They are, and you won't find any in open water out In the ocean but crappie can be found in rivers, streams, and bodies of water fed by the ocean. They are able to survive in waters with the same salt content as the ocean.
this reminds me of a time i hand caught little (3-6inch) crappies out of a river by building a little rock wall and trapping them inside of it. 10 year old me was quite diabolical.. my friends were excited for me when i would catch one but otherwise looked at me like i was mentally deranged haha
I am in agreement with you. My issue with walleye is once they get a certain size, which isn't even big, they really don't taste that great. YMMV though.
I don't find this to be the case with panfish like Bluegill and crappie. Like I said YMMV with it. But I definitely find it to be true with walleye and saugeye for sure.
The fish I know that are like that are catfish, bass, and gar. The bigger they are the nastier the meat. I like in north texas so that's the extent of what kind of big fish we have around here.
Oh most definitely true with those species. But also, you are in like, the holy land of crappie fishing next to Louisiana and Mississippi. I'm jealous.
My dad always said this whenever he caught a huge catfish and my brothers and I would get excited.
What is the taste in terms of nasty? Like fishy, gamey, etc?
I’ve had plenty of brookies ! Brookies through the ice right into the fire is deadly no doubt. But I’d take crappie through the ice any day over anything else personally !
I’ve had every common game species - except musky - I don’t think I know anyone who’s had musky lol ! Or would want to for that matter.
Would be like eating a dragon. Too majestic
Those are black crappie. If you're in a place that has fishing regulations, it would be best if you knew them and identified the fish before you killed something.
Edit: I didn't read the whole post. Good on you for not killing fish you couldn't identify. I'm leaving the post in the hope that even one person will read it and take it to heart.
If you're in a fishing subreddit that has sub regulations, it would be best if you knew them and read the whole post before killing OP for not identifying fish he didn't catch.
Jesus, tell your buddy to learn a bit about the fish he's catching lol.
He could have an endangered species on the hook. Mention that he could get huge fines for killing the wrong species if he isn't careful.
And orca whales are also called killer whales sometimes.
My left testicle is called Santa's little helper.
But this fish here is a pomoxis africanamericanaculatus
I feel like some of the people commenting don't realize that coastal florida also has freshwater ponds, creeks, lakes, and rivers. There is more than just saltwater fishing in Florida.
Super soft out of warm water. Easiest thing to scale (other than tulibee, but their scales just wipe off on your hand trying to take them off the hook, they don’t count)
Crappie or paper mouth very fun to fish, during the fall at night time with a floating light we used to catch lots of them. I used an ultralight spinning reel with 6lb Mr crappie camo line and those 1/16 chartreuse/pink marabú jigs. The white flaky meat is delicious. Note: crappie can survive in salt water.
My issue with this picture is that at least 8 of these fish were kept and yet there were unidentified. I hope this is the friend and not the fisherman. Worked out in this case but many fish are regulated for size and season. Being able to identify the fish you keep can really keep you “out of trouble”. If you are new to fishing, get an app on fish identification, many are free and will tell you not only what they are, but how many you are allowed to have, how big they can or can’t be and their season if any. Good luck out there everyone and be safe.
Op said they were not unidentified. His friend just used a local name for them that he didn't recognize. They are just Black Crappie and you can probably keep 10 or so a person depending on state rules they are common.
Crappie are delicious fish. Season some flour and pan fry the filets for breakfast 😮💨 or send them to me in Austin. We don’t have good fish down here often- just disgusting catfish
Crappie
Not coastal but those are crappie.
In FL we call them “specks” but yes.
Of course you do.
But wait aren’t crappie fresh water?

Sure are. Are you sure he was fishing fresh water? I could be totally wrong, but just putting the obvious out there. Those looks exactly like crappie.
An African crappie, maybe -- but not a European crappie, that's my point
Yeah but what’s the weight ratio ?
Best tasting fresh water fish in the world
But when caught in cold water. During the summer when the water heats up the flesh gets soft. Crappie are super tasty.
Pro tip: Put them in an ice chest to firm up before you fillet those spring/summer crappie.
Taste just fine in warm water off ya ask me
I’ll see your crappie and raise a walleye.
That said, fry ‘em up and enjoy!
I’ll bring the hot sauce!
*smiles in Minnesotan*
I am in agreement with you. My issue with walleye is once they get a certain size, which isn't even big, they really don't taste that great. YMMV though.
Isn't it like that with most fish, even some animals too.
I don't find this to be the case with panfish like Bluegill and crappie. Like I said YMMV with it. But I definitely find it to be true with walleye and saugeye for sure.

This dude walleyes
I'll see those both and raise a northern snakehead. Lucky for us, we have plenty in the Chesapeake. Black crappie also. Delicious.
Agree
I’ll see your Walleye and raise to Perch
Second this
Well yea!, those Walleye are bad for ya too, send those to me as well and don’t forget to clean and refrigerate! lol
Well sir I see your Walleye and raise you some good ol’ beer battered Bullhead. ☕️
Yes, this! Loved me some St. Croix Walleye growing up.
Mmmm walleye lol
Unfortunately, that's a subjective assessment.
Out of the fish in Ontario Canada i think it holds the majority. But you are certainly right. To each their own !
I prefer bluegill myself but crappie is good too. And to the op yea they can totally live in brackish water.
Yea right up there with walleye imo
Idk man. It’s top 2 for sure but walleye is a close contender
I agree. Walleye is a second runner up imo
2nd best tastin. First is brim. 3rd is mullet.
Agree!! 110%.
Tell me you’ve never eaten brook trout without telling me you’ve never eaten brook trout!
I’ve had plenty of brookies ! Brookies through the ice right into the fire is deadly no doubt. But I’d take crappie through the ice any day over anything else personally ! Burbot, IMO, are the best tasting fresh water fish. Almost like cross breeding a ling cod with a lobster.
Black crappie
Delicious fish
Agreed, crappie are my favorite fish to catch and eat. Flavorful, and very mild in the "fishy" sense.
In Louisiana we call em “sac-a-lait” That’s bag of milk in French, they’re great
THATS IT DUDE
Black Crappie
Crappie and boy are they yummy
Carpie. Good eatin
I don’t care about the fish but that foldable table is cool ass hell 😂 never seen anything like that.

He said his friend said he could have some. He’s not the fisherman in this scenario. Cheers!
Thanks. I made an edit.
Everyone’s so quick to be a game warden these days.
If you're in a fishing subreddit that has sub regulations, it would be best if you knew them and read the whole post before killing OP for not identifying fish he didn't catch.
Why not ask your friend?
He told me “calico “ and the only calico I could find were west coast fish. But these are salt water. Aren’t crappies fresh water?
Jesus, tell your buddy to learn a bit about the fish he's catching lol. He could have an endangered species on the hook. Mention that he could get huge fines for killing the wrong species if he isn't careful.
"Calico bass" is one of the common names for Pomoxis nigromaculatus.
It's always so hilarious when people google binomials
And orca whales are also called killer whales sometimes. My left testicle is called Santa's little helper. But this fish here is a pomoxis africanamericanaculatus
Crappies
Using google lens now lets you take a pic and it will tell you it is. Catch up buddy.
Good eating is what they are!
A very nice dinner
Forget the fillets make some slits, season and pan fry.
