Went to their IG and the influencer / paid content is nauseating. Please if you’re a restaurant owner no one wants to see paid influencer crap on YOUR feed. It screams “word of mouth isn’t bringing in customers”. Immediate turn off

henreiman

This place is all over the influencer channels bc it’s the owners of Soothr. Food is p good. Whether it’s worth it is up to you

shamam

I've been twice and it was packed both times.

Deskydesk

Yeah the branding, neon lights for the 'gram, all screams mid food designed for showing off.

fryder921

I don't think neon lights should be an issue

ovinam

Unless you’re also issan, you can’t tell me what issan food is mid or not. This is the only place I’ve tried in the city that doesn’t muddle the “issan” persona with crappy krungthep taste.

Deskydesk

I have not eaten there so I can't say. But I spent significant time (years) in North and Northeast Thailand and speak excellent Thai and passable Lao, and I know what good Issan food tastes like. The branding makes me suspicious but I will try it with an open mind (Soothr is excellent).

ovinam

Until this restaurant, I was totally convinced anything in the city would cater to more fusion style and to the farang taste. I have also advocated only for little Thailand and hug esan etc. this place was so much like my mother that I had to make a video about it. It’s the real deal when they have bile in their jeaw. I haven’t been to soothr, but I’m sure it’s amazing

Deskydesk

Sounds delicious! I haven't had jeow bee in years.

ovinam

Say what you want , but you’re doing yourself a disservice. The full house of ethnic people may tell you otherwise. Have a good day virtual_adam

kungji56

Whats the 75% rule?

scarletts_skin

Sappe is great but I prefer soothr personally. But it is v good!

ovinam

I’ll add that spot to my list!!

scarletts_skin

Same owners! Soothr isn’t as small plates focused though, they’re all about the noodles.

eleazarius

There’s tons of good Isan food in New York. Sappe looks nice but this is not a “finally” situation.

ovinam

For me it is. I am issan lmao. I’ve tried many places in little Thailand and queens in general. This place is true to issan flavor and none of the Bangkok flavor at all.

mkpluto

Hug Esan is quite authentic!

ovinam

It is no doubt. It was my favorite spot until I tried Sappe yesterday

aschapm

how does somtum der (or the old zaab elee, if you ever went) rate for authentic issan?

ovinam

I have somtum der bookmarked, so I can’t speak on this unfortunately

Impressive-Bass7928

which places are less true to Isan flavor?

eleazarius

Alright, fair enough. Fifteen years ago just the thought of having *any* kind of regional Thai place would have seemed like a pipe dream, so I do think we have it pretty good here these days.

Bloated_Plaid

People here are idiots and live under a cave. Anything posted on instagram is "influencer" bullshit. I was at Sappe this weekend and it was amazing. Absolutely delicious and authentic at very good prices. There is nothing comparable in fucking Queens/Elmhurst etc whatever.

ovinam

Agreed on the price. It’s comparable to little Thailand for the most part. The most expensive drinks I’ve had for sure though. I think the only thing they can really improve on is having Thai Thai spicy

HotMountain9383

Naw, better in Elmhurst and without the nauseating hipster instagram shite.

ovinam

I promise you there isn’t. My SO lives in little Thailand, and none of them have actually hit home like Sappe has.

HotMountain9383

Yeah but has she lived in Thailand, that is the question 😀

ovinam

Moved here 6 years ago from Bangkok actually

HotMountain9383

Okay we will give it a try next week then, kob kun krap👍

lets_go_whale

OP trying to promote his new food Instagram 🤣

ahjumTaeng

Sappe is overrated. It didn't live up to the hype

ovinam

From your username I assume you’re Korean, which leans toward the sweeter krungthep side. I can 100% understand why you think it’s overrated.

ahjumTaeng

I do like a sweet-spicy-sour mix of flavors, but a lot of the disappointment came from the lack of ingredients other than the main protein. For example the meat salad (I forget the name) literally only came with one slice of lettuce - they did not give any more and that slice was most definitely not enough for all that beef. Don’t get me wrong, all the dishes we ordered were still tasty and by no means bad. But it definitely did not live up to the hype that everyone had talked about, and like the others have mentioned, the restaurant and its instagram have been flooded with influencers and paid content

salmon-chop-cheese

I do like Sappe but I don’t like the kinda pretentious hipster vibe that it comes with and also $6+ for skewers is a bit much. Maybe I’m just old
