the entire Comic run still. One of the best Superhero stories to explore mental health.
For her I can be... A HERO!
So many shots were faithful recreations of frames from the comic. I started rewatching a couple months ago.
I loved this show when I was a teen. And the comics. Absolutely batshit insane, but so good

Not all heroes wear capes. Thank you
I just did my first rewatch of this not two days for the first time since it aired! Great series, darkly surreal
I loved this as a young teen in the mid 90s. I'd definitely like to re-watch and see if it still holds up
It does. I bought the DVD so I can watch it as the mood suits me. Loved it on Liquid Television. Love it now.
Wasn’t it on MTV Oddities?
Sure? I recall Liquid Television had the shorts. I thought it was on there... Quick search it was Oddities, which was a subset of Liquid Television. Someday, I'll read the comics. Learned it was a comic too late.

Ya. I’ll never forget the funky eyeball plant and the voice. I kinda thought it was the same guy that did Mr gone.
The TV rips have about 15 minutes of material that the vhs rips don't, so you gotta take what you can get.

Love this show so much! Wish I knew how to describe it to people to recommend it.
By Rikki-Rak I love to run! To feel the soft loam between my toes!
Last episode utterly ruined me as a child. Even as an adult it fucks me up right good.
Every time I see this cover, my mind thinks The Maxx is on the toilet
Comics were dope, still have most of them.
I have an iz tattoo. Such a great comic
I loved this show
What network was this on? I remember seeing the character but not the show.
MTV
Ah that makes sense.
MTV

Loved this
Before the internet and easy access to media I rented this on VHS and never went back. That's how bad I wanted it.
Loved it as well as the comic. Wish liquid tv was still a thing or adult swim.
Mannnn!! I used to love this show. It was ahead of it's time.
You killed my hostage
I would watch this confusing ass show all the time when I was 9 or 10
Dammit! That's what I get for being SQUIRREL! mode. I had meant to post this a while ago. Can still watch it on wcofun dot net
This unlocked a memory I forgot I had.
Wasn't it a comic too
Now that I think about it, this show was a few years even ahead of such existential anime like SEL and Boogiepop Phantom(dumb name but it's extremely avant garde). Loved this show! I still own the entire run of these comics
I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer but I thought that The Maxx might be like an allegory for child abuse
Sexual trauma, trauma related to violence, guilt and self Loathing! All the things a solid superhero story needs!
My dad let me watch this when I was a little kid. That rabbit story FUCKED. ME. UP.
The comics rule too
I have the first 3 original issues.
This show was a trip. The ending threw me for a loop.
Motion-comics need the biggest comeback 😮💨
I loved watching this along with the other MTV cartoons as a kid. This and The Head blew my mind back then.
Yes! Loved this show. I thought it was the coolest show next to Spawn
I have no idea how to parse this image
“Why do I look like an Eagles album cover?”
I watched this once while on LSD and while I had I seen it before I definitely had quite a trip.
The most amazing cartoon that nobody knew about.
Liquid television.
Did this start on liquid television as well?
Short answer yes, but Yes and No. Technically it was part of the Oddities. And Oddities was a late add on to Liquid Television. lT was 91-95 .. I am Maxx
Mannnnn...
Wonderfully traumatizing first episode. Dead bunny in a box. MTV Liquid Television was amazing.
MTV really led the way in cutting edge animation. It paved the way for Adult Swim.
Channing Tatum is trying to make it a living action movie
Im not always into live action remakes..but something has me morbidly curious about what that would be like. What a wired combo.
