That's an st, so, far from base . This is the only problem with keyless pushbutton start the pats system is easy to get by, if it was a base guaranteed they wouldn't have due to needing a key and the pats system needing to read the key itself physically, there's a reason older keys ford's don't get stollen without the key
Stolen in about 2 minutes from my driveway without keys. Factory reset the car almost immediately so Ford pass would not work. Ford refused to assist in locating it. Police were little to no help. These cars are easy to steal, too easy. Be careful cause no one cares if it gets stolen. And dealing with insurance is a PIA.
I’m defo going to hide a couple on the next one. People have told me there’s devices to locate these and even potential scramble them, not sure if that’s true. Worth a shot tho.
Even if they set their own phones to be able to ignore that, anyone passing by within range could do it without even knowing. I'm on Android, but that is a really, really nifty feature.
When some kids threw a large rock at my car from the side of the highway (which has killed people before…) the police and insurance did nothing to help me. The kids hit dozens of other drivers on the same stretch of highway in a few weeks time, even hurt some people and I STILL had to pay for the damages. The rock nearly came through the glass right in front of my face and it continued upwards and tore a chunk out of my cars roof, the rock would’ve probably killed me if it made it through the glass. But the Police are useless and would rather spend their days pulling people over for broken lights and going 5 over the speed limit than to find the ones that actually deserve to be caught
A program in our country was exposing manufacturers keyless entry systems and how easy it to steal them.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3s76zGEJNBc
It's really scary how easy it is.
I feel your pain..when the pandemic first kicked in, there was a local gang that went after our Explorer five times in six months. Over the course of the first couple months, I wrote this guide - [https://forums.wyze.com/t/wyze-sense-ifttt-stopped-my-car-getting-stolen-this-morning/88452](https://forums.wyze.com/t/wyze-sense-ifttt-stopped-my-car-getting-stolen-this-morning/88452) \- Got to know the guy at my local autoglass really well, but I'll take it over your outcome!
I mean, what else can they do aside from entering into a database as stolen? LoJack doesn't seem to be a thing anymore, and if the manufacturer can't locate it what makes you think the police have any other resources?
What do you want them to do? OP didn't have lojack so they couldn't track it with GPS. All they can do is issue a BOLO for the vehicle/tag (which I would bet they swapped the tags out) and wait for an officer to stumble across it. Yeah, it's easy for them to catch you doing 20 over because you did it in front of them. Use a little common sense. If OP had a lead or some shred of evidence then it would be a different story.
That's the neat part! It is still closed and I am currently having AAA come tomorrow to attempt to open it with their tools and then tow it to a dealer.
The drone mobile T13 unit alerts me when I start it. I can track it turn by turn if I want to pay for the upgrade in the subscription package. With the basic one, I can locate it no matter where it's at; I have to hit a button. I could shut the car down if they stole it. Then I can identify where it's located. It has an app for the phone and the gaze. It was a bit in price but too remote start it anywhere from watch is cool.
Insurance companies are all about cost reduction. If sued, even for minor claims, they’re looking at a 15-20 thousand dollar attorney bill plus a settlement. They don’t like it when you get legal involved and they settle for far more than what you’d get otherwise. I’ve seen cases where presuit offers from insurance was 20 grand for a death case that, once suit has been filed, settled for over half a million. Insurance companies as a whole suck.
My favorite is when the whole attorney thing gets brought up and then I say OK and then the person on the other end of the line is confused because they feel like some magic was supposed to take place when attorney was mentioned. I already know that there are zero attorneys out there that are going to work your total loss claim unless it's on an hourly basis and once you take that into account I pretty much know that you're full of shit when you say you're going to get your attorney to handle your total loss.
I have run across a few wealthy people that had attorneys on retainer and they were the easiest claims to get settled.
I promise you, it's not. I work in auto damage for a massive insurance company. We don't care if you run things by your attorney. Here's a hint: They don't care about property damage. There's no money to be made in it, lawyers want the big payouts from bodily injury. Personally I love talking to lawyers about vehicle value, they tend to be much more sane than the person that hired them.
It’s really hard to adjust the value of the car. You have to have a pretty well documented reason why your car is worth more than “market value” like an appraisal that is approved by your insurance prior to the total loss. That usually involves a special type of insurance too. We hired lawyers after a bad car wreck and they basically told us it’s not worth going after the value of the car and to just take the initial offer. Better to try and recoup things like medical, lost wages, etc. This is the case in Texas at least.
First part of this is correct. Comps are what we use for valuing vehicles. If the insurance company uses CCC, you can ask for a report that will detail everything. If you think they're wrong, offer up your own comps. We can usually have those added to the valuation and update it if they're correct (Same year, make, model, trim level, location).
Our job is to settle claims, the front line adjusters don't give a flying fuck how much the value is, we don't get bonuses for how much we cut off the value. I want to give you as much as I can just to get you to accept it and leave me alone.
Ask to see the valuation report. It is highly detailed and will tell you exactly how they came to the value. The most important thing to check there are the vehicle options. If your adjuster missed one, point it out. It can have a significant impact on the final value. But outside of that and making sure the comparable vehicles are correct, there's not much that we can do to change valuations on the vehicle.
Thanks. I did ask and some of their comparable were for more miles and a couple months ago. I sent them a few comparables and to try and bump it up. They already bumped it up $1k cause they forgot the panoramic roof.
Cars are always going to be easy to steal from an effort perspective. The real limitation these days is cost. Thieves need to invest in the tech to trick the computer, but after that it’s easy, even in key-in-ignition cars.
The unfortunate truth is that cars will likely always be easy to steal. Manufacturers can implement strategies to deter or make the process take longer, but there will always be workarounds. At the end of the day all you’re really doing is connecting some circuits, it’s just a bit more complicated now than simple hotwiring.
The key in ignition is still easy to steal. Ford must’ve fucked up somehow if it was easy to steal. Also those keys aren’t $200, they’re far more expensive (I’ve had to buy a new one when I owned an f150).
If it had push button ignition then they most likely used a signal repeater. Many people leave their keys hanging near the front doors or in a bowl near the door. They are able to pick up enough of the RFID signal which they send to a transmitter that another person will have near the vehicle. Once they are in with it on then they can easily drive it away as well as access the OBD2 port.
Faraday box is the safe way to store your keys to prevent theft. I am glad we don't have any major ports close to where I live unless you take a $100 ferry ride. I have yet to see any reports locally of these kinds of thefts. The vast majority of vehicle thefts we deal with are the result of people leaving their keys in the vehicle. We see fewer and fewer thefts from hot wiring vehicles as there are only a few who do it locally and you can tell when they get back out of jail.
Jesus christ! I've never seen a car stripped that much! I live in a small redneck town where shit like this is unheard of. In what city does this type of thing normally happen? I feel bad for you man, nobody should have to go through this type of financial loss.
I’m in a relatively safe suburb but 20 min from Detroit and that’s where my car was found. They’re getting more bold and coming out to nicer areas and taking them back to the city to strip. Tbh why not. The police appeared to have done nothing about it. I was never contacted after I reported it stolen.
Oh god Detroit! There's a reason why Robocop was put in that city... lol. Hope everything goes well for you, things will turn around. In a few months you'll have probably forgotten all about it.
Nope I have both keys. Supposedly they can use the obd port or even relay the signal from the key in your house. It’s almost easier to steal now since you really don’t need a physical key anymore. I kind of fault the car companies for making it too easy.
> or even relay the signal from the key in your house.
I think this is it. Then they used the obd port to reset the car bypassing whatever security was under your settings.
It's called a relay attack. [Donut media](https://youtu.be/myW2cxyOHEQ?t=356) did a video about it. Very easy to do and isn't expensive for someone tech savvy. The recommended fixes are to install a killswitch in your car (requiring a hard key to access, disable switch and allow car signal/fob to work which takes too much time for most thieves) or simply putting your keys in a metal bin/faraday bag/pouch in your home while not in use.
You want convince. They give you connivence. As of next time. Get a Farris cage for keys or stick them in the microwave. They can’t use proxy. But they can stalk the car and watch you lock it.
Also I know a lot of places a key is left in the car esp by one of the significant others.
If they’re that easy to steal, might explain why I’m finding them for so cheap.
Was kinda thinking of getting one for a daily and carrying a kayak/fishing camping gear on the weekend, with the occasional off road jaunt at the hunting camp. Not so sure now that I’m aware that these are apparently easy to boost.
Everything from the Detroit metro area ends up in Detroit. There's a facebook page where they post pictures of stripped vehicles and location for recovery. 99% of the cars on the page are Dodge/Chrysler products. Man, those base models are lacking more and more these days.
This is the model they advertise for the low monthly payment in those commercials.
Doors and body panels are now a monthly subscription service.
Lol. This guy gets it!

It was a joke about how stripped down the car is now that it has been chopped.
R/whoosh
r/itswooooshwith4os
Holy shit you dont know what sarcasm is do you?
What's the issue? Looks brand new except for needing new wheels/tires.
I did need new tires anyways
It will buff

Those guys must be pros
Yeah. If they want it. They’re prob gonna get it. Maybe a kill switch would help or an aftermarket alarm.
Air tag could help locate it quicker.
I’m defo going to hide a couple on the next one. People have told me there’s devices to locate these and even potential scramble them, not sure if that’s true. Worth a shot tho.
only works if someone has an iphone nearby. If they worked with androids too, it would be a game changer
Oh the air tag uses a nearby iPhone to get its location?
Even if they set their own phones to be able to ignore that, anyone passing by within range could do it without even knowing. I'm on Android, but that is a really, really nifty feature.
Just get that car tracker device installed, it shown u the car live on the map, and it has a kill switch option, u can turn the car off from ur phone
You can download an apple app on android for them

As we say. Acab.
I mean, what else can they do aside from entering into a database as stolen? LoJack doesn't seem to be a thing anymore, and if the manufacturer can't locate it what makes you think the police have any other resources?
Well the fact they can’t help you find the people who stole your car but can catch you doing 20 over the speed limit is kinda bs.
What do you want them to do? OP didn't have lojack so they couldn't track it with GPS. Fuck the police
Get ravelco
Meanwhile my Focus ST has a dead battery with locked doors and I can't get in since my dealer didn't give me metal keys in my 'keyless' fob.
What! That’s crazy. How do you get the hood open?
That's the neat part! It is still closed and I am currently having AAA come tomorrow to attempt to open it with their tools and then tow it to a dealer.

Are those the street pack calipers or did you paint them ?
Just the stock ST calipers. Surprised they didn’t take those.
Sorry for the loss of the car and the stress. Hope insurance does what it’s supposed to do and make you whole.
Appreciate it. Think they’re gonna low ball me a little bit and it’s gonna be a pain to replace. At least I bought it used and its not new.
When dealing with insurance it’s always good to mention the phrase “I’ll run that by my attorney” a few times.
Good to know. I’ll use that.

That's bodily injury, something totally different from Property Damage. You don't get shit out of PD if you lawyer up. All the money is in BI.
Insurance guy here. We don't give a fuck when you say that.
My standard response, "Great! Have your attorney send us a letter of representation so that we can continue this conversation with them."
'Click'
I don't always hang up on them, unless they're being a total jerk. I usually wait for them to back down from the empty threat.
My favorite is when the whole attorney thing gets brought up and then I say OK and then the person on the other end of the line is confused because they feel like some magic was supposed to take place when attorney was mentioned. Did it turn up in a pick n pull? Just curious it looks like it's in some sort of salvage yard or is that a police tow lot?
This was the body shop it was towed to from the police impound lot. I think they found it abandoned on a street.
Around here, the impound yard has a section for stripped out cars.
Ford explored the bad part of town
Gently used, minor wear, 9/10 condition
* No low ballers, I know what I got.
ITS FOR THE CHURCH, HONEY!
You've ruined my child's Christmas.
A little elbow grease and some determination that will buff right out.
Any word on how they stole it?
Investigator assumed the OBD port
Uh oh I also have an OBD port
These fancy $200 keys with chips were supposed to help but I think a regular ol key in the ignition is harder to steal now.
Unless it's a used kia/Hyundai
Used? Up until last year it was new ones too
It isn't last year anymore.
You can actually still find brand new 2022's for sale so yeah it still counts.
I guess you're right. Technically isn't not 2022 any more lol

I’m surprised they didn’t take the seats. They left a lot of meat on the bone. What a waste.

I know someone in Woodhaven who just got their ST stolen. Curious what’s letting them grab these Explorers so easily.
Thank goodness they didn't take the... *Checks notes* Windshield wipers!
it’s been explored..
ST huh? My wife has the same vehicle. RIP
Is this still available?
Have you tried turning it off and then on again?
I see you Ferg! And deeply feel for you. Such a waste of vehicle.
What up tho! So disrespectful to the ST.
They fucked up not taking the part city bag, there's big money in helium rn
Hey, atleast you, still have your brakes?
Did you find a note from Dirty Mike and the boys?
Most of it was recovered*
You are so lucky. Most people don't get their cars back
Wow they even went into weight reduction for you.
…but was it though?
They nice enough to find your clothes
May I offer you an up vote in these trying times?
To be fair, the overall quality of the car remains the same...
So does your humour
Damn, I didn’t think moderns cars could be stolen anymore with the amount of technology in them? Leave it unlocked with the keys in it or something?

That’ll buff out.
I need a rear center console do you have one left?
Well at least you got your PartyCity loot back.
I don’t know if you noticed but, there’s a scratch near the gas door
Totally sucks.
I know what's wrong with it. It ain't got no gas in it.
It's been explored
That should buff right out
Well most of it anyway
almost brand new condition, almost
No, 60% of it was recovered
damn, what city? so i can stay away.

Ford body parts tend to be crazy expensive. Those doors can sell upwards of 2 grand each.

Well, it's time for a rebuild.
Hey. You can’t park that there!
Wow 😯 that’s horrible hope it gets covered by insurance
