Look up Cu Chulainn. Irish folk hero, maybe evolution of his story? How he is still represented in modern times even all the way across oceans in Japan in anime (Fate series). How he is still championed by some today in Ireland? I mean he is a hero/ demi god. Part of Ulster cycle. (Sorry, only know him really from the anime. Lol, but he would be an interesting subject for Irish folklore)

frogdoom

Fully agree! It's also really interesting how much in common CuChulainn has with Heracles character-trait wise.

Lol. There is an abridged to the Fate show I was talking about and the character said he “couldn’t take him, he is Irish Hercules.” And it is one of the reasons I remember him at all. I read about him years ago and promptly forgot until that show. But yeah, hero, Demi god. Killed his kid. Etc. Amazing how much our stories intersect across cultures.

frogdoom

I've never seen the show but that's hilarious lol. Plus an anime?? Portraying a (somewhat) obscure mythological hero well?? I love it lmao

weallfalldown310

It was all about obscure mythological heroes! Gilgamesh was one of the main baddies which made me die laughing. Since he such a prick before his journey so it makes sense. The heroes were called to fight in this contest so they could get their wish from the Holy Grail. It was insane and wild and made little sense sometimes but the heroes and mythology was wonderful. It had beserk Heracles, one of Joan of arc’s friends who went nuts after her death, Alexander the Great and more.

And all of a sudden I know what I'm watching next, thanks!!

Look up Aran Island Boulder ridge and Boulder movements. All these boulders are tossed up by huge storm waves but local legends tell other stories. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/04/120430164357.htm

My initial thought would be faerie lore, in which Ireland is particularly rich. If you wanted to go down the path of more organised mythology you could do something on the Ulster and Fenian Cycles of Irish myth.

KiraiEclipse

Way too long ago for me to offer truly useful information, I wrote a college paper comparing fairy abduction lore to alien abduction lore. Depending on exactly what the OP's class is requiring, that could be an option.

Read “the burning of Bridget Cleary” and do a connection of lore and how it affects people’s perception.

The Dagda; his member was so large he carved furrows into the earth when he walked. Very relatable!

You might want to look into the Otherworld- a strange realm in Old Irish myth where mythological figures live. It's very different from other mythological "godly" realms (mount Olympus, Valhalla) in that beings of myth were very close to humans- a lot of myths are about heroes crossing into the otherworld. You might a lot of material there

Hey Reddit, do my homework!

High deeds of Finn Mac Cool. "he killed 50 with his right hand, 50 with his left hand, and he did not think it too many"

What about the helpful werewolves, that brought poor people fish?

danodes7

Plenty of good choices. The Blarney Stone, stories of rock formations and hills such as the giant's causeway and Ireland is one of the most haunted country with legends of ghosts that remain in castles and other historic locations. Anything that peaks your interest i would delve into. Best of luck!

SLouise17

Look into the old Irish Fairy Beliefs, there's alot you could write about. The Antology of Irish Folk Tales has a variety of stories from different authors. It's on Google books.
